Hey all, just made this video this morning while I was out riding my motorcycle. Very impressive military armament train just east of San Antonio headed west. A lot more tanks on this train than I'm used to seeing. Wonder where it was headed and why.

They desert training area out in California
Maybe the Sierra Army Depot in NE CA. My brother works there, I'll see what he can tell me.
Looks like a bct is headed to Ft Irwin for a rotatio.

That was my first duty station back in the day.
Little fun fact ft Irwin has no railhead. All equipment goes to Yrmo

All vehicles are unloaded their it’s a 24 hour operation, track vehicles are line hauled to Irwin and wheeled vehicles are convoyed Fort Irwin.

Well, the weather should be mild this time of year.
Went there for summer camp, one year.
End of April - freeze water in your "steel pot"
Toward the end of May - 127 in the shade.

The Japanese in the US were interned in the 40's for fear of them spying.
Headed to the Virginia Lobby Day...but like the army is, they're runnin' a little late.
They were going to be used against us in Richmond Monday but they changed their minds last minute when they heard fireball and steve4102 warned us of their nefarious plans. If you watch, there will be a train carrying the UN troops, death chambers and 1000's of body bags coming through right behind it.
NTC Ft Irwin baby. I loaded a battalion of armor onto train cars back in 84. Ft Stewart GA to NTC and return.

I'm assuming ID = Infantry Division?

Agree, headed to Ft Irwin. While stationed at Ft Stewart from 85-89 I participated in a couple rotations at NTC.

I don't know about that... I enjoyed being part of Army Aviation for a couple of years..

and have served supporting armor units out on training in a medical capacity...

I will concede to, Armor sure has some fun toys to play with...

Was General Schwartzkopf still the Commander when you were there?

I think that it is actually self propelled artillery, they look like M109A6's to me, with 155mm howitzers.

Yes but only for a month or so. I arrived in May of 85 and I believe there was a change of command in June or July.

Think you need to change your avatar to grandpa Simpson. Much more of a tanker. Or the guy with one arm, but he was probably infantry..

I'm trying to remember train tracks at the stumps. It's been since 1970 that I was there, and can't recall the tracks. But then I don't remember a lot of late 60's and early 70's!😬

I spent 20 years working on tanks, even served with 79S, and I'm pretty sure we fired tank rounds at Fort Irwin California, Yakima Training Center, Washington. Fort Carson, Colorado, and Fort Knox, Kentucky. Maybe 29 Palms is the only place the Marines shoot main gun rounds.
Every month a Brigade (7000 soldiers) goes to Fort Irwin CA at the National Training Center to train. Many heavy mech units bring some of their own equipment. They railhead into Yermo CA, unload and road march across the desert to the NTC.
