Where is Baldwin located
Posted By: gunswizard Re: Jeweling bolt? - 09/10/22
Here's his contact info:

Baldwin Bolt Jeweling
P.O. Box 237
Vassar, MI 48768
[email protected]

I have used Skip several times, always delivered quality work, fairly priced and quick turnaround. I recommend him highly.

He isn't far from me then. Good. Thanks guys I will email him

I'm going to see how many I got that could go. Do they redo some that have warned down some? The prices are good for what it involves.

Jeweling looks so cool when it’s done nicely

DANNYL,

Yes, Skip can redo the pattern already on your bolt or he can change it altogether and do something different.

The quality of his work is much better than what comes on a factory bolt.

I worried about that myself the first time I used Baldwin…so much so that I mailed the bolts separately cause I figured chances would be better that at least they all wouldn’t get lost in the mail.
Then, Skip mailed them all back together in one box.😳😬
I felt kinda foolish after that.😁

I’ve sent him a total of 6 bolts to date(USPS Priority). Use the small, flat rate box and wrap each bolt in bubble wrap and then reinforce the box by wrapping it entirely in packing tape.

Nothing risked, nothing gained.😁

Thanks Lefty. Many times if they see it's insured the package seems to get where it's going. With flat rate they come with $50 and when it's more it catches their eye.

Per the guys price list if it has not gone up.
75 buck total to include shipping to and from.
I'm seriously considering have him do my 98 bolt like this.
Pretty damm good deal.
Dont need a forged handle.

Jeweling
Blueing extractor, handle, and ring.

A number of my rifles are hard, if not impossible, to replace. I have lost what little faith I had in the various shippers over the past few years.

Been wanting to get a bolt jeweled on my old 700 BDL that I bough new around 1974. I would lose sleep until I had it back in my hands so I keep putting it off. Maybe send it registered mail or next day delivery.
Posted By: luv2safari Re: Jeweling bolt? - 09/20/22
It sure adds Class to a nice rifle, IMO..As a kid I tried it with a pencil eraser still in the pencil stub, chucked into my electric drill. I had a then cheap Spanish Mauser and did that bolt. It actually came out pretty nice to everyone's surprise.

The above photos in the thread make me want to have a rifle done. It's some beautiful work.

Stan Ware taught me to use a 1/4" Cratex rod (blue). I do them in the mill vise with a 1/4" R8 collet to hold the Cratex rod (wrapped with tape). The Cratex part number is Q046 XF. The 'XF' denoting extra fine.

If you have a drill press, you can make a couple of wooden v-blocks to hold the bolt in place and advance it manually. A stop for limiting the down travel is nice but the Cratex is pretty forgiving, provided you don't lean on it too hard. Just let it do the work. Lightly...... wink

Ship it with UPS insured for $1000. They maintain a chain of custody and it's extremely rare when they lose it.

The chain of custody is automatic when insured value is 1000.00 and above? What does that insurance value cost?

$10-$15 more for that amount of insurance.

Hello all, Have any of you had problems with Mr. Baldwin?
I sent a Bolt back in April 2023 and after he said he received it i have had no word and he does not answer my emails.
I fear my bolt is gone along with the $160. i sent with it.
After doing some research i have found out he does not do most of the work, he farms it out to other craftsmen.
If i had known that up front i would not have enlisted his services.

Dave,

That is news to me.

Skip did all of my bolts personally and had them back to me pronto.

Sorry to hear of your plight….hope it gets resolved satisfactorily and you get your bolt back soon.

OP, your bolt looks very good. I once had a "custom jeweled" bolt. Looked like bloody hell. Never again.

I will often have the extractor nitre blued. They come out looking bluish or purplish in hue and quite nice.

I hope so also. I have looked online for e replacement just in case i have to get another bolt. $$$

I bought a Ruger #1 from a guy on another forum in March. A NIB rifle in a fairly rare caliber. The seller sent tracking info and we watched and watched. I advised I was patient and we agreed to wait a bit longer. After three weeks tracking still showed it at his post office. It wasn't. He decided to send me a refund and pursue the claim process. His first attempt was rejected. He provided more info (like a copy of my cashed check). They said they needed more time. He waited, contacted, waited... Three weeks ago the rifle landed at my FFL. Tracking showed it as non-delivered. I sent the seller another check. My faith in the USPS was lost.
