Won a Stevens 200 on gunbroker for dirt cheap. I have no use for another 270 so the idea is to unscrew the barrel and put a new one on. What do you guys think? 22-250 8 twist or a wildcat of some sort?

I’d go 7 or 8 twist, throat for and shoot very long bullets.

6.5-06 or 6-06, two rounds that would better utilize the long action.

Depends on what guns the OP already has and what he’s looking to accomplish.

One off that list will smoke a 50 gr bullet at 4K fps.

That should put a crimp in about anything you’d shoot at.

You can block the box, get a SA follower and spring.

Or tweak it. I have a .257R on a LA 700 that feeds as slick as any bolt gun I have. A master smith set it up.

I use a 40 grain in my .22/6mm and it done be fast!

IIRC JB compared two Shaw rifles, one chambered in each round. Accuracy not enough difference to make a difference.

Swift is a semi rimmed, I think you can find a slicker feeding case.

Elk’s round will perform with the Swift.

I would think you could go up to 75 gr. with that twist.

My 8 twist .22-250 does great with 75's and 80's.

The 75 gr. Scirocco is a good one for hogs and WT's.

The extra speed will help to stabilize but IME is generally a weak substitute for twist.

50-55 gr at 4K fps is a slam dunk and wicked. I think you’d be good up to 75 gr in a high performance round with 9 twist.

The more I think about your project the more I’d lean toward Elks set up.

But, the OP is wanting to fit a 9 twist .223 take off barrel, chambered for a high stepping .224 round.

With that, I'd still recommend Elk's 22/6mm suggestion. That round will run with the .220 Swift and feed a lot slicker thru a bolt action.

After a point, you get into diminishing returns with the .224 bore., the 6mm case being about right, IMO.

I called Savage about my Stevens 200. They confirmed my theory that the model was to use up old Savage 110 parts. Mine was made in ~2009. I have two stocks for it, a plastic stock for the heavy night vision and a heavy stock with a single shot follower.

6mm-06 or a 25-06AI, would be my vote.

Why not a nice 6 Rem or 6 Rem Imp? Should be long enough to feed, and it's a great classic round.
