Anyone else enjoy getting close with a big/slow cartridge? I've been using SS rifles and handgun for the last several years, and the 45/70, 30-30 and 44mag just plain work. How worry they are with a can just make it better.
Same goes for the muzzle loader.
If I'm not using archery gear, my "getting close" usually involves a kimber montana in 7mm-08.
Though this year it should be another montana, but in .338 Fed.
I'm going towards big and slow more these days. 30-06 is still my favorite all around but most places I hunt 100 yards is a long shot. I'll be using single shots in 44 mag and 500 S&W some this year. Just picked up the 500 the other day

Niiiiice. The Handi in 44mag was claimed by my niece.
My 375 Clark launches a 270gr. Hornady sp at a mear 1960fps. It punches a nice clean hole in the boiler room. No expansion, no meat damage.

I had the 44 mag H&R years ago. Had a 788 in 44 also but I don't want to talk about that š¤„. Just picked this one up earlier this year. Mounted a 1.75-5 Burris on it. Shoots into 2" at 100 off a rest with my handloads and I can keep it on 6" steel at 150 off an improvised rest . Plenty good enough for the woods
Yesā¦.while I do have a 45-70 Guide Gun, my handgun is my preferred close range gun! memtb
Yep, just finishing testing a 788 44 magnum shooting 400 grain bullets at 1000 fps. Doesn't get much bigger or slower than that.

That sounds awesome. I'm liking 300's out of the CVA pistol so far.

I had McGowen put a 1 in 18 on it. Cast range lead powder coated and seated to just under magazine length.

That would sound like a mouse fart with a silencer. š

is that CVA rifle in 45/70? if so how is the accuracy?
been thinking about one of them in a 45-70
This is my 445 Super Mag, 300 gran bullets even a 210 at 2,000 fps in testing. But it is way to heavy to carry hunting. So I carry a 4" Model 66.
Does a 500 Jeffery count?

I'm getting about 1.5" for 5 shots at 100 with 300 grain bullets so far.

Just simple and mighty effective! Great choice Sir
i use TC Encore with 23" MGM barrels in 444 Marlin and 500 Linebaugh. for the 444, i use the 265gr Hornady FN, 255gr Keith type, 275gr Ranch Dog, 280gr WFN GC, 280gr LFN GC and 300gr SAECO FN GC. for the 500L i use a 450gr LFN. i used to use a Handi rifle in 45-70 and 405gr FN. i have a Ruger SBH (4 5/8" barrel) in 44 Rem mag with 250gr penta HP, 255gr Keith and 280gr WFN and they are around 900-1000fps. except for the Hornady (2300fps +/-), my bullets are going 1200 - 1900+/- fps and they can kill deer.
i also have a Husqvarna m46 in 9.3x57 and 275gr WFN GC(1936fps) and a Winchester m94 (1972 Top Eject) in 35/30-30 (JES Reboring) with 200gr FN GC (1700+fps). they kill deer too.
the rifles are around 1/2" to 1 1/2" at 100 yards (5 shots/bench), although i gave up benchrest accuracy to eh, as long as it's a 3 or 4" at 100 yards, i'm good. 30 - 40 yards are about an average shot in my area. 100 yards + is rare. i cast my own because i got tired of factory bullets. although this year i now use the TC Contender with a 10" barrel in 30 Herrett and 130gr Speer HP. after i kill a couple of deer with it, i have another 10" barrel in 357 Herrett that i will use cast for.

I know for a fact a 385gr Buffalo bullet will make a deers hooves slide on impact
300's at 1500-1600 don't leave a mess, but damn sure work. I can imagine what done of the bigger ones do, especially at the same speed or faster
in the 444, i was using 300gr SAECO FN GC at 1624fps and they don't leave a mess, but they sure do kill deer.
I'm primarily a muzzleloader, but also have a very fine Remington 760 in .35 Remington...
dang, looks like an artillery shell
I can cover a lot of different hunting situations with my 6.5x55 Ruger #1S & my 30-06 Sako Hunter during the regular season. But in early November in LA & MS, primitive hunting can be done with a single shot that's .35 caliber or larger if it's breech-loaded and has an exposed hammer. In those situations, I like to take the 1885's with a bigger bore out. The bullets might be slower but they're definitely more than adequate for the job.

Man, I need to step up my 45/70 bullet weight. 300g bullets seem downright dainty after reading this stuff.
The jacketed 300 grain soft points do an amazing job on deer though, with very little recoil.
My favorite big and slow. 400 Whelen, 400 grain bullet (in this case a Hawk) 2150 fps.
A 400 grain Woodleigh. No blue tape so I wore blue gloves.
This time a screaming fast light weight. A 300 grain Barnes TSX at 2300.

You're doing just fine! In addition to my 400gr Woodleigh Weldcores, I also have the 300gr Hornady Interlock SP & some hand-loaded 300gr flat points. So I shoot the "lightweight" stuff like you do too.
My 450/400 3" #1. 400 grain RN, Weldcore, DGX, & DGX Bonded. All launched right around 2050 fps, more or less depending on the particular bullet.
'Ol giggles never fails.
I'm gonna try to plug a deer with a .401 SL this year.

Hey
mart, I liked your photographs the first time I saw them but I was paying too much attention to the game. Glancing at them a second time, I realized your .400 Whelen is a left-handed model. Sweet! What model rifle is that?
Itās a model 70. 24 inch Shilen barrel. It wears either a Lyman 48 receiver sight or a Redfield 2 3/4x post and crosshair scope.
That pretty but we need more info.
I am with Mart! The .400 Whelen for meā¦although my rifle likes the 360s best at a lightning fast 2225 fps.
My idea of big and slow is a .35 Whelen 225 gr Partition at 2,740 fps. Feetās up.
Iāve done a lifetimeās worth of 45/70, 458 and 50 Alaskan shooting, plenty enough for me anyway.
I did take my Whelen with 250s at 2550 on a moose hunt last fall but thatās about as big as my rifle stuff gets these days.
These days if Iām shooting big and slow itās either handgun stuff or deer hunting with my longbow. Giant Simmons broadheads on heavy arrows at 165fps is pretty big and slow I guess.
425 grains of wheel weight at 1400 fps.

I prefer big and fast. Iāll be toting a CVA Scout 444 Marlin to the woods this fall. Shooting a 225 grain Bear Creek Ballistics Bullet with an average velocity of 2,680 fps. I recently bought a CVA Scout 45-70 hopefully Iāll get some loads worked up for it as well.
OK, not āBig &Slowāā¦..how about āMedium & Mediumā!
375 AI with 280 grain castā¦..only about 1400 fps. Great for plinking with my huntān rifle! š memtb

You and me both! My 444 holds its own.
The triggers on my muzzle loader, 44mags (rifle and pistol) and 45/70 are all amazing. Even more so considering the price point.

What ya hunting? Elephant!
I stick with 240's out of my 788, 44 mag.
Do these count?
