Need one for project. Any condition. Would also borrow to clone- with deposit to protect lender.
Posted By: Rick99 Re: 99 Barrel Band Wanted - 03/25/24
What do you need for the cloning... pictures, dimensions...? The last version would be easiest to clone as it uses a standard rifle butt plate. The barrel band will be the hard part.
The barrel band itself is the part I need.

That might cost you a whole gun. wink

I just hate the thought of taking apart one and sending off the BB. I don't think I could sleep at night.
I have a couple fore stocks, and am making a prototype clone of the band from aluminum. It will probably be a flat band. Any pics or drawings would be very much appreciated.
Fireball, how about a couple close up pics. i have reverse engineered the inside dimensions, so a good view of the exterior will probably get me where I am going. I did not know how rare these are.

I'll get a pic of the BB on my 1940 vintage 99H
Thank you, David!

Unfortunately I haven't mastered photos for this forum.
David's photos don't really show it, but as you can imagine the top (barrel part) and bottom (wood part) have different shapes. The top follows the barrel contour until it gets to the wood. Then the bottom part follows the contour of the wood. Thus there is a transition at the barrel/top of the wood interface. The band bends somewhat there, but there is also a significant machined "bump" on the inside of the band. David, if you can take a close up photo of the barrel/top of the wood interface looking from the muzzle end, I think that would be very helpful for Sam.

I haven’t any direct experience with the technology, but maybe someone could scan a barrel band into a 3D printer and the “copy” could be used as a model for reproducing a steel version. That is for those so inclined and with the skills and talents for doing so.

Here are a few pictures with measurements, also the slot milled in the barrel.

Under found a strange proof mark I remember much talk about the MP stamp this ain’t that

Wow! I am overwhelmed at your responses. Thanks to each of you. I now have enough information to support this one-off project. I will share the results, which will now be better than would have been possible without your help.

Is it possible to use a Ruger no3 band?
Might be. If the barrel is about .75" and the fore arm about 1.1" wide, it might work.

I've often wondered how close a Winchester 94 band would be. I used to have a barrelband forearm but sold it toRoy years ago. I never did check out the compatbility of the Winchester band.
Posted By: JeffG Re: 99 Barrel Band Wanted - 03/27/24
I gathered a bunch of variations of full-stock (front band, no top hand-guard), barrel bands from vintage military rifles, hoping to find a near match. Ultimately some were close, and sturdy enough to re-shape, bend&grind.., none were pretty.

I think the shorter route would be to shape one from scratch from an aluminum block (, or brass might be cool, with a matching brass butt plate! Savage 99H Golden Boy)

Sam, i can take one off one of mine if you would like. Let me know.
Triple deuce, no need to disassemble. I have the info I need. Thanks much for the offer.

Jeff, I like the idea of brass, thank you. I had planned to use a plastic buttplate, because I have one that fits reasonably well, but I like your idea better.

I will let it out of the bag that this is going on a 360 BH. I had planned a Picatinny rail, but now that will change as well. Just switched from pistol grip to straight, so my percent complete keeps going down.

other pics probably covered it but here is mine from the front, side and bottom

" I had planned to use a plastic buttplate, because I have one that fits reasonably well,"

What model is the butt stock you are using?
Great shot of the cusp, David, thank you.
The butt is a 3rd party takeoff. Its color and grain are reasonably close to those of the fore end. My available inventory is dwindling.

Here is what it looks like so far. Aluminum prototype has revealed several areas where I need to make changes before i go brass.

U R welcome
Posted By: Rick99 Re: 99 Barrel Band Wanted - 03/29/24
What butt plate was on the stock? Has it been cut?
It is an aftermarket repro, and not a very good one; has not been cut. It had no plate when I got it in a lot sale. It is very slightly proud to a 99E plastic buttplate, so that is what I would use until I can find a more appropriate buttstock.

Thanks.
Posted By: JeffG Re: 99 Barrel Band Wanted - 03/30/24
That looks like a pretty faithful rendering Sam, the only thing that the aluminum one seems to need is finish surfacing and the cross screw. I thought you might be commenting on wood being proud of the bottom of the band, but I see in the original sample photos that's the way it was designed. You could almost leave the perimeter thickness over-sized and shape it to the specific forearm, like fitting stocks to receiver shape, (flat-band golden Boy??)
Posted By: JeffG Re: 99 Barrel Band Wanted - 03/30/24
the bottom of the band (maybe..?) follows the taper of the forearm (front to the right in CTW photo, looks thinner). Mine only fits one way if I recall, so it may just be following either the barrel taper or the wood taper,

and the screw head is always(?) on the right side

"...and the screw head is always(?) on the right side."

I think they left the factory with the screw head on the left. Same as the screws in the side of the receiver and the lever boss.
One thing I learned while making the aluminum mockup was that the wood I have is not perfectly symmetrical (Go figure, it's a Savage) so I have tailored the brass one to the wood. Because of an error on my part (drill walk), I may need to bring the screw in from the left. I was blessed with receipt of several revenue-producing jobs this week, so playtime may need to wait. Thanks to you and all who have helped me get this far.

Nice work Sam. Sticking with brass or will end with steel?
Not sure yet. I am not happy with my current buttstock. If I do not find a better one, I will stick with brass and make a buttplate to match. I am still hoping for both a better stock and a storebought band. BTW, the barrel is that model 70 300 H&H you gave me . It had been cut off at the case neck, which made it viable for the 360 chambering. Not many 99 barrels can be recut for the 360.

I have built rifles around a receiver, a barrel, and even a buttstock. This is my first built around a fore stock.[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]

What are the odds that one of the gun heads here on the fire has a BB in a box of parts?

Slim to none. I have never seen a BB loose in the wild.

...nor I.
Here is today's status. Still looking for a buttstock.

Lookin' good! Is that one made in your shop?
I bought a bag of 3 that looked close, and modified this one to fit the wood and metal. The wood portion was too large, so I squeezed it in to fit and held it there while I plunge milled the barrel portion from .670 to .740" and it fits pretty well. I have a couple tool marks to remove, and the screw is too long so I will cut 3 threads off it, then reblue it all. Interestingly, all 4 of the bands I bought, including a 336 Marlin, were for a .670 barrel and my orphan barrel is .740". This is the only one that had enough meat around the barrel to allow such brutal milling. I did not want to recontour my barrel, especially after reboring it to .358".

My search for a better buttstock continues, and I probably should expand it from just H stocks to any straight grip carbine stock.
