5 gun battery. Been a bit since this topic has crossed the board unless I missed it - which is possible too.
What 5 & why? Make it personal and share any details that are important to you. I know many of us could build several (many) different 5 gun combos that could do anything but there are a few new members posting that might be building their first battery.
Im curious what the batteries would look like as we travel around our country & beyond. Understanding that we each do different things with our tools - I suspect none will be the same but selfishly hope to draw out a few common threads. Have fun fellas
Today my Ruger-ish battery is:
.22 Mag - Ruger 77/22M
6mm Rem - Ruger 77 Flatbolt
308 Ruger 77 RL
338-06 Ruger 77 R
12ga O/U - Valmet
5 really? Not going to touch it with a 10 foot pole..
5 gun varmint battery:
17 HMR CZ 457
17 Hornet CZ 527
17 Fireball Remington Model 7
20 Vartarg Cooper 38
22-250 1-8 twist Tikka Varmint
5 really? Not going to touch it with a 10 foot pole..
Hahaha I understand…fully.
My 5 gun hunting battery:
1. 22 Long Rifle Remington 541T
2. 223 Remington 700 BDL Varmint Special
3. 30-06 Springfield Beretta Mato
4. 416 Rigby CZ 550 Magnum
5. 12 gauge Caesar Guerini Summit Sporting
This is in the hunting rifle section so I assume it's a 5 hunting rifle battery?
1) Cz 452 American 22 LR
2) Cz 527 221 Fireball
3) Ruger MPR .223
4) Rem 700 .308 Win
5) Ruger 77 .300WM
If I had to get by with just 5 altogether.
1) Cz452 .22LR
2)Colt 6920 .223
3) Franchi Affnity 12ga
4) Cz 527 .221 FB
5) Rem 700 .308Win
Cz455 .22 lr
Ruger #1B .22-250
Rem 700 ADL .243
Rem 760 ADL .35 rem
Steyr Prohunter .3006
Boring stuff but covers all ill need
Proly could get by w .243 and .3006 rifles and a .22lr pistol.
1. Ruger Mark III 5.5" bull barrel
2. .243 Ruger 77 (or maybe .25-06)
3. .375 Ruger 77
4. Winchester Model 12 Heavy Duck cut to 26", steel shot safe tubes installed and lead removed from the buttstock to make it more svelte
5. Glock 22 (or maybe 19)
That should do it.
How about 10x5?
12 gauge
223 AR
7 mag
338 win mag
375 H&H
1. Ruger Blackhawk 357/9mm
2. Marlin 1894 357 Mag.
3. Remington 700 Classic 7X57 3.5x10 Leupold
4. Remington 870 Mag. 12ga. Mod/and a 20" smoothbore barrel/rifle sights
5. Glock 17 9mm
I tried this and it didn’t work out for me.
A little off the shelf as I'm primarily a coyote and duck hunter.
Rem 700 lightweight in 20P(coyotes)
Savage 10 22-204(coyotes)
Savage 10 25-204 (deer, cougar, javelina)
JP Sauer 16ga/16ga/7x57R (big game and whatever)
Husqvarna 51 sxs (waterfowl)
Yes, these are my goto's right now with a few others mixed in for special circumstances.
I thought this was 5 rifles LOL.
Hell no to being limited to 5 total irons.
🤣
But if it was 5 rigs for everything, sporting and other.....
.223 in an AR 15 16"
.30-06 in a bolt rifle
9mm P365
.50 cal MZ
And a 12 ga 870 supermagnum 23"
I tried this and it didn’t work out for me.
Same. My downsizing to five turned into 10 and 10 turned into...
.22
.223
6mm ARC
6.5x55
12 gauge
I tried this and it didn’t work out for me.
Same. My downsizing to five turned into 10 and 10 turned into...
Yes, downsizing for me was futile. I sold my Ruger 338 and said I don’t need a 338 and ended up with a Winchester Super Grade. Sold the super grade and said no more 338’s and now have a Kimber. Just going to keep the Kimber because I’ll just end up with something else. Oh, I also have 325 WSM Kimber that I needed for some reason.
I actually started doing the mental gymnastics of which 5 rifles I would keep and then I saw people were including shotguns and pistols. I’m out, getting down to 5 firearms just can’t be done! 😁
My 5. 22lr, 22 hornet 22-250, 30-06 12ga.
I’ll try just for giggles.
CZ 455 stainless in 22 mag.
Remington model seven predator in 223.
Remington mountain rifle in 7x57.
Mark X mauser actioned custom stocked 9.3x62.
Remington 870 12 gauge with modified 28” and smooth bore 20” barrels.
I think with these 5 similarly configured actions (except the pump) and cartridge choices, I could hunt just about anything, comfortably.
12 gauge (Rem 870)
32-20 (Model 1892)
243 Win (Savage 114 AC)
280 Rem (M70 FWT)
9.3x62 (Win 670)
I'd start with the classic 3-gun battery: .22lr, 12 ga, and deer rifle. Whatever flavors you prefer.
Add a .223 bolt gun (left handed mini mauser) and a .38 j-frame (S&W 36).
If living in a warzone, swap in an AR and a Glock.
Ruger 10/22 .22LR
Vanguard .240 WBY
Mauser .35 Whelen
Weatherby MK5 .340 WBY
Benelli 12ga.
Maybe a little over gunned with the .240, but it shoots amazing. My other current option in that slot is a Mauser .257 Bob.
77/22 .22 wmr
Remington 7615 .223/556
M70 .257 Wby
700 .350 Rem
SP-10 10ga
How about 10x5?
12 gauge
223 AR

338 win mag

I hear ya on the x5
Could be a 5 gun overall or just a a 5 gun hunting battery. Fun to read however you want to play it. Btw - I couldn’t narrow it down any easier than any of you guys - it’s just been a long snowy day & I was curious.
I do see lots of love for CZ .22LR’s - I have to agree, my 455 is a great gun.
So many great responses!
5 ought to get it done but leaves no room for fun.
If I had to be restricted….
357 revolver or 9mm auto (357 Blackhawk)
17hmr for hunting or 22 for plinking (suppressed 17HMR)
6.5-308 general purpose rifle (6.5 Grendel)
300-375 large rifle (35 Whelen)
Shotgun of choice (16 ga Ithaca)
.45 Wilson LW Commander EDC
.22 LR Kimber Just cuz
7mm RemMag Winchester 70 Western Game
338 Win Mag Winchester 70 for Alaska
.358 Win Kimber Montana for Adk Whitetail
$h1t, I have about a dozen rifles I don't need.
I could survive with these three left hand:
1) Rem 581 .22LR suppressed
2) Rem 700 KS 270 Win
3) Benelli SBE 12ga
Everything else is just a "want"...

I have a different list but the same last line. Maybe it’s time to reconsider.
Why would I need 5?
Why would I need 5?
That’s a great question. I was hoping you’d chime in.
Ruger 10/22 in 22lr
Kimber Montana 223
Kimber Montana 7-08
Wilson Hackathorn Special 45 ACP
Winchester Super X4 in 12ga
2022 i'm gonna roll
18" rifle length gas ar build.. 55gr for practice, 77 for killing
switch to 22lr upper for plinking/practice
all others are going into long term storage. won't see them until middle of 2023 at the earliest. if i can't kill it with a 77gr tmk then it doesn't need to be killed. i'll borrow back the 6br i loaned if i get lucky on elk tag/tags.

257 Robert’s Nula - coyotes/deer
30-06 Nula - basic all rounder (current favorite)

Five guns:
5 plinking 22's
5 hunting 22's
5 target 22's
5 varmint 22's
5 small game walking rifles
5 small game sitting rifles
5 close range colony varmint rifles
5 medium range colony varmint rifles
5 long range colony varmint rifles
...etc, etc, etc
Bruce
Yeah I cant do with only 5 guns total so I cant play this game 👎🏾......Hb
Feel’s gross to talk about only having/using five rifles. But I’ll play along.
Browning BL-22 for small vermin
Ruger American 8 twist 22-250 for bigger vermin, and antelope if needed
Custom Remington 700 257 WBY for Deer and Antelope
Remington 700 300 Win Mag for elk
Remington 11-87 12 gauge. Ducks and geese.
5 gun battery
No 22 rim fires, they are illegal where I live. Don't ask.
1) Browning X-Bolt stainless .223 Rem.
2) Tikka Superlight stainless (in McEdge stock) 6.5 CM
3) Ruger No.1 stainless/walnut 6.5x55 SE
4) Winchester M70 stainless Featherweight (in McEdge stock) 30-06 Spr.
5) Remington 870 Magnum Express (old one) w/bird and slug barrels 12 GA.
5 rifles would cover everything I do pretty nicely, but I definitely have more. Here would be my line up, mix of function and class. I like nice walnut, and synthetic as well. This is from my current line up, and would give me plenty of overlap and cover all my bases for North America.
1. Cz452 22LR

I'll try:
17 Hornet
223 Tikka T3 Hunter
6mm Remington
308 Tikka T3
338 Federal or 9,3x62
I'll use Seafire's data to download my 223 loads to 22LR, 22 Mag and 22 Hornet.
The 6mm Remington and 338 Federal are barrels for my R8.
The 338 Federal could be replaced by the 9,3x62 R8 barrel and would really up my game.
22lr
223
300 Magnum
12 gauge
50 cal.ML
,223 would be dropped if I could just have 4.
That's easy. I have no interest in Africa, Big Bears, or Varmints, apart from gophers...
22lr scoped, w/ backup open sights - 77/22 All Weather
Lightweight 308 - Kimber MT
Midweight 308 w/ backup open sights - M70 SS
12 Gauge Pump Shotgun - Remington 870
Glock 19 or SS 4" Ruger Security Six - I have both but push to shove would probably go Glock.
22lr - Brno Mod 2
222 - Sako AI Hunter
222 - Sako AI Varmint
30-06 - Brno ZG-47
308 - Tikka T3 SS
Still the same as has been for 30+ years.....a good , scoped, 22 rim fire, bolt action rifle and my .375 AI. No reason to alter that which works! memtb

It is all fun, but unless some severe lifestyle changes have to happen, there is no way I could I would ever get down to five firearms.
Hunting, firearms and bows are pretty much all I do besides work and family.
I always think of hunting rifles when these questions arise, and I always answer the same. That said if “battery” goes beyond hunting rifles.....a few more than 5! memtb
Ruger 77 30-06
Parker bros. 12 gauge
Henry .22
Colt 1911
Traditions. 50 flintlock
Everything else could go although I wish I could squeeze my Glock in
So it’s cool if a hunter takes a particular cartridge & chooses several platforms right? I could easily make a 30-06 serve the deep woods & also the high open mountains. Two rifles of the same cartridge count as one rifle?
Maybe batteries for 2022 could express the benefits that todays bullets give us…right? Like who would have ever thought 30 years ago that the .223 would be doing what it is. (77TMK)

One needs a .22 long rifle to train and with which to procure a small game at moderate ranges. My choice would be a Ruger 10-22 with a fixed four power scope.
One needs a defensive pistol with which to defend family and home at short ranges. My choice would be a Browning Hi-Power in 9 mm.
One needs a shotgun with which to defend family and home at moderate ranges and with which to procure winged game. My choice would be a 12 gauge Benelli.
One needs a major caliber rifle with which to defend the home and family at medium to long ranges and procure large game. My choice would be a Winchester model 70 stainless in 30-06, mounted with either a 2.5 x 8 or 3 x 9
In this day and age I think one is wise to have a combat arm. My choice would be an AR platform in 5.56 with some sort of optical red dot site.
Five gun for a particular hunt/shoot???
Ok, for Prairie Dogs here goes:
17 Hornet
204 Ruger
223 Remington
22-250
22-250AI
And a 45 Colt revolver loaded with #7 for snakes.
I usually don’t bring five for big game, since three will be enough.

feed it one 50cal ammo can filled full of whatever ammo u like.

While I’m attached to most all of my firearms. I won’t sell my Dad’s Winchester Pre64 SuperGrade Featherweight in 30/06 or his Winchester Model 71 348 Win that was stolen from him exactly, to the day, 40 years ago.
Police recovered the 348 Win after a man, who claimed to have bought it 40 years earlier, had tried to sell it on consignment through a gun store. They had to run the serial # before taking it on consignment. It came up stolen. I got the call from the police on the exact day, 40 years later from when it was taken.

At least 3 GOP House members has been implicated in helping the Terroists who attacked last week.
One was even tweeting where other House and Senate members where hiding.... so the terrorists could find them.
I have five guns in the chest of drawers by my bed. I can't contemplate life without 100.
I've culled my rifles to seven, that's as low as I'll go, at least for now...
6mm Creedmoor, Christensen Arms
270 Win X 2 = CA Ridgeline, Win 70
308 Win, Defiance Tenacity, Proof Carbon Barrel
7mm RM X 2 = CA Ridgeline, Win 70
30-06 Win 70
Ruger 10/22
Thompson Center Hawken 50 cal
All wear McMillan stocks with the exception of the 7mm Rm win 70, that's a Brown Precision.
Don't use the shotguns much but there's a Mossberg pump, 12ga turkey gun, a Beretta O/U 12 ga 3", a Beretta 303 in 20 ga and a Win 370 Youth 20 ga, my first ever gun given to me by my father when I was 8, 49 years and counting on that one!
I always get a kick out of the "in the spirit of the thread" responses of, "no way" as though if you participated it just might happen. "If your pickup blew up and you had to choose another form of transportation, what would it be?" "Um, not for me, I don't want my truck to blow up". I will participate and, no, I too don't want it to happen.
Mine:
1) Ruger 10/22 bull barrel rifle
2) Sig P365 9mm
3) Remington 870 Wingmaster 12 gauge
4) Tikka Stainless CTR 223
5) Bergara Mountain Rifle Gen 1 308
Assuming rifles.....the same quality, accurate 22 LR bolt gun that I’ve used for 21 years and my only hunting rifle of 31 years. If it ain’t broke.....😉
The rest of the money will be spent on handguns! memtb

Gotta say I enjoyed your perspective - funny we humans are.
Ha! Worked on this philosophy long ago and went off the rails. Waayy more than five ended up in my possession.
Now, I've been trying to work it back down - with exceptions
1. Winchester 69A 22lr
2. Win model 12 - 12GA
3. M70 Fwt 30-06
4. Heavy revlover - Looking at S&W, Freedom Arms 44mag or Colt SAA 44 Spcl.
5. Small pistol - maybe ruger Mark V, Single Six, Colt convertable.
What about a back-up rifle?
What about a ????
I'll always have more tah I use or need.
I’m only limited by what I can afford and hide from my wife.
This thread reminds me of the good-old light-hearted campfire days back when I joined! Nice break from all the political and whacko threads!
My 5-gun battery would be:
22LR - Volquartsen w/ Summit w/ Tract 3-9 BDC
223 Wylde - Colt/Geissle/WOA GUN-MK1.9 UPPER w/ Trijicon Credo 1-8 FFP mil-mil
270 Win - Rem 700 w/ Bushnell 3-12 LRHS FFP mil-mil
45-70 Govt - JM Marlin 1895GST w/ XS Ghost-ring sights
12ga - Benelli M2 24"
5 "guns"? I've said for years, every American needs 5.
22 rifle
12ga. Repeater (pump/auto)
30-06, 270, 308ish bolt gun
Carbine of some sort, could be AR, AK or 30-30
Pistol, choice depends on area, application, need.
For me that means,
CZ 452
Mossberg 500
Tikka T3X
AR
Glock 17
22LR
12 ga shotgun
9mm pistol
223
270 Winchester
But life would be very boring
I'm gonna approach this as 5 total for the hell of it.
1) Ruger 10-22
2) AR-15 in 5.56
3) Synthetic stocked, 24-26", 12 gauge Remington 870
4) Glock 17 or 19 or 3-4" stainless revolver in 357 or 44 special - This one really depends on whether you'd want it for outdoors carry.
5) Bolt action hunting rifle of choice in either 300 win, 7mm rem, or 375 depending on how far reaching your hunting plans.
Funny enough but I don't own half of this list as I tend to have more specialized guns since we're not this limited!

My intention exactly! A little light hearted fun despite our current circumstances.
The top 5 that the government wants to take a way first. Give me those..grin
God bless the American gun owner and pass the ammo !

Ruger 10/22
Tikka 223

and the 9.3 for my XD 9 mm

Tikka 6.5 CM
Tikka 30/06

You should get a T1X and another Tikka (long action caliber) to be punched to 9.3x62.
Talk about familiarity!
