I was on the other side of the state today and had to stop for gas. The gas station had a small liquor display. I thought I had seen folks here mention Makers Mark, so I grabbed a fifth for my Son in Law. Did I insult him?
I would not know, anything over 15% ETOH all tastes like isopropyl to me
Not my fave but I likes it...Now had you bought him Kesslers.
It's OK if Jack Daniel's isn't available. Gentleman Jack is good, but Single Barrel is a cut above GJ.

Makers mark is decent... middle of the road. Nobody should be insulted by it for sure
If your SIL isn't happy with some ***FREE*** Makers Mark.......
Should be fine!
I would not know, anything over 15% ETOH all tastes like isopropyl to me
Same here. Have some MM here, tastes like schit
Thanks.
Kessler's? I will try to remember that.
Hey this is as good a place to ask as any. One of my cousins had a bottle of Scotch. I think the glass was green but not positive.
I know the bottle was kept in a green paper cylinder.
Any good guesses as to what it was? Even I could sip on that stuff.
"Glenlivet 12" Scotch comes in a green bottle- - - - -aged 12 years, I believe. Good stuff, if you like booze that tastes a little bit like smoked pork barbecue. Actually, that's the "youngest" scotch that Glenlivet sells- - - - -some of their higher quality stuff is aged much longer, and is priced accordingly.

Tough crowd tonight.
Good stuff, nice gift.
Never cared for it as a mixer but liked it straight with a chaser or straight over ice.
Makers is an absolutely appropriate gift. Ignore folks telling what to get. They’re spending your money lol. If he doesn’t like it that’s fine, but it’s not an el cheapo like Old Crow lol
I dont drink much of anything stronger than 10-11%. I have a bottle of Makers Mark Cask Strength on the counter. Even i can drink it neat. Mix it and I'm in trouble fast.
I think i'm going to try Glenlivet or Highland Park Scotch next.
It's a gift, nothing wrong with it. It'll mix.
It will get you drunk. Isn’t that the point?
Nuttin' wrong with Maker's Mark.
It’s not bad, I prefer Jack
It’s not bad, I prefer Jack
And how do you drink it?
While the Bride and I were in Rome last Fall I had gotten tired of Italian beer and red wine. We had eaten, always a treat went up to the rooftop bar to watch the sunset. I noticed there was a bottle of Maker's Mark, held up three fingers, a worthwhile sample, rejoined my Bride. Not bad! Of course, it may have been the environment, all the history, and culture.
For awhile that’s the bourbon I asked for in my standard manhattans. Not bad at all. There’s better, there’s FAR worse. Certainly not an insult to gift someone a bottle. I’d be happy to get one. Unless someone really has their nose way up in the air. If all bourbons were split into tiers of quality by thirds, I’d put MM somewhere around the bottom of the top third, maybe even higher. Like a B+ or A-.
No insult at all. Makers is always a solid choice.
I can't imagine being persnickety about which bourbon goes into a mixed drink, Why waste a good bourbon? There is a major difference when drinking it straight.
Makers Mark is a solid choice for a gift.
Makers Mark is a solid choice for a gift.
Yep.
Not big and bold so as to overwhelm a newbie to sipping whiskey.
Not meek and mild so as to be uninteresting to an experienced palate.
Not too rare/expensive so as to make the giver cry tears of regret when the recipient does something stupid like mixing it with cola.
When I was a drinking man that is what I drank. I liked the taste and it got me to where I wanted to go.
Tough crowd tonight.
Good stuff, nice gift.
man, amen!
it's my favorite sipping bourbon over ice. I wouldn't waste it in a mixed drink, as its already plenty smooth and a bit pricey.
I wouldn't waste it over ice either.
Thanks.
Kessler's? I will try to remember that.
.
Best to forget THAT.
Not my favourite, but not bad either;
SIL should be happy with your gesture alone !
I wouldn't waste it over ice either.
Makers Mark is as good as most IMO. I certainly wouldn't pour it down the drain!
My girlfriend and I drove up to the distillery just last year. We live in North Carolina, it is just a 450 mile trip.
Shirley bought a fifth of the Makers Mark, and she went to the station where she dipped her fifth in the distinctive red wax.
Meanwhile, I went down to the "Guest Bar Room." Did you know they give away free shots of this high quality Kentucky bourbon.
I swear, I just had a little nip.
Makers Mark is a solid choice for a gift.

Nailed it!
It’s OK, I used to drink it at times. It always tended to slip up on me when I stood up.
Makers Mark is a good bourbon in my opinion, I would certainly not be insulted if someone gifted me a bottle of the stuff.
It’s all the same, taste like a rubbing alcohol with a cigarette butt in it.

I'm sure you didn't insult him, but to answer your question in a word, "no". MM is far inferior to much cheaper stuff and much of the stuff that's the same price.

Well said. I will second that.
It's not my first choice but I would be happy getting it as a gift. Have no fear. He'll put it to use
I like Makers and think highly of anything they make. I don't think its an insult at all. Its a step above Jack Daniels or Jim Beam in my mind.
Not a whiskey guy, but in the last year I've tried Blantons, Jack, and just recently Makers 46. The Makers was my least favorite, Blantons probably the best.
i would think most people would be glad if someone bought them a bottle of whatever, and wouldn't be pizzin in the givers cup that it didn't meet their "sniff sniff" quality standards.
i use to like bourbon, 30 years or so ago, don't drink now. but i have probably half dozen varieties in the bar.
