I still got another bear tag and I could go elk hunting if Oregon had one.

Practice for the November rifle season.

50 yard shot with my 99F, circa 1957 in 300 Savage. 180 grain silvertip factory ammo and Leupold M8-6x. It has been my go to rifle the last 6-7 years.

I killed one of my 3 antelope this season with my 99 in 300 Savage with a peep sight. Didn't have a camera on that hunt (like most times) so no pics.

I used a 140 Hornady Mono Flex and a charge of 41 grains of 4064. The kill was from about 160 years away. The bullet worked super well and the wound was straight and pretty wide.

But still I can't say the resulting hole was actually better then what I have got in the past with 150 grain Remington Core-Lokts. Might be a better bullet for elk or bear because of it's ability to retain it's weight, but for deer and antelope I can't see any real advantage.

I have tried 3 different powders H4064, H4895 and IMR4320. And 6 different bullets (150 grains with a Hornady interlock, the Remington Core Lokt and the Nosler Ballistic Tip Hunting. 180 grains in the Sierra Pro-Hunter and also the Remington Core-Lokt, and the bullet above, the 140 grain Mono Flex Hornady) In my 99, and the old Remington 150 grain has (so far) been the most accurate. Just barely over 1" groups at 100 yards, which for my old eyes shooting the peep sight is excellent. All the 150s and the 140 shot under 1-3/4". The 180s both shot to about 2.5" to 2-3/4"

I think I will just marry the M99 to the load with the 150 grain Remington CL.

If I can get my Remington M81 300 Savage to shoot 180s under 2" consistently I will probably marry it to that load. So after that if I want to use 180s I'll take the Remington 81 auto, and if I want to use 150s I'll use the Savage.

Well, 303 deer is in the books and the Slam is complete. Two years ago I got a doe with the 250 for the WV opener, then a spike with the 300 a couple days later. Got skunked in MD. Last year I got the pretty 8 point WV mountain deer with the 22HP. I got on stand at 2 oclock today for the last day of MD fire arm season. I'd like to tell you how I shot him in the neck at 300 yards with the 303 F, Lightfoot mount, and Weaver K4, but the truth is a much better story. Sunset was 4:46 and last legal shooting light was 5:16. About 4:26 a string of deer came out at the far side of the field, right at 300 yards. Counted 10 of them, and the biggest stayed back, under the trees, where I couldn't see his head. Then I saw little white sticks moving in the tree branches, but the wind wasn't blowing, it was a buck. They were just grazing and milling around. He finally walked out and I could see he was more than a spike. He turned broadside and I figured this might be my only shot, so I benched the rifle on the arm rest, and tried to put the cross hairs on his shoulder. The cross hairs were so big they covered the front half of his body, but I squeezed. The whole herd busted and ran, of all things, right straight at me. They stopped at about 250 and started grazing again. He turned broadside again and I could see a little of his body in the scope, so I squeezed again. The whole herd busted and ran right straight at me again, stopped and went back to grazing, that was bout 200 yards. He stood broadside again and I shot the third time, and they ran straight at me, and stopped at about 80-100 yards, and went back to grazing. He was looking in my direction, straight on. He'd get a mouth full of grass and look up chewing. By then I had the shakes so bad I could hardly see through the scope. But, now I had a perfect sight picture, put the cross hairs on his neck, bang, he ran to the right, the doe to the left. Trying to give him some time to pile up, and let myself calm down, I sent a few texts. It seemed like I was shooting at him for an hour, but from 4:26 till my first text was 4:44. I got out of my tree stand and went looking for blood, it was getting dark, and it had been raining most of the day, and I saw no blood. Still trying to calm down I stopped took a breath and looked over the stone wall, and there he was. Might have run 10 yards. Didn't see a drop of blood on the trail. Sorry for the long story. But, I kind of feel sorry for him, It's like I've known him since he was just a tiny deer at the far side of a field, till he was a nice deer in the middle of the field with a bunch of doe, till he was a nice mature buck. Kind of like I shot an old pet.

Posted By: JoeMartin Re: 2019 Savage kill page - 12/15/19
Oh, the other thing, with my glasses on I could see the deer, but they were hard to identify, and looking through the scope they were a little fuzzy. If I took my glasses off they were crystal clear through the scope. So, I took my glasses off. Every time I shot I had to sweep the field with the scope trying to find the buck again, without my glasses all I could see were blobs running around. It's 6:58 and I'm just calming down. I"ll get a better pic tomorrow before I butcher him.

Yeah but can you believe that being able to run 360 degrees they kept trotting 50 yard closer and going back to munching grass? After thinking about it I was aiming dead on like I would do with my 250. The 303 was sighted in dead on at 100 yards with 190 Silvertips. They were probably tilling furrows 50-100 yards short. At 100 it was dead on.

He dropped the buck at about 150. Must be something in the way the shots echo off the big rocks at the other end of the field?

Posted By: JoeMartin Re: 2019 Savage kill page - 12/17/19
Thanks Jeff, my eyes are just getting to the point I have to take my glasses off to see through a scope. The scope is crystal clear with my naked eye, but then I can't see ten yards.I asked my eye doctor if there was anything to do, and he said take your glasses off to shoot. I do have progressive lenses. I was thinking of having the next pair made like old bifocals with the bottom half clear. Shooting off the bench with clear glasses works perfect.

FINALLY! After 35 to 40 days of getting up at 4 AM and pursuing the wily wapiti I finally lucked out this morning. The weapon of choice was a 99EG 308 with a Weaver KV, 150 grain Hornady SST. She was angling slightly away from me at about 150 yards. I shot from a kneeling position. The bullet entered the ribs, angled forward and destroyed the lungs. She went about 150 feet and croaked. This by far the latest I've killed one. The weather was all wrong earlier. Too nice. It has to snow to push them down where we old guys can get to them. The temperature was minus 8.
ancient Savage and dead wapiti. She's big and about 3 to 5 years old. Lots of good meat.

Tom Watt pine cone handled knife and dead wapiti. I told him the knife was too special to take hunting. He said he made them to hunt with so here it is. It's really sharp and made the gutting much easier than usual.
[Linked Image]
My hunting buddy John got one too. He and Bret who got an elk ten days ago are using the patent pending Harper-Royal elk hoist to get John's elk in the back of the battered ram. You can see my elk's hind feet sticking over the side of the bed and tied to the running board mount. The running board fell off a few months ago. It got bottomed out too many times.

It was minus 27 on Monday. I saw a few that day but they disappeared before I could get up to them. Sometimes you just have to keep on til you get one. This is to compensate for last year. I got an elk the first day I hunted this property.

Posted By: wyo1895 Re: 2019 Savage kill page - 12/20/19
We figure gut piles weigh about 150 pounds. The gutted animal probably 250-300 and the boneless meat about half that. The meat from the one I killed last year weighed a little over 160 lbs.

It ain't much of a deer really and I would have much rather killed a big fat doe than that little buck, but I've been in a drought lately and I was in serious risk of going without venison for the next year which hasn't happened in a long, long time.

The gun is much more interesting than the deer. It is a pre war checkered F. I've been looking for this gun a long time and just recently found it this summer. Somebody else D&T'd it. Other than that it is a fine specimen and with the M8-6x I put on it a fine hunting rig and I am glad to have taken this deer with it. It is a 300 and deer was about 60 yards away looking directly at me. He was in the thick stuff and he wasn't going to present a broadside. Put a green box 150 right into his brisket and he travelled about 50 yards without any lungs. I love the 250, but that is not a shot I would have attempted with that rig.

For many years when I was working in the agricultural and fertile lands of SE Pa. I had the opportunity to hunt big deer. Now I hunt mountain bucks and we have some big deer down here because they have the benefit of being able to age without being run over by an 18 wheeler, but they are tough to find in these vast mountains of Va. They have so many places to hide. I've got 2 more buck tags left and our season runs to Jan 4th so there is still a chance.

Anyway, had to drag this beast a country mile (or 2) up and down those mountains to get him out. With my 57th birthday coming up, I am thankful to still be able to hunt solo and get my deer out of tough spots.

I love deer hunting.

Yay! You go!!

I sent my wife a text right after I got on stand. I'm 63 with two new knees. Said I may need my son and SIL to come help me get a deer in the truck if I got lucky. There are 2 real steep long down hill ridges to the left and behind me. A big flat field to the right and front. Luckily he came in from the field. When I shot he hopped the stone wall and made it about 10 yards. Literally 1 minute after I found the deer my cell rang. It was my SIL. I said, Simon, have Carolyn drop you by the pond to help me with this deer". He said, "that's not why I called. We're going to dinner, what do you want?".

Good job and nice rifle. Someday I hope to find a checkered 99F, they're just classy.

What Polecat said. Love those checkered 99F's.
change of subject. Sometimes you can have too much gun. John (the guy who was hoisting his elk into my truck in the fourth pic above) was using a 300 Win. mag Thursday. The bullet went through the right shoulder, the bottom of the heart and destroyed the left shoulder. He lost the meat from that shoulder. He should have had a 308 99EG like me. My bullet went through the ribs, destroyed the lungs and stayed in the elk. Of course they were only 150 yds. away. If they'd been 400 I wouldn't have shot.
Posted By: JoeMartin Re: 2019 Savage kill page - 12/21/19
Mine went in the lower part of the neck and came out the off shoulder, turning it into a black mass of jello. He was slightly quartering toward me.That 190 Silvertip at 100 yards, out of the 303, might have been a tad much. I'll probably be back to my 250 next year.

I just consider it a success that after three days I finally figured out how to post a pic!

Very nice deer. So, what was harder, finding the deer, or posting the picture?

It did take a week to turn up the buck. It was about a tie.😂

That is a nice deer and a beautiful rifle.

Glad you got the picture thing figured out.

Maybe you can teach me.

Imgur for the win. Like third place I tried.

Thanks on the buck and the rifle. That’s my first deer with a 250 but I do have a new stainless 250 takeoff barrel waiting on a Left Hand rifle to screw it onto. I’d like to find a LH 14 or maybe a LH 16. I do like the cartridge.

Wow! there's abunch of deer (and elk) falling at the end of savage rifles this season, fantastic pictures and rifles!
Posted By: Goat Re: 2019 Savage kill page - 01/18/20
I have no deer story/picture. And even worse, I have no Savage! I had my Savage dream rifle about 10 years, it was a 1970's 99A Saddle Carbine in the mighty 250/3000 Savage, But like a bow legged, buck toothed idiot, with tendencies toward the behavior of an extreme imbecile, I sold it! (Stupid, stupid, stupid decision)
I scoped it with a VX2 2-7x Leupold. Very importantly to me, as a left-handed shooter, it was equipped with a tang safety. Some folks say it's a varmint bullet but I personally know of about 160 whitetail that would tell you a far different story. I'm talking about the Sierra 90gr HPBT Gameking. My little 250 would shoot them into 1-1/4" groups consistently. I only killed one buck with it He was broadside at roughly 75 yards and was a DRT bang-flop having broken both shoulders and exited the far side. I really liked it but it was so pretty I was scared to hunt with it for fear of "scratching" it. That rifle was pristine. I hope to get another one someday that has already been hunted with and has a few "scratches" on it.

good stories!

4 squirrels with a bad knee? That would have required a whole day of walking for me, Good Hunt!!
Posted By: JoeMartin Re: 2019 Savage kill page - 01/27/20
You need to make a trip down this way Jeff. Gary had to pick up a baseball bat sized stick to fight off the big red Fox Squirrels on his ground stand. If you're in a tree stand you have to make sure you're tied in, or they will gang up and toss you out!
Shot this bear two nights ago. Well over 300 pounds. 65 yards with my 1899H .303 Savage. Will make a nice rug.

Nice!
Had this guy show up by the woodpile today (you know how woodchucks like to chuck wood :D). Anyhow I reached right past my beloved 340 and grabbed the 22-250. It was a short shot plus I figured it had some good karma left in it (got it from Fireball2) so I wasn't too worried about missing with irons and my old eyes.
