With just a little weather cool down, I'm hankerin' for soups, and stews. Ham, and bean sou

Good job.
Most important part is the bone.......and saving the juice from when you cooked the ham.
I use navy beans, onion, of course, garlic, no added salt necessary.
My wife introduced me to navy bean soup, got her to try it with ham shanks and she loved it. Often add a table spoon of Bore"s Head ham glaze for a little extra flavor(kind of like ham drippings).
made a pot last week and ate it every day until gone. Add buttered buttermilk cornbread to go
I love the stuff. My old German Grandfather made the best soup ever.
I always smoke hams with the bone in and use the bone for soup.
I use onion, celery. black pepper, bay leaves, garlic, and pinch of thyme.
I have been using my insta pot pressure cooker, and that really makes things easy.
Looks great!
I often take a cup of beans and purée them, then stir them back in. Makes for a really nice smooth texture.
I just made this last week.
2 - 14oz bags of Great Northerns
2- Big ass carrots chopped course
About three cups of chicken stock
One big onion
Salt and pepper
Four smoked ham hocks.
Delish.

Good idea!
So long as it's warm enough to keep windows open.
Powdered ginger in the beans, not enough to taste, helps that. Some enzyme thing. Oddly fresh ginger doesn't seem to work.
Probably my favorite soup next to beef barley
I like to eat it with fresh baked bread and butter.

Hope you stayed away from ignition sources after about the 3rd day.
Oh, yes. Yes indeed. Ham hocks and Navy beans, Great Northerns, limas, or butter beans. The last being my all-time favorite.
We call that fart soup around here.

That'll work!
I've kinda angled away from buying ham hocks, as there are only a couple brands to choose from down here. Found that ham shanks from the Spanish markets have more meat on the bone. Example: Sedano's and Bravo when they have them. Prices are better than the gringo markets, too.
Love it !
I usually use green or yellow split peas, instead of beans.
Cook until the peas break down, delicious.
Looks good.
Getting that time of year for a crock pot full of pintos and some black iron skillet cornbread.
been using smoked pork necks in place of the hocks...turns out good
I smoke my own non-nitrate ham hocks. Buy 30 lb. case (about 15 hocks) of frozen Swift brand for about $1.70/lb. Brine & smoke.
Split pea soup
1 lb green split peas
1 smoked ham hock
1 large onion, coarsely chopped
2 carrots, diced
1 or 2 bay leaves
1/2 t. thyme
4 C water
4 C chicken broth
1-2T cooking sherry
Saute onion then add all ingredients except for carrots and cooking sherry. Bring to boil then down to low simmer. Cook until beans dissolved, then pick meat off bone. Usually about 4-5 hours for me. Add back meat and carrots in and cook until carrots are tender. S&P to taste and stir in sherry.
