It's not just in Yellowstone. There's a video on THIS PAGE that shows a bull elk attacking a woman in Estes Park, Colo. Apparently she got a bit too close. She's lying on her back kicking the elk as it tries to gore her.

It happens fairly often in Estes. Idiots think it's a petting zoo. Rut is a time to git 'er done, and no time to engage in mere petting... smile

People standing around watching and no one had a gun. Unreal.

They may have gotten in trouble shooting the stupid woman

Hahaha, or the elk.

I was in Custer park and watched as idiots approached bison way too close to photograph with their cell phones. One of the bulls was starting to have enough of it. I have to confess, I'm not sure I would have risked the legal trouble to help those idiots - armed or not.

Stupid should hurt.

I would not help as it would mean interfering with natural selection.
Darwin had a point- - - - -why interfere with the gene pool getting improved?

As foolish as bicyclist taking a lane of a busy highway because "it's their right". Perhaps, but laws of Physics take precedence over rules of the road.
Theres a park not too far from where I like to hike. People show up for a picnic and allow their little kids to try to pet the wild horses. I can't watch, only a matter of time till someone is really hurt.
If you were in Custer park and you shot a buffalo that was attacking a woman, good chance you would wind up in jail.

Not that I'd be inclined to test that - what, specifically, would be the charge? Now that I'm looking, I'm coming up with nothing.

First time I saw bison in Custer State Park was on a Boy Scout summer trip across the state for a week. A small herd decided it was time to run across the road, traffic notwithstanding. I remember thinking holy [bleep], am I glad I'm in a big bus. Must be something wrong with me.

Hunting out of season, civil offense for the value of the buf (conversion). All with a solid self defense/defense of others argument. This ain't Colorado.

Doesn't sound like a jailing offense, but still not worth risking for somone who's asking for it.

When that ol' bull started claiming his space, I said, "someone's gonna learn a hard lesson" and took a position to watch the show. I was disappointed.

Honestly, I can't fault anyone for standing there with a gun and not using it, in that situation.

Yeah, she was obviously a dim-o-crap.

Yep. Got to let Darwinism take it’s course.

No doubt RC !

Actually the defense would be necessity, don't know where my mind wandered off to. Anyway people are worth more than animals, any make or model, in this state.

That's what I figured. Idunno though. Is it really necessary to rescue Darwin award contestants?

Not surprising for Colorado.

However the outcome would have been best for all.

Dumb as the woman probably was, I can’t say for sure she initiated the encounter. Years ago in college I was volunteering at a local wildlife park when a bull elk in rut went out of his way to charge me, if it were for the tall chain link fence I woulda been in trouble.

Impressive as heck tho to see what a charge looks like close up when you’re in the crosshairs. That elk sure rattled that fence 😎

Musta been frustrated, I’m not recalling any cow elk in that pasture.

The incident I saw was humorous, not dangerous. Many years ago we were taking the wildlife trip through Custer SP. Park brochures and other sources of information told of the panhandling donkeys, and advised not to feed them. When we came to the spot where the donkeys were hanging out by the side of the road (much like human panhandlers) it was obvious they were the umpteenth generation of panhandling donkeys. They had hung out in the same area so long that they had worn away the grass, and just before the panhandling area the park people had put up a "Don't feed the donkeys" sign. A donkey approached the car in front of us, the rear window went down, and a potato chip was offered. They donkey didn't want the single chip-he stuck his head into the car most of the length of his neck. It was hilarious-kids screaming, arms flailing, potato chips flying everywhere. I'll bet those kids still remember they day the donkey went for the potato chips; nowadays they would probably have to go to therapy for being traumatized by an attacking donkey.

I remember those donkeys. We were there when I was a kid in the 50's. Yeah, they've been there for a few generations. They'd stuff their whole head through a window to get whatever you had whether you offered it or not.

When you posted the video of the elk hunting with a flyrod thread I was thinking that guy got lucky he didn't get charged by the bull. Personally that would have been too close for comfort for me.

Somebody should have used a gun to defend the elk.
