WHAT YA GOT AND HOW YA LIKE IT ?
Take a look at Lowes Kobalt 80v line. Like Milwaukee, the batteries can be used in any of their other 80v tools. They come with a fast charger. I have a Kobalt chainsaw. Some, like the Dewalt chainsaw, can take an hour to charge while the Kobalt will charge in 30 min. The battery might not last quite as long but with the fast charger, you get more work time out of it because you have less down time waiting for it to charge.
How much are the batteries and how long till you have to buy a new one. Prime considerations.
I’ve had a Dewalt two years. I trim 20 minutes or so once a week in summer. Works great, but re stringing is difficult until you figure it out. Still using original battery.
Never going back to a gas trimmer.
Dewalt 20V Max Brushless and I do like it. I got a bigass 9AH battery so it's not a concern. Just grab it and go. As I have decided to go Dewalt on my cordless tools, it was the way....
Gly-4
Bought a Worx 20V combination of a string trimmer and leaf blower 4-5 years ago, as I recall for around $120. Both are still working great, including the two identical batteries. (We do quite a bit of trimming, but not nearly as much leaf-blowing.)
I have a gas stihl pro that never starts in the spring. Works great when it runs... but... WHEN I DO trim, it takes like 4 or5 hours and is in for some heavy cutting. I figure a 40 amp maybe even to light so am probably looking at the 80 amp stuff. Any love for the sears/Ryobi stuff ?
I have the Kobalt 80v from Lowes. Just bought it six weeks ago. Love it.
Hope the battery holds up for years.
However, I have a DeWalt 14 volt cordless drill that they quit making 12 years ago. I have a 12 year old battery for that drill that I have recharged hundreds of times and it still works great. So I think I will get a good result with the Kobalt battery. Because, I hear these batteries are expensive.

Also have the Kobalt 80v lawn mower. Love it.

It is great to run these lawn machines that run quietly. No need for earplugs.
Anyone have the the Makita trimmer?

THis!!!! I have Kobalt 80v chainsaw and it is 👍. I want a Kobalt 80v polesaw!!!

I also have the Dewalt trimmer. Its the big one. 60 or 80v (don’t remember). And I also like it. Battery last long enough to wear me out. When it’s charged back up So am I. Ready to continue.
I switched from Dewalt cordless tools to Ryobi mainly because the Dewalt batteries didnt last very long and were very expensive. Bought a Ryobi impact driver and liked it so I bought another. Now have a bunch of Ryobi cordless tools including a 40 volt chainsaw and a 40 volt weedeater. Both have been way better than messing with two cycle engines and having them not start when you need them. I haven't replaced the string on the trimmer yet. Hope it is not too much of a learning curve.
We use the DeWalt line of battery-operated tools and have very good luck so far. Durable and well-designed with good quality batteries. For 60V tools, we use the trimmer, blower, hedge-trimmer and circular-saw. All have served us well and we would go that route again if buying today.....
Aren't all those things made in.....................................China?

Be that as it may, I have two 20v Black and Decker trimmers. We have two because I lived in another state from my wife for 8 months a year for awhile. For suburban yards it works well enough for trimming around the lawns and such. One of them still sees some use on my 7Acre RANCH, especially if the wife wants to trims some foxtail before the seed heads dry.

Me, I have a gas trimmer for doing the real work, like "mowing" the 30'-40' firebreak around the place. If that dies, I may have to look into one of those 80V jobbers though. I've been using 40V lawnmowers for years and hope never to go back to gas.
"Both have been way better than messing with two cycle engines and having them not start when you need them."

Regardless what you go with, this is the bottom line right here!!!

Being cheap frugal, I have the least expensive model.
I bought one (Echo, I think). Returned it that afternoon for a gas model.

If your doing a couple flower beds and a small drive way, the one I had would probably be great. I needed more and it didn’t deliver.
Not sure about strong trimmers.

Got my eye on the Milwaukee fuel pole saw.....

That may be the ticket for limbing trails.

I love you, Jim! As if you were my own fadda!
EGO, 4 year warrenty on batteries, Does everything I need it to do, 3.5 acres.

I also have no intention of going back to gas.

They have batteries
I have a ryobi 40V string trimmer, lawn mower and leaf blower. They are all excellent with long battery life.

I was prepared to be disappointed with the first acquisition, the mower, but loved it. I bought it cheap on fleebay.
The other purchases followed (the blower was free with purchase of the string trimmer) and kept up my high opinion of the product line.

The JD 345 will remain, as will the stihl and Husky saws...until they make one outta electron juice that's worth a chit.
Another 20V DeWalt here. I already have DeWalt cordless tools so I was able to buy the bare tool pretty cheap. I've got 2 6-Amp HR, 6 4-Amp HR, and 2 2-Amp Hr batteries strewn about my house, shop, pickup, and camper. Even the 2 Amp HR batteries have enough for the 10Min of trimming @ the camper/lake place.

I've also purchased a bunch of the adaptors for 18V to 20V as it was way cheaper than buying new tools. Only thing to know about the adaptors is you can't leave the 18V tools plugged into the 20V batteries on the tool or just the adaptor when not in use, they'll discharge.
I have the DeWalt 40 amp and think its great. Don't lose a battery though, they are expensive to replace.
Ive got a Dewalt 20v trimmer...The wife loves using it also so thats a HUGE plus. It works great and battery last a decent time. I use it for the fenced in part of our yard and around the house.

For outside of the yard and around the pasture and wooded areas I use a Stihl gasoline trimmer for the bigger/tougher jobs.
I bought the Milwaukee string trimmer, pole saw combo. got the hedge trimmer attachment as well. Works like a charm with over an hour in battery life. All my other battery tools are Milwaukee M18, so I can use them while the 12ah battery charges.

Yes, same here,
Serious bonus points awarded.
I will add that the Kobalt trimmer has just as much power as my old Echo gas model.

If you limit yourself to American made at this time, you'll be using Grandpa's old hand saw and a scythe. Hopefully the last few months will bring a lot of this manufacturing back to the states but it will take years. You don't retool a factory and train new people overnight.
ROCKCHUCK IS RIGHT ! NOTHING is made in America.... except Americans and they seem to be getting harder to find.

I’m looking for something for my wife.
Anybody have a Makita? all my cordless tools are Makita so I'd stick with them, great battery life thus far.
My neighbor has a huge yard. He got a Makita string trimmer and he loves it. Also the batteries fit his Makita chain saw.
I've had a Greenworks 80V for a couple of years. It's been excellent. I've never missed the 2-cycle weed trimmer.
Bought one of the cheap Wal Mart trimmers. 20v I think. Works great for trimming around he house and shed were I weed eat every week usually get it all done on one charge. Now the other stuff that I trim usually every two weeks I need the gas weedeater but Im sure one of the big cordless ones would work as well. I will purchase a bigger and better cordless one in the future. It is so nice not having to mess with the gas and starting the damn things plus you end up smelling like gas by the time you are done. Cordless is the way to go unless you are cutting a big area or thick stuff.

Greenworks is 1 of the highest rated brands, with a great warranty....I'm looking at 1 of their pole hedge trimmers now, extra batteries are expensive.
With any of the modern battery operated tools, a new battery will usually cost more than 1/2 the price of the tool new. If you need to get 2 new batteries for something, you might as well get a whole new tool as you will spend almost that much and still have an old tool.
Another timely thread since I’ve been shopping for a cordless weedeater. I almost bought a Greenworks 60v combo blower and weedeater but decided to do more research before going off half cocked. I’ve got almost all of the Dewalt cordless tools and figured I’d stay with Dewalt if they were halfway decent. Every brand seems to have their Home Depot models and then they have their better line with higher amp/hr batteries. I’ve been very happy with the new cordless Dewalt stuff and I got the adapter that allows me to use my older 18V Dewalt tools with the newer 20V+ lithium ion batteries so that gives me the chance to use my older tools as backups too. I’m sick of 2 stroke weedeaters and their finicky ways after sitting through the winter. I’ve gotten 5+ years out of my Husqvarna weedeater and it’s still running fine but I know that it’ll give up when I’m most in need of it. I might as well replace everything with cordless. I still have my Milwaukee corded tools and don’t plan on getting rid of them.....ever, but being able to grab a tool and go is a nice change from running cords and mixing gas, especially simple jobs that don’t require the power of corded tools. The modern cordless tools have an amazing amount of power, torque and battery life.

Thanks for the info guys. 👍
All right. It is afternoon, 73 degrees and sunny, I am going to fire up the Kobalt 80v and do some weed eating. It is actually fun to use this machine.

I'm not looking for American made so much as looking for schitt that NOT made in China. I have a Milwaukee 1/2" drive cordless impact that I just love but I bought it before the whole China flu hit. Sadly it will be my one and only MIlwaukee purchase. Going forward, no made in China for me.
A couple of things to keep in mind about battery-powered trimmers:

1) As long as the battery is charged, they will start.

2) They will not drip all over when in storage.

(3) the wife and kids can no longer claim they can't get the weedeater started.
EGO and it is fricking great. Plenty of power. I also have a blower that is fantastic so that gives me two batteries. Never run out of juice. The best thing about the EGO trimmer is the Powerload head. You can load the string in seconds and it really works.

I don’t like buying from online only “stores” but will if given no other choice. Did you get your EGO online or at a store? Where’d you get yours, if you don’t mind me asking?

Since I have all Dewalt cordless I’d like to stay with Dewalt but if there was a big difference in quality and performance then I’ll bite the bullet and go with a different brand.

Thanks for all the insight guys. 👍

Home Depot but you will have to wear a mask and stand in line to enter. Or do an online, curbside pickup.
My EGO was just delivered today. Love it. My lot is only 1/2 acre so no problem so no battery problem. My mower is also a EGO. Bought a couple of spare batteries on ebay for $60 apiece that fit both units. The trimmer batteries are a little smaller the the mower battery but they all interchange.
We got a Ryobi at home depot.

The wife loves it,she picked it out.

The batteries are the same for the trimming saw i had.

The only thing i found lacking was the original battery did not last.

I since have bought a larger battery and it lasts the whole 10 acres trimming around 2 houses,1 metal building and 21 Pecan trees as well as around other trees.

Yep exactly my thought. If I was going cordless it would be Milwaukee Fuel M18. The impact wrenches are stout. It’s crazy what all they have in the M18 FUEL lineup.

we have one. already had 18V impact, skillsaw and cordless drill, so I intentionally bought the 18v/36v Makita so I could share batteries. I'm glad we bought it, but I think it ONLY makes sense if you already have the other tools and can share batteries.

the spool head doesnt hold that much string (maybe 2 strands appx 9' long, max?)

runs about 15 minutes of continuous duty on a pair of batteries, (says my wife who does the weed eating....)

I got a DeWalt 20V....... I love it... So far .... Only a year old but it's a joy. I run the 5 amp hr. batteries and I never trimmed enough in one day to run it dead. Got a DeWalt 20V hand held spotlight also that gets occasional use. Got three batteries so I can have one on each and one on the charger. Looking to get some other DeWalt 20V stuff. The batteries are expensive but I don't feel as if it's a ripoff considering how well the 5 amp hr. ones work.
I gave up on them a couple of years ago. Tired of bad battery's and short trim time. Bought a Echo gas trimmer. I would look at higher voltage and Lithium Ion batteries. Also look at how the string is loaded. It can be a real PIA depending.
I bought an 80v Kobalt straight shaft trimmer from Lowes last summer after I used my old Homelite gas Xpand-it trimmer as a poleaxe (quite rewarding after all the trouble it gave me). The 80v has WAY more power than my old gas one.
Over the winter I passed a random garage sale in another city and stopped in. Thye were welling a NIB Kobalt 80v trimmer, the other version that allows for Xpand-it attachments. Price was cheaper than just a battery so I snatched it up. Now I have one that use just for trimming and the other I use as an edger and chainsaw pole attachment (both from Ryobi). The edger has never worked so well, the extra power is awesome.

My weedeater hat. I used 1/8 inch hardware cloth and pop riveted it to a baseball hat. Ran electrician's tape around the edge.
It is lightweight. Very good at keeping sticks out of your eyes.

+1. I gave my brother my old Stihl trimmer. This thing is freaking great.

Pizz on string trimmers of all stripes.
Roundup + 2,4-D 20gal tank in the old Kawasaki Mule. Boom and wand. Deep cycle battery to run the pump. Drink beer and kill grass at same time.
Does anyone make a battery powered string trimmer that can rotate the head and be an edger?

Safety glasses fog up. Whatever floats your boat.
I have a shindaiwa that I have owned for 15 years. It’s a pretty big weed trimmer as I got it when I lived on farm. I do routine maintenance every year, and don’t store it with fuel in it at end of year. It has never not started.

Last year I got a kobalt for my wife to use as she doesn’t like lugging around the heavy Shindaiwa. It was pretty weak strength wise honestly. Took it back. Need to re-evaluate what’s available this year

My opinion is for a small yard with little trimming go electric. Otherwise stay gas or use chemicals
Was your wife's Kobalt electric? If so I bet it wasn't the expensive one, the 80v. Because I have been using that Bad Boy for 7 weeks and it has as much power as the gas powered weedeater.
I really like the 80v Kobalt trimmer ...and I can use the EZ attachments like the tree pruner and hedge trimmer from my old Troy-Bilt gas trimmer on it.
On top of that, I get about an hour of use with the Kobalt 80v. Which will do my entire yard. However, I also have a shiny new Kobalt lawnmower and the batteries are interchangable and that lawnmower battery is bigger than the weed eater battery. Swapping these two batteries out with the weedeater you could work all day and never run out of battery.
I have Echo products, goes back to the chainsaw I bought from Echo back in the late 70's,
I needed a new chainsaw a few years go because my old 1970's Echo still worked but it took forever to get it started after letting it sit a few years.
Went out and bought an battery powered Echo Chainsaw, the thing is amazing, had two large trees fall across the access to our hunting land, trees were bout 20" across and had multiple trunks, took us a couple of hours of cutting to clear them up and the saw just chewed them into dust, battery never failed either.
I was so impressed I bought an Echo leaf blower, interchangeable batteries and has more power than my electric Toro Blower, then I bought the Echo string trimmer, again same battery and it just works great, easy string reloading and string adjustments,
I can't say enough about these, they have worked great for my needs.
