Was on another thread and got to really wondering about bullet choice for my .270. I am not a reloader so have been using federal premium in 130g for deer and shot a cow elk. I have been reading and hearing a lot about the hornady eld-x in 145g. I also wonder about federal premium in 150g. I guess I need to go shoot them all but just wondering from you guys with the ballistic brains and guys with personal hunting experience...is there really going to be a noticeable difference?? I am going bear hunting in the spring and want to be sure of accurate hard hitting round. thanks
I have been pleased with the Nosler Accubond in 140gr. Bear and deer have been exits and fast kills.
I don't plan on shooting past 600 yards so there's no need to look any further than the 130gr Federal Fusion for me.....

My "go to 270 bullet".
Great question. So many good choices out there it’s hard to pick one. 129 Barnes LRX and 145 Horn Eldx for me.
The new Edge TLR and Sierra Gamechanger plus the Nosler offers look good to.
I used a 270 win for over 30 years, both in lower 48 and Alaska. I started with 130 coreloks and once I began reloading went with 130 and 150 gr partitions. I couldn't tell the difference between the two in the field. 130 partitions killed moose as easily as 150s. I settled on the 150s for everything. If I were using a 270win these days I'd be shooting the 150 partitions. Ymmv.
I have been using Hornady Superformance in 130 GMX for everything from Deer to Moose and haven't recovered a bullet yet, including on a big bull. Great monometal bullet and accurate in my Mauser. Some people haven't had great accuracy with the Superformance, but it works well in my rifle.
I run Federal 150gr Nosler Partitions for everything, including moose and bears.
140 Accubonds and 130 Barnes in 270, WSM and Weatherby
130 grain partitions and the Barnes 130 grain.
Have not needed another bullet weight to get the job done.
Lots of good 270 bullets out there. I like 150NP in mine, over RL26, about 3025fps or so. I love Accubond as well. My monometal experience isn't as good as some others have had, your mileage will vary.
I shot the superformance with another caliber. I didn't like it. Accuracy when sighting was ok at best and it didn't perform well on kills. Think was just too fast. Any thoughts on the eld-x 145g?
If I wasn't a reloader, I'd use Nosler's loaded ammo with the 150gr. Partition or the Federal version with the same bullet. It's my opinion that the 150gr Nosler Partition is as good as it gets for the .270 Winchester.
I am a reloader but for a friend who isn't we tested what shot best and settled on a 150 factory Federal. Came in handy as he used it to take a massive elan that wondered on to our lease.
If it can take an elan- it can take an elk.
I've shot a bunch of elk with a 270 using both Speer 150 gr Hotcores and 150 gr Partitions. 130's and 150's shoot to almost the same POI and the 150 hits a bit harder when it gets there. Either weight works, though. I didn't notice any particular difference in performance between the Speers and PTs. No elk ever survived either one. Both penetrated well and retained weight about the same. The Speer would squish more but still kept the weight.
I have zero experience with the ABLR , but standard Accubonds work very well.
Verg, With many disappointed people and my own tests with the ELD-X, I’d “not” use it......especially with bear. It may be adequate for deer, but, the heavier bone construction, dense muscle mass, long hair, and potentially a lot of fat.....your asking a lot of a relatively “fragile” bullet!
My choice would be a Barnes 130 TTSX, in the VOR TX brand. If you don’t care for the Barnes Bullets, find some factory loaded 150 grain Nosler Partitions! Eith one should be a great performer in your .270! memtb
Still loading the 130 gr Partitions. Haven’t seen a reason to change.
I’ve been using 150 grain bullets in the 270 for about 35 years. Last game taken with the 150 grain bullet was a buffalo in South Dakota. I’m partial to Nosler Partitions.
It’s hard to beat a 270 when it comes down to it. Lots of killing power for little recoil.

My "go to 270 bullet".
It's hard to beat.

Yup.
Over 200 big game kills with 60 gr. H4831 and 130 partitions including 6 elk. Nuff said.
Any thoughts on the eld-x 145g?
I find it interesting how a while back the hot thing for the expert hunter was "premium" bullets but now some of the hottest bullets on the market are...
Hornady Interlocks. Okay, they're extra pointy Hornady Interlocks with un-meltable red plastic tips, but they're cup-and-cores all the same.
"The ELD-X is a revolutionary new style of bullet and raises the bar for all projectiles."Who knew cup-and-cores were this amazing!?
All I have ever used is a 130 grain Speer soft point.

Probably the same Speer Hotcore that I've had so much good luck with. I just used a 150 instead.

All these great hunters using the gay 270. Well, I, I, I never knew-- so many fire guys were as perceptive as me.
I just switched to the 145 hornady long range mo fo for accuracy but I haven't kilt anything with it yet.

Do the TTSXs have greater copper fouling?
Since they started putting the grooves it the X bullet I’ve never had any copper fouling issues in any caliber and a dozen or so rifles.
I’ve only shot 15-20 or so deer with the 270.... most with plain Jane 130 Hornady ( cause they were the cheapest)but a few with 140 AB. Only bullet that didn’t shoot clear through was the 140AB....but every deer hit where it was supposed to didn’t live long.

I also use the old and tired 7x57.

Like OConnor said, "...the unbelted magnum."
Didnt Elanor take a tiger with one, and they had no interlocks.
Btw, I would have no problem taking an elk through the ribs with an interlock or partition in 243 Win.

No! Perhaps if the rifle bore is a bit rough. But, through a good bore, there should be no issues. I believe that I could easily go 100 or more rounds without cleaning! memtb
I use either the Sierra 150 gr. Game King or the Nosler 150 gr. Partition in my .270s. Either load will shoot to the same point of impact without having to do any sight change. Got lucky as hell when I worked up those two loads.

Still old school here, 150gr Partitions for all things 270 WCF.
