Picked one up today in a even swap for my Marlin 336 in .35 Remington with a illuminated Bushnell Gold series scope.

The 99F that I now have is in pretty pristine condition with a few scratches on the stock but otherwise solid in all respects.
It’s D&T, made in 1964, gold trigger and with the open sights. Bore is excellent. 308 Winchester caliber. Tang safety.

Swivel studs are front and rear,,,may not be original??

The old gent that I swapped with said it really kicks hard, he’s 77 yrs old.

Best place to by bases and mounts for it?

ETA:
Thanks Gents

Sling studs wouldn't be original. Common to see them added though.

Leupold makes a one piece base for the 99, it works well. Weaver has 2 piece sets, though they had some bad ones go out in the last 5 years or so that are off. Most Weavers work fine, just a heads up. Weaver bases are the #14 and #19.

I much appreciate your advice about the Weavers and the identification #s for them.

As the receiver on these appears to be very stout enough I wouldn’t think that a one piece base would be a “have to” type thing for it.

I’m planning on a fixed 6X for it, probably a Meopta or a Trac Toric if they offer one in fixed pwr.

This will certainly wind up on down the line in the hands of grandson #2 and I want him to have something of value, Sporting wise.

Would you hazard a fair estimate of what this is worth?

Again, many thanks.

Condition is everything.

Hard to even say without gun in hand or at least pictures.

High condition post million serial number rifles like yours have developed a following recently....

Very nice , Hanco.
Where did you get the weaver bases ?

And what scope is that.
Sweet package there !!

Thank you, Midway. 14&19 bases. Got the rings there also. They make offset inserts for the rings in case you can’t get enough windage or elevation.

Good shooting to you! 3x9 Leupold VXIII

I had a Leupold base on a 358, couldn't keep the rear ring tight to the base. Swapped it for Weavers and have had no problems since. So gloves or not, I prefer the Weaver bases.

Hey Old Toot, check these mounts out. They're worthy of consideration.

If the condition of the two rifles was equal then it was probably a square trade for you both. They are both centerfire lever guns fully capable of getting the job done. However I might give a slight edge to the Savage only on account of Marlin having made a boat load of 336s making the 99 a tad bit more scarce on the used gun market. What do you think? Was the trade a good one?

Good points there and I’m happy with the trade.

I had 485$ total tied up with the Marlin,

So, value wise........

I have those old weaver pivot mounts on a ‘66DL in 308 with a 4x Leupy Mark 8 on it. All period correct to the gun. It all works perfectly. The pivot mounts surprised the hell out of me. Never seen anything like them and they hold zero, surprisingly. In my sparing use of that feature. Good trade. I think you got the best of it. Mine was in pretty high condition when I bought it. It went 760. That was a few years ago now. Have had a couple people offer me more. Nahhh, I’m not selling it. The pressed checkering on mine k Ickes down the value, but then the people who offered to buy it didn’t seem to care. Neither do I.

I've been using the Weaver tip off's for years on The 284 That Kills Schit and they work perfectly even to longer ranges.

About 350 yards

346 yards

175 yards

Also had them on this 358

I like your last sentence, Mr. Harry.

Not anywhere near period correct but I have in the box a Bushnell 4200 Elite 2x10, plex with the Firefly reticle that’s gonna sit on top. So, I’m gonna try that first before springing for a 6X fixed.
Posted By: Mr_Harry Re: Savage 99F advice - 11/22/20
If you decided to go to a fixed 6, at that point, you might really want to look into those pivot or tip-off weavers. They’re neat. Low. It’s great. Depending on what kind of distances you’re shooting, or your son to pass it on too. At fixed 4, I haven’t had the situation happen, yet, where I wanted to push the scope off to kill something. But, 6x, you might.

For $485.00 into your Marlin I'd say you made a good trade. As for a scope, I'd go with the best glass you can get for that gun. if you are going to hunt then it's a tool and why handicap yourself with a less than adequate tool. Get a good modern scope that falls within a price range appropriate for that 99. I think a good fixed 4 power Leopold from any of their line of scopes would work fine. Just my two cents worth however when adjusted for inflation may not add up to a plugged cent.

Gents, another question on this rifle please.

The tang safety is “very” easy to operate between the safe and fire positions.

Has anyone here ever had occasion to make theirs more tight or have a more positive feel when switching?

If so, what and how did you do it?

I haven’t disassembled mine yet to see what the possibilities might be to firm this up for a more positive, definitive feel.

Thanks in advance, Gents.

The old man might have told you right. I once had a post mil 308. It was the most miserable rifle I’ve ever shot. I don’t know why, but it’s recoil just hurt. I am accustomed to shooting high power rifles. This was the only one I found objectionable.

I have been using the Leupold 6x42 for an awful long time and have now switched to the Meopta 6x42 and most recently a Kahles 6x42. I have have shot deer at less than 10 yards with both the Leupold and Meopta and looking through the Kahles at that range i dont think it will have any problems either

I shot it and it’s plenty stout with 180 gr Core-Loks. I had an unopened Limbsaver slip on recoil pad that fit it like a glove and got my LOP correct.

That pad vs the bare steel butt plate is like night and day difference and so much better.
