quite a few guys here with 50 or more guns in their collections, a couple with many more. They'll read, critique, and glean what they will from others, yet post none of their own questions, photos, hunts, insights, etc.

Why is that?

As a community of collectors or shooters, we all gain when members contribute.
Posted By: Calhoun Re: There's - 10/26/21
I'm not sure I agree with that. Loggah posted a question this week about caliber markings in barrel addresses. Fug posted a list of 99DE and 99PE production a month ago. Fug sent pictures of bayonets for another thread recently.

But I will say that it doesn't seem that uncommon for larger collectors to post a question or pictures and get almost no feedback on it. 3 replies to a post about Roe Clark who served as Savage historian for 25 years? 4 replies to a post giving counts of DE's and PE's made each year?

A guy can get tired of posting important information and not getting any appreciation for it.

Larger collectors have probably seen more 99s and have fewer questions but more answers - and the questions they have are harder to answer.
Posted By: Calhoun Re: There's - 10/26/21
And I know GeneB has quite a few 22's.. grin
And he posts information, pictures and stuff all the time for people. Now, a lot of it is over the head of some of us, but he still puts it up for us.
Posted By: Lightfoot Re: There's - 10/26/21
Yeah, this isn't an easy issue to address. Not everyone is tech savvy or wants to 'put themselves out there'

If they come to the water hole they can drink or not from my perspective.

with my limited knowledge of 99's, I don't have much to contribute, however, I do ask ?'s

yet rarely post either. Sometimes, sure, but not often. One poster here has a great collection but all he does is grump about schit and complain about how we're all tightwads and won't spend any money. I should have him talk to my wife about that last one, she might have a different opinion.

and the questions they have are harder to answer.

of course. That's why the responses are few. But the questions elevate everyone's thinking even if no one can answer them. Imagine if all the forum dealt with was "what year is my 300 EG?" How long would people stick around? We all need fresh input to stimulate our thinking and hone our powers of observation. Maybe make us go dig out some guns to check for data points. Surely we haven't covered it all?JMO

Just thankful for what does show.

It's not up to them to serve you by thinking of questions you want to hear answers to.

It's up to everybody to ask questions. I put out a book about 3 months ago.. I don't recall a single person asking a question about anything in it in this forum. Really? 50+ models, 150+ variations, changed date ranges per year.. and no questions? Pretty much the same for David's book, and it's been out for 6 years.

Im on 4 different forums and it seems i spend half my life 1 finger typing on the computer !!!! I try and help when i know the answer, but my memory plays tricks on me at times!! blush blush crazy crazy Don

Do the experienced people here answer questions when you ask them?

I think the answer is obvious - yes, they do.

I wish there were more people who would ask questions, but blaming the lack of questions on the people who answer the questions isn't helpful.

I started off learning here by asking questions on auction guns after the auctions were done. A few of the questions led to us learning something new, a LOT of the questions led to me learning something new.

We just need more folks who will ask questions and not be worried that it makes them look inexperienced.

I haven't been a member long, but I've gotten some very helpful answers to questions, and seen some rifle/gear I never would have if not for the campfire.

I'm not the most knowledgable guy around by a far cry, but I try to post helpful/insightful info when I can.
Posted By: FUG1899 Re: There's - 10/26/21

Some times one has to think about how much time one wants to post questions or talk about a gun
like a 22 H.P. in CD deluxe only to be asked if you have a letter on it and when you say no than
we can't find it in a book so it must not be real well it may not be but when you go all over the
USA and find 4 of the same gun then how many letters do you think you need or you go to ROE
house and see his guns an when one you want comes up for sale buy it make a post about it
the only barrel band engraved with RC and in 38-55 than get a question asking how that can
be because they never made barrel band in 38-55 I could go on but what for!!!!

I'd love to see photos of those rare Savages. I couldn't add anything to the discussion but it would expand my knowledge. I can see why you wouldn't want to get jacked around for posting though. I just got jacked around and I had to step away before I said something I wouldn't even come close to regretting but would have felt really, really good to get off my chest. Held my tongue this time.

If we want the forum to thrive, we have to be willing to answer "The year your 99EG in 300 was made was ..." about 100 times for every rare or unusual rifle that shows up.

I'm on 3 facebook groups and 3 forums doing exactly that. Because quite frankly, between the attitude shown to new members here and how difficult it is for newbies to share pictures there's not many folks coming here any more.

Might want to rethink that Tom. I'm not letting that kind of crap go.

I've fixed broken guns for more than one person here, sent more than one stock sets for broken guns, taken apart my safe to get guns out of the back and then taken them apart and taken photos to get answers for guys that asked them, taken guys hunting, met guys for lunch and helped them when they toured Oregon. Sent one stock to a member here for recheckering then just ended up sending him the whole gun and letting him have it. Just because he's one hell of a nice guy.

Yeah, I'm disappointed to learn ya'll aren't here to serve me.

Hey, yesterday I was a liberal prick. Nothing new.

Question for you: Why did you start this thread asking why the collectors "read, critique and glean what they will from others" rather than ask "What can we do to increase participation from everybody?" Or even a "What kind of questions and gun info are people interested in hearing about?".

Then you followed it with a "Imagine if all the forum dealt with was "what year is my 300 EG?"?

I mean really... think about how you're phrasing everything.

I think everyone was able to do exactly that.

Post about a premil finished as a postmil - by a person with more than 50 rifles.
Post asking about calibers in barrel addresses - by a person with more than 50 rifles.
Post sharing watch fobs and stamps - by a person with more than 50 rifles.
Post about an uncatalogued 1980 99E in 250 - by a person with more than 50 rifles.
Post about numbers of DE's and PE's made per year - by a person with more than 50 rifles.

Just some of what large collectors have posted in the last month.

Trust me.. if these people are just here to glean info from your posts, they're doing it wrong.

Post on a NIB 99G - from a person with more than 50 rifles
Post on a NIB 99K - from a person with more than 50 rifles
Info on all the 99 serial number ranges that were skipped - from a person with more than 50 rifles

Still in the last 6 weeks. Could continue.

I tell you Fug, one of the reasons we loose folks to FB is because we are old, and they are young. I'm not a purist, I truly wish I could be, but my old hot rodding spirit comes through. I appreciate Roy's adventures. I almost cried when he offered me his 270 Titus, and I had to pass on it. I'm really excited with the .429 straight wall I'm playing with, on a 400 Whelen case, shortened, in a 99C. But these are just gun looney natural tendencies. Over on FB I see some of the most awful, ugly, abominations you can imagine, and they have 20 positive replies. The Levergun forum is worse. I guy posted pics of his true love, a Marlin with synthetic stock, picatiny, monster scope, and a can . Out of respect to his hard work and investment, I couldn't say I didn't even want to be in the same state as that thing, and every single reply was Yes, Love it, Where can I get one like it. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of great guys on FB, a lot from here, and a lot I didn't know. Some great knowledge there. Same with Leverguns. I've been talking to a guy in Sweden, I think, that took a moose with an 1895 Winchester. I wish a moose would kick me in the head for selling my 1895 Winny, made in 1910, 35 Winchester, bought from the original owner. FB reminds me of Star Wars, their ray gun pistols were 1896 Broom Handles. That's what a lot of the new generation want to make their Grand Dad's 1899 look like. The older guys on FB tend to know how to coddle them. Very shortly after I came here some one called me Stupid, or the question I asked was Stupid. So, I sent them a PM and asked ,"what did I do Stupid, So I don't do the Stupid thing again?" They responded laughing, said Stupid was probably a little strong, ignorant was probably more accurate, and went on to tell me the stupid thing I did, and they were right. I still get along just fine with that person. The kids don't want to know what we think, or if we are right, they just want some one to agree with them. I understand that too.

I would think many here collect Savage's other than 1899's or 99's we should hear more about them also
many of us collect other gun stuff how about talking to us about that, Savage for one made a lot of other
things who has some of that collectable stuff to talk about
Posted By: zcm82 Re: There's - 10/27/21
I've got a couple (well, 1 for sure and 1 that I think was Savage made) non-99 Savages, but for me, and I imagine a lot of other people the 99 and 110 are the first things that spring to mind.

I do have an old 22 I should get some pictures of for opinions on. It's some kind of economy store model single shot. I think it is a model 3 variation, but I'm no expert. It has no markings aside from 22 S-L-LR on the barrel. I'll have to look at it again to see if it even has a proof stamp, I don't recall seeing one. Very, very basic... in the white, and what is some kind of soft, even possibly pine stock that is about the most rough cut thing I've ever seen.
Posted By: Fireball2 Re: There's - 10/27/21
Going back to Lightfoots comment on guys not wanting to "put yourself out there", there's something to that.

When you post you run the risk of being put down, ridiculed, mocked, ignored, belittled, and any other manifestation of the deranged minds on the internet. I've heard guys say they don't want to sound stupid, etc. The more you post, the more the risk. No post, no risk. No risk, no grief.

Easier to just let someone else do the work and just read, staying in the shadows.

IMO, and it won't be popular and I'll probably get ridiculed for it, I think that's selfish. If you're willing to read and learn and let other people "put themselves out there" but you're not willing to help the forum with your own contributions, I label that lazy, complacent, indifferent, or selfish.

Guys that invest run risk, period. Invest in stock, risk. Invest in guns, risk. Invest in a forum, risk. Get a thick skin and get in the game. Everyone is better for it.

I could share pictures, and compare the action to an 870,

but I'm just interested in selling it.

I come here for the wealth of Savage experience and knowledge represented, which is generally very generously shared!! (Hello? Gene B!!), and I get considered responses to even some of my silliest questions. It's nice to know I'm not the only one thinking these thoughts..

Does anyone come here to be "recognized as a true (fill in the blank)" ?

I'm doing my best to hide who I really am..., especially when I get roped into stealing bricks from inside a fence in Utica!

I think I found why some of my pics post normal and some post the code. If I post it as it was first loaded to IMGUR, it will post fine, in this case upside down. If I edit it, and rotate it, right side up, it just posts the link. Don't ask me why, I don't understand these things.

Your link is NFG (not formatted good) It kicks a 404 error.
Posted By: Calhoun Re: There's - 10/28/21
The link has to end in ".jpg" or ".jpeg" or ".png" or something similar. The addition of the "?1" in the url breaks it for display here.

So what imgur gives you ends up like this:

[img]https://i.imgur.com/cfzV7Wl.jpg?1[/img]

If you remove the "?1" from the end, it will often work. So for this link https://i.imgur.com/cfzV7Wl.jpg you get:

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

Sometimes the link no longer works if you remove the trailing letters that are after the .jpg/.jpeg/etc, but you can add a "fake" .jpg ending. Just tack on "&.jpg" to your link. So for this link https://i.imgur.com/cfzV7Wl.jpg?1&.jpg you get:

How are you getting the image link? If you right click on the pic and 'copy image address' you get the correct link for posting. just add the image tags and it works.

Imgur has 6 choices. One says BBCODE(for message boards and forums), that's the one I click. 99% of the time it works fine. Now and then I'll post 4-5 pics and 3 will post the pic, and the others have the link. It just started doing this in the past few months. And, it only does it here. I'll look at the end of the link before I click it and see what I find.

Part of the reason I bought a 99 was this forum. I found one and received a lot of help from the usual suspects. Once I got it sorted and sighted in I was happy. At my age I probably won’t buy another unless it’s a smoking deal. Love the rifle but the other ones I would like are very expensive and living on SS it isn’t going to happen.

I still log on here 3 or 4 times a week to see what’s going on and what rare rifle someone got or if Roy killed another bear. I have limited knowledge compared to most people so I just read and enjoy the happenings on here.

I am pretty sure that a lot of people do the same, so to the regulars, keep posting we are out here enjoying the site.
Oh, and here is a picture of my only common, fun of the mill, everyone has one 99EG in 300 Savage. 😂😎

Joe, a moose would have to kick me in the head,IF I had a win 1895 and tried to sell it. Ken

I tell you Fug, one of the reasons we loose folks to FB is because we are old, and they are young. I'm not a purist, I truly wish I could be, but my old hot rodding spirit comes through. It's a good thing there are no Mooses in MD, my pea for a brain would constantly be rattling around like the one in my Dad's old chrome plated whistle.

My wife calls the two trees in the background the "goal posts". The two moose were dead center in front of the softwood tree. The one in the back was the bigger of the two. I waited for the front one to move so I could get a clear shot. But carry on, I don't want to bore anyone or steal the thread. Someone opened the door when moose was mentioned. Carry on.

A little deviation now and then keeps things from getting boring.
