Just wondering if you guys are paying 24.99 for a box of 50 of these calibers? I got my 17 and 22 mag about 4 years ago, my prices here in SoCal were 9.99 to 12.99 a box. Now I know those days are probably gone for good but 24.99? That is crazy. I don't mind spending 14 bucks a box or maybe 15 bucks a box on these calibers because I think they are fun. I am thinking for 24.99 a box I will just shoot up the 600 or so I have of each caliber over the next couple winters and sell the rifles or put them in the back of the safe. I have plenty of loading components for my bolt action 223's and 17 Hornet. What do you guys think?
Been seeing Hornady 17hmr for 17 bucks a box at academy, think its 20 at bps. Had been seeing 22 mag at about 15 a box but I swore it was 25 at bps last week.

CCI has both on their site right now to buy, 18 and 20 a box.

My buddy said one of our local stores had 1 box of 17HMR for 19.99 the other day. Still kinda crazy to me.
I passed on last years trip west to shoot prairie dogs for a few reasons. But the scarcity of powder to load the centerfires, & the price of 17's were a couple of them.

$25 a box for 17's wouldn't break me, but the line has to be drawn somewhere & I drew it. Not even gonna pay $20 a box, & will have to think it's not going below 15 ever again, to pay that.

I don’t have a too much HMR ammo and located some for $15/50. Tempted to buy a brick or two

Its stupid to pay that much for 17HMR ammo. I still see it for much less than that locally, but you have to be quick when you buy it. Prices will go back down, you just have to wait it out and shoot something else for the time being.. That's what I think...
If I had a .17HMR (and I kinda wish I did) I would buy one, maybe two, boxes of ammo, sight it in with a few shots, and put the gun and the rest of the ammo away for a rainy day.

It's easy for me to say that I'll make up the difference by shooting my 8 or 10 .22 CF's with cast bullet loads. (I have literally a ton of lead, and a half dozen .22 caliber moulds, and enough powder stockpiled to last until the second coming.) But, like everybody else, I'm a slave to the awful primer situation - all that lead and powder is worthless without primers. My stash of sp, sr, lp, and lr primers is sufficient for a couple years of shooting at my current rate but that's not a comfy position if this "shortage" keeps going in perpetuity.

I guess the bulk of primer production is going into ammo production not handloader supply store shelves. Gotta have tons of 9mm, 10mm, and .223's for the magazine-dumping spray-and-pray crowds, dontcha know.
Local Walmart has CCI 22WMR 40gr JHP Maxi-Mag for $14.73 per 50 rd box along with many boxes of 22LR (didn't notice the price on those). I predict that as production AND distribution catches up the prices will drop back to 'normal' but the 'new normal' will be higher than the dirt cheap prices of 3-4 years ago.
I buy it daily, with a smile on my face,if only because I never learned to fhuqking linger(just set some on a shelf minutes ago, from Today's purchase). Hint.

If only in fairness however,I'm not slumming it in some Salvage Goat Fhuqk Piece Of Schit Rifle. Mainstays are a Anschutz 1717D HB and Franklin Krunchenticker. Hint.

These ARE The Good Old Days. Hint.....................
My 17M2 and 17HMR ammo is gathering dust when we moved from ground squirrel country to prairie dog country.
Now the 223 is king.........I was already mostly shooting ground squirrels with the 223 in the old days....unless the shooting got to be over 100 shots/hour, then switch to rimfire.
Thanks for the replies.
Bought 3 boxes of 22wmr for my single six. They were cci soft points. @ $17 a box I doubt I'll be buying more
If you think that’s bad, try buying some 5.7x28. Bought a Ruger 5.7, thinking it’d be something. Next thing I know, it’s $50 per 50. All for essentially a “glorified 22 mag”.

Like you say, with 223 still at $12 per 20, and 9mm at $19 per 50 (not “great” prices, but not STUPID), it’s hard to justify. I can still get Fed automatch 22 for $21 per 325....

You want some REAL fun, try finding any FACTORY 22-250, these days..
The 5.7 X 28 is more than a" glorified .22 mag".

It is a .22 Hornet RIMLESS.
The 5.7 is hardly a fhuqking Hornet,as there is nearly 25% difference in case capacity and I "just happen" to shoot both(along with KHorn's). Not that I don't enjoy the Dumbfhuqktitude of you gals doing your best. Hint.

Have a Vudoo 17 Hummer enroute, which should arrive early in the week. I'll go buy some more ammo and check Mail, here in a bit. Hint................
Just bought 3 boxes of Federal 22 mag 50 gr HPs for $14.59/box of 50 at the local farm store. They are my second most favored coyote load in the 22 mag and what I carry in the Single Six when out and about. They had 17 HMR at $17.99/ box but I still have plenty of that on the shelf.
14.99 is doable. I reload everything with the exception of 22WMR and 17HMR (obviously). We plink with a lot of different stuff so a few boxes now and then of the rimfires isn't too big of a deal at 14 or 15 bucks a box.............but 24.99 is idiotic.
seems like there are a lot of guys here that will use cost as an excuse not to shoot......
My problem is every time I buy 17hmr ammo

I find stuff to shoot it with or at!!

Around here been kinda scarce. But when I find it under 20$ I buy multiple boxes. Over that it depends on how much I have on hand!

Cost & cost effective two different things?? Not an excuse to not shoot, a logical reason to shoot something better for less cost.

Probably because there are a lot of guys who can't afford to whether they want to or not. With inflation spiraling upward, if a guy's wages aren't keeping pace he'll cut out recreational stuff first. As a single guy living a simple existence, I can devote as much personal treasure to the sport as I feel like. I shudder to think if I had a wife, kids, house payment, car payment, etc. how much I would have for shooting sports.

Of course, if it's just an excuse, well, yeah.
What is better than a 17 hmr at less cost? don't forget to figure in reloading time......
natchezss has 17 hmr for 17.50 and 22 mag for 18.99. As stated above we will never see the prices of a couple years ago sure glad i stocked up then
same with reloading components.......
Always loaded on my free time, the same time as watching TV, reading the paper or surfing the net. Hard to put a price on that.
The 17 is a good one, I just don't have to pay the current price at this time.

The old prices aren't likely to come back due to inflation if nothing else,,, but had to eat the words I spoke during Obama. I said the same thing, "we'll never see $5 a box shot shells or $20 a brick 22's again". But we did.

Seems like there is one person who lacks 5th grade reading comprehension skills. Cost and effect are two different things. 50 cents a round for a cartridge that spits out a 17grn pill at 2550 and shoots 1 1/4 inches at 100 yards. When I can load 17 hornet WHILE I AM AT WORK for 5.50 a box of 25 in 30 minutes? Or reduced 40grn 223 for 7 bucks per 20?

Nah. Just, as mentioned, use it as an excuse to shoot SOMETHING ELSE.

I can have just as much fun shooting my 9mm’s, at 40 cents a shot, as the 5.7, which is now gonna run 80 cents to a dollar a shot. The 5.7 is fun, but not $20 per “mag dump” fun. Time to bust out the SDS Lynx, and burn through some dove loads.
great choices for skweeks past 100 yards. sometimes 'something else', don't make sense, except to cheapskates.
I dig that The Brokedick Faction is ammo pissed and "extolling" schit rifles to boot. Hint. Fhuqking LAUGHING!

My Anschutz 1717D HB will reliably shoot .5MOA clusters at 100yds,even with me yanking the trigger. I've a Clark Custom 77 17 Hummer and it fhuqking pales. As do my Franklin. Hint.

I'm hoping my Vudoo Hummer arrives by Tuesday,if only for extrapolation. Hint...................
Wow! .5 moa @ 100 with an Anschutz. I thought all 17's shot like that. What I get for thinking, right? Right grin

Thought my pawn shop Salvage was just average, but I might have to extoll it more. It serves a flier out of 5 to give .5moa. If I cared to source the flier, the other 4 are at .35MOA.

Please report on Vudoo if it suits you.
Pardon reality. Hint.

Yep
I can't remember if it was 2017 or 2018 my LGS had a big sale on Federal 17HMR ammo......it was $8 a box but a limit of 20 boxes. my friend that went with me laughed at me for spending $160

Went back the next day to spend another $160 but it was all long gone
That price is guaranteed to never come back
I don't own a 17HMR, but I do have a couple of 22WMRs. I'm not exactly sure at the moment what the going rate for a box in my area is. But it seems like the last time I bought it 4-5 months ago I paid around 18$ for CCI Maxi Mags. I have around 350-400 rounds or so of 22WMR and I shoot them very little so those will last me many years. But with the future being so uncertain, if I needed it....I'd probably spend the 20-25$ or whatever it is to get it.
No, I don't need any at the moment. Some years back I sold my CZ512 American 22WMR because of lack of ammo. Then, around 2018 it became available again. So, I bought another CZ512 (a Carbine this time) and bought bunch CCI 40 gr GamePoint & FMJ and 8 boxes of A22 ammo (35 gr GamePoint; 200 rounds/box). My CZ512 is most accurate with the A22 ammo. Can't remember what I paid but I'm sure it was not as much as the going rate today. Now, if only I had done this with small pistol mag primers!!
I can't justify shooting a rimfire at $0.50/round. I stocked up on 17HMR before the crisis luckily. I also don't own a 22 mag. But I've been shooting my henry 357 more than anything else lately given that I can reload 38's relatively cheaply!
17 HMR is 19.99 at the Cheyenne Sportsman's warehouse
Wow just at our local Walmart and they had 50rd boxes for 10.99 I guess I should have bought a couple boxes
At that price you should have bought all you could afford.

drover
i bought a few boxes of hornady critical defense 22 mag at my LGS for $18 out the door the other night
