This sold about 18 months ago, but had some interesting features.

As the first type, it doesn't have the roll stamps or checkering and they don't show the top of the receiver to show the extra d&t holes. But in this case we can be pretty sure it's a Spiegel since it's got the Spiegel studs and it has a Spiegel medallion set into the side of it. grin

Love the medallion, even if the gun is a bit rough. Few other interesting things on the gun caught my eye. The forearm and buttstock are both stamped EG - we see this occasionally, but not consistently afaik.

But, it also has a takedown barrel fitted to it. Hardly ever see this happen this late on a 99EG, most of them I remember seeing are earlier in the 30's.

And I'd love to know what's written on that piece of paper in the stock bolt hole.

Do we even have enough data to ID V1, V2,... ?
You may and I'm just unaware.

We've talked about "Spiegels";
w/wo studs
w/wo roll stamp
w/wo B&M D&T
w/wo emblem
EG stamps
Serial numbers/ranges
more....

With a filled in spread sheet with many examples these V numbers may be obvious and possibly in what order they occured.

Went there, did that.. grin

I'm sure the serial number ranges for the styles can be improved with more examples, but with Rick's data and Gene's catalogs and lots of digging and googling (thx Keith!) we found 5 different styles. The first and last styles don't have roll stamps, so it's very hard to spot these if you don't look on top of the receiver and see the extra holes.

Somehow I knew that was coming.

In my defense, I've only read your book cover to cover 3 times in the last month. Reading retention ratio may need improve.
Besides, I did whip out the book to double check before I commented. Naively only looked in the EG section. Weren't there some 99R Spiegels too??

Anyway, I have 377211, 22", 303, EG, front rec'r stamped EG, plain stocks, no roll stamp, no studs, has "B&M" D&T.
What do I have? EG #5?, Spiegel 0? ???

No studs but has the d&t?

These fall in with the few 99R's that we've seen with the d&t. We don't think they are Spiegel, but could very well be through another retailer or the work could have been done by the owner.

Yours is a mystery still needing to be solved. I tried to letter my 99R that is like yours, but the entry was blank in the ledger.

Spiegel only ever catalogued the 99H (thru 1936) and 99EG. In 1936 they show a 99B with crescent buttplate but call and describe it as a 99H. They specify the 99H couldn't be fitted to a scope.
The D&T is just like all the other "B&M" holes we've seen. Spacing, location, etc.

Serial number is in the same range as Spiegels, but I suspect it is an EG that was sent to one of the early scope manufacturers for fitting per manufacturers instructions. Unless Savage did the D&T themselves.

Hmmm,...did anyone notice SpiEGels before?

NEAT!
I won't trouble anyone with my ongoing questions about factory correct Spiegle receiver D&T, but I have a recent Spiegle acquisition to add to the data set, who should I send the specs to?

Post them for all to see.

Given that most of these rifles were produced after Savage stopped recording info in the log books prevents us from knowing if they were sold to other than Speigel.

The only one I have heard of that has been lettered was from 9/1937 and it was shipped to Speigel, D&T'd with swivels, only.

Not hunting today, too blowy.., or maybe I'm just too comfortable by the stove.. anyway, finally snapped some pictures of my Spiegel EG style 1, 356,816, which puts it before Rory's production numbers, but I think these Spiegel-specific statistics are still evolving.

I agreed to buy this without realizing it was a Spiegel, thinking it was just another Dicked&Traded early EG, grey rat (both of these samples have the front receiver ring after-market D&t'd for weaver #19). I also notice on both of these Spiegels, that the lever loop has lost all their case color, while the inside lever bow still has plenty, seems an unusual difference.

So, consistent features:
-300 Savage x 24", drilled for barrel block under the rear sight elevator (nice thumb-tab elevator),
-rear tang drilled for lyman scope block around the cocking indicator, (with weaver #14 mounted using one forward screw, cocking indicator visible through rear hole)
-flat bottom sling loop&studs, (forearm stud is the forearm mounting screw), no number stamp on forearm
-front of receiver stamped EG, "Q" stamp on lever boss (...hmmm...)
-SVG butt plate & butt serial number stamped,

This other Spiegel rifle is style #3 (pistol grip checkered and roll stamped), 380,789 (with "3" on the lever boss, conclusive that this is style 3!!)
- 303 x 22" (barrel block D&T under rear sight)
- (note the brass plated safety tab on the early style 1)
- receiver also has aftermarket D&T on front ring
- forearm, butt, and butt plate are number stamped, front of receiver has "E" "G" stamped

Interesting. Marlin engraved/stamped the logo in the butt stock on their Speigel models.
