Ruger decided to make their busch league rifle with threaded barrels so I opted to try one in the name of practicality and science.
First impressions are:
Stock is an UBER piece of schit. The slightest flexing while the bipod is attached results in the plastic touching all sorts of schit I'd prefer it not touch.
Trigger is ok. But not as good as a Timney/Shilen/re-touched Remmy, etc IMO.
It does shoot UBER well with a variety of loads.
1" dots. Loads range from 1,000fps to 3,250fps.
These are sub-sonic 50gr V-Maxes and they appear to be wobbly. But still shot good enough.
50gr. V-Maxes clockin' 3,200ish.
Everything has been shot suppressed. Groups to the 300yd line have been well under MOA with two different loads. Neither of which have been developed for the rifle.
Just scoped the wife's RAR .223 tonight. Was gonna be my truck gun but she quickly laid claim to it. Looking forward to shooting it tomorrow. Would be UBER cool if it shoots the same stuff I run through the AR (25gr Tac behind 68gr Hornady BTHP) acceptably well. Couldn't find any 75gr Amaxes yet so have a bunch of the 75gr BTHPs to try also.
Agree with you on the stock. Hope it shoots well in spite of it. Already emailed B&C encouraging them to pony up

I have the standard compact. Shoots just fine for a $350 rifle. Stock isn't pretty, but works. I can't see replacing it though. It would be easy to quickly turn a $350 budget rifle into a $600 budget rifle that doesn't shoot a bit better.

Yeah, I wouldn't put any more money into one.
I mainly bought this one just to have a bolt gun to try some sub-sonic stuff. The can was previously on my AR.
When I'm done with load work I'll probably sell it and rebarrel a real rifle to suit my needs.
I have 3 of the RAR 223's. They all shoot the 75's extremely well. They all have their own load preference, but keeping 5 under an inch at 200 is common.
They're on the cheap side, but they shoot as well or better than any factory rifle I've ever owned.

This was plunking three under an inch at those distances yesterday.

I bet it shoots everything well.
Travis
If only that were the case
+/- 3" groups with everything I ran through it, mostly n the vertical. Firing pin hole definitely needs bushed. Cratered with everything, even mild loads and punched the primers on one of the heavier loads. Magazine box can't bind. Scope base holes cannot press on the barrel. Scope bases were torqued with Borka torque wrench as were rings, ring caps and action screws. The only thing I can figure may be the limber stock and semi-hard rest. Put a knit cap on top of the rest to soften things up but did not help any.

What about headspace? Lots of possibilities here.
Just out of curiosity, have you measured the distance to the lands with several bullets? The RAR's have pretty short throats, which can be a good thing.
And rattle can artistry can be had relatively cheaply..
I don't want to cover up the stickers.
Travis
Dipschitt..We rattle can the stock, cover the Ruger stickers and add stiffness to it when the paint dries. The web spray further solidifies the stock, THEN you put a new 'UBER' sticker over the top of it all. Sheesh.
Then you'll be fit to run with the best white trash around.

I could probably make some titanium inletting rods, to stiffen the forend. They'd be Uber priced
But wait - a better idea - I think Gorilla makes Gorilla camo Uber duct tape. That would also stiffen the stock...

Don't have headspace gages but did check brass growth at the shoulder after firing. Almost no growth. Checked distance to lands with 68gr Hornady BTHP and 75gr both. Loaded both just to kiss the lands. Attempted the KFPRO method, but nothing came together. My AR put 10 of the same load in about 1 MOA. For sure though, I get higher velocities from the 18" Ruger than the 18" AR.
Firing pin hole is obviously oversized. Cratering even with loads pushing 68s at < 2700 Tempted to send to Gretan but should probably just send back to Ruger.

Travis; I hope this finds you and yours well on this wet and stormy night - not to be confused with a dark and stormy night.....
Somehow because of all the Campfire coolaid being spread about the Ruger Americans I've ended up with one.
I should add the standard Canuck pricing and availability complaint here in that I found all of 3 dealers with one chambered in .223 in stock up here - just the plain vanilla RAR too, no shorty, no Predator.
Anyway, I've got a fair bit - 3lb maybe? - of WC845, and a fresh can each of Varget and RL15 along with enough small rifle primers and cleaned up once fired military cases to load something.
I've got a couple hundred 60gr HP that I was going to start with and intend to see if anyone up here has anything heavier, but am not holding my breath.
Anyway Travis, if you or anyone has any suggested loads for the ber RAR with the powders I've got I'd love to hear them.
Thanks in advance and happy ber Thursday to you and yours too.
Travis; Thanks for the load suggestions, I'll give it a whirl for sure and see how it does.
I've shot a bit of the WC845 in the .30-30 so I know it burns and all that, so I'll try some of that over the chronograph with the 60 grainers too.
There are somewhere ensconced in my reloading room shelves, a box of 60gr Partusions and some sort of TSX's too - 53's I'd say without looking right now.
They might be tried out too just because.
Mainly I picked this thing up to shoot at far away rocks and to have a cheap to shoot/light recoiling/fun rifle for new shooters to try out.
I've got an ancient 1:14 .22-250AI with a 26" #4 Douglas Premium match barrel that shoots quite well, but a lot of new shooters find it's way to heavy for them and well frankly it is a pretty heavy coyote rifle all things considered.
On the low-income wildlife hunt though you've got me thinking as our family tries to shoot at least one "really local" mulie buck every fall.
Since I had to pay more for the rifle up here across the medicine line, do you think it'd be OK using a clunker in a sort of middle class/blue collar farming/vineyard sort of neighborhood?
Any suggestions on where I might search out the complete rules on the 'net?
Being a Canuck I don't want to offend anyone - naturally - and of course I'm sorry if I have....
As always I'll save you a seat near the back Travis.
I think if Flave Precision provided their services for "chopping" the .223 RAR down to a shawty, you would no longer think it was a clunker, but suddenly a sexy beast. youd need to ship a 12 pack with it though to be drankened prior to the beholder eyeballing it. i promise youll think the shawty is hot after youre drunk.
n8dawg6; I do believe you're correct sir, but sadly Flave hasn't been elected President yet and that invisible, yet omnipotent medicine line keeps me from sending either clunkers or beer over to Havre.
The other thing that might prevent it is that our eldest daughter seems to think it might be hers - if I can get it to shoot OK first. Kids, eh?
All the best to you for the remainder of the week sir - may it be an ber one indeed.

BC: Flave Precision may do well to open a Canadian office. it can be stocked with Molson

on the one RAR I've played with, a good coat of spray paint would stiffen the stock a lot...
Seems to be a lot of want here to stiffen the stock. I'm thinking those little blue pills will work for most of yus. But for the peasant rifle project (PRP) I really do dig the idea of use what's laying around and what's laying around up here in Canaduh is a lot of broken hockey sticks the ditches are littered with them. I'm thinking lag bolt a select chunk of hockey stick handle underneath the forearm. Not some kind of bad bubba show, show a little pride, countersink the bolts nicely inside the forearm lest they rub on the meddle and coz akerasy problems. Then hit the whole shebang with flat mat desert brown tacitcool krylon. Or spend a little more if you have it and get ingwe to do his magic for final finish of the PRP
Just reverse the "re" at the end of a Canuk word to "er".... And refer to fluids by the Imperial Gallon. That'll solve many of your translation issues.
N.B. Try to avoid Canadian French Fries.
N.B. #2 When Canuks refer to "Timmy's", it's not about the kid from the Lassie show.
I dreamt of Flave Precision last night.and one client was trying to sell US a rifle. A model 20 from Howa, built in Belgium, in .229 Calibre. Said he had personally chronoed it at 10,000fps.
Reminded me of the stories I used to hear behind the gun counter.
I used Flave's Visa card to buy the gun for 1.2 million.

WTF are you doing up this late in the day?

Call Shari when this happens in the future. Tell her she needs to put Ingwe down for his nap, he's getting fussy
She throws a stick of butter (from my fridge) into a frypan on the stove (my pan, my stove) and then she empties half a bag of those little tater pillow shapes into the pan and literally boils them in butter.
Then she eats em all and leaves the pan on the stove, fridge door open, butter splattered everywhere and she'll go sit in my spot on the couch and change the tv channel from fox news to the homo remodeling show on HDTV.....
This thread needs a program I didn't see one at the door you guys lost me I've SAF never heard of a gay Polack peasant?! I'm sure there's gay Polacks and Polack peasants but gays move to the city and get rich this just don't add up at all.
Travis; Greetings and salivations my southern friend, I trust things are - well ber down there at 'Flave Precision and that this finds your family well too of course.
I thought I'd give you the short version of the report on what I believe is one of the first RPR's - Ruger Peasant Rifle - to make it north of the medicine line.
So to be clear to all here Travis, I DID NOT begin at the beginning with this rifle as I typically do. In an effort to see what it would do "out of the box", the only thing I did was reduce the trigger pull down to a bit over 3lbs - all it would let me - and mount a 6X Leupold that was laying about in the safe.
The fore end is pushing against the barrel with a modicum of enthusiasm and I really should have pulled out the rasp before shooting it - but did not.
Anyway it really doesn't love the only factory ammo that I found in the safe, the old white box 1988 vintage Olin 55gr ball. It chronographed out at 3320fps, but would only put 3 into 2" at 100yds.
The load of 26gr of Varget with Remington primers and 60gr Mystery HP loaded to a COL of 2.272" so they'd fit in the magazine went into 1 1/16" and averaged 2910fps.
As mentioned I was playing with some WC845 I've got and a load of 22gr of it shot best going into 11/16" but only making 2700fps.
The really bright spot in the day however was some previous shooter donated about 180 once fired 5.56/.223 brass into the brass pail - along with a smattering of .308, 9mm and weird for up here .30 Carbine.
Oh, there were also five 7.5x55 Swiss brass in there too???
Anyway Travis, that's the RPR report from the northern front for this evening.
I'm going to take a rasp to the stock, perhaps even the inside as Mule Deer suggests, and see if I can locate some projectiles that have a known lineage rather than the Mystery 60gr HP.
The thing is begging for one of those magazine ends the 'Fire member is making too, as it doesn't appear I'm anywhere too close to the lands in order to fit the magazine.
Have a great weekend Travis and all the best to you and your fine family. ber weekend I should have said - sorry.
It sounds as things are uber up north and congrats on the RPR!
I see you have Varget on hand and I tend to use a bit of it too. I bought my son a stainless compact RPR and am currently shooting up ammo loaded for other 223's gone bye (I tend to go through a few). I found a box of 50 in the closet that melded well with his chamber, so gave them a go. The rounds are loaded with the 55 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip over 25 grains of Varget. COAL is 2.255" and that's about .020" off the lands. His rifle typically keeps three well under MOA at 100 with this load. It really likes the 75 A-Max over Varget too. I think you'll find you can regulate jump with many bullets, as the three RPR's we have at the house have shortish throats. Anyway, good luck with the rifle!
Here's a nice pic of his rifle. I've been grabbing it first as of late. It came in handy dispatching one of our many resident groundhogs.
shortactionsmoker; Thanks so much for the fine photo and load info sir, I do appreciate it very much.
Somewhere in the dim past I loaded a wee bit for a Mini 14 in .223- well and a Mini 30 too, but this is the first rifle in this chambering I've actually owned. Somehow the .22-250AI got the nod when I was considering a .224" centerfire.
As it stands now, even at our inflated Canuck pricing the somewhat homely rifle was a bargain and with all the Campfire Kool Aid being poured about how they shoot I poured a tall glass and drank deeply.
We're overrun in our part of BC lately with our resident breed of your groundhog's cousin, the Yellow Bellied Marmot - but of course in their infinite wisdom the government outlawed shooting them on Crown land decades back when they were more scarce.
The local vineyards, orchards and hay ranchers can legally shoot them on their land, but of course the marmots tend to overpopulate the areas where they don't get the treatment from the varminteers. Ah well, such is life I'm thinking.
Thanks again for the load data and shout out sir. All the best to you and yours this weekend.
Im headed to the Great White North in a few days. Im thinking Kokanee, Molson Golden, and Labatts.
Don't forget the moosehead. It's Canadian heineken
Dave; Good morning to you sir, I hope this finds you and your fine family well. It's been too long since I've said hello to you, though I've been following your new shop's progress and wish you the best with it and the accompanying venture.
On the Moosehead comment, I think you're really on the money with your comparison to Heineken.
I don't take in a large quantity of suds typically and then only in summer, but don't mind a cold one when the outside temps here climb into the low 100's.
Anyway this year I've found that Moosehead is my current favorite - for my taste buds anyway Dave - and it's replaced Stella Artois for that position, but as I recall Heineken would be similar flavor too.
All the best to you and your fine family again Dave.
ingwe; Good day to you sir, I trust other than being without the product brewed in St. John since 1918 that you're all doing well.
As you likely already know, our liquor laws are silly beyond reason, so you might be able to find Moosehead everywhere in Alberta like you can here in BC - or you might not.....
Have a grand trip either way ingwe. I look forward to seeing some photos of your adventures.
We will be shopping for Moosehead in AB for surealong with Cattle Boys BBQ sauce and some kind of candy bar my wife says is the best in the world. Hoping the Taber corn is ripe and ready! Its the best Ive ever had!

Dwayne man!
Spent all morning "buckin' bales" for some goddamm farmers. Farmers are a lot like Christians. Always askin' for somethin'. Present company excluded of course.
Mini-'flavette had fun though. She piloted the big rig while we policed up "stupid squares." Not a bad morning.
I've found that no matter what bullet I feed this thing, it shoots well.
But it is still a janky POS in my opinion. And I find the detachable mag annoying.
For those that haven't purchased one, this is what I'm referencing when I talk about the stock. UBER janky!
That video was with very mild back and forth from my dickbeater.
No flies on the rifle overall though. It shoots like a sumbitch.
Put another 50 through it and it was MOA all the way to the 500 this afternoon.
I hope your daughter likes it. If she doesn't, tell her tough schit and enjoy it anyway.
Travis
PS- Take my parenting advice with a grain of salt. My daughter doesn't like me much...
Travis; Thanks for the stupid square report and accompanying photographic evidence of your daughter's displeasure with you. She looks absolutely mortified to be there sir.
If memory serves, my first time behind the wheel was either piloting a bale truck or a grain truck - can't recall which anymore.
It's good to see there's some timeless training methods amongst the farmers no matter which side of the medicine line they are found. That said Travis and as mentioned previously, Mom's roots are from a stone's throw north of Havre so maybe it's a genetic thing with me that I understand those folks.
My goodness I'm with you on the floopy stock too Travis, though I must admit I'm already cogitating a paint scheme for it...
Hey part of the reason I bought the rifle was that I had dies and brass for it already, so that's pretty typical of the symptomatic loonyism I suffer from.
What do you make of the 5 rounds of 7.5x55 Swiss brass I found in the batch Travis? Swiss subversives practicing here in the borderlands for an incursion southward?
Typically Swiss, they only needed 5 rounds to ensure zero on their rifles - likely 10 of them I'm guessing.....
Have a good Saturday evening Travis, it's always a pleasure exchanging pleasantries with you.
The mini-'flavette is a sweetheart, as long as she is in front of you. Watch your back with that one.... She has a smile that warms but she is cold as ice. Not kidding either. That girl is a little mean.
Not sure what to make of the 7.5 whatever, but I know I don't care for foreigners and anything labeled "Swiss" belongs in the trash. Unless of course she agrees with everything I say, then that rule might could be done away with.
I always buy donuts for the kiddos on Sunday morning, but right after that, I'll make my way to church.

Anybody think of a decent way to stiffen up that stock? Outside of death or viagra??
