Most of the time, to drill a new firing pin hole so the firing pin protrusion is a tight fit so primer metal won't flow into the gap. Also to improve firing pin strike accuracy especially if the firing pin hole is slightly off center of the primer when striking. In a few instances, the bolt face will be rough or damaged by escaping gases from damaged or blown primers and needs to be either faced off or, in severe cases, bushing the bolt face. I'm pretty sure I haven't hit all the reasons but I think these are the main reasons for bolt bushing...
Actually now I’m crying laughing!! Just got off the horn with Steve, absolutely no accuracy benefit to bushing a firing pin.. none of my rifles crater primers or blow primers, that’s why I’ve never paid attention to it.... he did say Greg is the man to do it...

Jud congrats did you ask what they use to break records? It ain’t a rem and if it was the pin would have been bushed.
Wow, that's pretty severe. There's a couple of guys I know who had similar issues, but not that bad. Except one of the rifles was a Merkel double barrel (side by side) in 7x65R - the primer extrusion would stop the action being opened easily and took a solid whack to break it open.
Greg sure does a great job, every 223 AI that I own has bushed bolts, the round is fast and likes pressure. 223, 6 BR's, 6 XC!, 6 Dasher!, 6x47 lapua, and 6.5x47 all have bushed bolt heads.
Great does more than just bush the bolt head, adjusts or replaces firing pin & spring, checks bolt ID.
A guy on a budget that is experiencing primer flow, can go to a very thick cup primer. Of course, choice of primer has a dramatic effect on the accuracy of a particular load.
At one time, PTG sold over size firing pins, but this gets complicated in taking your bolt apart and fitting a proper size firing pin in your over size bolt head.
I don't like Sako or M16 type extractors in my rem bolts unless absolutely necessary, those extractors can become missiles if you ever blow a primer, and I have more than a few on Rem 722's, 700's, and 40X's that I bought used.
When you blow a primer or pierce a primer, the firing pin is blown backwards at warp speed, and this can break light target triggers that have three levers. I have had several Shilen 2 oz triggers break, a jewel, and several Harts over the years. Going from 75* to 95* on p. dog towns, letting a round cook in the chamber jacks pressures sky high, thus blown and pierced primers. If you ever pierce a primer, you have to be concerned about where that little round circle of primer thickness ends up in your action...in the bolt races, magazine, trigger group? That little piece of primer cup can and will make your rifle inoperable at the worst possible moments!
Thin cup primers:
cci 400 Fed 205 205M-M stands for Match, not magnum Rem 6 1/2
Thick cup primers:
CCI 41-specifically designed to prevent slam fires in AR's CCI 450-mag primer, and may blow your groups cci BR-4 Rem 7 1/2
I have NEVER sent Greg a bolt that uses large rifle primers, and the 257 Weatherby's have been the worst, everyone of them craters primers in the loads that I shot in custom barrels. Heavy Primer flow in the 257 Weatherby was normal, and I never popped a primer shooting Fed 215's.
So, if you have a choice of using small rifle primer brass vs large rifle primer brass, consider the cost of having Greg bush the bolt when using small primer brass due to the thickness of the small rifle primer cups.
Totally legal in Seattle. It’s called mutual combat. As long as no bystanders are harmed or surrounding property damaged.
SMS 12A.06.025 - Fighting.
A. It is unlawful for any person to intentionally fight with another person in a public place and thereby create a substantial risk of: 1. Injury to a person who is not actively participating in the fight; or 2. Damage to the property of a person who is not actively participating in the fight.
B. In any prosecution under subsection A of this Section 12A.06.025, it is an affirmative defense that: 1. The fight was duly licensed or authorized by law; or 2. The person was acting in self-defense.
Luckily for you,Imagination and Pretend are free...so you can "afford" to "contribute". Congratulations?!?
Few things funnier, than a Brokedick Thief trying to "talk" rifles.
Hint.................
Ya I barely get by. LOL. The new titanium will hold glass you can only dream of. But it’s funny as shît your pards have some so you get pictures of them.
figure $60,000 in attorney fees before you would be cleared of prosecution, then the civil suits starts.
Take a zanex, lots cheaper
Atleast within the city of Seattle I have a hard time figuring anyone could get anywhere on a civil suit RE: a videotaped fight where both parties consented and the winning party stopped when the losing party said uncle.
It’s been done even in the presence of Seattle police.
greg also does another type of bushing on bolts which is what I thought this thread was about. He adds eliptical cams which center the bolt and take up the tolerances as you close the bolt. There are 2 of them on the front and back of the bolt itself. I guess most people call these borden bumps. When you have a barrel done by greg its chambered to a dummy round. you also pick your neck diameter as well. he chambers and throats in 2 processes. I don't know anyone else doing this. everyone else just reams it out to the reamer they have for that chamber and you get what you get. its too bad greg has like a 18 month wait these days.
I personally would still buy a custom action rather than have him do the full truing process. I do have a remington that has the gretan full meal deal done to it, but again custom action would be better still.

Many gunsmiths chamber and throat in two steps in order to produce a required throat length. When I first started gunsmithing, all of our chambers were done that way and there was a lot of experimentation with throat length as well as configuration. There were a lot of 'smiths who felt that doing the chamber in two steps could lead to misalignment. I figured, if you couldn't get it straight twice, you probably couldn't get it straight once either. As with all things, both systems were shown to work well. Sometimes I won, sometimes someone else won. When I was in my twenties, I knew it all. Forty-some years later, I'm not nearly so smart. I cut chambers both ways but, to tell the truth, I prefer to cut the throat separately. Does Tannel use a machined sleeve on the bolt or inserts? Just curious. GD
Here is another guy I have worked with that does a great job for around $85, quick turn around. This guy goes by Carlsbad on accurate shooter, and Jerry is a heck of a machinist and great all around guy to work with.
Sorry for the delay my smith was slow to send the pictures that were begged for. This one is going to be a nosler 28 and the ring was really ugly ejection sucked. But he can literally fix anything. LOL some day I will catch on. ps that’s a bushing as well.

Keith, thanks for the endorsement. I go by Carlsbad here also. I'll post some photos later. My business is word of mouth only. I don't want a backlog. I generally turn around a bushing or extractor replacement in less than a week.
A couple of notes about bushing.
1. Bushing isn't generally required because of a loose firing pin fit. Bushing is required because modern high pressure cartridges extrude brass into the firing pin hole. The area of the hole goes as the diameter of the hole squared so reducing the diameter reduces the force on the brass by the square of the ratio. So bushing a firing pin down to a nominal .062" allows the brass to have enough strength to bridge the firing pin hole and no extrusions (aka cratering) or punctured primers occur unless your load is excessively hot and you'll probably have other problems first. 2. Bushing doesn't affect accuracy other than cratering can cause hard cycling which will knock you off target for the next shot so it can show you down significantly. Bushing does affect the long term viability of your boltface. living with cratering will eventually erode your firing pin hole and you'll have to have it bushed then anyway. I'm always in favor of preventive maintenance rather than corrective.
Send me a private message if you want a quote but standard prices are $85 including return shipping for bolt bushing for remington or savage. $95 for others. Some hardened bolts I can't do and keep the price reasonable. Sako or M-16 style extractor install is $145 including extractor and return shipping.

Crying laughing as some can only wish. PS my smith will be on site in 24 hours to drink good whiskey and enjoy some killing facts dinner and all prepared by the better half. Hint.
I offered him a face to face and he cried and bitch all the way to the top it’s funny when a chicken [bleep] gets to realize a man his his number. LOL. This ignore is just the ticket.
