My LGS has two Savage 99's in 30-30. One is a 20 or 22" and the other is a 24 or 26" barrel. They're both in reasonably good shape. One is straight grip the other pistol grip. They want just under $1K each. Are they worth that and what if anything do I need to know about 99's in 30-30? I've only ever had them in 300 Sav before.

What they are worth is a combination of condition, what comparable 99s are going for, and how much does that mean to your pocket book, All 30-30s were pre-war guns and the two you asked about may be any of the variety of varients Savage made from pratically day one with the 99. But given what you told us, the first question beyond condition I would need to ask in diagnosing the type and value of the two you mentioned is about the barrel. Are the barrels factory stock in length or have they been cut by previous owners? I wouldn't want to start calling something a carbine or a short rifle if a barrel had been cut down to 20-22-inches or, likelwise, anything else if a barrel had been cut down to 24-26-inches from an early "Long Tom."

Both barrels had their original front sights

Originality, condition and how bad one wants one.
A couple pics would get some valuable opinions and advice.

,,, and examine the wood closely along the top of the tang where the stock meets the receiver. Many have developed cracks in the stock at that location over their lives.

The .30-30 never had corrosive ammo did it? Or maybe mercury primers were the problem?

Non-mercuric primers weren't introduced into the civilian market until the 1920's, so all 1899s were made prior to their introduction. Remington introduced their Kleanbore primers in 1927.

Nothing shoulders quite like my model H 30-30 .
Posted By: Rick99 Re: 30-30 in a model 99 - 08/24/21
We need:
1) serial number range
2) takedown or solid frame (if TD remove forearm and verify that brl indexes correctly ...not loose)
3) checkered or not
4) order a copy of Rory's (Calhoun) new "Savage 99 Pocket Reference". Find at www.savagelevers.com wink

I'm close to a deal on a Savage 99 30-30 serial number 1099xx with octagon barrel. I have pictures but I can't get them to post on here. Anyway I'll know tomorrow whether we're going to reach a deal or not. The rifling is sharp it is however drilled and tapped

Model 1899B dating to summer of 1910 (in general, any specific rifle may have finished later than normal). D&T hurts the price, but the 30-30 bumps the price over a 303. Good luck!

For the pictures, have you tried uploading them into a post in the Image Gallery that's down towards the list of forums? It should handle larger pictures. Then just tell us you uploaded them there.

I tried that. It tells me my pics are too large
Posted By: iskra Re: 30-30 in a model 99 - 08/29/21
I'm sure no Savage expert here! But...Echoing an above Post, I'd want to know what those extra barrels represent! Doing some research after I bought a 30-30, found out mine was the early 1899 from 1908, with "square bolt" aft design. So there's one difference. Don't know more or less valuable, but decided I prefer it! Barrel is 26" which I believe 'standard' in such rifle.
Pix below.

Good luck & Best!
John
