I can't see any black people so I guess I'm confused.

Don't you hate it when you run in to 5-6 people every damn day?

Posted By: SamOlson Re: Walmart? - 09/20/19
A rather peaceful moment.
Posted By: Valsdad Re: Walmart? - 09/20/19
If I hang around the house all day and don't go to town, and the FedEX/UPS guy doesn't show up, 5 or 6 folks a day would be alot. Sometimes when I'm out back, if I'm looking the other direction, all I know is a car went by to one of the three residences past our place.

Usually see more deer, cows, and birds than I do people and that suits me fine.

Again, I refer you all to my signature below.

Geno, I forgot the two clerks at the store right before I got home.
Posted By: Valsdad Re: Walmart? - 09/20/19
I keep threatening. If we ever win the lottery I'll have to come up that way for a visit to you Northern Border folks.

That country looks amazing. Being a Westerner by rearing since the age of 9, I love the wide open spaces.

When we lived back east, the friggen trees would hardly let a fella get a view of his surroundings.

Geno, greenest September on record.

Bad for the wheat harvest, great for grass!
Posted By: Valsdad Re: Walmart? - 09/20/19
Are you folks able to salvage any of that wheat that got laid down? I've always wondered.

Not rain, usually wind I seem to recall, used to screw with the fields in E WA. Seems they used to be able to get some of it.

Hope you're still going to do well overall. Fat calves from the green grass at least.

I had 6 people in the one meeting I had yesterday. Took an hour to get there through hi way work zones and frequent stops. Compared to the east coast rat race you are a lucky man Sam. And we should all thank you and the other ranchers and farmers that provide for this country. My dad used to ride and had a couple horses, and thought any day on horseback was a good day. You work harder than most here I am sure but damn what a view.

Geno, we had a prolonged rainy stretch and got about 4" over 4-5 days. Right when the wheat was ready to cut....

The main issue we have is that the quality of the grain deteriorated. Some of it sprouted and a bunch of it bleached out. It went from food to feed so to speak.

Best yield we've ever had(50-80 bushel) but lowest price that I can remember. With the current discount we lost around $1.20/bushel, roughly $70/acre, overall $50-60k hit.....ouch!

But luckily we are small wheat farmers and don't have a lot of overhead. Some of the big guys have thousands of acres left to cut and they might be hurting.

Blu, it took three of us 3 days to gather that pasture and I know we missed a few. 16k acres inside one fence, federal land of course, not my personal rancho!

Mike, it's about a 80 mile drive from home. Yesterday we put on about 15 miles on two track trails pulling the horse trailers. Damn near didn't make it through a couple soft spots.

That far out in the hills you truly appreciate a good pickup and horses!

Sam, I'm glad you, and the other folks are raising wheat, and I do not.
Posted By: SamOlson Re: Walmart? - 09/20/19
Richard, I haven't taken any pic of the fields lately, makes me sick even thinking about it.
Posted By: EthanEdwards Re: Walmart? - 09/20/19
That's a nice lookin' ol pony Sam.
Posted By: DakotaDeer Re: Walmart? - 09/20/19
Does the pony have his winter coat already, or does he just have wiry hair year 'round?
Posted By: wabigoon Re: Walmart? - 09/20/19
Well Sam, I say if it was easy to pay for land, everybody would own a few thousand acres. Some days you get the bear, some days the bear gets you.

Sam, how far are you from Mikes City ?
Posted By: Valsdad Re: Walmart? - 09/20/19
Sam, thanks for the info on your crop and losses. That sucks YUGE balls. Having that kind of yield, which is more than average for the better areas of the Palouse and then having it degrade bites big blue weinies. Or maybe it's weenies.

Hope the winter is easy on you folks now, good comes after not so good, right?

As a lifelong Easterner living in the mountains of NY I'm always in awe of the big blue skies out west. You have a great "office" Sam.
Posted By: SamOlson Re: Walmart? - 09/20/19
Ethan and Dakota, he is furred up pretty good ain't he? I noticed that myself.

Probably be a bad winter on the way!

Richard, it's farming, you know how it goes........

C, we are about 150 miles north of Miles City. One of my favorite drives in the entire state. Make it down there once a year or so.

Geno, two years ago we had about a 5-8 bushel average and it was so dry a bunch of wheat didn't sprout outta the ground until this time of the year.

Quite a transition regarding moisture.

River, it's Big Sky country!

He looks good. I like a furry hoss.

Closest Wammart here is 19 miles away.

Sam, do you know the Welker family by Shelby?
Posted By: SamOlson Re: Walmart? - 09/21/19
C, he not overly tall, maybe 14-15 hands(?) but he's has a fairly stout frame.

Geno, you're trippin' me out man!

Odin, I have heard of them and watched a couple youtube vids last winter. They farm a lot of acres and do some pretty neat restoration work to older equipment.

Like the people that built our place. We don't even have a sump pump in our basement.

Hey Sam,

it's just that reddish orange mane on the critter. Reminded me of the late 70's.

Had a dog once, Irish Setter mix, mostly black like a lab with red feathers on his ears and legs. Some kids saw him one day and said "cool, a Punk Rock dog". Your horse reminded me of Lefty (real name Leftovers, as he was the runt of the litter and not taken. The 'runt" ended up at about 85-90lbs on the hoof)

My guess on the OP was going to be left, right, or straight ahead are all about equidistant to Walmart.

Does green grass all summer help put extra ### on cattle? I recall hearing something about yellow-dryer grass like a normal summer/fall and higher protein or something.

Buddy about 2hrs NW of me got 6" of rain from mid-day Fri through Sun AM. I'm thinking that we're going to need a LOT of wind/heat or there's going to be wheat, beans, corn, sunflowers, and canola left in the fields until spring. There's still an awful lot of wheat that hasn't been cut.
Posted By: Jim_Conrad Re: Walmart? - 09/23/19
Yep. Washy green grass can sometimes mean lighter calves.
