Kenneth;
Good evening to you sir, I hope this finds you well.

While I've purchased stuff online for years with PayPal, I've never sold anything with it.

Our youngest daughter was setting up some tutoring or something similar and asked me a month ago.

This is what I found online, but again that's not based on personal experience with them as a seller.

"2.9 percent
If you are a merchant or business that uses PayPal to accept payments from your customers and clients, then PayPal takes 2.9 percent of the payment plus 30 cents per transaction before putting the money in your account. This fee is only on the business side of the transaction; the customer isn't charged anything"

Hopefully someone with actual experience will verify that number.

All the best whichever way you decide and Happy Christmas to you and yours this season.

Dwayne

If you are one of the lucky ones for which paypal will work properly. I spent a week and a accumulated a couple hours on the phone during that week trying to get paypal to recognize either on of two accounts.

We never could get an account to work. And while the situation is rare, during discussion here in a previous thread, a couple of guys claimed the same difficulty.

If you have Paypal linked to a credit card and seller,s Paypal is linked to a checking account you may get a cash equivalent fee charge on your credit card. Your credit card views it the same as a cash withdrawal from your credit card.

I've used PayPal for years both buying and selling. If you're selling and you don't want any hassle then stipulate that you'll only do friends and family. For example I once sold a guy some hot rod stuff and he filed a dispute and said it was no good. The only way I won the dispute and didn't have to refund him was I stipulated if the buyer wasn't satisfied they had to return the items on there dime. He was trying to keep the items and get his money back. I've seen that tried more than once. On the other hand if your buying a big ticket item you want the buyer protection and if you opt to use friends and family you're taking a risk on getting screwed. Obviously common sense prevails. Don't buy and pay with friends and family if it's someone new on a forum. Always use a credit card to fund your PayPal and definitely not a debit card. You have next to zero recourse with a debit card but a credit card company will get your money back if you can reasonably prove your case. I've only had a couple shady deals with PayPal and they both worked in my favor because I keep emails etc. I use PayPal several times a week and I feel comfortable doing so.

I keep a separate account just for Paypal. Don’t link your primary account under any circumstances. If there is a problem, Pp can actually freeze your account indefinitely. I’ve heard the horror stories so I don’t risk it.

I do not use F&F unless I absolutely know the person on the other end. If the guy has heartburn with that, I pass on the item because I’m willing to pay the fees so it’s not coming out of his pocket. He’s not out anything so what is the difference? To me, the minimal added fee is just cheap insurance.

If the deal goes south and you pay with F&F you are SOL with no recourse whatsoever. You basically just gifted him the money in the hopes that he would send you the goods. If he decides to tell you to GFY, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it because you have effectively given him the money. That’s what F&F is for, it’s for gifting friends and family money. If you’re the trusting type and willing to risk that with strangers on the internet, you’re a very trusting soul indeed.

OTOH, If you pay with Goods and Services you can file a formal dispute and 90% of the time you’ll get your money back if something goes wrong.

I have had hundreds of trouble free PayPal transactions. If you don't know someone, don't F&F funds if it's an amount that matters to you... Fee is only 3.5%.

One spot of caution is linking to a bank account. I'd recommend a separate account set up just for use with PayPal... Or a low dollar account. Mine are all like that! If you accidentally hit send $8000 instead of $8.00. You just gave PayPal access to $8000 of it in a linked account. Someone pays you some money, you can simply transfer in to your account. No fee. Or get a PayPal debit card, use for purchases or ATM withdrawal.

It works various way. FF from your PP to Their PP. No fees
But FF from your bank account will have fees.
They don't need a PP to send you money. You can send a PP invoice they can pay with a card., Card info is not divulged...
Fully automated transaction don't cost them, so they don't charge you. F&F goes from your PP to another's without leaving PP to a third party. It's fuggin free.

My take on the ant-gun rants. It's their business and likely gives their company less legal exposure. All wise on their part. BFD.

Some transaction on here have been done deals in a matter of minutes rather than waiting days, and mailing and bullchit... Works like a freaking dream.

I have had several thing to contest also. I did not get item, seller doesn't respond. PP takes over. Seller doesn't respond. PP pays you. It's easy. If it was sent F&F they ain't going to do that.

Also, I use PayPal checkout a lot. click click click. PP takes it out of my bank account and pays the vendor. I never had to give the vendor any info. Easy peasy. No fee. Unless I am going PayPal credit which is like 27 damned percent. LOL

My wife does glass art and has sold quit a few pieces on Facebook Marketplace using PP. Once we got it set up, it's been flawless. Their fee is worth the cost to avoid dealing with rubber checks and waiting for the mail. She just adds the fees to the item price so the customer IS paying for it. You don't make a profit by giving away stuff. There is no free anything in the business world. The cost is always included in the price.

Its not cheating. It's offered fee free because it's internal and costs PayPal nothing and they have to do nothing nor guarantee nothing.. . Just electrons moving... Most banks let you set up additional checking accounts. You can do it online in a few minutes. Set up one just for PP. Then you can transfer the money in and out from your regular account.

I've done thousands of Paypal transaction over many years without trouble. Usage has declined dramatically since they came out anti-gun.
Posted By: RockyRaab Re: school me on Paypal - 12/08/19
My publisher pays my book royalties only with Paypal, so I have to have an account there. I have had one fraudulent exchange with PP, all entirely my fault because I responded to one of those scam emails saying my PP account lost my password and would I please remind them. Stupid on my part. Anyway, PP voided the subsequent transactions on my account and refunded every cent. (Yes, I changed passwords after that.)

Everything else has been flawless. When I buy anything using PP, I use PPCredit and pay it off immediately because PPCredit gives me even more buyer protection that regular PP.

If you use PP a lot as a business, it is vital to link PP to a completely separate bank account with a very small balance, and make sure that account has a "No Overdraw" option selected. That way, you are mostly insulated from fraud.

For occasional private deals, PP is just fine, at least as secure as any other payment method, and instant both ways.

PayPal charges to help you pay for goods. They are in business and incur expenses to provide this service. If you can rationalize cheating them out of their small transaction fee, you should reexamine your personal ethics.

If a casino can't make money with a game, they won't have the game. In the long run, the house always wins. Likewise, any lending institution won't offer any deal where they can't make money. If they can't, the deal won't be offered. The bank always wins. It's called business.
Posted By: RockyRaab Re: school me on Paypal - 12/08/19
No cost? They pay all their people, have all those servers, use all that power, and run a bazillion-dollar business for free? I think you might want to rethink that comment.

If they offer an F&F no-fee option, they're LOSING money with it. If you LIE to take advantage of it, it's stealing.

No. They are making lot's of money. They collect fees on external transactions and on transactions with buyer protection. Why does anyone think they would allow it if they were being abused? They know what they are doing. You don't need to have sympathy for the poor big bank getting scammed.

Pretty much how I use PayPal. Large dollar items go through "goods and services". F&F pretty much reserved for friends, family, good reputations, Yet if it's large dollar amount I may use "goods & services". I have a separate dedicated savings account reserved for PayPal. With this dedicated account I can transfer money from my PayPal to this account, then withdraw from the dedicated account and deposit it in regular savings. The dedicated PayPal account has about $25 in it, anything more gets withdrawn.

Call me paranoid, but no one has/gets the authority to withdraw money from my/our accounts.

As a side note to paying with F&F... I just bought a 20 dollar item from 24hr classified and paid with F&F. The seller gets the full 20, but I was charged $0.88. So a fee is charged, just a matter of who pays. grin

Really? When I sell something here I offer Paypal F&F, buyer covers the fee, or USPS money order. Why would you avoid that? I figure the buyer can make the choice and I haven't had any issues doing it this way, regardless of the method chosen by the buyer.

I have a 2d checking account for personal use, too. My retirement & SS come in by direct deposit to an account with no debit cards, etc attached. All the money stays there until needed. I don't even have any check blanks for it. I have a 2d account that I use to pay bills and there's a debit card that we use. I transfer money to that acct as needed so there's always a minimal amount in it to steal.

PayPal is so confusing. No need to add 3.5% if not needed.. Some guys are likely speaking from vast experience of a dozen or so uses. Selling a product to complete stranger is a whole nothing deal.

Yeah, if he pays via PayPal, you will have to pay a fee.
I receive payments for sold items via PayPal, then electronically deposit them into my checking account. When I pay for items via PayPal, I have PayPal take the payment from my credit card.

I got a PayPal account because an entity paying me for a bird count paid me that way. Over the years I’ve received thousands of dollars, no problems beside PP’s minor cut of the action.

In the re-enacting hobby purchasing from private individuals or small businesses for one- or few-of-a-kind items via PayPal is usual, even bought my excellent ‘Bess that way for $1,000+

When I debt-consolidated a while back, my PayPal account did not appear anywhere in my credit history which I thought was odd.

Paypal Fee calculator

For those of you who may fear the Paypal fee or maybe are a little numerically challenged. Just type in whatever the requested amount of the item is and it will tell you either how much to request or send in order to come up with that sum. The Paypal cut is relatively small. Type in an amount to try it and you’ll see.

I like it, the money comes or goes instantly, so you get your item that much quicker rather than have to wait for the pony express. Also there is the Goods and Services protection which you definitely do not have sending in a payment.

Some people outright hate Paypal, but I suspect a lot of them haven’t even ever used it and are just going by what they’ve heard or read. I haven’t had any problems. They’ve made my buying/selling experience a lot easier. YMMV...
