I got this bear last week on Kodiak, We had a great hunt and saw lots of nice bear. My son Kyle and a good buddy were with me.The bear squared 9'10'' and the skull was 28 3/16. I used my 375 RUM with 300 gr. failsafe bullets.

This bear Kyle got on Kodiak in 2005 when he was 14, this bear squared 10' and the skull was 28 1/16 green.

Geezus man! Awesome

For educational purposes, can you elaborate on the 300gr failsafe performance?

Dave, Thanks for the post!! Please tell us all about the hunt. Thanks Randy
PS..AWESOME PHOTO.... grin

They worked ok, but in my opinion I think the "X" bullets are better. This was my 3rd. brown bear and the other two were also big and I used X bullets on them in the 375 cal with better results. This bear took 4 shots to put him down for good and all shots were in the right spots, Frist shot was in the neck looking at us (only shot I had) 2,3,and 4 shots were behind and on the shoulder. The last three shots exited thur both shoulders. I've used X bullets for the last 16 year's and love them, just wanted to try the failsafe's

Kyle's bear he took with 180 gr. X's out of a 300 rsm with good results.

Their a good bullet just think the X's are better.

Way cool but couldn't ya find anything bigger? grin

Those are some awesome bears and I don't know chit about em. What's even better is you got to do it with your son.

Congrats.

I have found that the failsafes don't expand at all unless they hit something significant. I used them for a few animals and wasn't too happy either.

Congrats on the bears...they look awesome.

I am headed up to Kodiak in the last week of July. Unfortunately I won't be on a hunt like you were.
I will be doing some sightseeing with the lovely and the outlaws....oops did I say that....I mean in-laws.

Awesome guys
Posted By: Elkman Re: Kodiak Bear - 05/23/07
That is just simply outstanding!! As if my case of bear fever wasn't bad enough and you post pics like that smile. It has been a dream of mine to hunt on Kodiak for a big bear for a long time. I am booked in to go this October and simply can't wait. Congratulations to you and your son. What optics did you use on your rifles?
Posted By: ramhunter Re: Kodiak Bear - 05/23/07
Elkman,

We used Leupold 6X42's on both rifles!

You will have a good time, Kodiak is a great place with big bears. Remember the best way to get something big is to hold off and don't shoot anything small, which is very hard to do at times. We looked at 7 bears that were 9 and 9 foot plus before I hit the switch on this one!

Good luck on your hunt.

Ramhunter,

Tell us a little bit more about the .375 Ultra.
Posted By: JPro Re: Kodiak Bear - 05/23/07
Both bears shown are awesome animals, hard for us southern guys to fathom bears like those. You mention taking other big bears, but does the boy have you beat overall? grin

I know everyone is asking lots of questions, but I would love to hear about that 180gr .30 Barnes and how it worked on something of that size.

Congrats man, you guys did it again.....

Which one is going in our trophy room?

..grin...

Badboyz,

I got a Rem mag. action from Stick last fall in a gun trade..... I bought a rem. factory 26in. s.s. take-off barrel in 375 rum for $50.00. Sent the action & barrel to my gunsmith, he cut the barrel back to 22 inches and slapped it on the action.

I do my reloading and worked up a load with the 300 gr failsafe's at 2900 fps. and they shot under 1" at a 100 yds.
I have two 375 AI's and sold a 378 wby last summer.. so far i like the 375 RUM!

Got to love the .375 Ultra. I had one on a Remington 700 LSS, but I sold it. I am currently building one on a SS Model 70. They do put the hurt on an animal.

Well now, publishing a photo of a magnificiant adult Brownie may make some of the nimrods who still think they want to shoot em with a peashooter think again. Nice bear. With 4 good hits from a .375 maybe they'll realize it's important to have enough gun. Again, nice bear!

Nice bears!
Posted By: Brother_Bill Re: Kodiak Bear - 05/24/07
So am I a nimrod for hunting them with my bow?
Posted By: toltecgriz Re: Kodiak Bear - 05/24/07
Nimrod is not a perjorative, BB. Nimrod was a Biblical hunter and the term is sometimes applied to all hunters.
So yes, BB, you are a nimrod, among other things, mostly not bad. smile

I think we can agree. It doesn't matter how big a rifle you have in your hands, when the griz shows up at 20 yards, the rifle shrinks,,,,,,a lot. smile

Agree 100%

I submerged myself into everything brown bear for a long long time.

Hunted mountain grizz a couple times.

Realized I needed to go to the big island to quench my thirst.

I'll never forget the overwhelming rush that came over me when my guide wrapped his arm around me and said "congratulations, you have yourself a ten footer there."

Chills, disbelief & tears.

Congratulations on taking one of the world's greatest trophies.
I'm sure you earned it.

Wonderful trophies, you guys did it up good!
Posted By: ramhunter Re: Kodiak Bear - 05/24/07
JPro,
Kyle's got me beat on body size! I have him beat on skull size....
The 180 gr. X's out of the 300 RSM worked fine.. his took three shot's.. two good hits and one bad hit.......His last shot broke the bear's neck killing him instantly.
For a 14 year old boy I think with the lower recoil it was a good choice plus I wanted him to get a bear with his own gun......
Posted By: 458Win Re: Kodiak Bear - 05/24/07
Those are superb bears. Somebody obvioulsy knows how to hunt and can judge big bears.

Since those skull sizes correspond with bears of those measurements, obviously someone can also read a tape measure and didn't forget to divide by two.
Congratulation on two absolutely wonderful trophies. they don't get much bigger.

I'm sure your right, he certainly wouldn't have used it with the other meaning in mind......<grin>.

Appreciate the kind words....heh.

THX,Phil

I live here in Alaska so we didn't need to use a guide...so it was up to me to do the hunting and judging....

Your bear is not tiny, and is a "true POW bruin"

Bill just send me the video clip of ya shooting your bear! It is kick azz.....good job! and dandy bear.

I have no quarrel with using peashooters on Brownies. Mortitians gotta live too. Besides, the Darwin Awards is always seeking folks (posthumously) to nominate for eliminating themselves from the human gene pool. smile

That is pretty impressive, did you and your son go it alone, or with a guide?

Are you going to make full mounts out of both of them?

Congrats.

I'll venture a guess and say they were on Kodiak Island.....

There's a small chain of Islands off the Alaska mainland due west of Afognak Is. IIRC, "Paradise" is located on one of them. I flew over and would guess that it was at least 50 miles from Afognak. My wife of 30 some years tells me that I'm old and get mixed up rather easily though... wink
