That's Randy's deer. I don't know what happened to him? He was right behind me, must have taken a left when I went right?

Well that is actually my deer that I killed this evening. Joe is smarter than me (probably actually not as lazy as me) when it comes to posting pics here. Since photobucket went away I haven't taken the time to figure the whole picture posting thing out. It ain't much of a deer really and I would have much rather killed a big fat doe than that little buck, but I've been in a drought lately and I was in serious risk of going without venison for the next year which hasn't happened in a long, long time. The gun is much more interesting than the deer. It is a pre war checkered F. I've been looking for this gun a long time and just recently found it this summer. Somebody else D&T'd it. Other than that it is a fine specimen and with the M8-6x I put on it a fine hunting rig and I am glad to have taken this deer with it. It is a 300 and deer was about 60 yards away looking directly at me. He was in the thick stuff and he wasn't going to present a broadside. Put a green box 150 right into his brisket and he travelled about 50 yards without any lungs. I love the 250, but that is not a shot I would have attempted with that rig. For many years when I was working in the agricultural and fertile lands of SE Pa. I had the opportunity to hunt big deer. Now I hunt mountain bucks and we have some big deer down here because they have the benefit of being able to age without being run over by an 18 wheeler, but they are tough to find in these vast mountains of Va. They have so many places to hide. I've got 2 more buck tags left and our season runs to Jan 4th so there is still a chance. Anyway, had to drag this beast a country mile (or 2) up and down those mountains to get him out. With my 57th birthday coming up, I am thankful to still be able to hunt solo and get my deer out of tough spots. I love deer hunting.

I sent my wife a text right after I got on stand. I'm 63 with two new knees. Said I may need my son and SIL to come help me get a deer in the truck if I got lucky. There are 2 real steep long down hill ridges to the left and behind me. A big flat field to the right and front. Luckily he came in from the field. When I shot he hopped the stone wall and made it about 10 yards. Literally 1 minute after I found the deer my cell rang. It was my SIL. I said, Simon, have Carolyn drop you by the pond to help me with this deer". He said, "that's not why I called. We're going to dinner, what do you want?".

Good job and nice rifle. Someday I hope to find a checkered 99F, they're just classy.

What Polecat said. Love those checkered 99F's. change of subject. Sometimes you can have too much gun. John (the guy who was hoisting his elk into my truck in the fourth pic above) was using a 300 Win. mag Thursday. The bullet went through the right shoulder, the bottom of the heart and destroyed the left shoulder. He lost the meat from that shoulder. He should have had a 308 99EG like me. My bullet went through the ribs, destroyed the lungs and stayed in the elk. Of course they were only 150 yds. away. If they'd been 400 I wouldn't have shot.

Mine went in the lower part of the neck and came out the off shoulder, turning it into a black mass of jello. He was slightly quartering toward me.That 190 Silvertip at 100 yards, out of the 303, might have been a tad much. I'll probably be back to my 250 next year.

Very nice deer. So, what was harder, finding the deer, or posting the picture?

Very nice deer. So, what was harder, finding the deer, or posting the picture? It did take a week to turn up the buck. It was about a tie.😂
