Who in the world thought putting a paper product in a drink was a good idea ?

I had heard of such but living in the Midwest, we haven’t seen the craziness in person.

Fast forward to this week when I worked in Seattle all week. Needless to say, I was introduced to this moronic idea.

Some people could screw up an anvil with a rubber mallet.
Nothing like leaving your straw in your drink for a few hours after lunch and your straw has turned into a wet noodle when you go to grab a drink.

The level of dumbfuckery knows no limits.

I remember paper straws from my childhood. 1960s. Kind of a wax paper straw. We thought plastic straws were so much better when they came out.
Never was one to use a straw until people started whining about them, now I make sure to use at least one every time I buy food.

We got a new sandwich shop over in a Monett (MO for the non SWMO crowd) and they started up with paper straws. They didn’t last long after all the griping. We got plastic after that.

Was in Montreal yesterday and had to drink my A&W through one. No thanks.

Saw a piece a while back where a woman actually died when her stainless steel Eco-straw stabbed her when she fell.

Anyone recall when they started perforating straw wrappers so you couldn't launch them into your sibling's eye?

I remember the paper straws , good for about 10 minutes before they started getting soggy .

Chinese ships apparently dump tons of plastic and other garbage over the side while at sea. Kinda doubt that paper straws are going to make up for all that, but try telling that to the Kali Kookybirds.

On a positive note, the Kraft process that produces paper, including presumably straws, also produces DMSO, which you can put on those jaw muscles you strain trying to suck your soda pop through them.

I remember when drinks came in re-useable glass containers (even long neck beer bottles) and if you got thirsty you drank out of water jug or a water hose. I made a lot of money picking up soda bottles (mostly Coke bottles) and quart milk bottles when I was a kid. You could probably drive a nail with the old Coke bottles but the milk bottles were pretty fragile.

For most of my "recycling career", the depisit on soda bottles was $.02. Still, it wasn't hard to collect enough to finance a sugar binge.

I remember nickel Cokes and nickel payphones (payphones?).
Posted By: Valsdad Re: Paper straws, really? - 12/14/19
First world problem as Salty said.

Don't bother me a bit as I generally only get a straw once a week or so when I buy gas at the local Rez gas station. They give a free fountain drink with a fill up so I get an ice tea. And likely because they are a Rez, they are still giving out plastic straws even here in Kommiefornia.

And I'm old enough to remember paper straws were all we had.

If you can snort your Coke from a century note, I guess you can drink your Coke from a paper straw.

Paper straws make great bottle rockets. Just fill them with 3fg black powder. I was real disappointed when plastic straws replaced the paper ones as plastic straws do not make good bottle rockets.

Paper straws were the only option when I was a kid. It didn't get any soggier than the paper cup. Of course I haven't drank anything through a straw in about 50 years.

I prefer to drink out of the side of a cup or glass. However if you are traveling in a vehicle a lid and straw are better to avoid spills, that or a bottle and cap. For the left's information. China and third world countries are the ones who pollute the oceans, not Americans. We either bury our trash or incinerate it. Almost every time I watch a survival show where people are placed near a beach in the tropics. They find all kinds of trash to use for survival purposes.

I too took my wagon around our neighborhood and collected coke and other soft drink bottles and at first got a penny for them, later 2 cents. Used the money to buy candy, ice cream, or various stuff.

I remember individually wrapped paper straws. Then some jerk found a way to put the wrapper on so we couldn't shoot them at each other. In school today they'd probably have some random resource officer arrest you if you did that, definitely need to be drugged to control your violent nature.

I won't disagree with you about China and third world countries polluting the oceans, but to say not Americans is a bit misleading.

I worked a job where I pumped about 11 cubic feet a second of water, from the upper 5' of flow, out of the Columbia River, through a screen with 1/8" holes in it. During the course of 24 hours I have filled a bread bag with plastic trash. At that time of year the dams on the Columbia were releasing between 100,000 and 500,000 cubic feet per second.

The math would tend to show that what I was gathering from such a small percentage of the flow when upscaled to the flow of the river would probably equate to tons per day of plastic flowing out the mouth of that river.

The types of plastic amazed me, everything from worm container lids to Visqueen used for landscaping and soil erosion control, to part of toys, and the ubiquitous blue tarps.

Now, think of what's flowing out of every other river in the US of A and tell me Americans aren't polluting the oceans.

Again, China, India, most of South Asia and Africa are the big contributors, but we aren't guiltless.

Local Bobby Flay's Burger Palace. https://www.livecasinohotel.com/locations/bobbys-burger-palace

Posted By: Jim in Idaho Re: Paper straws, really? - 12/15/19
You can also press a paper straw flat lengthwise, then squeeze along the fold to open it and flatten it again at 90 degrees to the original fold. Squeeze that open and you have a square straw. Every six year old knew how to do that. Can't do it with plastic so no wonder kids these days have no inkling of geometry or engineering.

But paper or plastic, the procedure is the same, assuming the straws are individually wrapped in paper.
1. Open one end of wrapper and withdraw straw about 2 inches.
2. Twist other end of wrapper tightly into a point.
3. Blow on the straw to launch the wrapper like a projectile and hit your sister in the face.
4. Pretend to be abashed by Mom's rebuke.

5. At the end of the milkshake, try to suck up the last little bit and make loud sslurrpple noises until the 4th or 5th repetition of #4. Fwiw, these plastic straws with the little spoon portion are worthless for that unless you turn it around, and then the sharp plastic spoon part cuts your tongue.

Either way, first world problems for sure.

I still prefer to buy our milk in 1/2 gallon paper cartons. Wish they had the ones without the little plastic screw on top, would save me some work. I have to rip those out so I can use the carton to get the fire started. The waxed carton will help start it right up.

Not pollution free, as I'm still putting out smoke and carbon, but our recycling program is primitive here to say the least.

Yes they are Geno. Them and other bivalves like clams make their living siphoning huge amounts of water to get the bits of plankton etc. for food. Unfortunately that includes bad stuff and they're going to get the effects of it long before a fish for instance because they're basically a filter for everything in the water column. I guess the microplastics plug up their system and do harm.
Posted By: Valsdad Re: Paper straws, really? - 12/15/19
I've been reading about it for years Salty. I'm a fish head, so anything marine related that comes up on my radar gets looked into.

Especially bad for filter feeders as they are not gaining any energy from the ingestion of microplastics. They already have to filter out sediment and indigestible items in the normal cost of doing business, now add this on top and they are expending energy to feed without getting the same benefit.

Not only bivalves, but look at the other forms of life that get their food resources in the same or similar manner. Many forms of plankton, corals, etc. Compound that up the food chain, less energy in each smaller item eaten means less energy taken in per unit of energy expended by larger critters.

Some research is pointing to our use of synthetics in our clothing as another source of microplastics, not just the breaking down of what we generally think of as "plastic pollution". Check out the dryer vent screen, a lot of the same stuff goes out the pipe with the laundry rinse water, and sewage treatment systems don't deal with particulate matter that small.

Oh well, nothing we can do about it as China and others are still going to pollute..............so we might as well also?

Seems I recall some company back about them times had some bronze tips?

Think they'd work again?

Regarding plastic ammo remnants, in the trash I mentioned coming out of the Columbia among the common items were shot shell wads and sometimes the shell itself. A lot of times the petals to the wads had broken off so I just got the base. All of it going right out the Columbia to the sea.
