My dad hunted chucks w a Ruger #1 in .22-250.
Am not a .22-250 fan.

Thought about rebarreling it to .243win and using it on chucks myself.

Or use the wood and action to have it redone into a deer rig.

Could just grease it up and put in back of safe as is
He quit shooting it 20 plus yrs ago.

Trying to figure out what he would have wanted.
Hed want me to USE it.

I should shoot a couple groundhogs this summer w it as is in honor of him. But after that.....

We just dont have the chucks anymore.

I know one of the guys that bought a farm dad used to hunt. Might ask him if i can kill one there for Pop.

Rebore to 250 Savage
If he'd want you to use it, do what needs to happen for it to be usable. If that's a deer rig, go for it. Some will say don't alter it... but sitting in the safe isn't much of an honor. The stock and lever are what he had his hands on, regardless of chamberings. Just my 2 cents.

I can see my son asking that question in a few years....

He has no real use for them..... and I think my wife, will want to bury them all when I get buried... or more likely cremated...

I thought it was always sad when someone had firearms they loved, and then pass, and they get thrown in a closet for 50 years rusting away...

I'll probably give each of mine to someone young who I know will use them, instead of rush down and hock them for the money...

I get sentimental about that sort of stuff if you can't tell....

I have a few firearms that belonged to my Granddads and an Uncle or two...

ended up with a Marlin 93, in 25.20 that belonged to a friend when he passed, that had been his grandfathers, that was bought new in like 1905 or so...
He had no children or nephews to pass it down to... I ended up with it, because he knew i'd appreciate the historical perspective on it, and knowing its history...
According to the .22 crowd you have a great deer rifle right there...

I have a bunch of "other people's" guns in my safe.
Only 1 or 2 have a real use for me.
I could take the heavy barrel22-250 Sako and rebarrel it.
But, then it wouldn't be Cousin Eddie's. (Seriously)
Or the same in number #1. Good friend Ralph's

Point is, I love those guns because they are "theirs", and they make
me think of those old friends. If I butcher them up and make them
mine, that is gone.

If the only thing left of the originals is the s tion, that is no longer
special. It's just a commodity.
Those people didn't buy an action, really.
They pondered and chose the round, and the stock. That's where
their heart was, and what made it theirs.

If I needed something different, I'd buy it.

JMHO. And if there isn't any sentimentality involved.
Sell it and go buy "your" gun.

I have enough stuff of my own.

3 daughters.

None will give a flip about my crap.

Am the last shooter in my fam.
My youngest has a genetic disorder and we never saw it before. And yeah.....she is my kid LOL

So....no grandchildren.

If it were mine, and a good shooter, I’d enjoy it as-is for a bit first. Loaded down, it might last a long time. Cut grainfields attract lots of stuff that make interesting targets, crows, barn pigeons, and starlings. A good barrel is a terrible thing to waste.

Doesn't seem there’s much sentiment attached to it, so do whatever you like. A 1B or 1V would take a lot of paring down to make into a handy deer rifle IMO.

In the end, they're all just things......

I inherited a few my Grandad's and Dad's guns, and with no offspring to pass down the line, I eventually sold them off for the funds to replace them with others that suited me better. I feel better about being in charge of where they end up, rather than the cold reality of someone else just getting rid of them for the sake of getting rid of them.

Everyone has different situations, there's no right or wrong answer......

Hook

So sorry to hear about your daughter’s condition.

I’d leave it and hunt it every now and again
Posted By: hookeye Re: What to do w dads rifle - 02/27/21
Thanks Jerry.
She has improved some, things are much better.
Posted By: hookeye Re: What to do w dads rifle - 02/27/21
The #1 was hunted regularly for 15 or so yrs.
But never taken on a PD blast fest.
Could call Penrod and have him check it out.
No wrong answer here but if it were me and it had life left in it I would leave it as is and take it out from time to time and remember my dad. Not to say you couldn't do the same if you re-bore or re-barrel it but I would want it to be the same as it was when he was using it.

Dad quit using it yrs ago. And he had other rifles.
But this was his chuck rig the longest.

His lefty savage was rebarreled by Penrod. Way back.
He never shot it after. Pops was kinda funny sometimes.

This+10 hook, life will pass you by if you let go out spend sometime remembering your dad with rifle in hand Mb
Posted By: hookeye Re: What to do w dads rifle - 02/27/21
I need to have the copper removed and throat checked.
Dunno if its worn out or not.
Will call Mr Penrod next week and schedule an inspection.
Id like to put a 12x AO Leupold on it

Every year I take my dad’s Remington 760 out a day in deer season - hunted with him and that rifle 35 years and the memories it brings back are great ones.

I’d take that .22-250 out groundhog hunting every year and pay homage......but that’s just me and I tend to be a bit sentimental.

Really is no right answer here - do what your heart tells you is right.......since that is a part of your dad as well.

Hookeye, my Ol man gave me his #1 22-250, #627, don’t use it much, figure I’ll use it when I draw a good antelope tag..

JMHO- I'd use it at least once as is for something
and get it to the right person that would use it as
pop would.
My mother got rid of most of what my father had,
but I got to keep his Marlin she bought him when
they were young. Used it for my first whitetail and
countless others since even though I've been lectured
time after time about how inadequate of a deer rifle
it is. Very sentimental for me because I know how
tight money was for them when they were starting
out, and new in the box firearms were still kinda
scarce at that time

Yep that’s the route I’d go.

Not a bad reason to “have to” get out to fresh mown hayfields after woodchucks in the cool of a summer morning.

Nice rifle. Goat would be good in picture
Hook,

As we’ve discussed, I’m in the very same situation. In my case, the rifle goes back 2 more generations. I feel obliged to give it a whirl, as-is. It doesn’t hurt that it’s probably more accurate than any other rifle I own, nor that it carries & handles like a dream.

The 2 1/2x scope is a bit tough for my eyes, but I figure that if my forbears could take game with it, then I should be able to, as well.

It may never be my one-and-only, but I’m definitely taking it afield, and relishing their memories when I do.

I'm fortunate my 50 year old son is a shooter and hunter. He is also a gun lover, he'll get some real nice ones. I've been giving him one every year for Christmas. It's great seeing him take one out of the case.
Wouldn’t tell you what to do with your Dad’s rifle but will tell you what I have done with my Dad’s shotgun!
After Dad gave me his early 60,s Browning A5 L12 that he bought new and carried all the Deer, bird and rabbits hunts we went on. That I used to kill the my first buck. I bought it home and cleaned and lubed it the next range trip I and my brother shot a box of shell thru it. Being as that I am left handed I ordered a left hand safety. This was 5 years ago and I still haven’t put it in but it is in the packaging hanging from the trigger guard. I have told my son when I put it in the right hand one will be packaged up and put under the butt pad.

No real family history stuff.
My dad was a shooter/ dealer so rotated through a variety over the years.
Really the #1 he kept has the most hunting history.

Will call Penrod sometime this month and get it to him for inspection/ cleanup. My dad bought a few rigs from Schutz Bros when Mark worked there.

Proly add extension ring to rear and get the crosshairs squared, pop some dirt piggies.

Good enough.

I inherited my dads ruger #1 in 300 win mag.
I’m leaving it alone as he had it. Same for the m77 in 06.

I’m a 22-250 fan so I’d either leave it as is or go 22-250AI
Posted By: DigitalDan Re: What to do w dads rifle - 03/01/21
Long time friend gave me a M700 in .22-250 that had trigger issues. Dennis Erhardt rebarreled it and chambered it to .250 Savage. It is one of the most precise rifles I own. One curious aspect is that 85 BTs will group around 1/2” and 100 NPT hover in the 1/4” realm.

Keep it in the family
Posted By: hookeye Re: What to do w dads rifle - 03/01/21
Just me and sis.
We both have daughters.
Im the only shooter/ hunter.
Am the last.

No grandkids due to some genetic thing popping up out of the blue on my youngest.

I guess you need to decide how bad you want to use it. If you really want to use it pull the barrel, I would save that by the way, and put a new barrel on copying the factory contour.

I would chamber in the same case head size so as not to permanently modify the rifle. I'd go with a 25-06 myself.

Cool to see several other guys on here with their fathers Ruger No. 1s. Here's a pic of my dad's 6mm Rem. with a 4 digit serial no. The one I just got back from Ruger getting rid of the salt wood.

Deer, hell - Eskimos hunt polar bears and everything else with them. Hardly any Eskimos get killed or eaten, either, by wounded game.
Posted By: hookeye Re: What to do w dads rifle - 03/01/21
.22 cf not legal for deer here.
Only shot one deer w .243 win ( #1 RSI ) and was not impressed w factory 100gr.
200gr .35 rem is a wee bit better wink

Pops #1 will be the 4th ive owned.
Posted By: hookeye Re: What to do w dads rifle - 03/01/21
The orig red pad does need replaced as its got some delam going on.
I've got a number 1V in 7mm mag that was my grandfather's. Every couple years I take it to the range just to shoot it. Some day I'd like to take a deer with it just to say I did but I'm sentimental that way.

Sounds like your Dad was a savvy gun guy. There was a reason he hung onto that #1 and I would honor his sensibilities by hanging onto it also. But, I would make it into something that suited my own sensibilities. If altering its current state is to happen, so what- its bones are still the same bones your Dad liked. It's still the same rifle, only something you both had a hand in. I bet he'd tell you to go for it.
Posted By: hookeye Re: What to do w dads rifle - 03/02/21
My dad was a dealer for years so its not like his only rifle.
But when he got older he sold off his collection
Had a few #1s and they were all sold off cept this one
Tried to give me a NIB 1V stainless a few yrs back.
6.5 x 55 is a great round to consider.
