Currenlty I have a sako 30-378 and a heavy barreled 6mm-284.
Missing a sporter (or ultra light) rifle.

Which would you pick and why?

Sorry but I just have to....84L Montana in 280 AI or .270 would be the way I'd fly.

Dotz or M1 on top and rock and roll.

That or Tanners 25/06 that he has for sale in the classifieds..

I added a Mark V in .270 Wby Mag this year; sure like the idea of being able to hold dead on past 300yds with a 130G projectile. This one went down to a 130g spitzer at 200, went 30 yds before he realized he was dead.

The 257 with ttsx his allot harder then it should. Send the bullet off at ~3500fps and stuff doesn't stand much of a chance. Add to that mild, yet manageable recoil and you've got a he'll of a rifle.

My 14 (at the time) year old brother whacked a coues deer as well as a cow elk, and my buddies small framed daughter whacked a coues deer with our issue with mine. My rifle is ~8-8.5# before adding the bipod.

I had a 257 Weatherby for a bit. It shot well, but all I could think when I used it is that it was a lot longer, heavier, louder version of my 270 Winchester. So the 257 went down the road.

Blasphemy! REAL quarter-bore fans will tell you to take the .257 Wby and never look back. (OK, I will grudgingly admit that the 25-06 is a fine round, but for me, the .257 Wby will always be my top choice in quarter bores).

I went a step farther , i built myself a 25 STW.
The last two Elk with the Barnes 100 gr TXS , both dropped in their tracks. One at 500 plus yards and one at 465 Lasered . Plus i alos have both the 25-06 and 257 Ack .

Fotis,

I have experience with both and both are great carts. I'll probably get a ton of disagreement on this, but I firmly feel the 270 Wby kills with much more authority than the 257 Wby on medium size game(not considering CNS hits, which are a given). Feel the same when comparing the 25-06 to 270Win as well. The beauty of the 257 to me is the flat trajectory and light recoil. The 270Wby is flat as well, just not quite as much as the 257 for medium range shooting. That said, the 270 packs more mass and definitely delivers. The good thing about the 270 is you can bump to 140-150 premiums and chase the larger deer species without much worry of being undergunned. Not that a 257 is not up to the task, but I'll take a good 150 on a bull's shoulder any day over a 115.

It would boil down to what I intended to hunt with the rig. If a good bit of larger game may be in the mix, the 270Wby would get the nod between the two.

They are both outstanding carts IMO.

Fotis, from one E7 to another,,,go with Roy's 257....maybe in the new style Vanguard,,,,it will do what ever you need, if not you have the 30-378 as a back up gun.

I read Bob Hagel when I was younger and he liked the 270 B so eventually I had one. It is a laser, as is the 257, but the 270 is with heavier bullets and not much more recoil, but I..
doubt you can go wrong.

A little off topic but,
Thought that might get a rise, most people do not realize how light the Weatherby 6 lug standard actions are, now the magnum laying on the buck above with a 26" #2(?) contour barrel; thats a different deal. The stock carbine w/ tupperware is just over 6 lbs and the Sako Classic is a very sleek/slim stock. I love my 5 sako's; but would not trade this one for a Finnlight and thats what I was looking for when I found it,I now have 3 Weatherby's. Basic synthetic Mark V's are a steal on the used market. I bought the 270 mag above w/ plans to resell, but the first group was .68". Had it cerakoted Blue Titanium dropped in a McMillan MK V stock and its a looker, shooter and a keeper. On topic, big vote for .270wby, the caliber, and Weatherby rifles.

Fotis, buy both and kill lots of critters. Problem solved.
Posted By: Otter6 Re: 257 vs 270 wby? - 03/13/13
Never had a 257 B,but I had a 270 and it was a killing machine. Deer anyway. Easy to work up loads for,and pleasant to shoot too. Mine was a M70 Sporter and just plain shot well. I started with the 130gr slugs and soon made the switch to the 150s. Under 250yds the 130 was just too messy. Little sticks of dynamite. I will say the deer didn't have any trouble expiring. I'd like to have another on a M700 action with a 26" pipe nestled in a McMillan Remington Sportet.

Firstcoues,
Man, you got to stay out of the local zoo.

I never had a .257 Bee, but I absolutely love my .270 Weatherby! I've made my longest kill with it (a modest 420 yards, no where near as far as some of you guys are shooting!). I've used it for ground hogs, coyote, white tails, and mule deer, it has performed well on all of them, with both 130-grain and 150-grain bullets. Put one behind a deer's shoulder and it won't go anywhere but two feet straight down, at least that's been my experience.

I've always been intrigued by the .257 and will have to look into one of them some day, but with my .270, I'm in no real hurry and don't think I would be gaining anything extra...but that won't stop me anyway! laugh

I have both. The 257 is a wicked little number, but since you already have a 6-284, the 257 would be too much overlap. The 270 Roy would fit in the middle quite nicely. A 130 gr bullet hiked out of a 270 at 3450 makes for some pretty spectacular kills.

Let me know if you want to sell that one.

Your .257 WBY is happy in it's new home but could use a companion.

Haven't had a .270 Wby but did have a .257 for a while. Amazing cartridge. Accurate and stretched string flat. Absolutely electrocutes critters. Fairly easy to toast a barrel though, if you're not careful...

John

Actually, a male baboon skull was a trophy I really wanted but only heard them in the bush and saw only one perched on a fence post like a bird--couldn't have been very comfortable grin and wished I'd have tried to get a photo.
Posted By: BobinNH Re: 257 vs 270 wby? - 03/15/13
George I hear they are pretty abundant....like varmints grin

Yea, the very nice guy who took my wife and I on a two-day tour of Etosha National Park was also a rancher with a remote and large ranch. He said they are incredibly destructive and almost guileful and purposeful about it. On asking him what he meant by guileful, he commented they'll literally wreck something and then seemingly get in line and then _ _ _ _ on it.

And yet he said he had trouble shooting them, replacing, fixing fences and electrical work all of which, he said, is almost a full time job.

Got to love those canines in a big male, the reason I always thought a skull would be interesting trophy.

Apologies for the distraction here. Never have had a 257 B but really liked the 270.
Posted By: AussieGunWriter Re: 257 vs 270 wby? - 03/19/13
Fotis,
If you were the type to worry about barrel life, and I don't believe you are, the larger bore with the same case is the better option, but then too, would be the 7mm Weatherby.

But, I killed several hundred animals with the .257 and loaded for 4 or 5 over about 35 years, also having the opportunity to compare it to cartridges either side of it.

For the medium sized animals I shot, the .257 killed faster, at further ranges more consistently than the .243 on the lower side and the .270 and 7mm Remington on the higher end.

Now.....the .270 Weatherby, I found killed a tad better only after a lot of animals were dropped and the averages considered. After making the previous statements about the 7mm Remington, I concluded that the reason for the more dynamic kills stemmed from the bullet choices I made considering that the .270 caliber bullets of cup and core design I used in the 80's were designed for the standard .270 Winchester.

The end result was that because most .270 bullets were/are designed for deer hunters, they opened a little more violently at the faster velocity and demonstrated what the .270 does at 100 yards at 2 or 3 times that distance.

Because this is not the 80's, my experience is out of date as the premium bullets of today change everything. My opinion now is that very few hunters would notice any difference between all the cartridges commented above if like premium bullets were handloaded.

The short answer is, if you haven't owned a .257, you "need" one. If you have travelled that road, get the .270 version.

Feel better now?
Posted By: AussieGunWriter Re: 257 vs 270 wby? - 03/19/13
PS. Roy Snr liked the 87gn Hornady in the .257 and I used it a lot and found it the fastest of the fast killers for lung shot deer sized game.

Your mileage won't vary at all.

Exactly, I have a NULA in .257 B and a LW 700 I built in .270B

Have taken 1 cow elk and some deer with the .257...and it worked great. I will be using it this year on deer and antelope.

Taken a bunch of stuff with the .270B from moose on down. All with 130 gr bullets. A hammer and prolly my favorite rifle, if there is such a thing. wink
