A guy went into Walmart during deer season and leaves his 710 Remington in his truck. When he comes out he discovers someone had broken into his truck......and left him another 710. Dat's funny! i have alever 30-30 already Me too ... and it doesn't get hunted nearly enough ... I may hafta change that this year, if I do whitetails in in Coleville NF again this year. Either that or my MRC 7-08 which hasn't seen field time yet either. prolly the Marlin.

Is it worth buying? accuracy? Reliability? I worked at a major regional chain sporting goods retailer for a while. We got a whole lot of the 710's back with defects typically related to the bolt. I shot one. It was crude but plenty hunting accurate. It is likely that for the same amount you would pay for the 710, you could get a Stevens, Marlin or Mossberg ATR, all of which should shoot well and give a lifetime of good service.

It is my understanding that the ATR's can be dangerous also (IIRC), check the archives here in Hunting Rifles forum. Their design leaves a bit to be desired too.

I would pass on the M710 or the "new" M770. If I was wanting a new bolt action hunting rifle on a budget, I would buy a Stevens 200 or Howa 1500 without hesitation.

I see Remington 710s in 270 and 30-06 in pawnshops quite often, usually priced 229 or under. They sit for awhile before selling. I would go with a Stevens 200 or a Remington 700ADL synthetic.

Used Remington 700, used Model 70 post 64 pushfeed, Marlin bolt would be my top choices in a fun gun.
JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

The firing pin will come out of the gun when you fire it. True story. I ran into a young fellow at my favorite sitting spot for elk, so I invited him to sit with me. I told him he could fire first if elk came out, and they did. He fired once, nicked a cow, and I said, shoot her again. He said he couldn't, his firing pin was out...and it was, in his hand. I had to finish his cow and then, shoot mine, which I did.
The Savage or Stevens are better guns. I believe the Marlin would also be a better gun, too, but have no experience with them.

Shows a lack of knowledge. Nothin' new. You seem to have a knack for claiming anyone stupid who says anything negative about your pet brand. The Remington 710/770 is the poorest quality rifle currently in production, and quite honestly it baffles me how anyone could recommend the POS.

seriously, stay away from the 710. That is unless you want to buy another rifle in 1 year when you realize there is so many better options in the same price point.
Take the Marlin XL7 for instance. Fantastic gun and you get it new for about $289. Stevens, Vangaurd, so many options for better rifles in that price. I have a one of the marlin XL7's and it's every bit as good a shooter as my Winny M70 if not better. It's smooth and quite a nice gun for the price. The 710 is what i call the BIC lighter of rifles. It's ugly, it's cheap and quite rough to operate. At least the couple i handled. Its kind of a joke for Remington to put their name on this gun to be honest when other smaller companies can produce bargain rifles that blow it away.

how cheap? .... seriously, when I said $100 ... that would be the max I'd spend on one .... $50-75 is more like it for me to own one. More than a c-note and I'm looking elsewhere.
I've actually walked into gun shops and seen them on the shelves for $350 used (when they sold new for $299)!!!! Go figure. Your being entirely too generous. I would give 50 cents for that glorified tomato stake

The Remington M710 and M770 deserve every negative thing said about them. Even on the cheap they are much too expensive for what you get.
Get a Weatherby, Savage, Marlin, or Stevens and never look back. Also look at used rifles.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.
