If <$100, I'd consider it for a loaner/beater

Not worth buying.
Stevens 200 is far better.
The 710 scope is worth about $29.99.
BMT
It's a plastic pos with more recalls on it than a old Pinto.
It works fine, but I'd get the Marlin if you're looking for a cheap gun.
It's a Remington with a Bushnell scope, how could you go wrong?
Seriously, why? Buy a higher quality used rifle or the Stevens 200.
It comes with a Tasco scope.
Bushnell/Trashco all the same now.
Buy a used rifle before that pile of garbage..
Shows a lack of knowledge. Nothin' new.
Keep talking out your azz it's entertaining. Bushnell owns tasco and simmons.
what is wrong with the riflw?
MM; don't confuse him with knowledge.....that'll muddy up his whole puddle...
Ingwe
Get a used 700 it will serve you better in long run. If you want new get a Vanguard.
Facts are tough in fantasy land
Only when he pokes his head out...
Ingwe
He comes here for daily dose. You think he wears tinfoil?
Tinfoil? on what parts of his body???
Ingwe
I ain't going there....
You can be a scary dude!
Fit and finish are what's wrong with rifle, forgive the Tasco/Bushnell error (it was kinda directed to get a rise outta someone). And it's already been phased out by the 770.
Curious why you'd be interested in it?
For my $300-$350 new, go Howa/Vanguard, or Stevens 200, which is essentially the same as the Savage.
Used, you ought to be able to find a 700 or good sporterized Mauser. For an even better value than a Mauser, Enfield 1917s are great too. But a little heavy and not exactly a good looking.
what is wrong with the riflw?
The manner of construction is flawed. Critical parts are press fit (IIRC).
Some things really need to be welded/threaded/machined in order to hold up.
The Stevens 200 is a proven design, with basic parts.
The 710 was designed for manufacturing ease and low cost, not to stand up for a long period of time.
BMT
Sorry for hijack. What BMT and Exbio. are telling you is correct. The Stevens can be had for $299 around here and the Weatherby Vanguard goes for $399. The Vanguard is a quality built rifle with an accuracy guarantee and a little more refined IMO. The Stevens are good shooters for the price.
A big +1 for the Vanguard..
Ingwe
im not sayin they didnt come with a tasco but they did come with a bushnell sharpshooter at one point my friend has one. and what a pos it is. if your currently competing for the worlds strongest man event you should be able to cycle the bolt no problem.
i was wondering becuz i saw them so cheap?
and accuracy?
if i get it it wil be for backup or for fun shooting
how cheap? .... seriously, when I said $100 ... that would be the max I'd spend on one .... $50-75 is more like it for me to own one. More than a c-note and I'm looking elsewhere.
I've actually walked into gun shops and seen them on the shelves for $350 used (when they sold new for $299)!!!! Go figure.
avagadro is right they are not a very good rifle i had one the very first year they came out and shooting at a buck and the bolt handle fell off they are put in on a gear and sweated in we brazed it back on and sold the rifle the action is ruff working i would just buy the stevens or the mossberg way better rifle for the money
A poor rifle isn't a fun gun in my opinion, we shoot some guns more because we like them. Looking at gunbroker, over the last 90 days at rifles that actually sold, the highest price was $315. Most were around $250. These just came out a few years ago, that should tell you something. I think you'd have more fun with the Handi-Rifle you were inquiring about. But if you want a repeater, we can write you a small list of new and used interesting guns under $400.
A spare rifle that would be fun to shoot and kill the snot out of deer would be a 30-30 lever.
Get the Marlin for $299.00.
I've seen them for $150 used, watch your local classifieds or trading papers.

I had the chance to get a 710 FOR FREE in 30-06.
All I had to do was drive 45 minutes up the road and pick it up.
I chose to drive over to a buddy's house and watch UFC 100.
Point being, a FREE 710 was not worth the trouble--too many recalls to risk my one set of eyes.

Amen.
Lots available in a decent price range, especially the post 1964 94 Winchesters.
BMT
i have alever 30-30 already
i have a lever 30-30 already
Very well then.
Skip the 710.
Do you have good optics on the 30/30?
That is where I would spend my $$ next.
BMT
I got it now.... I just remembered, Remington owns Marlin, so hawking the Marlin is ok....
They stink of cheap. The trigger sucks, and I've not met a gunsmith that will touch them. Not much in the way of aftermarket parts if you decide to upgrade anything. They don't generally beat the price on stevens or marlin by much if any, and are generally within $50 of the 700 ADL's and Vanguards from what I've seen.
A guy went into Walmart during deer season and leaves his 710 Remington in his truck. When he comes out he discovers someone had broken into his truck......and left him another 710.
You're never set, get a cool old sporterized Mauser
i have a winchester model 94 post
only shot 17 rounds through it
bought it on the year 94
NO
MOD at 100, usually
Gone fishin'...

Dat's funny!

Me too ... and it doesn't get hunted nearly enough ... I may hafta change that this year, if I do whitetails in in Coleville NF again this year. Either that or my MRC 7-08 which hasn't seen field time yet either. prolly the Marlin.
Wish Remington never came out with the 710.........

I worked at a major regional chain sporting goods retailer for a while. We got a whole lot of the 710's back with defects typically related to the bolt. I shot one. It was crude but plenty hunting accurate. It is likely that for the same amount you would pay for the 710, you could get a Stevens, Marlin or Mossberg ATR, all of which should shoot well and give a lifetime of good service.
I might use it as a boat anchor.... wait it does not work for that either.

It is my understanding that the ATR's can be dangerous also (IIRC), check the archives here in Hunting Rifles forum. Their design leaves a bit to be desired too.
I would pass on the M710 or the "new" M770. If I was wanting a new bolt action hunting rifle on a budget, I would buy a Stevens 200 or Howa 1500 without hesitation.
I see Remington 710s in 270 and 30-06 in pawnshops quite
often, usually priced 229 or under. They sit for awhile
before selling. I would go with a Stevens 200 or a Remington
700ADL synthetic.
Used Remington 700, used Model 70 post 64 pushfeed, Marlin bolt would be my top choices in a fun gun.
The firing pin will come out of the gun when you fire it. True story. I ran into a young fellow at my favorite sitting spot for elk, so I invited him to sit with me. I told him he could fire first if elk came out, and they did. He fired once, nicked a cow, and I said, shoot her again. He said he couldn't, his firing pin was out...and it was, in his hand. I had to finish his cow and then, shoot mine, which I did.
The Savage or Stevens are better guns. I believe the Marlin would also be a better gun, too, but have no experience with them.
Shows a lack of knowledge. Nothin' new.
You seem to have a knack for claiming anyone stupid who says anything negative about your pet brand.
The Remington 710/770 is the poorest quality rifle currently in production, and quite honestly it baffles me how anyone could recommend the POS.

+1 The 710 and 770 are both a hardcore pos..
seriously, stay away from the 710. That is unless you want to buy another rifle in 1 year when you realize there is so many better options in the same price point.
Take the Marlin XL7 for instance. Fantastic gun and you get it new for about $289. Stevens, Vangaurd, so many options for better rifles in that price. I have a one of the marlin XL7's and it's every bit as good a shooter as my Winny M70 if not better. It's smooth and quite a nice gun for the price. The 710 is what i call the BIC lighter of rifles. It's ugly, it's cheap and quite rough to operate. At least the couple i handled. Its kind of a joke for Remington to put their name on this gun to be honest when other smaller companies can produce bargain rifles that blow it away.
Rem. 710/770 = schit on a plastic stick.

Your being entirely too generous. I would give 50 cents for that glorified tomato stake
I would give 50 cents for that glorified tomato stake
I wouldn't.... Too high...
The Remington M710 and M770 deserve every negative thing said about them. Even on the cheap they are much too expensive for what you get.
Get a Weatherby, Savage, Marlin, or Stevens and never look back. Also look at used rifles.
thanks
the only remington firearm i have is a 870 for home defense
If you're only going to have one, that's the one to have.
Figure the other "ones" to have would be a Remington-Rand 1911A1 (as a Remington handgun), a Remington 03A3 (military) and/or a Remington Model 30.
Of course, YMMV.................................
damn
i guess remington sucks bad
