Do they still sell it?

Yep, serving hard working Americans since 1921.

More of a Dave's Killer Bread kinda guy myself.
Posted By: flintlocke Re: Wonder Bread? - 09/10/22
Occasionally my mother would drag home a loaf, I loved it, me being a connoisseur of the butter and sugar sammich, but my Dad would say, "I Wonder if there is any flour in it?" Then he would wad up a slice into a doughball the size of a marble.
Posted By: mathman Re: Wonder Bread? - 09/10/22
It's the bread equivalent of mass market American beer. Very consistent, a technical marvel, but not much there.

Hot garbage.

Wonder bread was a prime example of a product of little value that was packaged in a way to attract buyers. It cost more and provided less nutrition than any other bread on the shelf. Myself I prefer the wheat 22 grain breads for every app. Will buy wheat French bread for subs. Mb

Since when did anybody eat bread for nutrition?
Posted By: The_Real_Hawkeye Re: Wonder Bread? - 09/10/22
It was originally advertised as never having been touched by human hands, i.e., the end user is the first human being to have touched it. It's produced as a 100% mechanized product, from flour to packaging.
Posted By: 5sdad Re: Wonder Bread? - 09/10/22
I remember when it built strong bodies in only 8 ways.
Posted By: antlers Re: Wonder Bread? - 09/10/22
I was a kid growin’ up in Georgia in the 60’s and my mom usually bought Hillbilly Bread. In the mid 70’s when we moved to Oklahoma she started buying Homepride Butter Top Wheat Bread. Nowadays I think Oroweat Whole Grains Oatnut bread is the best there is, to me.
Posted By: 5sdad Re: Wonder Bread? - 09/10/22
My dad used to buy Hillbilly Bread. Given that, I think that it must have been cheaper than other bread. I always placed in on the weaker end of the ox board breads.

Never heard that but pretty amazing engineering if true.

Every time that they said that, I would say, "Each and every one handled by [bleep]".

Light bread is a fairly regional thing.
Used to be able to buy some pretty good fluffy light bread
in this area. The last of the half decent light bread here
was Mrs. Baird's. The heirs sold out to the mex baking
company bimbo, and there's been nothing decent around
here since. Every loaf of light bread you buy at a store
has that barely risen half cooked swirl in the middle
regardless if you pay 99 cents or 3 dollars.
It's usually only palatable if you make toast and slather
it with jelly for breakfast or mustard or something for
a quick sandwich. I've got to where I just make
cornbread or skillet bread here if I'm using bread
for sopping etc.
Not many here notice since most are drunk or high
and the border jumpers mainly utilize tortillas

Fried bologna sandwiches and mustard on Wonder, canned green beans/corn and grape kool-aid as a kid. Thought we was da rich kids. When there was extra money we gots a slice of fake cheese.

Grew up eating Mrs Baird’s bread and bakery products.
Like you said, they’ve gone to hell since the Mexicans bought them out.

There was a Mrs Baird’s bakery / factory in the hometown I grew up in. You could drive by and the smell of fresh bread was awesome. They also had a “Day Old” outlet store, where their Delivery Drivers would return the products that were getting close to expiration, and sell dirt cheap. Lots of folks that had hogs would buy that stuff for feeding them.

When I was a kid, they had damn good fried pies made with fresh local grown fruit. And killer honey buns and Sweet Rolls called Bear Claws. Now their stuff is barely edible.

Wonder Bread was easy to roll into balls for food fights. For making sandwiches Roman Meal was the bread of choice.

I didn't realize that bread and television were first cousins.

Only bread (or buns) I buy except a fresh baguette once in a great while. I quit eating white sawdust bread when I started buying my own food at age 15.

Plus biscuits, Naan bread, and tortillas.

Don't eat a lot of any of it, though.

When I was a kid I went to a neighborhood kid's birthday party. When it came time for a meal, after the Pin The Tail On The Donkey, the mom had a table set up with Wonder Bread and a package of sliced bologna, and we'd stand in line for a sandwich and some Kool Aid. When you got to the table the mom would put two slices of Wonder Bread on your plate and ask if you'd like one slice of bologna or two.

I was appalled. What kind of meal was that?? You need to stack that sandwich high with bologna, not to mention some lettuce and mayo. One or two slices???
Posted By: eaglemountainman Re: Wonder Bread? - 09/11/22
^^^^^^

Agreed. Ya gotta stack a sandwich like you're one of the countermen at Katz' Deli.

At my house you'd have got one slice of the cheapest bologna on the cheapest store brand bread. Multiple slices of bologna and name brand anything was rich kid terrirory and that wasn't us. Hell I didn't even know what a beef steak tasted like until after I was out on my own. Hamburger and a cheap chuck roast once in awhile was as close as we came growing up.

"Come on Wonder Bread we're not done yet"

I never did care for the bread.

the only good thing about Wonder bread was you could carry it in your pocket wrapped in wax paper and make a dough ball that would stay on the hook when you drifted it down through a carp hole on the river and it didn't leave slime in your pocket like nightcrawlers.

I drove transport for Wonder Bread and got to watch it being made and it was truly never touched by human hands.

We referred to Wonder Bread as "Pooky Bread". I grew up in a German family and we got out bread from Dietz Bakery in Milwaukee, round loaves of rye bread unsliced.

Although my heritage is so solidly German that I have to fight off the urge to occupy the shelf at the store that holds French dressing, I grew up amongst the Swedes, and must say that Swedish rye bread triumphs over all other varieties.

2. I'm bringing Vienna sausages to my air conditioned deer palace later today.

Nope. Haven’t had a sammich either. The wife fries up a mess in the air fryer pretty regularly, but no bread is involved, other than the crumbs she dips them in. Makes shrimp spring rolls to die for too: big chunks of shrimp, cabbage, sprouts she grows, a little carrot, and rice noodles. I mix up some hot mustard with Coleman’s powder. Boy-o-boy. A nit-picker might say the wrappers are kinda-sorta bread.

Used to be a hole-in-the-wall at Hatteras that sold great shrimp burgers, but one of the storms washed it away.
