My Brother recently bought a new Colt SAA in 45 Colt. When he brought to me to look at I noticed that the color case hardening colors were terrible. He cant see well up close and the Colt was pretty oily. Anyway a trip back for warranty work transformed into a trip for upgrades. First I convinced him to get another cylinder in 45 acp fitted. Then he wanted the blue to look more like a pair of consecutive serial numbered SAA's he has that are royal blued then he decided to have the base "A" grade engraving done and the Royal Blue changed to Charcoal Blue done by Turnbull.

The finished pistol does not disappoint. I wish I had better pics.

Nice. In my experience Doug does not disappoint.

That’s about too purdy to shoot.

Congrats.

How’s it shoot?

That extra cylinder is going to come in very handy. I wish I had one for my Colt SAA. I do have an extra .45 ACP cylinder for my Uberti Cattleman, and it gets used quite a lot. Cheaper and more available than .45 Colt.

The Colt is really nice.

Can you hear it? I just about can from here. Think it's begging for some ivory.

That would complete it for me. YMMV.

When I was cowboy action shooting, I picked up a pair of engraved 3rd Gen .38 Spec. Pard in Dallas bought them, got a retired Weatherby engraver in Texas to do a Colt pattern.

I sent them to Nutmeg Sports for dead ele grips. I had a set of one piece rosewood grips on a 3rd Gen set of 357’s that I had shaped to suit. I sent one of those grips for them to duplicate the shape, which they did.

I’m away from my computer. Will post photos when I’m back at home.

were you able to do the ivory in one piece? It may be much more difficult to take the pistol down but one piece grips look better to my eye.

Beautiful Colt SAA. If that were mine I know I wouldn't turn the cylinder on it.

Agreed. I much prefer one piece. Not that difficult to remove, though. Just unscrew the grip frame (three screws). Just make sure you have a perfectly fitting screwdriver.

Yes, one piece.

And I don’t take them down very much.

Gen 3 Colt case colors are not as pronounced as Doug's, are more subtle with almost an iridescent look.

Nutmeg fitted the one piece ivories and used the deep dish Colt Medallion.

Last is the Colt rosewood grips I carved and had Errol Case in MO checker. Those fit my hand, and I wanted these to be similar, sent one along with the Grip frames of the engraved .38's. Nutmeg did a good job repeating the shape. The rosewood ones also have the deep dish medallion.

Thanks.

IIRC one piece ivory was about $500 each. But that was several years ago.

Seems I paid around $3K for the pair, used of course.

Ya reckon I could recoup my investment in current Brandon administration dollars?

Thanks, they are special and I'm fortunate to have them.

I did shoot them in CAS and they did get some attention.

I'd love to own that SAA, always wanted an engraved SAA in blue and case colored frame.
I had Nutmeg do two Colts for me, I had a new SAA engraved and nickeled w/ one piece Ivory grips,
the other was a new GCNM engraved and reblued in a deep royal blue again with Ivory grips.
I have a really nice SAA with dual cylinders 45 & 45ACP that I might have to get engraved after seeing yours.

Some really nice colt’s here, but, the one piece ivory grips on Dirtfarmers’s and jbmi’s Colts really are something. Hawkeye’s one piece stags are pretty spiffy too.
