Watching it now. The classic, from 1960.

Who was the coolest in the movie? Not in life - NOBODY beats McQueen. NOBODY.

Coburn for me - in the flick. Calm n collected.

You couldn't come close to rounding up a cast like that nowadays.

Great movie! I cannot bring myself to watch the new version.
Still have zero desire to watch the remake. Fugg that.

On film, always thought McQueen weird, maybe off film as well.

Not in the 7, but Lee Marvin always gets my attention. Jmfo.

Charles Bronson - Always a solid actor and the movie has quite possibly the best matched main theme song ever done.

McQueen was the coolest in the movie.

We just watched both, the older version is a lot better.

It was a great movie but it lost 2 points when I discovered that the entire plot was taken from a Japanese movie called 'The Seven Samurai'.

One of the coolest westerns ever. Thanks for reminding me about it. Even though I'm retired I spend a LOT more time at home these days for obvious reasons. Got that movie on DVD almost 10 years ago and I still haven't even put it in the DVD player yet. I'll watch it this week. And speaking of McQueen, who was ultra cool in that movie; I also have a DVD of "Bullit" here that I haven't seen in years. Another McQueen classic.

You do realize the 1960 movie is also a remake?

Hollywood, heck the globe film industry, has made its money its entire history by telling and retelling stories from books, the bible, other movies, the headlines..... Very little original, just remakes of other things. It doesn't diminish a well told tale with a new twist in my opinion.

Yep but we're talking about the magnificent seven not seven samurai.

Eli Wallach as Calvera, he played a Mexican bandit better than a Mexican bandit could play a Mexican bandit cool
Watching Moby Dick right now. The original...again.

When you watch "Bullit", keep track of how many times that VW appears in the chase seen through the city.

Was pretty good in Wall Street 2 - almost unrecognizable.

1851 - Melville writes Moby Dick

1852 - Still no reply from Moby Dick, Melville greatly disappointed

In his day Steve McQueen was the epitome of cool. Cancer took him way too soon.
Coburn was always solid.

I always thought that Brad Dexter (Harry), was the most fun to watch. Not for a second did he ever believe that they were not going to come into huge stores of gold, no matter that Chris (Brynner) told him time after time there was no gold. Then as Dexter is shot and dying, he gets that knowing grin on his face and asks Chris, "How much gold, Chris?" And Chris answers his old friend, "Tons of it, Harry. Tons of it."

And Harry gets that satisfied smile on his face, knowing that he has died for what he knew all along, "Tons of gold." A worthwhile death.

Magnificent Seven is in my top five favorite westerns. Seen it many, many times. Never gets old.
Timeless soundtrack too!

Yul Brynner had the baddest movie walk ever.
Coburn was the coolest though.
Robert Vaughn didn't fit, even if he played a coward.
Lee Van Cleef would have rounded out the cast perfectly.

I still want to drive that 16 speed Mustang from Bullitt. He was always shifting.

I liked Bronson in Chato's Land. It's a great western.

I agree it would be very difficult to arrange for such a great cast of characters for a movie today.

However there's one player that many people forget about. That's Eli Wallach. He played Calvera and created a character that was easy to hate.

Indeed, that's the movie that made Toshiro Mifune famous. First saw it as a teenager sitting in my cousin's house on a Saturday night, getting drunk as usual, we were blown away. The thing is, back then the actors actually had genuine skills, the horse back archers being especially impressive.

I will say the grainy imagery and Japanese music take some getting used to.

But yep, entire lines of dialog were grafted over to the Magnificent Seven.

I think I’ll watch the 7 Samurai this week. I’m aware of it, but never saw it.

IF anyone else is bored (I was this past weekend), and into Westerns (specifically Sergio Leone), look on YouTube, for the “danish symphony orchestra Sergio Leone”. They do a GREAT job of doing the themes from many of his spaghetti westerns. IMHO, Ennio Morricone is a genius!

Well, that got me started on watching:

Once Upon A Time in The West
(Side note: I would do just about anything to spend a few days with a 25yo Claudia Cardinale)

The Good The Bad and The Ugly
Fistful of Dollars
and
For A Few Dollars More

This week, I plan on watching:
Pale Rider
The Outlaw Josey Wales (a personal favorite)
High Plains Drifter

The Magnificent 7 is a great film!
Other personal favorites are:
The Dirty Dozen
Papillon
A Bridge Too Far

Just some suggestions for this “covid hibernation mode”

McQueen was definitely the highest paid movie star at that time.
