The thing about bear hunting, is, it's DANGEROUS! Besides your rifle, you hafta carry a big, an I mean a really big back up revolver, and a big knife an ya hafta go in groups of four or more, an after you shoot, you don't get outta yer truck to go look at it unless the bear falls over dead where you can see it. An you hafta use a big, and I mean really big rifle, a 338 is at the bottom end of what is big enough with at least 300 grain bullets, and carry lots of ammo because bears take a lot of shots to kill, and besides, there are other bears and wolves and catamounts and wolverines and lynx and bobcats lurking behind trees waiting to attack people. I know, cuz I seen all this stuff on TV and Peterson's Hunting magazines.
Spring may be a little late in most of the mountains of South Western Montana this year....Took this just a week ago, on the way to Bozeman for a ski trip.
I'll be taking all three boys out for their first bear hunt in May. Looking forward to it.
I am leaving in the morning. Didn't have a chance to sight in my 340 like I wanted so I will be stuck with 140 ABs in my 6.5-284 for this hunt.

Yeah the Snowies are at 165% of normal with more snow coming. I think the Little Belts are in similar shape. I am not much of a bear hunter, but try to get out. The last time I went when the snow was gone there were people everywhere getting rid of cabin fever.
Ouch! I'm guessing that ached a bit. Cool 'catch' though.
I'll work on the catching again this year. Oldest son appears to have a better 'touch' than Dad. Besides, unravelling knots in mono is a great excuse to cuss and drink beer.
One of these years I'm gonna have to try the bear thing. With luck I could knock off enough wheels to catch up to one...maybe.

Right on the cusp of three months, guiding hunters for coastal brown bear and mountain grizzly. Eager to fly into the field next week. Going to be an awesome season. Hardly any snow this winter and the eruption of spring is right on schedule.
I've got a archery tag in Az. Buddy and I cleaned out a seep and set up a camera on it last weekend. It's the only water in the canyon and with as hot and dry as it's been, out should be a busy stand! Farthest shot on Yogi will be 41 yards! Just gotta talk the wife into stubs time. Might be hard to do with my elk tag and Wyoming antelope, and looming coues deer draw.
The Nu's are for real and are even better in Application,than they are in Theory...which in itself is wellllll beyond Skookum. Have not applied power to mine and simply slip around with the paddle. Could see a guy covering some big water,with power.
They are VERY forgiving and will let you do things,that a canoe couldn't begin to suffer,as stability goes.

I'm planning on going, as I haven't shot a bear in a few years(minus one with a slingshot) and I'd like to try for a decent one. I don't expect to see anything near the size Boxer's got in his pics, but some decent ones are shot around here from time to time. The weather is supposedly set to turn here this next week, so I think there will be a few bears popping out. Haven't seen any yet, but got first reports of a few being seen this week.
I haven't got much experience hunting bears, and I always tend to think they are really big until I get close to them and can tell that they aren't. Think I'm going to stick to the bow(possibly a spear too) until I get better at judging size.Either way, it'll be a good time after a rather long winter.

4-rams is only good for 250 tons. Never have seen or heard of a bottle jack being used,but perhaps someone,somewhere,gived it a whirl. Boxer, if my 6 month old niece lived on POW, she'd have seen more BIG bears (and likely more dwarfs) than me.
I was on POW island briefly once for some water rescue training back in 2004. There were constantly bears on the beaches. The night before we flew out, I wandered around town and into the adjacent timber. I was amazed at the number of bears I saw. I saw more bears at random (and mature bears at that) in those few days than I would in a couple years of actually looking for them in Montana/Idaho/Wyoming.
I saw some Sitka deer too, and they were small compared to the mulies I am used to. That's why I always get a kick when Boxer goes off about his bears vs. anyone else's. It's like comparing his Sitka bucks to my Montana Mule deer bucks. Yes I realize the deer are two different subspecies and the bears technically are not (or maybe they are...I dunno), but comparing a salmon fed SE Alaska bear to a bear from most anywhere else is just dumb.
Dog Hunter, salmon makes them fat but doesn't make their skulls big. Take a look at the books AZ and CA produce big skulled bears on a regular basis. So no comparing black bears from AK to bears in other places isn't dumb. It takes genetics, evironment, and food to produce a book bear.
I was fairly excited when this thread started..Spring bear is my favorite time of the year...We get 2 months here in Oregon and I relish every second of it..
While sometimes entertaining,there has not been much in the way of reports and pictures, and that is to bad really..I enjoy looking at how its done in places I may never hunt or even see..
So I am going to put up some pics of springs past and hunting the central Oregon coast..There are not bears walking the beach,but we have some,and some good ones too..

I believe it was June that I was in your neck of the woods. Maybe July...Don't totally remember as it was 10 years ago. The training wasn't "harrowing" either. It was actually kind of pathetic, but that's to be expected given I was in the Marines doing some training with the Coasties .
You are living the life there for sure...I passed up a FS job in Craig a few years ago because I didn't want to sell my horses and I enjoy elk hunting too much. Not that I couldn't just come back home every year to do it. I hunt bears here too, but not very much. Never did get too into it. Haven't even attempted it yet this year. I really don't feel like skinning those stinky bastids out.
I don't have goats anymore,just the horse...I do make him fill in for the goats though...LOL
Goats are better for straight hunting though,as long as you don't mind all the walking..While there are plenty of places you can't take your horse,there is not many that the goat can't get into..Not much care either...Load them up and turn them loose..They stay with you all day and fend for themselves..Horses are a lot of maintianence as you well know..
Goats are more of a companion animal,kinda like a dog,but can do a lot of work for you...

Where in Alberta you coming to? I'm going out to a new spot tomorrow, buddy claims lots of good bears taken there by him and family in years past. I moved last year and am now in an area with bears, but have had to find all new spots which has proven more difficult than expected. Got some good land lined up though, so hoping there's a good one there. Took 2 days off work, and wouldn't you know it is been raining/snowing ever since. Hoping for a break tomorrow, but if not will go ahead anyway.
Good grind today,seen purty...but never saw BIG. Nothing would dry over 20",so tomorrow is another day. Grab a bite,clean up,rinse and repeat. Indeed an average afternoon.

Greenhorn with one I shot in Wyoming a few years back.....great hunt. If I recall, we saw three seperate bears in about five minutes, two were nice boars.

Damn, I hope she heals up quick and gets her bear before this heatwave takes it toll on their hides.
Hell anybody can kill a bear on POW, they are like varmints up there.
If you've been paying attention, you'd have noticed the pictures Mr. Boxer (lol) has posted of dead bears and other bears of some size that got to walk. They aren't just"a bear". .........not that Larry needs defenders.
I'd go to POW to shoot a bear, but I'd be too impatient and get some ground shrinkage. 5.5' to 6' is typical here and would make me happy.
Time to get serious in the next couple weeks..I have seen 16 bears so far,but none that have got me excited...
I did buy a new camera for bear hunting and long range shooting..Great zoom...I took it out yesterday for a afternoon hunt to play with it some and even managed to find a bear to film...
