Several months ago, I posted about my neighbors hemp crop that was right across the fence from me. He's about ready to harvest it, and you can smell that stuff almost half a mile away. I don't know anything about it, but another neighbor who is growing some says it's testing dangerously high for the THC content. I guess that means you could get a buzz from it. These are pics of then and now.

James, how tall is that hemp ? There is a field in Cynthiana, in town and it's very short. Buddy says the hemp plant they grow now isn't that tall because they grow it for the oil and not the foliage and buds.
Posted By: JamesJr Re: Update on Hemp - 09/29/19
There are different varieties, from what I was told. This appears to be maybe 4 1/2-5 feet, while others I've seen were a little shorter.

I hear it makes good rope for hanging by the neck and dragging dopeheads behind your pickup, could probably help trans' and homeos get to the other side of relief too. smile

You ever stop in Drydens ?

Found a field of it where I often hunt. Old field was corn or alfalfa for cows and now it looks like he is trying something else. I thought it was Christmas trees before I got up to it. Plants are coming out of a plastic strip like in the picture as shown on post 1 and look to be around 4 to 5 feet tall and quite bushy. I will have to talk to the farmer since it is all gated off and now posted as no trespassing. I wonder if the deer eat it?

No never been in there. Guys at work like it. Heard the one shop across from Walmart is pricey.

Yes deer will eat it, run through it and tear it up.

We have patches of hemp from WW2 days when they raised it for rope. They call it "Iowa Ditch", I'm told it is worthless as dope, but the law treats it like the real thing.
Spray kills it, but it comes back.
Posted By: champlain_islander Re: Update on Hemp - 09/29/19
Must be a lot of it growing around here. The other day I could see from about a half mile away a large field of what looked like Christmas trees off from one of our interstate spurs. I mentioned to my wife that the big tree farm now would have some competition. I talked to a local in that area the other day and he said it was hemp. Must be some money in it.

There is some money in hemp, but Im afraid people are going to be disappointed this fall in the prices their crops bring. A lot of people hoping for 50k/acre are going to be very disappointed. There is A LOT more cbd hemp planted this year than last. Id guess processing might be a bottleneck this year. Even if it tests hot, chances of getting high from it are about nill. Govt set THC limits extremely low. Most good thc weed tests 20% or higher and hemp must be below .3%. I doubt anyone would want it for recreational use even if it got up to 5% thc... I know a guy that is growing 100 acres of cbd hemp this year. Will be interesting to see how he does.

Correct. One of my niece's husbands family has been growing it ever since it was first started here, about 10 years ago. They have had problems getting their money for what they've sold. When the buyer has the cash, they make some big bucks, and when the buyer doesn't have, they are stuck with it. But, apparently the opportunities are there, so they keep growing more and more.

There is a lot of hemp in my part of the world. I've seen one farm with 300 tillable acres planted entirely in hemp, and every Mennonite has grown at least 5 acres. I asked them about their market, and they say they are raising it 3 different ways.........one will cut and dried in barns like tobacco, one will be cut and dried in the field, then hauled off to market to be ground up and turned into oil I'm guessing, and the third way is for hemp that is to be turned into cigarettes.

I've also heard the $50,000 an acre figure being tossed out. I have been told it takes $20,000 an acre to put the crop out, and it cannot be sprayed with at least 90% or more of the most used chemicals that farmers use. It's supposed to be an organic crop for the most part, at least what is grown here is. However, I've been told that the Mennonites are going out at night and spraying some chemicals that are banned. One of them more or less admitted such to me, saying that the chemical residue would be long gone before the hemp was sold.

Also, banks will not loan farmers money to grow hemp, nor will crop insurance cover it. But, there sure are a lot of folks growing the stuff who I doubt have all the money to finance it. They got the money from somewhere.

My friend that grows it in Sumner co cannot spray it. Says he won't introduce any adulterants.

Been doing his for 3 years now.

The processing is the bottleneck
And getting the clones at the start of the season is expensive and iffy.

He hopes to get his own processing equipment with proceeds from this year's crop and then forward market it himself.

Said a finished processed liter of pure cbd oil was about $5,000

I do know that my neighbor got permission to spray his this year, because worms were eating it up. He had to use specific instructions on how to do it. He can't spray anything for the weeds, and his Mexicans and their weedeaters have spent the summer in the hemp. Kept it pretty clean to. The Mennonites go out at night, and spray the weeds when nobody can see them......lol.

It is insurable starting in 2020 per RMA. After inputs, current average yields and market prices, per acre profit is essentially neck and neck with corn... if market prices stay the same but commercial implements become readily available for large scale operations margins swing in favor of hemp.

According to the local birdcage liner we've got 50K acres of it in the state. There's at least two fields of it that I'm aware of close to the house. One has a sign saying the crop is low THC and is for CBD. All female plants with big buds.

According to the state liquor control board, who regulates the growth and licenses it, Oregon has enough dope within the state, that every man woman and child in the state could stay stoned 24/7....for the next 6 years....

Down this way, Josephine and Jackson county still lead the rest of the counties in the state by a wide margin, of the number of illegal grows all over the place....

From the WW 2 days when it was grown to make rope for the military, and transported by trains across the country....
back in the 70s in my travels coast to coast being in the military, they use to have to burn off large sections of the railroad, in the spring due to the seeds from those that feel thru the cracks in the box cars, were still growing each spring...

came across a big burn in 1977, when I was heading to my assignment at Ft Lewis out in Washington... was driving from New England to WA state.. from No Dakota, I crossed into Canada and took TC1 across Manitoba, Saskatchewan and most of Alberta... their was a large area in Sask, that they were blocking the highway, while they burned off the rail lines for a long stretch......the wind shifted and the smoke blew towards the traffic stopped....we were all getting pretty high with the smoke blowing our way....

Saw an old rest area on US 2 in Montana, that it had grown all over it....the State had all but the side walks blocked off, with that Orange Police Tape...Do Not Cross line...with the rest area still open....and Old VW bus with CA plates pulled up and parked next to my old Volvo Wagon, they got out and stretched, as I was getting in my car to leave... they said hi, and I pointed to the dope, with "Check this out".... their eyes flew open wide...as I was leaving the rest area, they were out there with garbage bags, shoving it into them as fast as they could... all 4 of them from out of the bus....an old railway line was just to the north side of the rest area...so i am sure that is where it came from....

not being a doper, I have no clue if it was smokeable or not....I just thought it was funny, with the hippies out of the bus, gathering it up like they were... kinda like out of a Cheech and Chong movie...

My great Grampa grew hemp for the war effort and I have pictures of him standing next to the field of it, I would have to say it was at least 12 feet high minimum with some of it reaching 15 feet high. It used to be grown all along the Trinity River from west of Fort Worth to past east of Dallas. This was also a very tall plant. You can still to this day find patches of it.

There is an article in today's Billings Gazette about the Hemp raisers in Montana. Nice looking crops, but when 27 people were asked if they made a profit, none raised their hands.
I guess the Govt. keps a real close eye on the producers and how much or what percentage the THC is. One fertilizer salesman told one of the producers, he could sell them fertilizer that would bump up the THC to make it better! ??

I didn't read the whole article though!

Ken
Posted By: Jim_Conrad Re: Update on Hemp - 09/29/19
There is so much BS involved Ken....its pathetic.

There were producers up here who seeded three times.

None of it came up. Paid for the seed each time.

They will raise it again next year probably........or go broke trying!

Fertilizer and seed costs are extravagant...especially on dry land like up here.

Then you set on the crop because the fly by night bastards move on.

Supply has far outpaced demand, even at this early stage.

Its been growing along the South Branch of the Potomac in WV since WWII.
Seeds spread from farmers fields and washed downstream. If you mess with it you break the law. Rumor has it you would get sick before you got high from it.

Honestly, if the local growers haven't went along there and planted some good
stuff among the feral plants, they are dumber than I think. Having seen some
of the things they come up with, many aren't dumb. Just stoned.

Heck, a notorious local guy got caught with close to 2k plants.
While they were searching his home, someone wondered about the backhoe
with the bucket up in the air in the driveway.
They lowered it, and found where he nursed the little plants.
In the driveway, beside a busy road.
Lower the bucket in the evening,
water, weed, whatever.
Run it back up.
Cars driving by 30 feet away.
He had almost 200 seedlings in there.

How weird,I just checked into my favorite motel in Ely, Nv. and the mgr. told me that 1/2 their rooms were being rented by Australians brought in to start a large hemp operation on what was a hay farm north of Lajes Junction on Hwy 93. She is a funny person, said that the workers were either Australians or from Sweden, and that the owner was an indian but not a real indian. She is Shoshonegrin

Weasel Rus, what is the real story? That may be the best Elk depredation tag in the state.

Seafire,

your story reminds me of a friend from the neighborhood back in the HS days of the early 70's.

He had relatives in Kansas, went back to visit, saw the ditch weed and gathered bags of it to fill his Volkswagon bug to the brim.

Brought it back to San Diego and sold it to the sailors when they got out of NTC and went to Ocean and Mission beaches.

One could smoke a baggie full and not get high.

I drive by Virginia's largest Hemp crop coming to and from work daily.
It is being grown/farmed by Matt Hagan[drag racer] who happens to be from here and also has a large local beef farm here.

Couple of weeks back they had to destroy aprox 1/6 of the crop due to high THC levels.

A week or two before that as they were clearing more overgrown land[burning brush] and they left an excavator too close and it burned that night, still sitting beside the interstate in the field.

One evening last week as I went by a plume of thick white smoke was rolling out of the building/barn they are using.

I suppose it's been a learning experience.
