So, I picked up a Remington 725 in 30-06 at a gun show last weekend. Pretty decent shape, definitely seen it’s fair share of use.

My problem is the sights. Rear is missing altogether, but should be able to find a substitute. The real problem is the front. It is the same shape and contour as some later model 700 sights I have, BUT it is apparently soldered on instead of being screwed on. And the sight insert is pinned instead of being dovetailed. Fortunately, the pins are still there.

Does anybody know where to get a front sight insert???
Numrich was no help, they even listed the front sight as being held on with screws.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Maybe give Midwest Gun Works a call as well and a WTB here In The classifieds.

That’s a cool rifle. I have one in 280 and I love it.

Already put an add in the classifieds.
Is your front sight the same?

I don’t have any great pics of the front sight but it looks like the same set up.

Kenster…. Damn fine rifle.

I think your only hope is going to be to make one.

Were I to be in your shoes I’d first see if the depth of the dovetail on the bottom of a common M700 front sight blade is as deep as the pin hole on your front base. If so you’re in luck. Take one of them and either mill or file it until you’re left with a protrusion that will fit into the slot. Clamp it in place and carefully drill for the pin hole, a little at a time from each side so you don’t miss the offside hole.

If the dovetail isn’t deep enough for this to work you could use the same M700 blade but file, grind, or mill the bottom off flat. Shape a piece out of key stock to fit the base and solder it onto the blade.

Pretty nice rifle too, certainly worth the effort to get it looking nice.

TheKid,
I think making one is probably my best option. Not a lot of spare parts with less than 17,000 total made. I have a couple of dovetailed sights, I’ll have to measure later and see how they compare.

I know one person that has a 270, this is the only one I’ve seen in the wild.
They were made for 4 years only, something like 16,800 total made.
I was happy to find this one.

I've got one in .280 gifted to me from an elderly friend over 40 years ago. Great rifle shoots well under an inch. My only problem is that I'm 6'1" and he was 5'6''. He cut the stock in order for it to work for him. So...if I'm not careful I punch myself in the nose when I shoulder it. Anyone know where I can get a stock?

Just put a thicker recoil pad on it. That’s what I had to do for my first year model 700. It had been cut, I added a kickeeze magnum pad and it gained me an inch.

I have two 725s and they’re nice rifles. The rear sight assembly is the same as that of the early 700s. As you have found, the front is a different matter. The front sight hoods are another hard to fine item.

Making one should be pretty easy. Measure the slot and buy a piece of brass stock of the proper thickness. Cut and file to fit. Drill for the pins or use epoxy. You can color the sides with paint pens and leave the aiming point bright, or paint it to your taste. Ask here about the proper height, then leave a bit extra to be safe. I’d set the rear to the middle elevation position, then file the front to zero. That should give you plenty of adjustment on tap.

Good bit of advice, thanks.
