I'm thinking of sending in my McMillan stock to shave off 1/2" length of pull. It's 13.5" now but I feel like I stretch to get where I want to be. I'm 5' 7 1/2" tall. My inside arm to my knuckle joint is 13" to 13.125" I have a compact with 13" lop in 7mm-08 and it feels great hunting but too short at the range. The 13.5" McMillan feels good on range bench but too long hunting I think.

What are you shorter guys hunting rigs length of pull?
I'm 5'8", sleeve length 32". 13" is ideal for me. 13.5" is slightly long, but I get by with it.

stocks are weird things, sometimes the reach to the trigger from the grip is a bigger issue for me than the LOP.

despite what anyone says, heavy clothing DOES make a difference too. a stock that fits me w/ a tshirt on during the summer, might be too long hunting with my wool coat on during the winter.
I'm 5'9'' and 13 3/8'' feels perfect to me. Factory 13 1/2'' feels just a hair to long and I had one McMillan that was 13 1/4'' that felt a hair short. 1/8'' shouldn't make that much difference, but it can.
Most are 12.5" but my best fitting winter rifle is 12 have always been an odd duck
Now 12" would be way short for me but I think 13" is what I need.
I have no issues with my marlin lever gun but the scope eye relief and rifle fit is less fitting than an open sight gun for me.
I'm 5'10", stocky, James Tucker measured me at SCI this past weekend. LOP was 13 7/8" with a GRIP LENGTH of 3.5". He explained that LOP is a function of the grip length which is driven by how open or closed the grip is (how much it angles down vs back). Please don't take my explanation as his words - he's a master, I'm just attempting to parrot what I learned.

However, that number fit what I had figured out from trying different rifles. Brian from Echols looked at a rifle I was holding a few SCI's ago and figured I was 13.75.

Other guideline is having a couple of inches between your nose and the thumb of your trigger finger.
I use 14.0 for most of my guns though I have Mickey's from 13.75-14.25.......
12.75in for a GP rifle. 13in for one mostly used prone, as you head tilts farther forward in the prone.

I often look at where many posters here have their scopes mounted and I can tell their stocks are WAY too damn long for them.
Most everything is standard 13.5", but I did cut one at 13 1/8" with pad installed and have used it as a youth rifle. I have probably killed more deer/coyotes with it then any other rifle I own. When hunting in weather, it just feels/fits right
Set it for hunting. A little short beats too long when things happen quick.
I'm a hair under 5-10 and the standard 13.5" seems to work, but anything longer feels too long. I have a custom walnut stock for a Win 70 I picked up at a gun show recently that is 13-3/8" and feels perfect, but haven't shot it or had a barreled action in it yet.
I'm 6'1" and stocky and I had my last McMillan made to 13.75" LOP.
I am 6'6" and 250lbs and 14.5" is just about right on most my rifles.
I'm 5-11 and my McMillan KS is 13.75. Seems perfect..
6'-0", 230lbs, 13.5" max for me. 13.0" is fine for hunting. Especially with winter clothing... I can manage 12.5" youth stocks with a decent scope with good eye relief... F

I'm 5' 10" and wear a 34-35" dress shirt. Wide shoulders. Factory standard stocks are mostly fine. I do have a custom Mauser that is a little shorter, and another Mauser that was padded an inch short. Both work great as hunters. Plenty of scope adjustment - fore and aft - on both. Really work great wearing cooler weather clothing. I tend to like rifles and shotguns with some cast off.

I'm 5'8" and 13 1/8 fits me perfectly with my hunting jacket on.
Best for me is 13 3/4" and I am 5' 11" with a normal torso.

I just ordered a Mickey edge with 13.0" LOP + 1" decel pad for my M70 classic.

I agonized over this for quite a while and almost changed my order, but no . . .

All my 13.5" LOPs just seem too long for me and I'm not a small dude. As someone else who frequents here said: "It's always easier to add back LOP than to lop it off" cool

And I have to ask: if you were blindfolded and handed rifles in stocks, could you really tell the difference between 1/8" LOP?
I'm sending in my 13.5" McMillan and have it cut to 13" next week. Thanks for the input on what works for you guys.
It is a very personal thing. I have a friend, we are built for all intents and purposes exactly alike. I'm 5'11" with 35" sleeves. I like a 14.5" LOP, he likes 12.5". Go figure.

I find that often, people try to correct a stock with a change in LOP when in reality the deficiency lies elsewhere in the stock design.

In the end, whatever feels best for you for the conditions you shoot in is what I'd recommend.

Same for me. That's the LOP I specify on hunting rifles. Varmint rifles are okay at 13 1/4 to 13 3/8. The hunting rifles sometimes feel a touch too short in a t-shirt, but they are quick to get in position, better than too long.

The best fit I've ever found is a 13 1/8" Mountain Rifle pattern McMillan and Leupold DD Low mounts. Like it was made for me, from the small diameter closed grip, to the cheekpiece, to the way the forend fits my hand.
I am 5'8". My LOP's are 13.5" or less. My best fit is my Encore at something less than 13.5". It shoulders like an MP5. That rig is all business.
I'm 6 2.5", Lop Is 13.75
The 13 3/8" factory pull on some Rem & Wby rifles feels OK, but when I have a pad installed I will go with 13 1/4" which is sweet for me.
Many people don't think stock fit is all that important on a rifle and it isn't if all of your shooting is done with lots of time to get settled into the stock. But if your hunting sometimes involves quick shooting a well fitted stock makes all the difference in the world.
If you have a gunsmith in your area that fits shotguns for trap or skeet or does custom rifle stocks who has a try gun, go see him and you will not be disappointed. A few minor adjustments on a standard stock can make all the difference and it does have to be a full on custom job.
It's not just a matter of height that determines LOP, but a combination of things. A person's muscle build, neck length, cheekbone structure, shoulder shape, etc., may all contribute to how they shoulder a rifle, and what works best for a LOP.

For example, I'm 5' 11" and about 165. I have a skinny neck, and really crawl a stock. On top of that, I really prefer a light hold on a rifle. Thus, I will sometimes scope myself with a 13 3/8-13 1/2" LOP on a rifle recoiling much harder than a 243 in a sporter weight rifle. I like more like 13 7/8-14" for a hunting rifle.

FWIW, I've never understood the shorter LOP for cold weather argument. I measured the compressed thickness of the bulkiest clothing I would wear in cold weather, and it came out to something like 3/16". Thus, not enough to worry about. If one were worried about shouldering the rifle with bulky clothes, a shorter LOP really doesn't help either, unless it's like 2" shorter.

Yep, yep, & yep. I'm 5'10" 32" sleeves' and my BEST fitting, most comfortable rifles have 13 5/8" LOP. Anything less to TOO SHORT for me. 14" or more is TOO LONG.

I'd take too short over too long.
