Know/heard anything about these?
Anyone?

Not sure what I need it for. But, a stainless synthetic 454 lever action carbine How can that not be cool?
Posted By: VAnimrod Re: 454 casull lever action? - 01/13/07
Yep;

Had one. Safariman has it now.

VERY nice little rig; slick, smooth, and plenty accurate.

Not built to be a showpiece, but a workhorse.

The action is plenty strong, and tight, but still very smooth in action. Sights are adequate; a D&T job for a receiver peep sight would do wonders.

The stupid little swing safety on top can be removed by a good smith, and IMHO, since there's a half-cock anyway, should be so removed.

BTW - replace the factory recoil pad with a Decelerator; the .454 loads will flat out get your attention. That said, you can also shoot .45LCs in it all day, with little problem at all.

.454 loads (factory) through the carbine will give you factory .45-70 ballistics (300 grs at 1800-1900 fps), and you get 10+1 of those. Or, 11+1 of .45LCs via the same tube.

Hard not to like that...

I think I'll be needing another... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

hmmm ... i didnt know puma's were available in stainless ...

I'm liking that 454 SS with 16" barrel ...

Just looked at a stainless 16 inch at sportsmans warehouse. I would own it now if it had synthetic furniture instead of wood. Good looking wood, just not what I'm looking for.

There's a really nice article on the .454 Legacy in the Jan/Feb issue of Boar Hunter magazine.
Posted By: VAnimrod Re: 454 casull lever action? - 01/14/07
Yep, and there's a good one by Jeff Quinn at gunblast.com, too.
Posted By: hmt Re: 454 casull lever action? - 01/14/07
it's wood??? hmmm ... time to rethink ... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
Posted By: VAnimrod Re: 454 casull lever action? - 01/14/07
Why?

Amazing how many wood stocked rifles do PLENTY well just about everywhere.

Glass-bed the forearm, if necessary, and keep gettin' on...
Posted By: hmt Re: 454 casull lever action? - 01/14/07
i dont know ... i'm strange ... i prefer synthetic over woods ...

They make a synthetic. Just not in stock. Might have to special order it.
Can you mount a scope on it?,is it top eject?
Posted By: Nebraska Re: 454 casull lever action? - 01/14/07
Too kewl... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

As soon as Marlin comes out with a SS/Lam 1895G in 460 Ruger or 454 Casull, I'll own one. As it is, I'm trying to resist buying one of the laminate 45-70s that Davidson's just put out as a "special run".....
Posted By: VAnimrod Re: 454 casull lever action? - 01/14/07
Not D&T for scopes; top eject.
Posted By: Swampman1 Re: 454 casull lever action? - 01/14/07
It's a Winchester 92 clone. They should have set it up for a receiver sigtht. I don't believe I'll ever own another synthetic stocked rifle.
Posted By: VAnimrod Re: 454 casull lever action? - 01/14/07
Damn, two other things we agree on...
Posted By: Grady8541 Re: 454 casull lever action? - 01/15/07
Vanimrod,
I noticed this rifle has a loading gate on the side of the action as well as the removable tube like a Marlin 60 22lr.

Is the gate for looks only? Or, can you load through both systems?
Posted By: VAnimrod Re: 454 casull lever action? - 01/15/07
You can load via either system.

If it were me, I'd look to have the silly little safety thing on top of the bolt removed, and a peep of some description screwed into the hole made there. It'd be adjustable for elevation, but you'd have to windage adjust out on the front sight. But, it'd probably be about as bombproof as you can get, and put no additional holes in the receiver.

That, or a standard Lyman/Redfield peep for a 92/94 D&T'd.

Slick little guns; I liked mine much, but safariman offered me a trade too good to pass up, so away it went.

I'll have another...

Grady,

I did an article on the .480 Ruger version (same rifle, different cartridge) a few years ago that Guns Magazine has made available online. You can read it here: http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BQY/is_12_50/ai_n6275752

I was very impressed with Rossis quality and the smoothness of the action. In fact, Ill go so far as to say the current Rossi 92 clones are the smoothest of all the 92s, just not necessarily the prettiest.

Thanks KevinGibson and VAnimrod.
Looks like a new addition to the family is immanent.

IIRC the Marlin Action is not strong enough for the Casull by about 10,000 psi (or CUP--I do not recall).

I just sold a 454 fom Rossi, in the M-92 configuration. They ARE in production as well as the 460 in the New England/H&R single shots.
We have had a couple of these in our store

Just got mine from sportsmans warehouse.

16inch, SS, wood furniture. Was going to go synthetic, but once I held her, just couldnt say no.

I have to agree with everything VAnimrod said. Especially the, this is a tight and smooth action, part. Smoother out of the box than my Winchester M94, which I have been using for many years.

Going to try and get her to the range this week.
Posted By: Swampman1 Re: 454 casull lever action? - 01/21/07
The .460 nor the .454 is avaliable in the in the New England/H&R single shots. The pressure is too high.
Posted By: VAnimrod Re: 454 casull lever action? - 01/21/07
Get a box of .45LCs and a box of .454s.

With the factory irons, mine was dead-on at 50 yards with the elevator ramp all the way up with .45LCs, and with the ramp completely removed for the .454s.
Posted By: remseven Re: 454 casull lever action? - 01/21/07
Question for you guys with the .454 Puma - Can you tell me the factory recommended pressure rating? Can they handle the high end .454 loads without springing action?

Have looked at a couple, and like the way they function. And that brown stock/SS I think is "PUUUURRRDY"!
Posted By: VAnimrod Re: 454 casull lever action? - 01/21/07
Yes, they are rated for and can handle the full-house .454s without springing.

Factory rating is 65k psi.

First run tests at the 2003 SHOT show gave 2000 fps with a 300 gr. JHP in Hornady's hot .454 loads. That bests factory .45-70 ballistics, and does so from a 6 lbs (tops), 20" barreled carbine.
Posted By: remseven Re: 454 casull lever action? - 01/21/07
Thanks, exactly what I wanted to know!

But, I'm putting a bigger recoil pad on it then, LOL!
Posted By: VAnimrod Re: 454 casull lever action? - 01/21/07
That, is a must.

Put a very good, grind to fit pad on there, and have the receiver D&T'd for a receiver peep sight, get the little swing/wing safety thing removed, and you're good to go.
Posted By: liam Re: 454 casull lever action? - 01/22/07
The smoothness thing is something I can comment on as well. A few years ago, I had a Puma 92 rifle in .45 Colt (24" octagon barrel). The lever throw was very stiff. However, I recently bought a little 92 carbine in .45 Colt, and the lever works as smooth as butter, right out of the box. They've improved something in their manufacturing processes in the last few years, as the difference between my first one and this little carbine is like the "before and after" when you get a good smith to smooth everything out. It's impressive!

Liam
liam The 92 clone was take under the Taurus wing a
few years ago I believe and they imposed their quality
control at that time .On another forum there was some
testing done well over 2000 stiff (read full pwr) loads run thru it
and all dimensions check with no change. As taco bell says
it's good to go. Cheer NC

Took her to the range yesterday:

I am happy with the fiber-optic sights (HiViz I think). Never used the fiber-optic type before. Nice and bright, right on at 100 with Hornady 300g XTPs. A peep sight would be better, but these are doable. And, these certainly better than the factory sights that came with my other lever guns (Winchester/Marlin).

I am guessing they are using a better pad than in the past, as it tamed the recoil quite well. She is a real pleasure to shoot (my pard agrees). This assumes the Hornadys are full power loads I believe they are but didnt bring the chrono to be sure.

As mentioned several times, something needs to be done with that safety on the action. It appears easy enough to remove. Not sure what to do with the hole it leaves. Might try a dab of shoe-goo to hold it in the fire position. Not sure yet, but going to do something.

I am most pleased with the 16 inch, SS, 454 Casull Puma. Thanks to all for your input.
