Looking at a Speigle edition 99 in 303. Can someone fill me in on rifle. I would put condition at around 50 - 70 %.
Do a search using spiegle and 3 pages of info will come up. Tom
303s are hard to find, but at 50%-70% the value is going to be fairly low.
Not sure how to grade it. Checkering is good hard to tell about blue. Going to ask about 3 day inspection. 500 is price.
500 bucks !!! buy it that's cheap
plab
Buy it and sort the rest out later.
Do you happen to know the model? or s.n.?
A Spiegel would be a 99EG with the roll stamping and odd d&t on top of receiver and barrel. Would be curious if it has checkered forearm as well as buttplate and what the serial number is. Majority are in 300, would love to find a 303 and 250.
This rifle is factory engraved on receiver.
Thats what Calhoun ment when he said roll stamping, not realy engraved as in hand engraveing.
Seller sent me copy of evaluation of rifle.
Copy as follows:
of wear, extra screwholes and cracked stock at the tang, added sling/ swivels pretty much renders it into the shooters classification. Condition is everything. If the bore is bright/shiny and has pronounced lands /groves your $600. asking is ok, can always come down. I would love to have one to go with my collection, but normally go for higher quality. If the gun was 90% would sell for around $1000.to $1200.
Not sure now as I don't need a shooter. Could buy for 400.
Did Speigle have sling swivels installed? The swivels look to be of the correct period. If I do buy it for 400 and is not collectable I may have it rust blued and restocked.
Spiegel did indeed have sling swivels installed.
Spiegel did indeed have sling swivels installed.
So the only concerns I have would be the amount of wear on the bluing. There is a small rust spot on the under side of the barrel. I think 400 would be a buy.

$500 is a buy, $400 is a crime.
Why not just cut the crap and offer him $100 and a bottle of Jim Beam, after you drink half the bottle with him?
Do you think a bottle and cigar would be to much?
If this is a Vermont gun, send it this way. I'm not very far from you and my .303 Speigle could use a roommate.
If it were mine, the price would be out of this world............
I traded for a Speigle last weekend at the Denver show. It's a 303 with forearm and buttstock checkered, matching numbers and sling swivels. Serial #3947xx. I'll get it out and photograph it this afternoon along with the two 1899's I got there. David
I'd like to find a speigle in 303

So much for well laid plans. The boss thought I should work on putting flooring down. We've been walking around on OSB for a coupla years now. I'll try again tomorrow around the Memorial Day service.
Here are some photos of my Speigle 99EG.

WOW David, don't know what you traded for that Speigle but you must have been happy with it. I know I would have.
Speigles are really cool 99's.
Lots of history there.
Steve
The rifle I'm getting has a brass medallion on the butt stock with the owners name on it. Was this an option or added by owner?
IIRC it was something that they offered with a rifle as an option for some extra money. I dont think they installed it on the rifle for you. We have seen 1 or 2 on savage rifles. Here are some of them on Mossberg .22s

I traded a really well worn 1899H TD in 25-35 plus some cash. That rifle is also a caliber I didn't have in an EG.
So if I understand Mossberg made a mount for there scope with Speigle to put on this rifle. Is there a contemporary solution to mount a scope?
We should honor who came before. That is what is cool about a personal medallion of a previous owner.

I received my Speigle 99 yesterday. Here are the photos.
Photo Bucket A few things I noticed a boss code that appears to be a Q. I thought Savage started with boss codes in 49. The serial number is 379892. The front blade sight is in white.
I have a couple of questions. There is a small spot of rust on the barrel. Can I steel wool it off and oil without hurting value. Also the buttstock needs a crack repaired will that hurt value.
Boss code doesn't mean anything pre war, its an inspector stamp. Clean the rust, fix the crack. The crack hurts the value. You don't have much into the rifle.
Thanks for posting.
Looks like it will clean up nice. Good find.
Opinions vary regarding removing rust. Wool - steel, brass or copper. With or without oil. Do a google search and maybe try on something else first.
Personally, I'd go with the finest brass wool I could find, dry and don't overdue it, oil afterward. JMO. Good luck!

Little oil and 0000 steel wool and it cleaned up nicely.
I know I am probably killing this thread but I was under the impression that Speigles were EG's. So wouldn't follow that the barrels would be 24"?. Mine has a 22" barrel. Did Speigle sell both?
Murray says, 303 were 22".
22 HP, 250-3000, 303 and 30-30 were 22". 300 was 24". Someone on here, probably SBrown has a 30-30 or 303 with a 24" barrel, but normal production was as listed above.
Has anyone seen one in 22HP of 250? Iv seen them in 303, 30-30 and 300
I got an EG in 22 H.P. with a 24" barrel! real late Utica rifle.
I was referring to Spiegel's. May be I answered a questions not asked...?
Got it!
No I had asked, and I ment about the Speigles, Don also has a 22hp "G" to go with the EG!
After disassembling my 303 I find the barrel is marked on the bottom with the description off with and arrow. Is this the same as a Take down?
Yep, takedown barrel. See them on various solid frames in the 30's sometimes. I have a 99R in 300 Savage with one.
What is the procedure and tool required to remove? Also should I?
They were not built to remove. Just Savage using up parts. Waste not - want not must have been on a banner somewhere inside there walls!
In other words, Savage put a takedown barrel on a fixed barrel rifle. They were using up old stock or maybe they were overstock in takedown barrels.
Or maybe they just felt like it! "Hey Boss, why are we putting these TD barrels on those solid frame rifles?" "Because I want to give those schmucks on the Savage forum 80 years from now something to wag their tongues about!"
