Who in the world thought putting a paper product in a drink was a good idea ?

I had heard of such but living in the Midwest, we haven’t seen the craziness in person.

Fast forward to this week when I worked in Seattle all week. Needless to say, I was introduced to this moronic idea.

Some people could screw up an anvil with a rubber mallet.
Nothing like leaving your straw in your drink for a few hours after lunch and your straw has turned into a wet noodle when you go to grab a drink.

The level of dumbfuckery knows no limits.

I remember paper straws from my childhood. 1960s. Kind of a wax paper straw. We thought plastic straws were so much better when they came out.

Never was one to use a straw until people started whining about them, now I make sure to use at least one every time I buy food.

Um, don't leave the straw in the drink for a few hours? Nothing new here I remember paper straws as a kid too. First world problem.

We got a new sandwich shop over in a Monett (MO for the non SWMO crowd) and they started up with paper straws. They didn’t last long after all the griping. We got plastic after that.

Was in Montreal yesterday and had to drink my A&W through one. No thanks.

I don't mind old school paper, but the idea of saving the world is just a control thing.

Saw a piece a while back where a woman actually died when her stainless steel Eco-straw stabbed her when she fell.

Anyone recall when they started perforating straw wrappers so you couldn't launch them into your sibling's eye?

I remember the paper straws , good for about 10 minutes before they started getting soggy .

Chinese ships apparently dump tons of plastic and other garbage over the side while at sea. Kinda doubt that paper straws are going to make up for all that, but try telling that to the Kali Kookybirds.

On a positive note, the Kraft process that produces paper, including presumably straws, also produces DMSO, which you can put on those jaw muscles you strain trying to suck your soda pop through them.

I remember when drinks came in re-useable glass containers (even long neck beer bottles) and if you got thirsty you drank out of water jug or a water hose. I made a lot of money picking up soda bottles (mostly Coke bottles) and quart milk bottles when I was a kid. You could probably drive a nail with the old Coke bottles but the milk bottles were pretty fragile.

For most of my "recycling career", the depisit on soda bottles was $.02. Still, it wasn't hard to collect enough to finance a sugar binge.

I remember nickel Cokes and nickel payphones (payphones?).

First world problem as Salty said.

Don't bother me a bit as I generally only get a straw once a week or so when I buy gas at the local Rez gas station. They give a free fountain drink with a fill up so I get an ice tea. And likely because they are a Rez, they are still giving out plastic straws even here in Kommiefornia.

And I'm old enough to remember paper straws were all we had.

If you can snort your Coke from a century note, I guess you can drink your Coke from a paper straw.

Paper straws make great bottle rockets. Just fill them with 3fg black powder. I was real disappointed when plastic straws replaced the paper ones as plastic straws do not make good bottle rockets.

The new one they are introducing now is the wheatstock straw.

Seems like an OK idea to me.

Wonder how they actually work though. And I use so few I'm not in the market for 100 of them.
