Just like yer woman, "I like it when you pull my ears".....grin
Lol!
You still shooting that Ruger .17 Hornet much? Love my Ruger .22 Hornet and can't think of a better way to start the New Year than putting some fur on the ground with it this morning!
Yep. That IS a good start. Now let's see ya keep it up all year long.
That's the part I have trouble with ... sure wish I had more varmints or critters to chase on my home place but I sure do enjoy when the oppurtunity arises!
Brought my good luck charm today and it worked. Of course I told my daughter to watch the left and bump me when she sees something. 30 seconds into the call I catch something in the corner of my eye. Coyote 20 yards from me running. I had the bolt gun in my hand. Glad I switched to the AR.
Snipepod. They are jointed and fold up or you can leave them full length when things look "gamey" and you need a quick rest. They don't weigh much, (maybe 4-6 oz?) and can be folded up to about 6-7" long for pocket carry.
Dandy looking coyote hunterjrg. Good on you for bringing the young'un along also!
Thanks Lonny She's always up to go hunting with me. Probably more so than my son. He seems to be more of a shooter than a hunter so far although he loves his duck hunting.
Now you have a new picture to replace the one on the school's web site.
That would cause those liberals more hand wringing than they could handle.
Any luck on the cats with the colder weather moving through?
I took a long walk the other day through some country that used to always have bobcats in it and I didn't even cut a track on snow that was 3-4 days old. I would have bet my rifle I would find tracks, but not a thing...
Any luck on the cats with the colder weather moving through?
Not even a sniff. We finally got an inch or two of snow today so I'll be out early with the dog looking for trax tomorrow.
I've had some Coyotes hitting that Deer Carcass so I set a couple snares but with out snow I'm just guessing where they're coming in from. If they're back tonight the new snow'll help me sort that out so I just might get my first snared Coyote after all.
Didn't kill anything in '15 yet. Went out today, was a bit of a cold bish, wasn't bad till the wind started. Called one in, but he busted me and I didn't get a shot till he was waaay out. FWIW my son is in his great-grandfather's Woolrich's. By the time I got them the pants never fit, but I wore the jacket a great deal when I was younger. Pretty neat to see him out in them today.
Gruff, good luck in the next hunt.. Coyotes pretty scarce around this area, but the rabbits are pretty plentiful.. Have a good New Year, and lots of luck..
I don't have as many rabbits this year. But tonight I was in my jammies and needed another armload of wood. Have a couple mineral tubs of wood on the porch, and stepped out to grab some. A big ol' jack ran down the hill in front of the house. So I exchanged the wood for the Whore-gnat and slippers for pacs, and went back out. Fresh snow and a bright moon equals no spotlight needed. They run up the ditch about 100 yds and stopped. I popped the closer one using the deck post as a rest. The second silly bastid ran back to his buddy. Thee end.....

Thank you, same to you! Plenty of dogs around here this year seems anyways.
You guys ever ate jackrabbit? I was always told leave the jacks where they die and take the cotton tails home for the pot
In Eastern WA we liked to eat young jacks about the size of a cottontail or smaller. They were tender and tasty with a slight sage taste. Full grown jackrabbits were tough and tasted of sage so strongly we only tried eating one or two.
They were long legged, long eared critters that did not turn white in winter and looked like the ones huntsman22 is posting.
Is this a big year in rabbit cycle all over? There were the most snowshoe hares I've ever seen in the places where I hunted mule deer in the Interior of BC this Fall.
22, not that I know of.. I used these for coyote bait.. Planned to give them to the local taxidermist for jackalopes, but the .22 mag. tore them up too much..
Had a cat step on the jaw of a coyote/cat set today, and stick his nose in the dirt hole.. The set is now heavily blocked, exposed, and has a flag hanging.. Next time he works that set, I should have him.. It was bad too, because I cut his tracks and saw them headed right for my set, then, nothing...
Got out to check snares today. Been a rough week of getting around to check them down here. Have had 40 mph winds and snowing making getting around tough. First snare of the day I walked up to a VERY alive badger. Snow had filled in the cow trail enough to where the badger got neck snared but got one leg through the loop. You might know a badger can move a lot of dirt when caught in a trap, well they can move a schit ton when they are caught in a 10' snare.
Rest of the morning was a lot of hoofing it into snaring spots from the trails being to full of snow. I almost decided to go back and get one of my mules to ride and check snares but decided to just man up and throw the pack on and go. Ended up having an alright day. Found some fresh bobcat tracks so hoping to get lucky and put a loop around one of them.
Me and a work buddy got it done this morning. Coyotes were responding well today. Called one in on the 1st stand of the morning and it decided to not commit and it slipped through the cracks. Oh well ... picked up and hurried to our next stop. 2nd stand of the morning we called this young girl in with our hand calls. Started with ecaller but switched over to the hand calls and she quickly popped out of the timber presenting a shot for my 204. Bang Flop ... end of story! I don't know what it is but coyotes always seem to get my blood pumping. Good times!
Fieldgrade rodents chewed on her leg under the snow drift. She's the one pictured hanging from the old cedar tree
Yea,,, I was pretty sure they were one and the same. Dam rodents. Good thing there's not allot of value in that part of the leg. I know they give a price for the lot but for curiosity's sake, ask your fur buyer what the stand alone price would be for that one when you sell.

Will do. Probably won't sell again till middle of February. She will be easy to tell when I sell unless I get a few more like her which I'm hoping for
My son's little trap line around the house is still producing fur on a fairly regular basis. It's to bad we don't have any nice high dollar pales around here but he's still happy to catch them.
He had Rebel along when he ran the line this morning.
Nice critters guys... wille, tell your son congrats for me.
Will do, thanks. We were checking out your cat set pics. We have called in a few around but he hasn't caught one yet, he's made that one of his goals for the season.
Just talked to a guy that got $35 for whole, unskinned yotes this weekend.
Unfortunately my son will be lucky to get $25 for his coyotes finished.
My hat's off to him no matter the price. A lot of grown men who use that old "our Coyotes ain't worth skinning" excuse to kick em in the ditch could learn a thing or two from your boy.

I agree 100%.. Besides, putting up the fur is fun.
I skin the face out like that and then when I pull hide off the normal way once I get to the ears I work a screwdriver between cartilage and head and just pull and it does it perfect. I used to cut cartilage when skinning head and then pull it out with pliers but this is faster and easier
Thanks for all the kind comments about the fox.. One ranch always has some, but I don't always get a chance when the fur is good, or else I don't have a small rifle to take the fox.. Worked out this time. Lots of fine photos and information on this thread.. One of my favorites. Thanks.
Field, I bought this Hornet 20 years ago this year.. Have used it a bunch.. Shot everything from gophers, tree squirrel, grouse, chucks up to turkey & whitetails.. A great little caliber for the woodsloafer or just a casual hike in the hills.

It is the old model. I had to put those ivory grips on it because I broke so many sets of grips when I threw the gun at the target. The great thing about Rugers, is it's like owning a seven shot revolver. You miss with the six in the cylinder and then you throw the gun for the seventh shot...

Yes, I know. You've thrown it at me multiple times.
Nash says thanks guys.. I sold some coyotes in town today, there was a guy at the buyer's with about an 18' trailer mounded up with whole coyotes. I'd say there were about 150-200. It was a beautiful sight...
Heard there is a guy out of Winnett,MT paying $3 for jackrabbits (don't know if its true or not). Could make some alright money this year on those things as they are thick as fleas down here.

Yeah that's Joe Jassak, who I sold to today.. If there were very many jacks around here, I'd be shooting them like crazy. Saw one on the way home, but he was too jumpy to get a shot on.
What would a fur company use jacks for? Just curious. Saw a flyer in a gas station in SD last month that announced the local fur buyer would be buying jacks this winter. Couldn't come up with anything offhand I had heard of being made of jackrabbit hide.

The guy here is either making jackalopes himself, or selling is them to a taxidermist for jackalopes, I'm not sure which.
Schools were closed yesterday, I had to work but my son went rabbit hunting with a couple of my retired friends. The dogs did a great and so did the shooters!
Man Ben you guys are knockin the cats dead. How many does that make this year? You guys are making me want to get some cat sets out.
I've just got one so far, and Nash now has two... They sure are fun, and a nice payday.... However I heard they're down right now, but hopefully will be going back up towards the end of Feb.
Beautiful dog..!!! Had a chance one time to get a beautiful little cur dog from a friend.. He offered me the pup free if I wanted it, (he was getting $500. for them 20 years ago), foolishly I did not take it.. Living in the plains, I didn't think I would have much to hunt with it.. Big mistake.. Thanks for the show..
40 degrees today so the fianc decided she would come help set some snares and some bobcat sets. Did more slippin and sliding in the gumbo than we did setting snares and traps but it was still a fun day. Hopefully will have a few furs waiting for us in a couple days. She had to bring along her fierce trapline dog. If only I could get her to skin them I'd be set.
I went out and gave'em heck today. Pretty good action for being above ave. temps. 2nd quad of the year for me. These came 1, 2, 1 with a couple minutes between. Had action on 4 stands out of 8 stands. Had to carry the quad about 600 yards. Too old for that much work in a day.
I would trade some coyotes just to have a chance at a cat like those above. Been a long time since I even called in a cat, and I wasn't the shooter when I did..
I'm using the old 30 gr. Berger bullet. Got enough for the rest of this year and maybe all of next year, depending. Then I'll probably get some of Chan's for the future.
Had another one in the snares last night. Decided to bring him back to the nice warm shop to skin. How's this for a good place to hang one while your skinning it?
Been remodeling a house and that has taken up all my hunting season, but did get out with dad (ole_270) for his birthday Sunday. Had never hunted this property before, even though in high school and college I had worked for the landowner for 10+ years.
First stand, 2 minutes after he quit blowing on the call one came off a neighboring property at a dead run. One bark, no stop, still coming as hard as he can. Two barks, stopped at 30 yards.
He got one the weekend before with my brother in law but didn't snap a picture. Lots of dry stands, and then 2 in a row.
35, yes I am. 10" .410 barrel on my Encore, and 10" .410 barrel on my buddies Contender. It's my go to small game getter. squirrel or rabbit, the Encore gets the nod.

Very Nice!! Dam, I just gotta case of the gotta haves.:):)
Not worth the effort to post yet another image of a dead prairie dog but have to say today was GREAT! Record high, 72, no to very little wind, blue sky, and a target rich environment. I'm beginning to think winter is the best time for P-dogs.
Placed a Timney trigger in my Sako Vixen and she's a tad better than before.

Sounds like fun.. They were out in abundance here today when I drove by them to check traps, I might have to sneak up there and plunk a few in a couple days.
sweet! She's stylin' now. Being a girl and all, I'll bet she would take to some hunting 'make-up'. Next trip see if she wants some facepaint applied. It'll be uber.
Man you are full of good ideas. "Getting ready" with makeup is bound to help get her excited about going. There was a popsicle in the deal this time. While I'm not ready to phase out popsicles, adding "makeup" is definitely a good idea. Do they make face paint in Realtree?
Ben that's a nice coyote. Did he get a leg through or did he just not fight the snare hard enough to really set the lock? Any of your coyotes looking rubbed yet?
Tomorrow the Prairie Dog Invitational prospecting trip will be underway. We are headed to the Killing Fields and something is going to die. There will be no Fast Twist allowed...
Be here at 8:00 in the morning and you will have a day that would teach you so much about the mistakes you have made with your choices of rifles, stocks and twist...
Good work guys. I spent the week in Lewistown for work and didn't get to play much. Had one coyote in the snares when I checked on Friday and had another one that twisted out. First time that's happened.
There you go! Bruce said you were a real good shot too!
What rifle did you shoot on the trip? Ttsx's?
I took the 223AI and was shooting 60 grain NBTs slowed down to about 2650, hoping the load would be fur friendly in case we got something I wanted to keep.
It was indeed fur friendly, really worked better than expected.
Robster, yes we run curs. We don't breed them anymore, just have two now. We used to run them more when we lived in IN, they were poison on squirrels and coons.
Very nice. They truly are poison on coon and squirrel. I have one. Will be getting another but I have to wait until my old Lab passes on. Not that I am rushing it. Unless of course I want to get divorced, then I can get one at any time. Hmmmmm....wife or Cur...... Tough one there!! lol
Wish I was shooting bobcats but seems I'm always out after prairie poodles. I broke my shooting sticks last time out and came up with these 5' bamboo sticks - six pieces for $2.68 so I figured they were cheap to try. The 5' length does let me shoot standing but they're a bit unwieldy, I'll cut a set down to 42 inches which works for my kneeling shots. Temperature hit 73 but the wind came up so I called it a day.
I was walking and gunning, here's how I rolled:
Hoping the Vixen gets me an invite to the invitational.
Y'all are tearing it up. Went to Rancho Deluxe yesterday to zero Nikon I'd dropped onto the ol' LTR.
Soon as I pulled up to the bench, this turkey-killin' sumbitch waddled across the shooting Lane at 50 yards. Greased him with my off-duty AR & TAP 55 gr.
Folks round here like to catch em live and feed them shell corn for a week or so to get em tasty before they whack em.
I prolly should have parboiled him, but decided he'd better serve by attracting some coyotes.
We're fixing to have some Montana like weather, but may get out and try to call a dog or kitty cat outta the swamp behind the Ranch tomorrow afternoon.
Poobah, I thought the same thing cuz could not see any blood till I flipped him and saw the exit.
I'm so glad I don't have to deal with those buggers getting in my coyote and coon traps anymore.. Good job on whacking them! I actually don't think they're very ugly, but they are definitely nasty.

We take every opportunity to clean them out of our trapping and hunting properties. They raid turkey nests and like you said, they'll keep you busy resetting traps when you could be catching real fur.
Thats a sweet little rifle Wille... Nash and I had a tough day on the line(seems to be a pattern emerging ), so we blasted some doggies before it started hailing and raining on us..
wont bore you with the u-joint removal process..it involved bigger hammers,a cut off wheel and eventually a torch..be nice to have a shop with hydraulic presses and chit, besides a sledge and a disposable socket..
anywho, back to the dead chit, sorry for the hi-jack
willecoyote, shooting those old crows with a rifle sure gives one a great deal of satisfaction... Haven't done that for a while.. Need to get with it before the season closes..
Used enough gun for sure! What'd the other side look like?
Probably looked something like the front starling in this pic. I killed 2 birds with 1 stone....no make that 1 20gr screaming 17cal. pill! I waited for 2 to line up, the front starling was spread in a 20' circle around the impact site.

This may come as a surprise to some but bobcats fetch $40 to $60 in many parts of the country, if you are lucky. Some states open season as early as September. They are barely worth carrying to the truck. They kill more stuff than coyotes even think about. Nothing more than vermin from Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and pretty much anywhere east of there.
Coyotes are worth even less and they stink to boot.
It's a Campfire tradition, started when JeffO said you shouldn't use it because it will spook deer off when you are aiming your rifle at them. And I don't want to plug the barrel riding around with the muzzle on the floorboards..
Not rationalizing anything. I kill em for fun, no question about it. Just a nuisance animal around these parts. Turkey and fawn killing machines. Need controlled like everything else. Kinda like prairie dogs I reckon. I wish we got the money that you guys do out west, might look at it different if I did.
c) The holder of a bobcat hunting tag shall carry the tag while hunting bobcats. Upon the harvesting of any bobcat, the hunter shall immediately fill the tag completely, legibly, and permanently, and cut out or punch out and completely remove notches or punch holes for the month and date of the kill. One part of the tag shall be immediately attached to the pelt and kept attached until it is tanned, dried or mounted. The other part of the tag shall be sent immediately to the department.
Took our "end of the 'line" picture.... We aren't done officially until Saturday, but we're going to sell tomorrow. Missing some coyotes and a badger, but oh well.

Thanks, Remi is the first cur we've had but won't be the last!
I love curs.. They're so tractable and easy to hunt with. I hope it warms up enough for coons to start running out here so we can get after them with ours.. And the bobcat tasted a lot like wabbit.. Travis was tearing it up...
Shrap, nice! Looks like you didn't get the big snow we did.
flave, that is my 17 hornet. it wears a legend 4-14. The new 6.5 creed has a LRHS. I've only taken it to 700 with factory rounds. They are my matching pair of rugers....

Some great photos of guns, critters and dogs.. We were off of a couple days and just checked in..
Mtcurman, you DO need to send that photo to FFG as Travis suggested.. That is a great photo.. Awesome.. Excellent work trapping and great photography..
Well this isn't from this year I was a few years younger with no kids and a really good hound. I ran across this picture and brought back some good memories I'm the guy on the right the dogs name was Main Street Stretch I just moved back from Kentucky and this was the first 10 days of season most dark to daylight!

That is a mess of coons now! Good job! Coon hunting is so much fun.
Mtcur, that's an awesome last day! Jerrad, That would be a pretty good haul for a season around here, for 10 nights that's crazy! We went out tonight, didn't get a coon.....just got a dog sprayed!
wouldja look at that prime, handsome, well-furred specimen.....
holding up that mangy-azzed coyote by the ear?.
A bud took me to his inlaws place to try to break in the new creedmoor on a long-range doggie. Saw a pair working a bottom in the cow pasture. Ranged the closest one at 585, hit him first shot off sticks, leaning against a pipe fence corner. While he was spinning, his mate run over to see what all the fuss was about, and I promptly missed her....twice. Shot was from the fence just in front of the treeline about straight over my right hand. I reckon this creedmoor will do....
I was surprised by the damage done by the 140 Amax at that range.......
Yes it is a swift. The second one I got this year. The farmers out here hate them, they like to dig big holes in there fields. Killing these little critters gets me more permission to hunt than any other that I hunt.
How is that CZ in the 17 treating you? Looks like a fun critter getter.
It kills like lightning, I haven't really seen what It will do off the bench yet. I just scoped it the day I bought it, got zeroed pretty close and started killn stuff with it. If can get a day of good weather I'll spend some time on the bench with her. It should be easy on fur too.
Been thinking one of thoughs little 17 would be alot easier on the little critters. My 204 is hard on fox. Im sure it would hard on cats to but can't seem to get one of them killed.
Yes sir I will look you up. I would love to see your place in person , after all the picture I've seen. It might cost me alot if I see that Creed in person Im sure Im going to have to own one.

Haven't shot a fox with it and our season closed fri. So It might be a few months unless one gets into the chickens but it didn't exit the possum at 65yrds. It did exit a skunk at the same distance but just a small hole. I think it should be great on red and grey fox and bobcat, I'm sure huntsman has experience.
I been here 5 years, never seen a bob or cut a track. When RIO7 came out, one crossed the road in front of him and ran into my windbreak pile. I'm not so lucky...
Rebel and Remi treed this one tonight. We only have a few more nights left in the season so we are trying to make the most of it. They still need work but they are getting there.

Great looking pups! Looks like they are well on their way
My son is pretty proud of Remi, she was his 15th birthday present.
We went out again last night and she treed one right infront of us on the river bank. I blew the coon squaller and he climbed down it got pretty exciting then, all three of them, Remi, Rebel and the coon swam the river but the coon got in a tangle of brush in the river and got away. The water was at least waist deep at the brush pile so there wasn't much we could do to help. They reluctantly came back across and we went and found another one here's a pic of the one that didn't get away.....
I've caught and released a couple fox in cages while trapping raccoon. The red was a young of the year but the gray was an old female. Funny thing was after the first time you would think they wouldn't go in again but I caught them both 2 more times in different cages on the farm.
Weather has been good the last few nights and we are having good luck for the end of the season. We got three more tonight, we treed 5 total, 3 in the same tree but we left 2 of them for another night.
Yep. Richardsons......he was the only one I got all day that was pic-worthy ( open-casket type) the others were disarticulated...and I hate posting pics of that stuff. The rifle is a straight .223 we reamed out of a 221 fireball...hence it has a 1 in 14 twist ( Shrapnel told me that twist is skookum) and Im shooting Hornady 52 Amax...made for that twist.
Don't know what that one escaped disarticulation...
Nice shooting.. I think Shrapnel has this figured out.. Keep up the good work.. got my first one this am, but with the 39a.. Kate grabbed it an ran off into the sage, and dropped it when she decided to chase a jackrabbit... My children are not restricted from the fun things in life.. Spring is wonderful!!
Yeah...Hornady even labels the boxes for 1 in 14 twists...surprised me too, but after seeing what they did on gophs with a slow twist, Im not thinking they are deer bullets, looking like varmint bullet fo' sho'.....
.222's seem to be forgotten, but it is a great caliber.. Have two and older Sako, and a 700 with a Douglas barrel.. Had a pal not given me about 500 trimmed cases for a .223, I would still be using the .222 for my gopher and p.dog shooting.. Use them some, but the .223 also gets lots of play also..
Sako 6mm PPC sporter. Most accurate cartridge in the world and this gun has never shot at a piece of paper. Who needs calipers and a quarter to check how good a gun shoots. This one hits everything it is aimed at...
Are your populations consistent up there from year to year? seems boom and bust here in Utah and also where i shot them today in Idaho. Some years they're everywhere, others its slim pickins.
Had a good time today, went with 150rds and came home with spent hulls.Good but not the 500+ rounds a day type that it can be.
I made it up pretty high on the hill today, we are a good month ahead of spring here.
No. Populations arent consistent at all. Yesterday we hit a couple fields that hadn't produced in the last five years, and burned 800 rounds of 223 and 204. Ground completely dug up. See thread on this forum....
While Nash and I were out and about a couple days ago looking for sheds, Nash walked out a ridge and this coyote jumped up.. Nash skinned his .22 smokewagon and took aim at the running coyote, which was about 80-100 yards away, and shot at it. He hit it in the neck, and down it went. It needed a finishing shot, but still, to drop a coyote at 100 yards with a .22 revolver is no small feat.

Those old Mitchell 308 reels are dandies...they're my favorite ultralight. In fact I just got home last night from Reelfoot Lake in TN. and used two 308s there.
and the Eagle Claw pack rods aren't too bad, either......
Mine's the two piece model (Denco?). Same as the pack rod but half as many pieces. Great little rod. You can fling a Rooster Tail a country mile with it.
Went up to Clyde Park, MT to the fiancés grandparents for Easter and got out on Saturday to do some gopher shooting. Planned to do two days of shooting but Sundays weather had them pretty scarce. Ended up going through about 700 rounds on Saturday.
We took our daughter out for her first gopher shoot. Couple more years and she will be dusting the little bastids too.
ingwe, sounds like your burning those gophers up.. enjoy..
Rosco1, Our gophers are really down here.. I shot maybe 35 today.. This is the second year in a row, that the numbers have been horrible.. Don't know if they caught a plague, three years ago, there were lots even as they started to go down for the year.. Then disaster...
curman, nice catch of beavers.. Some of those look like little bears!! Elmer would have been proud of that shot.. best of luck...
We just got back from our first prairie dog shoot, it won't be the last. Here are a few pics. Due to high winds and dust on the full day we had planned, we only shot one afternoon and one morning but those 1/2 days were great.
We are celebrating a 450+yrd shot my son just made....
I don't know what you guys usually shoot in a day, we hit 150 but that really didn't matter, we had a great time making memories!
Glad to see you fellers have been tearing 'em up.... Laker, good on you for taking your daughter, start them young! I haven't been after doggies lately, though they were out in abundance this afternoon. Mainly been wrapping up spring beaver trapping, picking up elk sheds, and tomorrow I'm hoping to bust a turkey..
We have had a pretty awesome day today. Started out with both of us getting a nice bird together then we drove to one of our favorite trout streams. Turkeys and trout....not a bad way to spend the day! I'm about worn out but my son is still in the stream.....to be young again.
Yea,,,, that's all we have here. See my "Bad day" thread. To bad you didn't make it this far north. We have a bumper crop this year. The Steelhead fishing the best in years too. Or so they say.
Field checked out the other thread.. Excellent.. Yea, I wish I could have made it on up there.. We will another time.. I love that area of northern Idaho.. We're heading out for gobblers next week.. Keep those ground squirrels nervous.. Good luck.
Nice pics FG. I'm going to try a couple of those 4 piece Eagle Claws for backpacking this year.
They look uber.
Dave
The four piece outfits are pretty easy to find on E-Gay. I love that little 5' two piece. Especially in the canoe. Matter of fact, I'm looking at adding a 5'6" two piece to my battery if it doesn't get bid up too high.
Glad to see you back among us Reverend Dave. The lords work is never done.

My son camped with my parents at the trout stream and finished his weekend with another stringer on Sun. He said to us on the ride home "it's going to be hard to top this weekend isn't it." I had to agree. I reminded him that we were shooting prairie dogs the week before, some might say we are spoiling him, but it's a good kind of spoiled IMO.
Got my turkey on Sunday.. It was a great hunt, Nash and I almost doubled up, but that didn't quite pan out. They came into 18 yards, with this one strutting, and I gave him a dose of #5 shot. Picked up another tag yesterday, so hopefully I can get another.
I almost had one a few years ago, at a gun show, a dealer had one for 900 i went to hit the atm, as I was 300 short by the time I got back it was gone!

$900.00 for the Forest Service carbine? This was $1900.00...
That's a pretty slick looking rig FG... Nash and I killed 3 rabbits from under our neighbor's hunting cabin today, one was at 2 steps with a full choke 12 gauge..... Tweren't pretty.....
That is a nice rifle FG. I need to make it down your way so we can kill animals and beers.
Travis
The spring Rock Chuck gala is supposed to be on again this year. I was planning to send you a heads up but I din't want to say anything until I was sure my young protege (slacker) down in Nevadaland wasn't going to back out again. We're talking early June,,,, maybe you can meet us up in Yellow Pine if things come together. I'll let you know.

Yep,,, that's her.
It really wasn't that much trouble or expense but I'm fortunate enough to have a smith that knows his trade and doesn't bend you over for a simple task. Cost me $379 for the rifle,, + $175 to set it back, rechamber and clean up the action,, + another $135 for the stock with checkering. I had a good Walker trigger on hand so I sold the trigger, stock, and BDL bottom metal (I prefer blind magazine) for about $185 IIRC. My smith even threw in a new crown. Said it was SOP.
Maybe you can shoot a Chuck with my little home brewed deuce. It ain't a Cooper/Sako but it's a pretty sweet little rifle for only having a titch over $500 in it.
Now I don't like killing rabbits this time of year, but lately they've been right up by my house, scratching off fleas and such, so I have decided to thin 'em back a little....

A man's got a right to defend his property and protect his family.
I'm thinking that Colt will be a star by the time the invitational rolls around. When we were over at Bozeman last week, Nash would start foaming at the mouth whenever we'd see gophers along the road(which was often)...
Clark, I'll try not to.
Grand, I agree 100%... Nash plugged another at about 100 yds this morning with his Marlin .44....
We did a little Eastern style rodent control today......wish we had fields full of targets like some areas out west but....we still manage to get some trigger time.

I used to LOVE shooting rats! We had a couple high volume areas on poultry farms and it wasn't unusual to kill 250 a night. BIG FUN!
Ingwe, true dat... Fieldgrade, nice job, love those pellet pistols. Nash and I got one from our grandpa a long time back.
It was quite a shot even though the distance was only 2-3 inches. It's a bitch to shoot em in the noggin without hitting one of the wires in my cage trap. Especially when the little bastid won't stop running around like a Rat in a trap.

Today I was doing the cage trap moving target at 2', but first, I looked around for some spectators. I killed them. Then back to the cage trap. Like in boxing, put one in the body to slow them down, then you can plug 'em in the head.

Wonder if they make Conibears in his hat size?
I gotta shoot my squirrels that way with a pellet gun.
Its against city ordinance to shoot even a pellet gun in town, so I live trap them and take them to the garage( aka: my suppressor) close the door and 'transition them for relocation'
Thanks,,,, 2-3 inches is about it for me with a hand gun though. Any more than that and my accuracy is impeded by my poor eye sight (and lack of hand eye coordination:).

And by "relocation" I'm assuming you mean skillet.
Sod-rat safari this weekend. Dogtown on our place along the Mussellshell is booming. This place was waist-deep grass a few years ago, looks like the moon now.
Ruger Predator 223 stoked with 50gr VMax. Missed a few but made it up with doubles.
Got an urgent call this a.m. about an enemy sighting in the back yard. Seems he's been resupplying his belly in the vegetable garden there.
Made a quick trip via mole-recovery vehicle with a little single shot Winchester that spits the Aguila Colibri at 500 fps in one-hole 20 yard groups...
The enemy was engaged and defeated...
Then the hero pic and celebration was initiated...
I shot Momma on Monday. The pic on the previous page showing the 25 acp was bunk. I used a 22 mag and dusted her at the hole.
When I drove up to get her, baby #1 was prevented from getting away because of momma's corpse.
Him I dusted with the Uber Colt vest pocket 25acp.
Yesterday, driving from Dad's to my house, baby #2 was wondering aimlessly and gave me a 7 yard shot as I drove by. The colt was in my pocket, so I used the 9mm.

Actually it was, but the 22-250 is the most deadly gun I have. I just didn't want to shoot it much and have to clean it before the Prairie Dog Invitational.
Bring the 03-A3 and a shotgun with lots of clays and we can do some side bets on the shoot with some other guns...

Is that the 1894 you were telling me about?
Yes it is.

That rifle does not look very new.
Travis
New to me, idjut. It still looks newer than those GFY guns you tote around in the trunk of your car with your handcuffs and whips. Here is a better picture...
If I got a badger, it would get dropped off at the taxidermist.
If I can get the rat that was under the bird feeder, 10 feet from where the wife and I were eating dinner last night, he is going to get dropped off in the garbage can.

You'll never achieve Indiana Jones type status if you don't carry a whip.
I got this guy yesterday with a 1939 Winchester 69A with CCI 22 CB short that sounds like a BB gun. Minnie Pearl left the price tag on her hat. I leave them on 22s as a memory aid, until they wear off.
My bud smokepole came out to bang steel. A prairie dog was out just past my 600 yd gong at 620. He neck shot him with his nula 260. He got out the 7/08, and while spotting for him, I noticed his buddy come out later on the same mound. He drilled him in the butt, for the kill. I was his jjhack to do the find him later deal. No need for winches.....
No Uberlanches. Don drives a Subaru Forester or a Prius, I thought you guys knew that.
And no tats, but I did drive my Harley out there. That thing is bad-ass, you can tell just by lookin' at it. Don attached a 200-foot roll of baling wire to the drive shaft and we winched that 'dog right up on out of the swale.
What a coincidence. I have been shooting rodents this week and I eat salami and cheese every day. I stopped eating starch in Oct 2013 and lost 30 pounds of beer belly. Now I am on a high fat diet and weigh what I did in college.
My son and I have been doing a little "vermit control eastern style" using his pellet gun, TC contender 17hmr pistol, ruger amer. 22mag. Ruger sr22, and 22/410. The farmer was so happy he gave us 5lbs of sausage from a couple hogs they killed.
This guy didn't beat us to this one, he justtook advantage of a recent kill, he was about to shed and couldn't see so this made an easy meal for him.
Thanks Travis, I think we've just about cleaned up the barnyard, it's getting hard to see a rat now, my son has resorted to shooting mice with his pellet gun now. We did see one more groundhog last night but he is pretty wary now! We just don't have the target rich environment like the prairie dog or ground squirrel killing fields you guys have. My son keeps talking about our 1st pd shoot this spring, how much fun it was and how we've got to go back!
I killed all the same sort of schit growing up in the Midwest.
BB guns in corn cribs for hours on end. The mice would run and we'd pop 'em as they stopped. I don't know how many raccoons and pigeons we killed at night using nothing but a flashlight, a BB gun, and a T-ball bat.
As a kid I would sprinkle chicken feed on the rafters in the chicken house and then go back at night with my daisy and mag light and shoot the mice off my bait trails. Had to stop because mom sold the eggs and the nighttime disturbance messed with the hens egg production!
FFA "pest control" contests were an annual deal in my home town when I was growing up. I'd hate to the think of the numbers of pests we killed. My favorite tool back then was a tennis racket, at night, guarding the door for any "fly by's" that might get missed by the pellet guns. Rubber bands around the pant legs, to keep the mice and rats from going up the inside of the pant leg. Good times for sure...
In 52 yrs living in Wisconsin, I saw one badger while shining deer and got one on the trail cam about 5 yrs ago. I dont know why they are protected here neither.
Good shooting WCH. I've never shot a Badger. Had several opportunity's but after skinning one for a friend I decided the stench wasn't worth the few dollars they fetch..
Thanks.. I have my local Tax. skin mine.. He will do it for $15/ best money I ever spent.. I didn't have this one skinned.. Most of the ranchers demand you shoot them on sight.. I don't feel that way, but I also want to keep them happy.. So the badger got it.

Yea,,,, I'm not passing judgement,,, just making conversation.
I do however know how destructive they are so I can't blame the ranchers.
FG, I knew you were fine with it.. Just they are such a pretty animal when tanned.. I don't like shooting they unless I sell them or have them tanned.. On BLM they get a pass unless they are prime.. Got one this spring that was a dandy.. He is being tanned now.. Have to keep my hosts happy if I wish to return.. Have a good one, bet it is a nice night by the river..
Good job on the badger Wyo! Not much I dislike more than putting up a badger hide.... What a nasty deal. They sure can make a mess out of a nice coyote or bobcat set too....grin

probably the same stupid reason they won't let you shoot ground hogs, legally.
Bought a house in April, been remodeling and moving in etc. I have a prairie dog infestation. Bought a pellet rifle just for this purpose. Caught one unawares this morning
I think badgers are awesome. The nicest one I've killed just got done fighting with a skunk and Gruff would not let me put it in his truck because he's an ass hole.
They are thick around here though and landowners expect them to be shot year around. They're absolute hell on roads.
Serious question: have you ever hunted them at night? I guess they're mostly nocturnal and I am bringing a green kill light next time Im on the Hi-line. Where we shoot there are a number of badgers...

I never have.
I know everybody tells me they are nocturnal but I see them all the time. High noon. Sunset. Early morning. Doesn't seem to matter.
Matter of fact, I can't remember the last time I saw one at night.
ingwe when you say three boxes, you mean 3 hundred round boxes don't you?? Haven't shot many p. dogs yet.. Still trying to thin the gopher population..
No it's the same barrel... 25" Pac-Nor.... I know it looks longer than that in the picture, sort of an optical illusion.. I'm considering lopping it off at 23".
Ingwe, that sounds like a good day's shoot to me...
Mtcurman, those Pack Nor's are pretty fine barrels.. Have one on a .22-250AI, but it is cut off at 27"..Very accurate even with about 2600 rds. down the bore.. Nice rifle there..
Wyo, this one has held up well, I'm not sure how many rounds have been down it though.
Travis, laffin', when I first saw that scene, all I could think was why did he hold that right even with his ear to shoot?! He won't be called Lucky Ned much longer at that rate.
Just got back from the killing fields in northern AZ. About ran ourselves out of ammo. It was 3 days of dog killing fun. The numbers are still on their side.
We haven't started shooting prairie dogs seriously, yet!! Still shooting gophers.. We shoot a for 2-4 hours each morning.. Our numbers are down, but we have been getting some good shooting each morning.. This CZ has been my main .22 for gophers this spring.. Some of the areas a .22 is easier than a center fire..
This morning, I switched to a 10-22 Ruger I bought a couple years ago, but have shot very little.. With Rem. LHP, it was a real gopher getter.. Got one old one first thing.. The little semi proved very accurate this AM.
Field, It is a military training rifle I think.. I bought it used and it shoots everything very well.... I am using Yellowjackets now.. It is my favorite .22.
I nailed a big fat long tailed rat between the shoulder blades this morning. He went into a break dance into heavy brush and I did not recover the body. I need to find 22 hollow points that are this quiet.
Good job Wyo.. Nice rifles. I love those 50 gr 'Maxes.... I need to try some of the Z's, they're a dang good deal. Dad and I have been shooting some 40 gr BT's lately out of his .222's, they're like little laser beams.

If I could only choose one bullet for all .224's, it would be the 50gr. V/Z-Max.
But the 40's definitely have more pop when you get them screaming.
Tell Downstream I have decided I do love my 222 Rem Mag. I'm going to use it on dogs this season.
Torque from a fast twist barrel can create an unusual phenomenon to the shooter similar to shell shock and does contribute to a loss of stability in reasoning....
Clark, on my travels, I picked up some CCI Quite .22 lr with a segmented hp.. They are 710 fps. I believe the had a faster load, but these were great for town pests.. The only time I ever saw these loads, and don't remember where I got 'em..
mtcurman, in the years before I retire, bought up a bunch of 50's in Vmax and Blitzking.. They are as Travis says UBER.. I think the Zombies are just a green tipped Vmax.. Got a box of 500 40 gr.Zombies on sale this spring.. Haven't used them yet, but they should be just great.. Those little .222's are a great round..

Yeah but.....a 1 in 0 twist has NO torque....
Which explains why my mental acuity is so razor sharp....

Here is 22 I extended. But it is not accurate enough. I need to build a stiffer long 22. Then I can shoot 22 short hollow points and sound like a BB gun.
Here is a 50 cal wildcat 50CB I built.
Here I turned the breeches of spare 12 gauge barrels into Remchokes and screwed them in series.
Here is the M107. My father sold his design to Detroit Arsenal.
Seem to be a lot of wabbits around your camp too Don.. Yesterday there was one right alongside the house, so Nash grabbed up a "spear" and went sneaking over to it and right he got set to throw he saw Mom looking at the cute little bunny through the window.. He sort of acted like he was just stretching and came muttering under his breath back over to the shop.
We have shifted from gophers to prairie dogs for our daily hunt.. The dogs loaded up in my summer varmint truck and we were off for the mornings hunt..
Then about 11:00 it got pretty hot.. We had shot about 50 dogs, and Kate and Peach said it was time to head in, have a cool drink and a nap.. Sounded like a good idea.. It is a tough job keeping these varmints under control, but someone's got to do it..
I did some trading and got a new to me varmit killin machine. Just put the scope on yesterday and bore sighted in the basement. Grabbed 4 leftover reloads from a box of mix and match reloads just to get it on paper, all 4 tore a ragged hole.
Field, Mtcm, bought that truck new in 1984.. First one I ever owned.. Been a great vehicle.. Now just use it for short hunts near home.. Plan to knock some of that old paint off and camo it again.. have a good one.
Field, it's chambered in .223 but part of the reason I got it was because you got me thinking about the 17FB and I thought she might get rebarreled one day but that's going to be hard to do if it keeps this up. Not to mislead anybody, that group was only 50yrds shot from the back patio table between rain showers, but it was 1/4" center to center so that's still 1/2" @ 100 with some leftover rounds that I think were loaded for one of my ARs. Just thought I was going to be getting it close on paper after bore sighting but that's where the first rounds hit with no adj. so good enough! I'm liking the CZs now after the 17hornet I got a few months ago and now this one, I wished I hadn't waited so long to try one....guess it was the backwards safety and the box mag. that kept me away I like the walnut stock on my 17H but this Kevlar stock has a nice feel to it too. I'll post some varmit pics as soon as something makes the mistake of coming into the field behind the house! Wyo, we've got an old nisson pathfinder for a hunting, fishn, and trapping truck, I bought a gallon of OD duck boat paint from Cabela's I think for $40 or less, it has held up extremely well.
Wyo, here's our "duck boat" hunting truck. It's been a few years since I painted ours and either I don't remember right or the price has gone up but Cabelas still sells it $59 a gallon. It's Parkers duck boat paint I used what they call hunter green. I bet the tan or dead grass would blend good in WY. FG might be right, you might just ride yours like it is, ours was red when I got it and I couldn't have a red hunting truck!
Huntsman22, Those are BIG adult prairie dogs you are showing. Sometimes when shooting pups, it is hard to tell they are not adult ground squirrels. But you are shooting adult prairie dogs.
I have hunted a shot over town where it was hard to get a pup's head to stick up at 200 yards. I have hunted where they have never been shot, and i can walk around shooting adult prairie dogs in the head with a 22 rimfire held free hand.
Yeah, Clark. These weren't on my place. Hence multiples with a HMR. Mine are so cagey, a shot will put them all down for a real long time before they even venture a look outta the burrow.....
Huntsman, you know I have limited experience with pdogs but the one in the first pic looks like a Boone and Crockett to me, maybe it's the camera angle. Wyo, Thanks, I paid $1500 for it, I've had to do a little work to it but I've more than gotten my money out of it and then some, we use it like a road legal ATV!
On my way down to do chores, there was a raggit trying to get under the garden gate. I went ahead and whacked him, since the hummer was still fired up from yesterday. Got down to him and another one was IN the garden. That'll learn 'em.....
Far as I can tell they don't share the same habitat or compete with mourning dove but whatever, I'll shoot em on sight. I've heard they taste like morning dove but bigger. Sounds like an OK deal to me.
Ol' Jim came out to the ranch to zero his Cooper 204. After getting his turrets set on steel, he promptly knocked one over at 580 yards. Happy as a kid....
I have shot some in Az. We have a bunch right here in town.. Probably been around 5 or more years... But as near as I can tell they never leave town..
Yea,,, they've had em over in Lewiston for a few years now but I hadn't seem around here until this year.
I'm not sure about not sharing habitat with Mourning Doves though. Ours gravel on the same road and Roost in the same trees as the MD that have been here for years.
Only thing I know for sure is they're dumber than chit. We see em graveling almost every day on our walk to the mail box. They'll wait till the last minute to fly when the dogs get after em and then simply fly to the lowest and closest limb handy. Our wild birds would never let the dogs get that close. I'm actually surprised they haven't caught one yet.
Had a great place to go for dove a few years back that had both. Collared were easy to shoot compared to the mourning doves my buddy and I both limited on the MD and almost as many ECD each. A couple of pigeons into the mix made for a great grilling experience along with the shooting.
Nash, one of our buddies, and I went doggin' a couple days ago, but unfortunately some contractors were laying water lines on the dog town and there were lots of cattle around, so we ended up shooting more rocks than anything.
That is a nice cat.. You eat catfish?? Some I have had is excellent.. My wife is used to walleye and panfish, she claims she can't eat catfish... I always thought it was pretty good, but never had it very often..
Wyo, I love eating catfish, but not ones that big. Too watery. And flatheads are by far the best eaters, but we don't have them here. I like eating about the 10"-15" ones best.
Don that's a brute!
Thanks Ingwe.... It was the 3rd time we'd seen that fish, had hooked him a couple days earlier but he got off, then a few minutes before we landed him Nash was pulling in a smaller cat and the big one was attacking it. Mebbe we'll catch him again.

I love eating catfish. One of the best tasting fish out there IMO. When I lived in Maryland I'd fish for them 3 or 4 times a week all summer long.
Next time you have some don't tell your wife SCHIT! Just fry it and tell her it's walleye. She'll love it.
TR, I only work the destructive rabbits around the house this time of year. The ones in the field get a pass. Besides that, I haven't seen a coyote within rifle range of the house for a long time.
Very nice digs there Don.... I've been box trapping the little baby rabbits that keep popping up and putting them in the woods for in the fall.. Nash is disgusted with me for that.

Saw lots of bunnies on last PD shoot, and didn't bother them. But when they saw a PD vaporize inches away, they seemed to wise up. On 3 separate occasions Id see a PD approach a bunny and the rabbit would act like " Get the hell away from me! Theres something wrong with you! People are trying to KILL you!" Rabbits would sit 25 feet from the truck while we shot, but they soon didn't want to be that close to a PD.
I matched wits with this guy for two weeks. I was worried he was learning faster than me... but this morning, he made a mistake. He ran and hid under a trap, and then poked his head out to take a look.
50 V-Max from a 22-250 will disassemble a jack pretty quick. We popped about 5 of them on our last PD shoot just cause there were so many of them.
It doesn't take a .22/250, a .221 Fireball with 50VMaxes work just as well . I had one come right up to me to investigate what I was doing (eating lunch at the pickup), so I reached over and got the little CZ and chopped him up).
Over all, that's my favorite .224" bullet, bar none.
I bought it when they first came out. Dropped it in walnut a few years ago. Just haven't shot it this year. It was time to get the cobwebs blew outta it...
Was out yesterday and it hit 92 before I called it a day, it was HOT in the shade. Had my new suppressor out in dog town and boy does that work GREAT! Was shooting my Swift but all my shots were under 250. I liked it so much that I came home, picked up my Sako Vixen and 40X and took them in for muzzle threading. Poor doggies think I sound too far away to be dangerous.
The rancher's wife complains about the shooting noise, this time she didn't even know I was there.
Nash and I braved the heat yesterday and had a good time at the dog town yesterday... Nash was gunning the trusty 600 triple deuce, and I of course had my Socko '250...
Nash, me and a buddy of our's littered the dog town with guts and gore this afternoon.. Probably the best shoot I've had all year. Unfortunately, no pics, so I guess it officially didn't happen.
He scares me. He looks like a rancher who told me I was in real trouble for hunting on his land, until I came up with the name of who said I could hunt there.
Don't you guys have problems with worms in your rabbits this time of year? We always have to wait until after the first killing frost before we can shoot rabbits here.
I've actually had to get some work done around here. No time to hit the prairie this last week. I'll play with the new can this afternoon, and pop something tomorrow....
There's a ton of them around.. I haven't been shooting them much though. They try and commit suicide by diving under the state truck when I drive by though...."kamikaze cottontails" I call 'em.
Nice work there.. Saw three coyotes this am, and never got a shot.. Should go back and try my call.. So much to do this time of year.. Waterfowl, sage grouse, antelope, forest grouse, always coyotes.. Just was given a secret spot for big browns.. We should have two falls each year..
Hopefully, the first of many to die by handgun this year (of various makes and caliber). This one thought he was 'hiding' under a cedar tree at 32 yds. 158 gr Speer JHP. I've switched to some 125 XTP and 110 Sierras to try for more 'splash'..
Thought I had a photo of the carnage a 240 gr HP out of a 77/44 does to a bunny wabbit at 15 yds but I can't find it...
Always head shots on these rabbits. It is a pathetic shooter that can't hit a rabbit in the head. Cottontails are as much for eating as any game bird. Anyone that just kills a cottontail for the sake of killing is no better than a poacher...
ingwe, you really going to eat 32 rabbits??? I give lots of game away, but I don't think I have eaten 10 rabbits in my life.. I hear they are excellent.. Years ago I ate some that were good.. My late wife and I tried cooking some, we had them in a crock pot to cook before frying them.. When we lifted the lid, the smell was just like skinning a cottontail as I remember, and the pot was floating with rabbit fat.. It was one of the few pieces of game she would not cook, and she was a great game cook..
Lots of chicken recipes work with them too, but they best are those that cover the pieces in some sort of liquid and bake them....Mushroom soup/sherry sauce is a fave, and I have an easy Sweet and Sour recipe that works great.
Theres not much better than rabbit, if you par boil the parts for 8-10 minutes or until the meat falls off the bone, strain that water and add a bag of Muellers home style noodles, cook them till done then add the boned rabbit meat and a can of creamed mushrooms, you will have some fine eating, we make big tin casserole pans to take to camp, it gets better every time you reheat it. Its simple to add as much or as little as your taste demands.
If you like a little more crisp to your pan fried rabbit, dip the parts in scrambled eggs and replace the flour with bisquick and add some corn flake crumbs.
That works great on grouse breast if you fillet the meat off the breast bone first also.
It quick and easy to premix in ziploc bags and then just drop the meat in the bag , give it a shake and drop it in the skillet.
You guys are killing me, I guess I'm going to have to get some perch out of the freezer and fry them up, since I can't kill anything but crows from here.
First day calling this year. I finally broke down and bought an e-caller. I went with the Foxpro Banshee. The first call they sent has been pretty pathetic. It is 50/50 if the remote is going to work, if I did manage to get the call to start playing there was 90% chance that you couldn't stop it or change the sound. One call to Foxpro and they are sending a replacement call. Sh*t happens and they took care of it. No complaints there. This one came to the old fashioned open reed call. Sako 222 and 50 gr V Max.
Had an UBER hunt yesterday morning.. Set up my Foxpro and starting playing ki-yi's, within 10 minutes there were two dead coyotes laying about 50 yards out.
Hit the first one's shoulder and blew him up pretty bad, but the other just had a .224" hole poked through on both sides.
Nash killed one yesterday evening by spotting and stalking, but I haven't uploaded the pic yet. He shot it at 315 yds with the dogleg triple deuce....
John, I put 20 bunnies in the cooler ( all I cared to dress and cut up.) Already had 30 something in the freezer, so Im set!
But I don't ever remember better bunny hunting. I shot those 20, had twice that many get away before I could shoot them, then counted 31 more on the way out I could have shot from the truck...
The bad news is that next year will probably be the low point in their cycle.
I went out and made my annual round talking to ranchers and securing permission for the upcoming season. The conditions were too good not to make just a couple of stands in the morning, and I found action on the 2nd stand, so I called it good for the day for the callin'.
Last Sat. we were on our way to pickup our new golden retriever puppy, when I spotted two coyotes harassing some antelope.. I stopped the truck and glassed around.. I spotted one about 50 yards to the left of a buck antelope..
Got the .270 out and took a solid rest. The coyote looked to be about 400 yards away. Put the 400 yard dot on the coyote and squeezed.. At the shot the coyote ran over the hill out of sight.. The buck continued looking down the draw where the coyote went o a long time..
Checking around, I spotted the second one looking at us from about 300 yards.. Holding a bit high I sent a nother 140 gr. Sierra hpbt on its way.. Saw that coyote drop..
Headed over to check the scene.. Came to coyote # 2 first.. He was down but not out.. Shot from the .44 put him out..
Hi Vel, thanks.. Got the .270 out of an estate.. Has a fairly heavy #5 barrel on it and has made me a real fan of this cartridge.. Have a good one...
an estate sale--was the rig a special build by someone back in the day? initially, i was just guessing it was likely an older pre 64 model 70 rig when i read your post.
when i first started hunting yipper dogs, i used the .270 with Speer 100 gr spitzers--that pill was not a good choice. i switched to the 130 Sierra bt, which was pretty fair, and made a couple long shots with it. something i discovered by chance was that a good pill for performance on the hides was the 130 Nosler partition--a nickle to quarter size hole, and it was accuate enough to at least 300, though i never shot one farther away than that with the partition pill. the rig was a Remington model 700 with a straight 6X scope.
did you ever read the article by William "Pom" Ainsley? it was in the January 1968 of Outdoor Life magazine. he used to hunt coyotes on skiis back in those days...good hunting.
great to know you're out there having fun with those critters--the best hunting there is. but then again, big whitetails, hares, cottontails, and chucks are right on their heels...
Hi Vel, I often used 110 gr. Sierra's in the .270.. They work pretty good. When they are used up and the 140's, I was thinking of trying the Sierra 130 BTSP..
This 270 was made just the way I always thought I would like to build one.. The guy also had a .300 Win. built exactly the way I have mine.. Would like to have know him.. Right now the .270 is competing with my .25-06 as one of the 3 favorite calibers.. I enjoy hunting all the game you mentioned there.. Have a whitetail hunt coming up late this mth. or early next mth..
I did read that article by Ainsley.. In fact if I havent lost it, it should still be in my varmint file.. I believe he used a .220 Swift a great deal.. You still do much varmint hunting????
great to know you have a "varmint file". i started one many decades ago--great medicine for the soul. in fact, Bob S. came by yesterday and the day before, as we were talking about these older reads, and i gave him copies of 4 older articles--which for him is a slice of heaven. i occasionally visit with Tim H. who is a constructor by trade, though he spends his winters in his little trailor, swatting yotes all winter out in eastern Montana and west No. Dak. he often sends interesting pics. he has been written up in some of the magazines. Bob considers him to be one of the best there is.
Pom was, according to the article a "Swifter", making his own stocks with a very high comb, and using 6X glass. but he zeroed at 375 yards--a strange system, and it worked for him. i found early on that i could not use a zero such as that--and Bill B. taught me to zero 1/2 high at 50 back in the early '70's, something i did for some years. for the most part, i've used .22 CF (Swift and 22-250), and 6mm rounds (usually .243 Win). the .22-250 is my favorite.
the 130 gr Sierra is a good pill. while out hunting yotes with a relative back in the mid 1970's, i nailed a badger out in the snow with that pill--which back in those days--was something considered to be "long range". had to walk the shots in, with the Cisco Kid spotting. made a fortunate shot--something a song dog won't hang around for. when Scenarshooter skinned it, he found the pill in the neck. Pat calculated the shot at about 900 yards, give or take a few.
yes, i still enjoy all of the varmint hunting, but coyotes are becoming much harder to score on around here. as Bob maintains, there are very few left. same with fox--they were everywhere back in the 70's, but seldom seen here these days. to consistently find yotes, one has to travel from here heading north--and east, to areas such as Lewistown, etc.
great find on that rig, and i'm guessing it will likely swat a few more crafty canines in months to come.
btw, it sounds like the specific pill you are presently using in that .270 has a habit of finding its intended target...
Hi Vel, very nice information there.. One nice thing about this site, we can visit with folks we may otherwise never have met..
That was quite a shot with that 270.. Things like that make for great memories.. Like you the .22-250 is my favorite.. Still have mine I got in the mid 70's.. It is on its third barrel.. Have several Swifts now and a .22-250 AI.. Still the old .22-250 has been everywhere with me.. Our coyotes are much more scarce than in the 90's til about 2010..
I remember those details about Pom now that you mention them.. He shot a 52 gr. Match bullet, I believe, over a charge of I4350..
One fun article I found in an American Rifleman from the 1940's was the use of 22 CF on coyotes.. The guy had been shooting coyotes and other stuff with CE .22's since the early 1900's.. He also mentioned the .25-35... It is a great read.. I got it in a stack of magazines someone gave me.. I think I can locate it if you are interested..
yes, that article sounds like a very good, interesting read.
i'll send you my address in the next day or so, and i'll be happy to pay you for two copies--as i think Bob would like one too.
Pom used the 53 gr. Hornady hp, which is how i came to know of using it. went and tested it out, and right there found the Holy Grail of coyote pills. his charge was 42 gr. 4350. like Jamison, he also employed a squib load too. his was a 41 gr. Sisk bullet with 18 gr. of 4227. btw, he also used the .270 Win and the .240 Super Varminter for a time early on.
never have used a squib load, but i always carried a S&W model 60 loaded with 158 gr. hardcast when walking up on them--though now it's a Ruger sp101. something like this does a good job at giving them the "third eye"...
Had a great hunt this morning.. Called in 5 total, but only got this double. It was pretty cool, they came charging in from about a mile off, and I shot them both at under 50 yards.
I like those hills behind ya. Cool calling country, especially when you first see them coming from a mile away. It's like, here he comes,..... where'd he go,.... oh there he is, now where'd he go, .....oh here he is over here now, dang it, where'd he go, and then BAM......in your lap.
Ben: Have you ever seen a coyote and badger work together to catch gophs or PDs? Really interesting, though of course the badger does most of the work and the coyote supplies the brains....
Not being a really serious elk hunter and lacking Shrapnel's system for loading elk once the are slain I usually pack a varmint rifle in addition to my elk rifle.. After a short hunt this am for elk, I was heading toward town, when I spotted this coyote.. The high winds must have covered my approach... He was chewing on an old antelope leg, when I spotted his head in the grass.. Got the Swift on him, but my golden Kate couldn't stand it.. So she let out a yip.. He stood to check this out and made a perfect target.. A 50 gr Vmax did the rest.. Maggie is checking him out.. Her first coyote...

Cool beans! The yote looks pretty well haired out for this time of year and the pup is getting some good exposure.
Shrapnel, you are anything, but poor!!! You have a large fortune in firearms... And I enjoy seeing them on the site..
ingwe, we sure have fun.. She was not too sure about this coyote.. The antelope she attacked, but she just sniffed this guy.. He was pretty good.. I am having the skin tanned..

Tell that to my kids that never knew what a coat or pair of shoes was until they were in high school...
Shoot him in the head with a 22 and throw him on the dead coons and skunks pile.
I participated in the local ritual. I dumped the animal out of the trap while he was still break dancing. Some day they may make a movie, dances with coons.
I really wish I would have gotten a pic of the wolf I got with my 243 this year. I will try and snap one when I get it on the stretcher. I am REALLY liking the 95gr ballistic silvertips!
Is that knife a Benchmade Griptilian 551S orange? I got one yesterday, but will have to wait a year to gut a deer with it.
I got one coyote in my life, 25 years ago. I was wearing a tie and wing tips, eating corn flakes, when a coyote ran past the window with one of my hens in his mouth. I pursued with a shotgun. The hen must have been making noise, as I eventually caught up.

its a ka-bar dozier design, nice little lockback for about 20 bucks. very light
We went out for and early hunt yesterday, and caught this old male by surprise.. One shot from the .220 Swift and 50 gr. BK did the job at about 300 yards..

How do you like Blitzkings in your swift? havent tried them yet. Are they messy?
kendricks, I mostly shot BK's or Vmax anymore.. This coyote wasn't badly damaged.. Shot one earlier in the mth. that took a BK head on.. typical position for a called coyote.. He never moved and the only indication he had been shot was the small patch of blood on the entrance wound.. I like them.. some times I save fur sometimes not.. For a fur gun and general coyote killer, I like it better than the 243.. Never fooled with the 204... If I am going bigger, I step up to a .25-06, .270 or 7mm mag..

Thanks, may have to give them a try. I love my swift and is my favorite calling rifle by a long shot. Have shot .243's, .223, 22-250, for coyotes and always go back to the swift. I try to save all fur, as you can probably guess I dont shoot a .243 much...
TR, mine slips on and has little bungie cords wrapping it thru sewn-on loops. I can't tighten the frigging thing down enuff to keep it from slipping forward on recoil. 4-5 shots and it covers the built-in brake deallie.
My son and I set out for a quick coyote hunt last night. We set up in a big field over looking several what I call patch woods. I started out a little different this time. I took my Elk coyote power howler with me on this trip. I started out with a few quick barks followed with a long howl and waited. The night air lit up with what sounded like about 10 coyotes answering me with barks howls, laughs and other sounds that would make your hair stand on end! I then let out another howl with the power howler and I guess it was to much for them coyotes to put up with because within about 10 seconds after I howled 2 big coyotes showed up about 70 yards from us and they was looking hard at my red light I had shinning in there face. My son settled the cross hairs on the chest of this big male and thump! That Sierra 55 grain hit him like a hammer! With my sons weight and plus the coyotes weight minus my sons weight on the bathroom scales it weighed 43 lbs...
Ruger American compact .223 with Krylon lol! Nikon 3-9x50
There is a dead coyote right above Nash's knee, on the ridge... Felled with a single '4895 fueled V-Max.
Set some steel today as well, good to be after fur again!
Ben
Should be a great year sales wise for coyotes up around those parts. how was the fur after the V-max? Blaze orange...Coyote a target of opportunity while after deer?
curman, you folks all though with the deer hunt this year???
Nice looking coyote.. .22-250??
We were actually looking for a deer for me but kind of got sidetracked....
He hit the shoulder blade, so he's got some serious stitching to do. I have to work up a milder load for fur. I'd hate to shoot a cat with that and blow him all to pieces, and it stinks blowing up nice coyotes too.

Yes, .22-250..
Have you tried Matchkings? they work well for me pushed around 3800 out of my swift. about nickel to quarter sized exits. although I havent shot a cat with it yet. Worked pretty good on last weeks Nebraskan whitetailed critter as well...
Havent had much luck fur wise with anything with a polymer tip.
clark, nice old coon there.. Been years since I shot one.. We I first retired we hunt them with dogs in W. Va. Had a great time.. Mt. Curs were the dogs... Some here but not many...
Yesterday, I had to go north to one of my friend's place.. After a short visit, decided to take the dogs for a little ride and look for a coyote or jack.. We spotted this fellow sitting in the sage. One 230 gr. Horn. HP from the Smith .45 ACP dropped it on the spot..
This morning we took a little ride for coyotes and jacks.. Spotted one sitting he look like it was about 100 yards to the jack, thought of using the .22-250, but decided the Smith .44 would be more fun. Had it loaded with 44 spl. cases, 8 grain of Unique and a 210 gr. Rem. HP. First two shots were side buy side, but low.. Held up a bit of front sight and tried again..It looked close but the jack ran about 30 yards and stopped.. I squeezed off one more and to my surprise, and I am sure his, drilled him though the chest for and instant kill.. Kate brought him back.. Paced it off at 136 steps.. One of my best shots..
She has a tough life to besure... Play in the snow, snacks, sleep in front of the fireplace, or sleep in front of the snack drawer... Thanks.. I like it too.
Called in and killed a Mt. Lion this afternoon. Pics will follow..... Called him in with rabbit distress.....showed up at 10 min mark into stand. 260 Remington with 139 scenars did the trick.
1) Mostly for coons, I put cat food in a have-a-heart trap. When the trap goes off, I shoot it in the top of the head with a CCI CB short from a rifle with a 24" barrel. Sounds like a BB gun. The wife, quietly working a jigsaw puzzle, will not hear a thing. 2) Sometimes when a coon in the top of a tree, I shoot it with body shots until it falls.

Wyo,
that pic is food for the soul--and with a 4 inch Smith, no less. great job! when a fella can do that, the Swift just has to go to it's room to sulk...
back in the mid 80s, the 4 inch 629's were my favorite rigs by far...
Thanks for your interest Hi Vel.. I just got luck.. But I was happy to see the first two shots hit with in inches of each other.. My shooting is improving.. Have a good one..
Clark you need some colored folks and rednecks with hounds around your place. I've never seen anyone have as many coons as you kill in one place. Nice job on the rat by the way.
The Kid, I am on one of the many islands in the pacific northwest. There are no mountain lions or coyotes here to kill the coons. There are coons, rats, mice, squirrels, nutria, owls, eagles,.... and sometimes a herd of deer swim here and then get hit by a cars. These are black tail deer, and the does are smarter than the bucks when it comes to cars.
5 miles from here across the water on the mainland, the coon population is lower. Raising chickens here is very different from the mainland. Over there coyotes are a problem all day. Coons can't catch a hen in the daytime. Many people have chickens here and lock them up at night so the coons don't get them.
Everyone here complains about rats and coons. They all have guards on the chimneys to keep them from nesting in there.
Amazing! Sounds like paradise for a young boy with a 22, or a man young at heart with a 22.
BTW A very good friend of mine used to live on a small island off the coast of Washington back in the late 60's and early 70's. I'm not sure which island it was but he has some pretty good stories of wild times with one cop for the whole island.

Sounds like Guemes Island. Still only one cop. Still growing sheit loads of ganja too. Rumor has it the whole island was raided by the DEA in the 70's since everyone was growing pot.
Not a bad day of calling yesterday although I must say I'm getting really sick of mange and cant wait till it cycles out of northeastern Colorado..
Ended the day with this bobtail. Unfortunately its size was rather deceiving and there wasnt anything around the cat to reference it to. Had I known it probably would have got a pass, small size, decent spots but its belly is casty. Will just add it to the personal collection, worth more to me than what auction will give.
Gonzaga Im in love that little rifle lol. It's an honest 3/8 to 1/2 inch @ 100 with that load I mentioned earlier or I'll give you the rifle. It's a joy to carry at night also because I do a lot of walking and its not as heavy as some I've carried over the years. Now if I can only call up and kill me a Mt. Lion like some people, my quest would be over !

Whatcha trying to say buddy?......lol You ever make it out this way, we can give it a shot......there's plenty around, and only the game and fish like them darn kitty cats.
I've been kicking the idea of getting that same exact rifle

Thanks for the offer! I might take you up on that sometime. It's been 2 years since I've been to New Mexico so I'm about due a trip. You get you one of these CZ hornets and you will really like it. It's cheap to reload for and just a pleasure to shoot. I might get me the CZ American version one of these days so I can have 2 of them...lol
You ever make it out here to the Whittington center? My daughters BF works out there and they're always seeing Mt. Lions out there.... I have already bought the dies to reload the Hornet....lol.....I just need the rifle and some brass now.... I'll buy one after the new year.....gotta start the year off right....lol
Never been to Whittington center. You are farther north to where I usually hunt in NM. I've hunted from Lovington to Las Cruces and some over near Gila. That's some good looking country up near Raton. Yes Sir I agree, a Hornet is definitely a great way to start the new year!
This warm weather is really screwing up me getting my full snare line out. The way it's looking I won't be able to get the whole thing out until January 1st. The few snares I'm running have seen little action with this warm weather. Managed to get this little muddy female today. Favorite snare set is beside a bank. Makes for quick dispatch and still makes the set reuseable.
I've had a little less than 2 dozen snares out for a couple weeks now, things have been slow. Snowing in town right now so maybe things will pick up and I'll be able to get some more snares set.
I got lots of dust in the vehicle in Eastern MT in October. It has been raining non stop in Seattle for 2 weeks. Trees are falling over from rain soaked soil not holding them. They are blocking the roads. I am getting phone calls from MT saying there is no point in going South to AZ THIS winter. Things are slow in Seattle. I got rat a week ago. Keep the critter pics coming, I am living vicariously through them.
Been putting a little fur down. Sicker than dog today so Im in the house. [URL=http://s1285.photobucket.com/user/n8will/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-11/IMG_0501_zps7ytyncsb.jpg.html]
Nice Haul! Cool to see the red in the back. Starting to see a few more up here since the coyote density has been low. Cant seem to get one called in though. What region of CO are you in?
Looks like a lot of bunnies been saved this week. Killed 3 dogs yesterday myself. Just starting to get good around here, last yote I killed was a month ago to the day from yesterdays kills.
Would have rather it been a coyote than a fox since there doesn't seem to be many fox around but I'll take it. Would have ended up with two more coyotes but someone decided they needed them worse than I did. Not many things worse than a thief
Shot this big male off the mirror of our chevy malibu at my grandparents place. ~150 yard shot 22-250 50gr ballistic tip
Picked up this pretty red fox about 10:30 the next night.. Wasn't quite dead in the highway out in front of a military facility. I had a gun but figured I'd get shot at if I finished this fox off. One conk on the head with a bottle of leinenkugel did the trick.
Deer, nice work.. Cool looking rifle and with a 50 gr. BTBT, who would have figured that..Figured you would need at least a 75gr. and quick twist rifle to kill a coyote...
Never got a coyote over the mirror of a Malibu, did get a couple over the mirror of my Toyota. Kepp up the good work!!!!
The snow is making it hard to get around in and unfortunately it will probably be worse once it thaws and crusts over. Post-holing with each step will make it even worse.
Went out calling with my dad and sister's boyfriend on his family's land. Coyote and rabbit tracks everywhere. Had two howling back but never saw them. Blanked on his land.
Kind of creepy sitting under these giant blades while calling
Got permission on some different land about 30 miles away. We headed that way after hearing there was a bunch of coyotes on it. As soon as we crossed their fence we saw one from the truck. Drove a little further and set up. A few minutes in I could see a coyote sitting on top of a hill about 600-700 yards out. It had no interest in rabbit and bird distress. I switched to pup in distress and it immediately came on a dead run and picked up two more from somewhere. One stopped about 100 yards from me and I hit him in the chest facing head on with a 50gr ballistic tip. Right after that my dad killed one of the others I couldnt see with his new ar-15. We never hit the 3rd one despite flinging quite a bit of lead.

Made another stand and had 3 hanging out about 3/4 a mile out that had no interest. Ended up seeing 7 coyotes within a mile or so. Heading back to the land of no coyote hunting tomorrow unfortunately. Hoping to come back in a few weeks and kill some more!
