Hey guys,

I think we've see enough pretty rifles... its time for an ugly one!

Here is my Zastava M70 in .458WM.
It's fitted with a Hogue stock with the full aluminium bedding block and topped with a Leupold 1.5-4x20 in Warne rings and bases (not the Leupold one shown here).
She's a 4 shotter (3 in the mag one in the chamber thanks to the bevelled extractor) and it shoots the big 550gn Woodleigh at 2080fps into the same hole at 50m.

It might not be pretty but it sure is functional and I LOVE it!

Yep, that's a 788. I'd like to try it out on White tail this fall. I didn't draw any licenses in SD this last year until the 3rd or 4th draw. (The lottery draw system South Dakota has really sucks.) I should move back to Montana or Wyoming. (I applied for Muzzle Loading, East River, West River, Black Hills - white tail and or Mule Deer. I applied for antelope, elk, sheep, goats - nothing except on the third or fourth draw I did get doe tags in the opposite corner of the state.)

I have a Marlin 44 and I think I'll do some testing / comparing the Marlin with the Remington when the weather gets a little better. I've had two Ruger 44's both semi-autos. They have their place, but no longer in my safe. Maybe if I lived in the woods again... I sort of need a 357 rifle, don't know which to get.

Ron, i'll get those to You now, will start at 8 Bore and work down to 40-65 Sharps, thanks for the account info, but we've no picture/bucket/e-mail/file storage anything here, this home computer is tied in with a giant network of computers at Wifes work at the hospitals, may be a security thing, I don't know, pics on the way.

My dad left me a ‘92 when he died in ‘75. I really like that rifle. I used it on varmints and small game all these years. I have a 357 S&W’s and a ‘92 would be nice!
That 1885 45-90 may be a little heavy for Africa hunting. Unless someone else carried it.

Desertoakie,

On this bigbore porn thread, .458 WM chambering of a Sporter BAR, an M1 Garand, or a Stoner-style Omen would be be like the guest speaker at a hooker's convention.
I knew they exist, but wonder about the numbers made of each.
There is another wild looking semi-auto too, but they are all like fat chicks compared to your BAR.
Very good on you.

LOL, You got em Ron, not one mistake in the pics descriptions, Thank You very much for posting the pics, it's funny, I was talking to an old buddy on the phone last night, told him I had to burn 20 rifles to get "down" to the 375 H&H, "WTF? he said, you are crazy old man!" grin

I can see you really like Fubars M98 458, it's a beautiful rifle, bet it shoots as good as it looks.

The little brown hay meadow in the center of the pic is where I was, on south in the thicket across the creek next to the hi-way under the shadowed hill across the road, 1125 yards up to the gong on the mountain, that big 338 put three of those 300gr Accubonds in 10 inches that day, iirc it took me 27 MOA to get em up there leaving at 3000 fps, not a bad stick and move hunting rig.

Would be fun firing a 458 that far, may have to have machine shop buddy mill me out a 60 MOA rail and put a 5.5-22 Nightforce on and see if I could reach it. cool

Well, accidents do happen, even if we help them along I guess ; ]..............off the top of my head, I'd need 80 MOA to get a 450gr TSX to 1125 yards leaving at 2400 fps, could be done I bet! laugh

LOL, Thanks for the compliments 158XTP, the 577 is a Verney-Carron, 500 Nitro is an Alfred Schilling custom boxlock built on a Merkel action.

Already done a test of sorts with the 577, it has 26 inch barrels and regulates perfectly to the sights with the 750gr TSX at 2076 fps over H-4350 powder, I shot a 55 gallon steel drum filled with water lengthways at 25 yards, at the shot, the main banded lid blew, the threaded filler cap pulled it's threads and came dancing back to me on the right side, the drum split at the seam, a huge dog knot was knocked in the bottom of the drum, I cant explain the tremendous hydraulic/displacement effect, it simply has to be seen to be believed/understood.

I saw that action firsthand last October in Tanzania, after Leopard crawling 60 yards through the wet river sand, I stood and fired at a huge old Cape Buffalo dagga boy in a herd of six, holding my fire until the river reeds blew an opening to shoot through, at 16 yards, the 750gr TSX caught the ancient bull in the last rib on his left side as he stood on a hard quartering away angle, at the shot the bull fell stiff legged and began his death bellow, I quickly moved left and gave him a solid through both shoulders, the skinners handed me a perfectly expanded 750gr TSX from under the hide on the 'front' of the bulls right shoulder under the hide, it nearly made it out.

Damn nice looking rifles. How is it shooting the 400 H&H and 400 Whelen with a steel buttplate?
Posted By: gunner500 Re: Bigbore porn thread - 02/01/21
Thanks Just a Hunter, both rifles weigh around 9lbs all up ready to go, the 400 Whelen fires 400gr Woodleigh Weldcore softs and solids at 2255 fps, the 400 H&H drives 400gr A Frames and BBW#13 solids at 2400 fps, both are easy on the shoulder, may be case design as to recoil impulse/velocity, I don't know, but don't find either uncomfortable from the bench, and certainly don't feel "or" hear either when firing at game.

Very nice stuff gunner500. I had a 585 bolt action wildcat done in about 2000, its pictured in my 3rd post here. RC,
I have come close to your 450gn TSX @ 2400fps using a Model 70 with 22" barrel.
My load was 72gn of H322 over a Fed 215 for 2381fps. (Hodgdon lists 71gn for 2220fps but just states using a soft point @ 3.340 OAL at roughly 61kpsi)
OAL for this load was 3.338".
The Barnes Vortex factory load for this bullet weight has an OAL of 3.328" and a velocity of 2133fps.

I always set my 35P up around 12-15 feet to avoid the blast and never correct to muzzle velocity, as I am never precise in my screen position.

Posted By: Riflecrank Re: Bigbore porn thread - 02/10/21
Yep, I have been over more powder-maker data than I can shake a stick at. Sir Bob (member CZ550) and Sir Jerry (gunner500) have too.
Your H322 is considerably faster in burn rate and bulky in comparison to the powders that Sir Jerry, Sir Bob, and I have found best,
along with the longer COL for added capacity and pressure reduction with increased MV.
Considering your SAAMI limited COL and and the speed you got with H322, that is excellent.

I have not damaged my Oehler 35P yet, but find the Caldwell G2 just as reliable, and with auxillary light source, and much handier and quicker to set up.
The old Prochrono was reliable too until a shotgun wad knocked it out.
I always precisely place the first screen 5 yards from muzzle, finding that prevents muzzle blast interference.
I can thus get a 5-yard correction for BC.
I even give credit to Sir Bob for his MagnaPorting, stated up front, to be backed out of if not appreciated.

Here is Bob's load with H335:

[Linked Image]

and Sir Jerry's:

[Linked Image]

I was able to get the 450-grainer up to 2469 fps MV with 84.0 grains of AA-2230 and 3.680" COL in a 25" barrel.
But that feels like cheating when it is over 3.6" COL.
I am waiting for the weather to break so I can try a lesser amount of AA-2230 at 3.565" COL, after I try the heavily compressed H4895 at 3.595" COL.
Hijack off, back to the .458 WM thread with me.
