Chime in w/your fav 6mm hunting round, OTHER than the typical 243 and 6mm.

The above are 2 great rounds in their own right no doubt. Curious about the others. Do tell of your rifle specs and any info on your bullet/powder choices.

Aalf and others, I know you have experience so chime in if you can on your experience w/any feedback, range or field success.
Hopefully darrenK will see this post. He has/had a 6mmBR that he used this year on antelope & it did really bad things to them. I think he is a big fan of the 6mmBR.
Me I go for the old .243:)
I've run both those two, but want to try something new, 'next time' both great rounds and I know they have reach in the field, easily thru deer and I know many elk fall also.
I got a 6BR, have had two, and a 6x47L. The 6x47 is a non-feed issue..I like them both but if I had to have just one it would be the 6x47L.
My new favorite is on the low end of the spectrum -- 6x45.

I sat beside my daughter and watched her dispatch two deer rather efficiently this year. No bells and whistles, no warp speed, it just worked extremely well. This wouldn't be my choice for long range, but I feel comfortable using it on a deer out to 200ish yards.

Mine is a 700 with a stainless Douglas barrel. It's in a McMillan Mountain Rifle stock currently. I plan on it seeing lots of field time in years to come....

6x47L about my favorite case out there. I like the small primers, makes for a very thick and tough case head. It is very hard to loosen the primer pockets in those cases.
Short action - had a TCU in 21" Bullberry in mid 90s, loved it, but went BR later for longer range. TCU or 45s sure are quiet, and mild mannered, inc. ears. FUN to shoot, cheap...free brass!

Eddy - sounds like Geraci has rubbed off on you. Can you speak to the 47 over the XC, as to brass life, as I know Lapua, but not much about the Norma XC.

Maybe Aalf can chime in on his latest results w/his Dasher, set up as a repeater IIRC.

Recall Speedy Gonzales sending me a few emails, and pics of a friend using the 47L, 115s were DEATH to Tx Hogs....seems they shoot like lasers.
I love the 6-250. It shoots little bug holes w/ smaller varmint bullets and sub-MOA groups w/ big game bullets like the the 90 NBT, 100 CL, and even 95 gr VLD.
6mm-204, one of my go to coyote calling rigs. 58gr V-max and 55gr NBT's both leaded and unleaded DRT and usually a decent pelt. 55gr at 3700fps
Another 6x45 fan

But I'd not mind a XC
my favorite is the 6mm Rem over all that are listed
I'm kind of a 6 fan. I have a 6x47, 6MM Wasp, 2, 243 Ackley's, 2, 243 Winchesters, a 6MM Ackley, a 6MM BR, and 2, 6-284's. Depending on what you shoot a 6-284 fills a lot of needs.

I got to spend last weekend in western North Dakota with a pretty dedicaed 6.5-284 shooter, killing a few coyotes, I think the next rifle he builds just might be a 6-284.
Interesting thread, as I'm sitting on a 6mm 8-twist barrel right now, and still undecided as to what to build.

I have a standard face bolt, so was thinking 6BR.

I also have a small bolt face, so thinking 6x45 or 6x47 on that action. (I'm also thinking of using that action for another 223, non-AI version, so there's a lot of the indecision right now).

Anybody care to comment on those last two (6x45 and 6x47) specifically compared against each other?

In my case, it will be one of those three.
I have had fun the last few years with the 6mm-284. Made two.

One is heavy (20 lbs) with a 28" Bartlein 5R 1 in 7.5 twist. The other is a lightweight Rem 700 rechambered 24" 243 Win. The heavy shoots the newish 105 Berger target hybrid 3400 fps, the lightweight shoots the 55 gr nos bt at 4175 fps. Used Lapua brass.

Have a second Bartlein 5R 1 in 8 twist waiting for the heavy barrel to die. It has close to 1000 rounds and still going strong.

Love my GAP 6mm Crusader ! Close to a Ackley Imp, but has a 32 degree shoulder and a longer neck. Wicked accurate and the coyotes hate it ! Grin....

105 Amax at 3301 fps here in the 307

How did you guys manage to shoot holes all around the edges? smile
I lub me some 6mmBR. However, when feeding is a concern, I will look elsewhere. It does perform well though on medium-sized game. I've out the hurt on a number of Antelope with that cartridge, and with the right bullet it is wicked.

I have a new tube screwed on to one of my rifles in 6XC. Can't wait to see how it performs.
My favorite 6mm target round is the 6mm Rem. International.

Bought a new 40X in the 60's so chambered, wore out the barrel and had a new barrel put on with the same chamber and 1-10" twist and restocked it with the stock shown below.

The rifle was/is used for 200 yd. and 300 meter position target shooting.

And.....Red Bull for breakfast... cool

Dober
Have to try some Red Bull, look how many times he hit!

Good shooting, rifle and injun.
I love my 6-06 ackley
85 gr partitions with AA3100 55.0 grains 3058 fps
3 shots one hole
Is that velocity right? Seem really slow for thast load.
Ran across this cartridge the other week.

Looks like a well thought out set up.
Anybody tried one of these ?

I did some reading on the 6mmcrusader over at snipers hide -that too looks real good .
I have a 22-250 that Mickey Coleman built for me -I just can't get excited w/it = 1-12tw barrel should have at least went w/a 1-8tw and shoot 75-80gr amax or vld's.
Anyway planning on rebarreling it to a 6mm of some type.
Good thread !
Mike
As far as hunting, I've worked with a couple 6 Rems and liked them, but my 6-06 is gaining fast. 257Wby style trajectory with little recoil.

The two 6mm's in my stable are the 6x47 (the original one, .222 Rem Mag necked up) and the 6-284.
Still building the 6-284 but the 6x47 is an impressive cartridge for its size and recoil.
6mm PPC.

That's another cartridge I've thought about building .
Have a CZ 527 221fb that I love-so thought about getting a 7.62x39 carbine and making it a 6ppc coyote calling rig.
Just too busy.
I have a few 6mm Rems that I like a lot, along with a few 243 Wins that I like too.

However...

I am in the middle of having a 6mm BR and a 6x47 built right now as well.

I was set on the 6BR, but my gunsmith buddy was set on the 6x47.

So.... after too much thinking and rationalizing, I shipped him an extra action and extra barrel, and quit worrying about it. laugh
6x62 Freres (9.3x62 necked down to 6mm).

Well, I'm kinda surprised the 243 WSSM hasn't been mentioned. Then again, maybe not with the undeserved bad rap the WSSM cartridges have been given. I'm sure most who subscribe to the poor reputation haven't owned one.

I have a factory A-Bolt in 243 WSSM. Varmint Stalker. It has been one of the most accurate rifles in the safe, including customs. My longest kill to date is with the 243 WSSM and it continues to smoke schitt way out there. It's a 10 twist factory barrel (Chromed). When it dies, a 7 or 8 twist WSSM should be the ticket for sending 105's or 115's

Same case capacity as the 243 Winchester, one grain less than the 6mm Remington, yet produces 100 to 200 fps more velocity.

It's my dedicated coyote rifle but I've killed everything from prarie dogs to mule deer with it.

Nice pics/hunts, good posts by all.

Never not liked a WSSM performance, wish they had done them in a 6.5, they look pretty cool. Brass supply was my only concern.

Heard the initial reports on poor bore life was later found correlated to lack/improper cleaning.

6BR 12 twist

6XC 8 twist

both heavy s/shot Savage builds for LR p/dogs
What are your thoughts in a .243 AI vs .243 WSSM? I don't know a whole lot about either one but the 6mms are the next group of cartridges i'm looking to learn about and i'de love to sponge up as much information as I can! Thanks

Keep your barrel builder's phone # on speed dial..

Especially if you are planning on a high volume rd count rifle...

My 6BR has 7K+ rds down the tube and still going strong...

the 38 gr charge 6XC is running just fine too..not quite 7K rds...yet

One thought also is to consider cost of brass & dies for the project
My first 6BR and also a 6TCU in 12t. All 6mm since, 8t.

Last shot BOTH 66/68s into 1/4" at 200 yds for 3 shots, AND did the same w/105 Amax's.

Never again will I build a 6mm w/anything other than an 8 twist, just proven to do whatever I need done. No doubt, my 12t BR shot TNTs tight, 4 of 5 in 1.5" at 415 yds...nothing wrong w/that for my shooting...but I LIKE the option of shooting bullets over 85/87s.
My nod goes to my 6mm BR, 10 twist, 87 grain V Max

Second fav is the 6x45, 14 twist, 55 grain V Max

Both built on 700's and both wear Bartlein barrels.
How bout one of these?

My vote goes for the 6x47 Lapua. Here's mine.
