Have the below Win Model 70 pre-64 action and McMillan pre-64 Monte Carlo stock. Will become 7X57 and scoped with Leupold 4X. My questions are regarding balance and proportion. Prefer 22-23" barrel. Any pictures/links would be much appreciated if similar builds are accessible.

Action, Jewell trigger, Talley bases & rings are unchangeable.

With the stock&action I have, what barrel contour and length balances/proportional?

I really like the Winchester FWT contour barrel. Which McMillan stock offers slim forearm, open grip, no cheek piece? Again, balance and proportioned to this action & FWT barrel contour at 22" ? It must have rubber recoil pad.

Thank you kindly for sharing your experience and opinions. My goal is a well balanced and proportional 22" rifle. With the action/trigger/rings&bases at 50.4oz, my main goal isn't total overall weight.

After having and owning almost a dozen 7x57's I would go w/ what you have for a beautiful rifle. I would use a barrel that would finish around .65 @ 22inches. I would not wait 6 months to a year for a barrel...there are just too many other good barrels out there besides the ones that are that far behind. A barrel that will finish out at .65 or a little less with what you have should put you around 7.8-7.12 lbs...a nice place to be. Don't forget to have your chamber cut a litttle long 2.95-3.00 so you can seat your bullets out a little farther than normal. powdr

A side bar question: What are the colors and ratio's on the McM? Looks like black and olive in equal portions? I am working a a McM for my Ruger 7x57 also!

Thanks

Not certain, I ordered it through gunsmith and he ordered from McMillan & specified color ratios.
I think a fwt barrel with that stock will be butt heavy. Slimmer stocks would include the compact and fwt stock, in edge technology if you want a fwt barrel to balance at all.

And do realize that only a 23" barrel is acceptable here. laugh

Yep, I'd go with the mcm edge and a fwt barrel contour. My pre 64 M70 7x57 (although in a banser) is set up like that and it balances/handles very nice. With talley lwts and a swaro Z3 3-9x36 it weighs just a tad under 7 3/4 lbs.

for a good balanced rifle with a FW Barrel i would go with a 24 inch tube

I've got the same action, bases/rings and stock (in 14" LOP) as you do - but with the stock trigger. Here's a link to my rifle's specs if it helps you any:

What happened to the factory trigger?

As Pat said, to make a lighter barrel like that balance you will need to go with an Edge stock. Been there...

Think about a fwt contour 24 inches long, if it is a little muzzle heavy then cut it back to 23 or even 22 inches to achieve the balance.

Excellent, thank you for your advice. Will order Hunters Edge & FWT Krieger barrel. Next decision is new bottom metal.

Thinkin' the same thing... frown

But the rest sounds nice!I like the FW contour;handles like flash, balancs beautifully, and the Krieger will stay sub MOA easily.

I think I'd make a .280 instead.

Found sear and springs are available, so I'll buy those parts to be fit & installed with rest of project.
