My current load is 44 grains of 5744 behind a 250 grain XTP. I'm almost out of 5744 and I can't find any. I have AA2015 and IMR4227. I'm also contemplating going to a 300 grain XTP as the 250 will generally separate the jacket from the core at close range. I used the 4227 for the first couple of years I had it, but dropped it due to reports of poor ignition though I've not experienced it myself. Anyone run either of these powders long term?

VV N110 is a great book powder and currently available at Grafs. Very clean and great speed.

I just missed out on n110 locally at the wolf's den. I feel pretty good about using 4227, so I probably wouldn't bother with the hazmat fee for a couple of pounds of powder. Looking to see whether anyone had actually experienced ignition problems with the 4227. I may mess around with the 2015 on the 300 grain bullet to get a little extra velocity. With the jacket separation on the 250 I was afraid to push it any faster.

I've been able to find plenty 777 lately. No jacket issues with conicals.

Plenty of 777 here too. I get more muzzle velocity out of the smokeless.
If you reduce velocity (using 777) you may avoid the jacket separation issue as well.

I would strongly suggest anyone not to start out with this load as every gun is different. I personally take no responsibility for anyone using this load in their gun without properly working up to it. Your particular gun may not tolerate this load.
When I initially got this gun and was killing deer with it, it was making a mess of the deer as I was trying to use a run of the mill muzzleloader bullets like the Hornady SST, that were not designed to run as fast this gun and load would run them. If you are going to run smokeless you need a bullet that is made to go that fast. When I started using the Barnes bullet never looked back. Every time it goes bang deer go down. I have shot extensively at the range. I can run an inch high at 100 yds hold dead on at 200 and only be 6 inches low. I have heard people using 3 pellets of triple 7 say they can do that but I have used that load and not been able to reproduce those results.
On a side note, I use 4227 as a fouling load, as my gun shoots better with a fouled barrel. I have never had it fail, but I have never carried that load afield.
I haven't been looking for 4198, but might if the 2015 doesn't pan out. They look to perform in a similar manner, and I have 2015. I have a couple of CVA's that can run up to 150 grains of powder. I don't run pellets, but with loose powder, I start getting unburned grains when get much past 100. I've got the MLII for reaching out there, so I'm running 70 grains of FFF 777 behind a blue MMP sabot with a 200 grain (40 cal) XTP.
Haven't been able to find 4759 either.
I don't use a muzzleloader, but I do see powder up for sale time to time....

Most powders are going for 20-30 per lb, so 30 for a discontinued powder is probably pretty good, but you generally end up paying a hazmat fee on top of that, so shipping nearly doubles the price if you're only buying a lb., so I'll pass if I can't find it locally or at one of the gun shows that plan to go to this winter.
Found 5744 at cabela's today. I'll probably still try the 2015 behind a 300 grain XTP
4198 powder in either imr or Hodgdon are great powders in the Savage H will produce a little faster results. And the 300 grainers are what the savage was designed for. With saboted loads start at 60 grs and work up to 67 or 68, my gun likes 65 grs. The slower powders produce less pressures. Although this powder isn't as hard to come by all powders are becoming scarce.
I've been looking for it locally for about a month or so, and haven't come up with any. How's the recoil with a full house load behind the 300 grainer? I'll be going to a gun show in Feb. and possibly another in March, so I'll keep an eye out.
The recoil isn't bad at all. A little more than a 250 but tolerable. Reloader 10 (60-65 gr)is another powder to try if 4198 isn't available.
Ordinary XTPs aren't designed for more than about 1600fps. An X bullet, an XTP Mag, or a Swift will hold up better. The X bullets and Swifts are pricey, but having a blow-up on a nice animal is no fun either.
My sons took 3 deer with regular 300gr XTPs at about 1600. All shots were pass-throughs with plenty of damage. Unless you need the extra velocity for long range, a lighter charge may do the trick for you. I just got a box of 250gr X bullets to try in my Knight, but plan to try the Swift A-Frames as well. They promise good expansion and wieght retention at from 950-3000fps and over. At a buck a pop, they oughta promise somethin'.
generally speaking the savage shoots better with the .458 bullets. the 325 FTX, barnes original 300 or the remingtion 300 hp with a black cr harvester of orange mmp depending on barrel fit. as was mentioned earlier go to Dougs message boards and click on Savage smokeless muzzleloading to learn all you will ever need to know about the Savage ML. H-4198 is pretty much the go to powder for the savage.

I scored a box of Hornady 300 grain 4500's at Cabela's NRA weekend. Now I just need to find some orange MMP sabots, and I'll be ready to experiment.
apologize but my cousin has an extra 10ml2 in stainless laminate that he might sell. Gun is used but in good condition. How much should he ask?
Seems like the sky's the limit on the SS/Lam's. I see people asking $12-2000 for NIB. I think realistic selling prices are in the $800-1000 range depending on who want's it bad enough. Auctions can go crazy sometimes.

No need to apologize; I've gotten what I wanted from the thread. Most I've seen lately go for 800 and up. They aren't making them anymore. If he's in a hurry to sell it, I'm guessing it would move pretty quick at 750 if he gets the ad in front of enough people, otherwise he should be able to get over 800.
