Canada just announced many many millions more for charities and non profits helping the young and the old. High density cities need and want more. Both sides of the border do not want to use armed forces to contain cities, contain States and Provinces.
Who will pay for all this when it's over? Governments only control collective finances. Spend now...collect later, figure it out later.

That is an astute post, I would add one little thing, maybe it's just semantics, but in my view, the split transcends political boundaries. It's more sociological than political, it's in our very dna...it's urban vs rural that defines the split, so many people do not participate in the political process that political numbers (only 56% in 2016) are meaningless. Maybe it comes down to those who want to be taken care of, and those who want to take care of themselves. Like Toot said, the die is cast. Balkanization may be the end result. I don't think the flyover people will ever consign themselves to being responsible for the care and feeding and well being of the urban elites who have heaped scorn and derision on the deplorables for the last 100 years.
IMO this is the legacy of the magic negroe. Divide the country as it has never been divided before along any lines you can find. Political, racial, urban vs. rural, gun owners vs. anti-gunners, rich vs. poor and middle class, blue collar vs. white collar, military vs. civilian. Get my drift?
I think current events are changing the minds of a lot of people who are undecided and are have yet to take a position. Those who have already decide are polarizing to the right or left.
I don't think true leaders are forced to take a side. True leaders lead based on their position on the issues, whether that be for the good of the people or to consolidate wealth and power unto themselves. Difficult times reveal the true character of people.

In the end, the liberals will win. Americans and Australians are far more similar than dissimilar as people, but a major difference exists in politics and political viewpoints. Whereas Americans are divided into 2 camps, Aussies are singular in their disrespect of all things politics. The culture is to "Throw the bastards out" at every election. Nothing much changes because they are both left of center political parties. That is why you always need to check to see who the current Prime Minister is because the way the Westminster System works, the PM is still a member of parliament who has to meet with and support his constituents, so is always accountable to both the people, his electorate and his party which elects him as their leader. You can make an appointment to meet with the Prime Minister as your local member, if you live within his electorate and he is obliged to spend so much time doing so. Aussies a less shy and don't usually need motivation to express themselves. A spade is still a shovel and PC language is considered a lie and the user untrustworthy.

No place in America for any democrat any more. The left, democrats, liberals, communist, socialist, hollywood, snowflakes, the media, and islamites they want power and control of the people. They hate Americans, the Constitution, and the USA. They are voting to destroy jobs, health care and health care jobs, they for communism, destroying the unborn and the just born, they are destroying prisons, they want to destroy the stock market, and they want to destroy all the energy sector jobs. They want to band all weapons. They are for open borders. They want very high 90% taxes to give free education, free food, free health care, and free housing to illegals or anyone too lazy to work. I've been a bit caught up in this generational bagging on the millennials thing the last year or two. Now I realize that that's just another way we are being divided.
I typically try really hard to only discriminate based on psychographics not demographics. Meaning I try to make my judgments based on how a person thinks not age, race or otherwise.
