BERLIN – A Venezuelan navy ship fired shots at a German-owned cruise ship on March 30 and rammed into the passenger vessel, leading to the sinking of the warship in the Caribbean.
The Iranian regime-allied Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro accused the captain of the RCGS RESOLUTE cruise ship of “terrorism and piracy" and sought to force the ship into a new direction on the high seas. The cruise ship, which had no passengers on board and was flying under a Portuguese flag, has a reinforced hull that enables it to sail through ice water.

Venezuelan Navy attempts midnight boarding of five-star Antartic cruise ship RCGS Resolute. Resolute rams BVL Naiguatá capsizing and sinking warship. All crew accounted for. Resolute safely in Curacao port with minor damage to strengthened hull. https://www.infodefensa.com/latam/2...nar-contra-buque-pasajeros-resolute.html

Columbia Cruise Services, the Hamburg-based company that owns the RCGS RESOLUTE, issued a statement on Wednesday: “In the early morning hours of the 30th of March 2020 (local time), the cruise vessel RCGS RESOLUTE has been subject to an act of aggression by the Venezuelan Navy in international waters, around 13.3 nautical miles from Isla de Tortuga with 32 crew member and no passengers on board.”
The company added that “When the event occurred, the cruise vessel RCGS RESOLUTE has already been drifting for one day off the coast of the island to conduct some routine engine maintenance on its idle voyage to its destination, Willemstad/ Curaçao. As maintenance was being performed on the starboard main engine, the port main engine was kept on standby to maintain a safe distance from the island at any time.”
Columbia Cruise Services continued, stating that “Shortly after mid-night, the cruise vessel was approached by an armed Venezuelan navy vessel, which via radio questioning the intentions of the RCGS RESOLUTE’s presence and gave the order to follow to Puerto Moreno on Isla De Margarita. As the RCGS RESOLUTE was sailing in international waters at that time, the Master wanted to reconfirm this particular request resulting into a serious deviation from the scheduled vessel’s route with the company DPA.”
According to the statement, “While the Master was in contact with the head office, gun shots were fired and, shortly thereafter, the navy vessel approached the starboard side at speed with an angle of 135° and purposely collided with the RCGS RESOLUTE. The navy vessel continued to ram the starboard bow in an apparent attempt to turn the ship’s head towards Venezuelan territorial waters.”

The cruise company said the RCGS RESOLUTE sustained minor damages, not affecting vessel’s seaworthiness, it occurs that the navy vessel suffered severe damages while making contact with the ice-strengthened bulbous bow of the ice-class expedition cruise vessel RCGS RESOLUTE and started to take water.”
There were no deaths among the Venezuelan marines aboard the war ship. The Venezuelan authorities returned the navy personnel to safety.

The US Justice Department indicted the socialist President Maduro last month for running a criminal narcotics operation comprised of drug traffickers and terrorist groups.
The US State Department announced $15 million reward for information leading to the arrest or conviction of Maduro.
I picture a Wiener Dog attacking a Great Dane.....things won't go well for the Wiener Dog.
Lol, if your navy can’t best a cruise ship, you might be a third world s#it hole.......
Oops, that did not go as planned.

Probably a ransom attempt.
Sounds like a prediction of what would happen to Iran's Bass Boat Navy if they decided to stir up some crap on the other side of the world!

That's like a French Renault (car) ramming an invading Panzer IV just before getting "tread" upon and squashed like a bug.

May Be Venezuela will think twice before they try that one again.

Thats funny as heck right there !
Ships running in ice tend to have thick hulls.

And the Naiguata from the above link looks like it was a pretty modern and presumably expensive vessel. Definite Ooops!

Great way to lose a 262 foot ship.
Feel good story of the week here!
Did John Kerry get another Purple Heart in recognition?

Boing !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Notice how the Bass Boat Navy has been very very quiet since Trump took office.
Once upon a time, there wouldn't have been much left of Venezuela if they'd provoked Germany like that.
How embarrassing.
Perhaps this thread belongs with the aluminum boat thread, rivets versus welded. Should have brought a bigger boat.
Easy, your'e talking about the pride of the Democrat Party, Venezuela

Pres. Maduro is under indictment for drug trafficking with a $15 mill reward offered by the US. He probably wanted the cruise ship for his own personal use, or maybe as a way to move drugs internationally.
The article says the cruise ship rescued the navy sailors. They should have let them go down with the ship.

That made me literally LOL thanks!
Probably been a while since a Portuguese flagged ship won a naval engagement.
Remembering a bit of Great War action in the Faulklands. 1914. When another German liner mounted a muzzleloading siege mortar they mounted midship (found in old emplacement on the island) and shot Kerosene soaked Welsh anthracite onto the wooden deck of a British Cruiser. German captain was a big fan of Lord Admiral Nelson!

The story of Mimi and Toutou on Lake Tanganyika is another good one. (The Basis for Forrester’s novel, "The African Queen”.) Look it up.
Back in the late 70's my cousin bought a 76 chevy siverado pickup and wanted a good bumper for towing farm machinery. So I built him a farm bumper to be proud of. Fast forward about 3 months and he is in the city one day waiting for the stop light to turn green and feels a push that moved his pickup about 2 ft forward. Jumps out of his pickup to see what happened and there is a car sitting behind him with the hood, grill, and radiator all laying in the street in a mangled mess. He looks at the back of his pickup and the hitch is wet from going through the radiator and the paint is scratched on the bottom side of the bumper and that is the extent of the damage for him. Mess with the bull and you will end up on the short end. Still trying to figure out why they were messing with a cruse ship though. Somebody was bored and wanted to play, unfortunately they lost.
It sounds like a cleansing is required for Venezuela. I hope we get to it soon. We cannot allow Iran a foothold on this side of the world.
Boy, that's embarrassing.

Another success for socialism. Will the Venezuelan cpt get the everybody-is-a-winner medal for valentry while claiming the German cruiser ran into him, or will he “disappear” by tomorrow?

The Iranian Bass Boat Navy and Iran's leaders were calling the shots when chicken s*it O'bummer & Feel-em-up Biden and point man Horse face Kerry were running the country. Trump won't sit on his hands or "Lead form behind" like Barry did.
I love happy endings. Stupid is as stupid does.

Not only did the Venezulean navy destroyer pick a fight with and get sent to the bottom by a German cruise ship, it was a cruise ship operating with one engine! Good grief! Way to go, Venezulea.

True, but can you imagine what it would have been like had Hitler unleashed the SS on it.
Venezuela has had a toilet paper shortage for quite a while. Maybe they were policing for profit.
I wouldn't believe either side on this as of yet. The cruise line from what I understand is or has been in financial trouble and has recently been in impound in Argentina, with booked cruises having been canceled.

Here is the BBC report on this event

A Venezuelan navy coastal patrol boat sank in the Caribbean after allegedly ramming a cruise ship that it had ordered to change direction.

The owners of the Portuguese-flagged RCGS Resolute said the naval vessel Naiguata also fired shots in an "act of aggression in international waters”.

The collision left the cruise ship, which has a reinforced hull for sailing in icy waters, with only minor damage.

Venezuela accused the Resolute of an act of "aggression and piracy".

It also said it "did not rule out" that the cruise ship "was transporting mercenaries to attack military bases in Venezuela".

President Nicolás Maduro has previously accused the United States and other countries of plotting to overthrow him.

The incident took place near La Tortuga Island, a Venezuelan federal dependency, on 30 March.

Columbia Cruise Services, which operates the Resolute, said the cruise ship had been carrying out routine engine maintenance in international waters more than 13 nautical miles (24km) from La Tortuga.

A statement from the Hamburg-based company said that shortly after midnight, the Naiguata radioed the Resolute, questioning its intentions, and ordered the captain to follow it to a port on Isla Margarita, to the east.

"While the master was in contact with the head office, gunshots were fired and, shortly thereafter, the navy vessel approached the starboard side at speed... and purposely collided with the RCGS Resolute," it added.

"The navy vessel continued to ram the starboard bow in an apparent attempt to turn the ship’s head towards Venezuelan territorial waters."

Although the Resolute - a purpose-built polar expedition vessel - suffered minor damage, the patrol boat began taking on water after hitting its bulbous bow, according to the statement.

Columbia Cruise Services said the Resolute remained in the area for more than an hour and contacted rescue co-ordinators on the Dutch Caribbean island of Curaçao. All attempts to contact the Naiguata went unanswered and the Resolute eventually sailed to Willemstad on Curaçao, it added.

A statement by the Venezuelan military (in Spanish) accused the Resolute of "cowardly and criminal" behaviour, "since it did not attend to the rescue of the crew".

It said all the crew of the Naiguata had been rescued, but did not give details.

Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino López accused the Resolute of ramming the vessel, "which caused its sinking".

President Maduro said an investigation had been launched and he expected "maximum collaboration" from authorities in Curaçao.

There’s your sign ! Lol too funny Dutch
The BVL Naiguata cost about $25 million when it was put into service 9 years ago. Betting her Captain never makes Admiral.

Wonder if the Captain of the cruise ship will order a silhouette of a ship sinking painted on her superstructure to claim the kill?

They'd never make it. Germany was a land power but had a big problem projecting staying power over water. That's why they never invaded the UK over the English Channel.
