OK, things are a bit slow so let's see if we can invent something new to talk about.
I'm reasonably sure many of us here lust after guns we have no reasonable use for, but we REALLY want one anyway. A gun or cartridge that just turns our crank, intrigues our curiosity, or just seems utterly cool to hang on a sling and go walking through the woods with or lay down behind a sandbag and eliminate pests with or just fondle in our dreams? (sounds a little nasty, doesn't it?)
Here are my two picks for current lustings-
I've always wanted a Remington XP100- the old midgrip style with a custom piece of wood and a good EER 4x12 pistol scope for popping varmints. Never mind that I already own more than enough varmint eliminators- these things just look cool and are amazingly accurate. Imagine hanging one in a holster while walking through the woods trying to entice in a coyote, knock off a rockchuck, or raise heck with the varmint population.
My other pick is a Bushmaster AR in 223 for just plain high volume sage rat elimination and fun plinking. Hey, there has to be some value in shooting pop cans from 400 yards! The reported accuracy claims have me beyond intrigued- I've even been fondling a few at the gunshows, but the price tag has put me off for at least a few more months.
How about the rest of you guys? Maybe you'll have better self control than me and can keep the sexual innuendos out of your posts? Nah, what the heck- sexy guns are as good an excuse as any, right?- Let's here it!- - Sheister
Sheister. Yes, I've fought the battle of what I want vs. what I need for many years. I still do.
Right now, I'm arguing with myself over a .22-250 vs. a .243 predator rifle. What I really want is a used Ruger Mk.II SA. Then I can do the Pac-Nor/McM treatment. I do know that I can make a stock Ruger do.
I bought myself the latest Shotgun News. In it, somebody's selling reasonably good 98 Mausers converted to .308. Like $130. Put one in a McM stock, clean up the two stage trigger, and mount a scout scope. Maybe bob the barrel. A "knock around rifle". When it gets too "knocked around", just put another barreled action in the stock, and do the triggger and scope set-up.
And then there is that outfit in Texas that will make a Ruger Mini-14 into a tack driving varmit rifle. I can't buy an Ar-15 in Kalifornia.
Maybe I should take my Rem. 700 VSFS, and turn it into a 7 lb. .308 Mtn. Rifle. And take my 7.5 lb. M70 Win. and turn it into a 10 lb. Tactical Rifle. All it takes is money.
Then there is my yen for a classic .250-3000 M99 Savage. And a Marlin 336 in .25-35 Win.
A T/C Contender in .256 Win would be handy too.
Sigh. E
I've got this bug, to get a Ruger birdshead-grip bullseye. 3-3/4" barrel, .45 Colt cal. neat looking little gun... Also been daydreaming of a Rem. #7 chambered for .25-.223. Would have close to .250-3000 specs.... Should be a neat little all-around, do anything gun. good shootin, vbshootinrange.
Well my problem is a little different. I've already bought a few rifles that I wanted but don't need. Now I look at them and question their usefulness but just can't get rid of them.
The ones with an asterisk are the ones I really didn't need but got anyway.
30/30 lever*
35 lever*
300 sav. lever*
308 lever*
270 bolt*
7mag. bolt*
300win mag. semi-auto*
These are the ones I'll keep becasue I do need them,
358 lever
338-308 lever
7mm-08 bolt
338 bolt
But I still want a new 300WSM,and a 22-250 something.

If you ever stop wanting, maybe it's cause you're dead.
Want but don’t need? Geez, does this site have the bandwidth for that list?
Well, for starters:
Savage 12BVSS-S in .22-250. Just to see if those claims by Savage owners are true.
Marlin 1894 Cowboy in .45 Colt. Plinkin’ in style!
Another LH Win. Model 70 .375 H&H, solely for conversion to .416 Rem. Mag.
Ruger GP-100 4” barrel. Have a 20 year old 6” barreled S&W 586 so don’t need another .357. I’d be better off putting a 4” barrel on the Smith, but I love those Ruger grips and the overall handling of this piece.
Ruger #1 in some blaster caliber, maybe a .416 Rigby or .458 Lott. If I got the LH Model 70 this would be doubly not needed.
16 gauge Winchester Model 21, choked IC and Modified. You can substitute an L.C. Smith or original Parker or some such as long as it was a 16. Oh, and my own small (1000 acres or so) plantation in south Georgia filled with quail to go with it.
Back to the Ruger GP-100 with 4” barrel. Make that a 5 shot ala the Taurus Tracker in .41 Magnum or even better a .44 Special capable of 1250 fps loads and I’ll be first in line to buy it.
There’s a gun show in Boise in January, let me walk around there a bit and I can update this list with another dozen or more choices.
There has been a Ruger #1 in 375 H&H floating around the gunshows here for about $450.00! (sound tempting!!!!)

I yearn for a 7mm WSM! Because it just sounds BAAAAADDDD! And if it sounds bad! it's gotta be reeeeaaaaalllll GOOOOOOOOOD! So I want one!
The other I NEED is the new Kimber 84 in 243! I cannot live with out a 243!!!! My only 243 was stolen and my heart went with it! booo hooooo! and nothing heals the heart like a new gun!
An original Colt .45 "Peacemaker" in " as new" condition.
As long as we're including wants, make it under $1,000.
If I could find that kind of deal it would become an instant need instead of a want.
2D

this is an easy one T/C encore with every barrel ever made!
Sheister,
I've got both the mid-grip XP and the BushMaster, both are BETTER than billed, you'd not be disappointed in either.
I'm craving another mid-grip XP,with a 14",receiver diameter barrel in 223Ackley. Tuck it into a Woodland camo McMillan stock and the 4-12x you mention, with turrets.
I'd like a second identical one,in 250Ackley. A pard has one and it is fairly impressive(understatement).
I want a whole herd of 223Ackley's in every conceivable variation. Couldn't fathom enough of them,to say "I quit".
The 375Ultra is going to happen.
EVERYBODY needs at least one 243Ackley. Sign me up,to that plan,as well.
My current dilemna,is the HK91 Bug. It is as serious,as the AR-15 bug, with no known cure for either. I'd like to build a PSG-1 clone.
My personal Holy Grail,is an Ultra Light Arms 25-284. I am ashamed to admit I don't have one,as much as I lust after it. Just stupid,I guess?!?..........
Hey Stick. I'll take "Pinky" off your hands if you get the ULA .25-284. Being the nice guy I am. I'd hate to see it orphaned. E
E,
A most generous offer,but I'd hate to stick someone,with a lemon like that(grin)............
Want but don't need is it?
A Whitworth rifle
A Sharps in 50/110
A Remington Rolling Block in 43 Spanish.
Martini Henry 450/577.
You might guess I love to hear them big old black powder rifles go Whoooomp even if I hate to clean them.
A Spanish destroyer.
Swedish Lahti
Polish Radom
Japanese Type 26 carbine

Top of the list would be a Mark 19, with a Hummer to mount it on. Hooyah!!!
http://www.au.af.mil/au/awc/systems/dvic559.jpg
I can pretty much rationalize everything else, but then I'm sick. Sick sick sick...
Scott
I'm with Capt-e on this one. I've answered a similar question before and the first thing that always comes to mind is a Hummer with dual .50BMGs out the roof.
More civilized, I like the Kifaru Ramblin' Rifle with all the interchangable barrels.
Savage 12vbss would be good, don't have a varmit rifle yet.
Desert Eagle .44mag pistol just because.
Drop a Model 88 in 358 under the tree this year Santa, please!
A Quigley Sharps would be fun
and the old lever action shotgun, model 10? I think.
But, if you really pressed me, a fully accessorized Man from UNCLE P-38 would be the most fun.
Merry Christmas, hope Santa brings a boatload down the chimney.
Well it would be nice to have one of what everyone else is having, but what I really want and really don't need, is a double . Any make, British, German, American etc., as long as it is in .450 Nitro or bigger. (preferrably .470)
Any other caliber or type is possible by selling one or two existing rifles in the safe, but one of these babies would take a complete liquidation sale to aquire. I don't even know anyone who owns one, so the inheritance thing is out. Oh well, maybe I'll just take Stick's advice and AI my 243.
Here's a bit of my list:
Ruger #1 -- 3 or 4 of them.

I'm not as hard to please as the rest of you, but 2 that really stick out are:
1. An early Ruger #1S in 300Win with gorgeous walnut. I used to own this exact rifle, and after bedding it was a tackdriver. A friend talked me out of it, and he soon sold it. I've tried to find it, but have had no luck. I've got an eye out for it's twin.
2. A Pre-'64 M70 with a 25" fwt contour .25-06 barrel in a classic walnut stock. Throw on a Vari-X III 4.5-14X40 A/O matte with 4A reticle in Conetrol mounts, make it shoot 1/2" and I'd be a happy guy!
That's all I want for Christmas.
Sheister,
O well the season now fadding like the last sunset
as I waited for the buck to cross the saddle of the ridge,
The wind swireled around, the numb of cold not beyond the feet yet
and still I waited for a buck to cross the saddle of the ridge
The sun lowered its self below that empty ridge line
and now the cold was moving through out all my limbs
So as the last of the light faded I had to admit it was time
to leave that saddle of the ridge and head back to the inn.
This season ended with out a buck in the truck,
I just simply had the wrong kind of luck.
Now as I wait for the next one to come around
I try hard not to pout and frown
I read these message boards of others in withdrawal
hoping to hear soon the next season call
Instead I answear these post of what we spin in our mind
Just so to past the slow moving time.
What do I want? you ask... boy what a task...
How abouts a Model Seven in 7mm TCU, 18.5 inch tube, KS stock,
Now if Santa would only be kind enough to place one in the sock.
Merry Xmas.. and seasons greatings ...Pick...
Hey all,
I have no use for one, but I guess it would make a great companion piece to my 1895 Ltd. III .45-70.
A TROMIX .458 SOCOM.
It looks like sooooo much FUN!!! 1) Marlin 336 SS .30/30 (I like lever actions, and I like .30/30s and stainless is great)
2) Remington 700 Titanium in .30/06. (I don't really like what Remington has become, but the titanium intrigues me).

I typically find that want often turns to need, thus the purchase of building of said gun. When one of more gather dust in the rack, they make room for a new one.
In no paticular order:
A tricked out AR-15

Right now the most wanted but not needed is a 9.3x62 on a Springfield currently wearing a nicely blued military barrel. Then buy the Springfield in one of the local gun emporiums and replace the crappy barrel with the takeoff. Of course it would make more sense to rebarrel the one I have to buy, but that would not satisfy my needs. Little about this passion is logical except for the reloading sequence.
Well, yes ahum yep indeed.

Shiester: I've wanted a Marlin 45-70 for many years. When Marlin started building the guide gun, the desire increased. When Marlin started building the stainless guide gun, it has come to a near fever pitch! However, I'm a one gun hunter and I really don't need a specialized rifle. So, as much as it hurts, common sense (a disease which afflicts me seldom) takes control and I'll not buy the Marlin. -memtb
membth, following your conscience and using common sense is the shortest route to the downfall of our system as we know it today! Don't you know that as an American you are required to follow the lead of various pitchmen and "writers" to go out and buy everything new that comes out, in order to keep our American system of manufacturers, distributors, stores, and gunshow vendors from certain destitute status! [Linked Image]
Now go out and buy something you don't need today before the entire American system goes into a recession! Whoops, too late- now see what you've done? [Linked Image]- Sheister
