The gun vault is underway!
Kind of short a door for the anteroom aren't you? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> Les
Ditto on the door... So we're gonna have Loggah's vault, kinda like Capone's?
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Well i guess that will keep the guns safe!!!!!. Don
I finally see something that makes you look like a dwarf. There stands the "gentle" giant. I'll bet you'll be happy when the work is done and guns are secure. After meeting you, I'm certain everything you do is first class. Oh yeah, thanks for the jump. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Are you going to put a slide in the deep end? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Weagle
I didn't think igloos had corners. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
Going to be nice! How about a shot looking to the house? Are you still connecting the two with a pass way? I thought that was a great idea.
PS...what is your projection for out growing it? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Work in progress! built it further away from the house actually a seperate building not connected. they finished forming the walls and poured them today because of the height had to have the concrete pumped. cheryl took some more pics i think when she gets home ill have her post them. should be room in the vault for 500 to 600 rifles. dont think ill outgrow it right off. Don
Actually my father has a pistol that used to be capones!my uncle was a caretaker for al capones son out in sacremento and he gave my uncle one of al's pistols who gave it to my father maybe i can get it and put it in the vault. Don
Here is another pic of the vault construction.
Concrete pumping underway.
That is so cool!! Keep this thread goin'!
One more pic - shows inside staging/bracing, etc.
Don just had a chance to see the pics, of the GREAT gun vault , all I can say is OH MY GOD keep the pics comeing, will you need a armed guard, Im for hire. John
Where are the little narrow windows to shoot from. Ya know,, like the old forts. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Ill put them on the second floor. Don
Since you are below grade, do you expect any water problems?
Actually the back of the vault is above grade it is dug into a sidehill i put a foot of stone and plastic under the slab and underdrain on one side that is daylighted, i have to build up in the back with fill and put in a retaining wall . its all gravel under the building, i intend to keep it heated and also have a dehumidifier. Don
Another picture of the vault.
And another ...
Loggah that is going to be a nice vault whe your done. Looks great. Les
Cool!
Now are you going to find an old bank vault door to use for this one? Now would be as good a time as any to find one from an old/demolished bank and get it cheap.
As for interior suggestions, this guy is amazing
http://7.62x54r.net/
I'm thinking that Savage Banner would have looked good inside the front door.. bummer..
I have a vault door on its was from browning i ordered it about 8 weeks ago 10 weeks delivery so should be almost here. Don
Although its designed for Mosin-Nagants, I am sure the measurements can be adapted to Savage 99s
http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinRacks.htm
Fushigi, some really good ideas onshelving and racks thanks. Don
Don't know whether this is a consideration but I store my long guns muzzle down on wood. This prevents oil or solvent from running down into the action. Anyone else do this? Is it too anal?
Heck of a vault there Loggah.
T
I have some old Winchester 12 and 97 shotguns with rubber butt pads that I store upside down.
I HOPE YOU MIGHT HAVE ROOM FOR ONE OR TWO RUGER CARBINES IN THE VAULT -TOM
Given the choice, I always store long guns muzzle down. Can't do that in a safe w/ a carpet bottom but I do try to give 'em a couple days inverted before they go into the safe if I've cleaned bores. dh
Sounds like a novel idea would look wierd all those guns upside down all i can envision is a row of domino's , tom might find room somewhere. Don
I have room for a few move...about 10 now. You shooting or collecting?
I WANT TO START COLLECTING RUGER CARBINES. I HAVE THE MINI 30 STAINLESS. I WANT A 10/22 STAINLESS AND A MINI 14 STAINLESS I'M LOGGAHAS LITTLE BROTHER. TOM
Loggah, didn't train him very well did ya' boy is he warped, oh well, I have an addiction to Ruger Revolvers. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Les
He likes ruger carbines, plus he can afford them. should get him to collect rifles with compasses inletted ,plenty of them around and they should be affordable. Don <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
I'm thinking it was intentional... Don just didn't want competition for them Savages. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Been backfilling around the vault going to put the I- beams in tomorrow and put on the steel decking to pour the concrete ceiling , first floor. My photographer is away this week so the next pic's will have the ceiling all done. Don
One of my other brothers also collects savages ,he has 70 or so he's going to the gun show inSyracuse,NYthis weekend while i work on my vault i imagine i'll have to look at some nice rifles when he gets back. Don
You can click the camera Dub...
take some shots.
She took them with her to texas. Don
I have five early 10/22's from the walnut stock days. Anything past that time gets rebarreled and restocked to a tack driver.
Welcome to the group! We better get back to the 99's before we get booted off. You can find my avator over on the RimFireCentral board, also. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Is your little brother,a short fellow like yourself? Bring him to the Fest next year, Ill buy him a beer or to, maybe we can convert him to the Savages, course some of the Rugers have a lever on them too. John, P.S. still waiting for my job app.
Saddlering, have you tried on of those 96/22's man are they sweet, I am probably going to pick one up to plink with. They feel almost as good as my 99's. Les
I been eyeing a 96/44 at a gandermoutain near the house price been droping slowly, be a good truck gun, not tried the 22. do they hold a group?
from the one a guy at the range let me shoot, it was good at 75 yards, be a nice squirrel gun to keep you in shape for deer, feels very similar on the shoulder to a 99. Les
Not abad idea, there never was 22 longrifle 99.. I use a 94/22 now, for squirrels now. Bye one and let me know.
You can find them used for sale, all of the new ones are either 22 mag or 17 hmr. I prefer the plain jane 22 LR. Les
NO, toms a little smaller than i am probably a lot smarter he took the drinking cure about 17 years ago dont touch the stuff now. Just got done putting in the I- beams and posts then put the steel decking down concrete guys gotta finish putting in the rebar and the vault roof is ready to pour. Don
Very cool Don, Can't wait to see it when it is done. Les
Im gonna be doing all the carpentry work nights after work and weekends hope to get the shell done before snow then i can do the finish work during the winter. Don
Don, What an exciting project! I have been watching this thread, with a great deal of interest, since you started. I think a lot of us have a dream of someday having a building such as you are putting together - and it is fun to see somebody actually do it. Looking forward to watching the progress...............JPS
Will keep posting from time to time and taking pics, want to finish backfilling and do the retaining wall this week then i can concentrate on pounding nails.
What are ya doin for HVAC?
Going to keep it heated, also going to get a high quality dehumidifier installed programable to moisture content in air, being just a dumb tree killer not sure what HVAC is. Don
heating, ventilating, and air conditioning. THE SMARTER BROTHER
I dont work for the electric co-op. Don
Concrete guys showed up today put the re-bar in for the vault ceiling would have poured it but started to rain , maybe tomorrow .picking the wife up tomorrow in NY stopping at jeds on the way home, maybe get some more vault pics tomorrow. Don <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
The vault ceiling is poured!
Panoramic view of inside vault - a bit distorted, I am afraid.
Some poor outa work tree cutter gave it to me today!!!! Don <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
All right... love the banner.
Gun Vault - building the retaining wall.
Can't wait to see you start filling that thing!
Can I put mine in there when Canada says "no more guns"?
Loggah, I am speechless! You are the man!! I can only dream of building such a thing.!@!%#^^*%(*)())___(*&^% WOW! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Gee, Joe.. I think you might find a few takers for letting you hide your 1895's if big brother comes for ya. Can't think of too many places better than Don's to do it though.
Don, your neighbors starting up rumors about you being some kinda nutso survivalist yet? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Hate to say, would be my first thought if I saw something like that go up...
looks like its comeing along just fine, the savage banner knid of set it off just right. John
Don, it's gonna double as a bomb shelter right? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Neighbors are fine grew up with them lived here 40 years, my brother owns 170 acres across the road. They think im building a gun shop, maybe! wont look so strange when i get the building on it. Joe no problem figure out how to get them here. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Don you ever get that 32-40 off your buddy? if so some pics would be nice. John
John, its in the works, he wants a deluxe marlin 38-55 i have. Were negotiating at the moment.Don <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Question: What's the difference between Loggah's vault and Ft Knox?
Answer: Loggah's vault is more secure!
Looking good guy! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Question: What's the difference between Loggah's vault and Ft Knox?
Answer: Loggah's vault is more secure
Looking good guy! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
LOL <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Good one.
Thanks guys ,but that might be a little bit exaggerated besides fort knox is supposed to have gold in it, not guns. Don
I think the question should be "Where would we all most like to be stuck inside of". Since I have never heard of anyone killing a deer with a gold brick, I say screw Ft Knox, I want to be stranded in Loggah's play house. Loggah's toys would be more fun to play with than those damn yellow building blocks in Ft Knox.
Don, you are building what we all dream of having, THE ULTIMATE TOYBOX. Hope it turns out exactly like you want. Did you leave enough room for expansion or overflow?
Daveyreka
Hopefully theres plenty of room the inside of the vault is about 18.5x18.5 with 8 foot walls should hold 500 or so rifles along the walls more room for standup racks on the floor if necessary .will have a lot of collectables and gun related items upstairs in the 20x28 building. Don
Down to the Vault. The stairs are in.
The walls are going up!
Another wall shot. I will post some more when there is more progress.
seems fitting you'd have a chainsaw for some rough-frame fine-tunin'.
Its comeing along nicely, got to get her closed in before the snow flys, keep us posted Don.
Jed, had the chainsaw out a few times, going to keep at it for the rest of the month should be all closed by then hopefully, be cutting into deer season im sure. Don
More progress. This doesn't show the latest -- today I finished nailing down the floor joists, straightened the walls, and built the stairs to the upper storage area.
Here's another view. The vault door arrived yesterday. Tomorrow I may install it.
Looks like it's been built really well. You'll be the envy of us all! Thanks so much for the pictures and keeping us updated. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
The vault door is in!
Another pic.
And another
Last one for today. Got the stairs finished and began decking over the upper floor.
Beautiful job. Nothing more I could say. I'm sure you're the envy of allot of us!!!
I didn't know Savage made vault doors....
Just couldnt resist putting the savage medalion over the browning logo. Don <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
You folks from New Hampshire are kinda tricky, ain't cha?
We do what we have to!!!! Don <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Jed, thanks for the bump. Got the sides all boarded in and got most of my rafters up, the wife is gone for a couple days when she gets back ill have her post some new pics. Don
Doing a little fine trimming with my precision tools.
Getting ready for the rafters.
Actually, the rafters are all up and the whole building is covered with big blue tarps tonight, since we are supposed to get 3 inches or more of rain! Will post more pics when the tarps come off.
Loggah that is startin' to look like a little mountain Gun Shop. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Les
Just lurking here. Nice construction project you have there. If you don't mind, what is the vertical dimentional lumber on the sides? Are they the finished siding or an underlayment? Is this a custom of New England construction or your Idea? I have never seen this done. Here in Ohio it would be all plywood as the underlayment. Also, are you going over the ridge board or onto it with the rafters? Then the suport boards removed? I just enjoy seeing how things are built. I've done a little myself.
Gobbler
Gobblerforge, The siding is 1x12 pine going to have1x3 batten strips nailed over joints, the 2x8 rafters nail into the ridgeboard which is the roof backbone metal roofing going on top going to be 2 porch roofs added on each side will kinda look like a Amish style barn. Don <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
'board n batten' we call it here.
Looking good, will you have a gun range set up so you can shoot off the porch, for sighting in and such. John
My brother has a 200 yard range across the way up to his camp ,I yousta' have 100 yard range down back but there's a horse farm across the river now so i dont shoot here now unless a deer steps out that is. HD, no shrine just a safe place fire protection, theft protection, insurance aint worth squat on antique firearms plus the building adds equity. Don <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
Some new pics. Got the metal on the roof on Friday.
Some of the doors and the windows are in.
The electirician got half the wiring done on Saturday and should finish on Monday. Then it's on to the insulation, followed by the interior tongue and groove.
Sure nuff looks like a dam vault alright...!!!
(good job)
Loggah ....
that is a first rate museum you are building . It is looking beautiful . I love the green metal on top .
The green top reminds me of " Lincoln Logs " <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Hopefully by the end of the week ill have everything on the outside done, Then ill have to become a little more refined on the inside finish. Don <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
More refined? In these parts, only the best get metal roofs. What could possibly be more refined?
Very sweet, Don!
Very nice Don, when you get around to hireing that guard, I was he first one to apply. John
I might take a little more time on the finish work inside, controlled atmosphere! John getting the wiring done put a outlet right by the door for a fridge. Don <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
LOGGAH HAS A GUARD, HE WILL BE CARRING A RUGER MINI THIRTY <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> TOMMY
You have a great piece of work there Don. Now I'm going to make a trip for sure some day. Boy, if your ever in the "dog house" what a place to go to. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Doug
As a NH native myself I must say you are indeed fortunate to have excavated in very fine soil, looks like (forgive me) Florida sand. We used to dig out boulders the size of elephants in south central NH.
Nice job and state of the art foundation, looks like it ought to hold a Savage or two.
Bob, the fill around the building is stonedust from the local aggregate plant hauled in about 300 yards, gravel under the foundation. Don
Makes sense now, figured something like that. I remember digging out our cellar by hand in the late 40's. No small task.
Got the roof done. Got the porch built and roofed. Got the power on today. Got half the batten strips on. Should finish the outside by the end of the weekend. The insulation is going in next Wednesday.
As you can see in the picture, the guns are already arriving! If you build it, they will come!
My wife uploaded all the pics to her online photo gallery. You can see all the steps at
http://upload.pbase.com/loggahJust click on the first gallery - The Vault.
You can even view them as a slide show if you want.
Don, the slide show is really neat, tell your wife thank you.
I've been gone for a couple weeks bow hunting in the U P and now I'm playing catch up with what's been going on.
I'm envious as I'm sure everyone is but it's great to see your project come to life. Thank you for sharing it with us....Ron
Ron, thanks hopefully my experience will help others who may build a vault, not trying to make anyone envious. when all the firearms are in place anyone will be welcome to come visit and appreciate them as much as i do. Don <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Maybe we should move the Savage Fest to your place in 2008?
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Maybe ill have the vault done by then!!!!! Don <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
Well - more progress has been made.
Check out the new pictures on my wife's photo gallery page.
http://www.pbase.com/loggah/the_vaultEverything on the third page is new.
I have just about finished the outside. Most of the electrical work is done, and the insulation is going in today. I hung a boiler door from an old sawmill on the front, and mounted a small iron door in the wall so I can throw in wood for the stove. The v-groove pine for the interior walls and ceilings may be coming today.
Yesterday I noticed that all the apples under the trees that are about 50 feet from the porch were gone, and there were big deer tracks in my wife's flower garden. Guess I should spend some time sitting on the porch!
Don.
Don maybe you should, quit logging and be a pro. vault builder, this thing is just great!, what chair is for me? John
John, theres a lotta good enough in the building its rustic and thats about as good a carpenter as i am, any chair you like. Don
Don,
The boiler doors are fantastic! Dillon is still in business or a successor company carrying that name, still in Fitchburg. They're perfect!
Steve99
Just keeps gettin' sweeter! Looks very stout .
I figured that was a good place for em ,made it so i can open one side and put long lumber upstairs. Don
Loggah ,
Lookin' sweet ! I love the boiler door . will you see staining or sealing the outside ?
I havent made up my mind yet whatever i do will be next spring gonna work on the inside now put 5000 board feet of 8 inch v-groove pine inside today. Don
quite a stack of v-joint.
Jed, kinda took away most of my ambition put it on all 3 floors. Don
Hi All
Got a few new pics of the interior work beginning. I had to buy a new chop saw to cut all the pine, and my wife made me buy a table saw, too! It's coming in handy for the trim.
Today I finished the ceiling and the trim (except for window casings) on the main floor. Tomorrow it's on to the stairwell walls. My buddy will be coming sometime this week to do the chimney and hearth for the woodstove. More shots soon.
Pics at
http://www.pbase.com/loggah/the_vault&page=3. New shots start at Vault 44.
Don
Just went through the slide show, she's gonna be a really sweet home!
Got the main floor done and am working on the vault level interior. This is taking longer than I expected, especially the finish work. New pix are available at
http://www.pbase.com/loggah/the_vault&page=4 Vault 49, 50 and 51 are the new images.
Don
Wow! Is that post curly? WOW! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />
Super nice Loggah. Just wondering, obvious that you're into the tree business, but do you saw your own lumber? The pine looks wonderful. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />
Hey Don
How Come You Hold that Nail gun Like Ya Would a Chain Saw??? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Must be Habbit??? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Lookin Real Nice Don.
Steve
Had some curley maple sawn out only leaving one post in the vault, got the pine from one of the sawmills i sell logs to, gaining on it by next week ill be moving in some guns. i hope. Don <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
When are ya gonna set up the tree down there??
Got some new progress pix. Everything after #52 is new. Making progress -- this is the hard stuff -- lots of thinking to do.
http://www.pbase.com/loggah/the_vault&page=4Still waiting on carpet and chimney. Should be moving some guns in by the end of the week.
Don
Loggah,
I'm some impressed !
This is a fun venture into vault building!!! Great pics!
Looks like you have enough head room to put a double level rack in, bottom in front of the upper. A 1000 gun capacity is always better than just 500. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Next time you come to Kansas bring me a truck load of that nice paneling. Looking good!
Rick, not quite enough room for 2 rows thought about it but didnt work out going to have shelves above . Dont they have pine in kansas? Don <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
finall y let my computer take the time to download all of your pics...the place is awesome...really looks nice....the pine does look great....even took a look at some of the other pics on the site....a lot off wildlife around you... i would have loved to seen pics of the baby black beers...momma was a pretty big girl...
Pine...we just get stuff called "white wood".
Got the racks done, and all of the clean-up. Started moving the guns in -- Hooray! Thought this day would never come! Here's a shot of the Savages (85 of them), I thought I had them all, but just found a few more stashed in the house. Will finish tomorrow. Then on to the Winchesters, Marlins, etc., etc., etc. I realized today that I am already out of room! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
Don
Bout GD'ed time you loafer....
I realized today that I am already out of room
Guess we gotta tear it down and start over eh.
Lookin sweet Loggah ...... I love that photo of the boiler door under the light at night .....
i have never seen that many guns in a collection and certinly not that many savages congrats on that collection i thought i had a lot of 99s shezzz
So... sorted by model or serial number? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Sorted by" random" at the moment. will sort by model eventually. Don <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
serial and model #'s should run close.
if you need more room just pm...always looking to take one off someones hands...hahahaha..
...looks raly great...what a fabulous display....a collection to be truly proud of...
I like to rack them by serial. You will learn a lot about the changes made over the years doing it that way. Also, what was in production at the time.
You can still raise the rack base and put another row in front at the floor level.
Rick, if i have to ill build some freestanding racks for the floor room for another 350 or so right now theres a little over 200 spaces along the wall . gonna bring in some of my cabinets also for the back wall. probably arange by serial at some point problem is leaving empty slots for future rifles. Don <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Loggah great job, if you need to cull some of them savages, bring them to the fest, save the old beat up ones for me & LBK. John
Hey Don
A Place called Gun-Racks has Rotor Racks Made Out Of Wood, Can Get 16,18 or 24 Position, they turn Like a Lazy Susan. Great for Floor Racks. If Ya Need the Site or Number P.M. I 'll Get it To Ya.
Steve
Loggah:Great project and really enjoyed your detailed progress photos. Save some of that floor space for a small work bench/cabinet combination that you can service those rifles on. Also , of course, a good reclining chair for settin' back and enjoying.
I enjoy sticking another in the rack and moving the others down a slot. Gives me a reason to pick them up and look them over. The older I get the more I find in the racks that I can't remember where it came from...kind a like Christmas and a new toy. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
You're doing good. I wish my vault was a little wider so I could put an A-frame on the floor on wheels. I have my reloading bench in there, also. I think it's about to be evicted.
MANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN,,,,,,,, I can't wait till the next fest. The first one was great.............Just wait and see what #2 brings!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Just got done dragging a bunch more guns into the vault. There may be a few stragglers hiding in the house somewhere, but I will find them sooner or later. Total count so far is 228, and 89 are Savages. Probably 95 - 100 are Winchesters.
I will probably be adding some horizontal racks on the upper walls to hold all the carbines. That will make more space below.
The chimney is underway, and the carpet should be coming soon. I am about to start on all the bookshelves, display shelves, and work benches. Still have two gun cabinets to move after the carpet is in.
http://www.pbase.com/loggah/the_vault&page=4Everything from #60 on is new.
I have started moving some of the ammo into the vault. This is the first load.
I guess the Savages must be going up in value. Note the rainbow that landed on my vault the other day. Must be a pot of gold there somewhere. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Now, that's an omen if I ever saw one. Nice picture..
Great pictures Don. This is more than a vault..more like a fortified museum. ..Ron
Don, I wish I knew about this when you started it, I would have been able to get you about 50 Army Arms room racks for free. A buddies unit was deactivated and they sent out 500 arms room racks to get cut up, he asked if I had wanted them. I passed on it, Each rack held 10 rifles. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> Les
Don the rain bow, tops off a already great looken building. Whats the next project? dont want ya to get bored. John
Don, I want to thank you for that pic of the ammo.. showed that to the wife and she doesn't think I'm quite so bad any more. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

that WORK is over-rated.
Liquidate some stuff so we can go rifle shopping/selling for the next 40 yrs.....I'dd not consider being your agent 'WORK'.
Jed, gotta keep working for a few more years unless i start selling off land. Don <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
I thought about going back to work so I would have more gun money...but then I would have no time to enjoy what I have.
I enjoy goofing off and I never have enough time to get it all done! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
Don - that is a great looking place. Really outstanding.

Rick,
"Hardest Thing About Doing Nothing Is Knowing When Your are Thru"
This is going to be my goal in just a few more years if I don't go postal with all the PMS Queens in charge where I work.
Just had a great thought, take digital pic's of the bitches and see what kind of groups I can get with my Savages, that way when I snap, I know which one to pick up first? At the very least it might make going there tolerable everyday.
