the two semi skinners are wonderful very pleasing to the eye
the two semi skinners are wonderful very pleasing to the eye
Yep...but they are all easy on the eyes.
That first knife is badass.........
I miss David posting. Other than Rick and Mike he's probably had as much influence as anyone on my knife making. He's just a hell of a nice fella too.
Yeah. David's a cool dude.......
I sure like this one a lot!!!
I only own these two but I like them both quite a bit! David is easily one of my favorite makers, no doubt I will own more.
Top: Model 22 in black micarta and D2 - 4.5" blade

Sure love me a Winston; Model 45 top and Model 44 bottom
2MG - what model is this one? I need that but with orange scales I think.
Model Numbers and a slight description would surely be a BIG help...GREAT KNIVES SO FAR!!!!!
David rocks!! one hell of a good guy, my pics are not good sorry.
What model is this knife?
Passport, pretty sure that's his model #69. I think I have that some knife only with red G-10 scales - its a darn fine knife IMHO.
Correct it is a model #69 in Caribou, awesome knife and very comfy handle.
I can see why Winston is a popular choice. Beautiful knifes people.
That is a special piece of wood, is that a #45?
I like that one too! What is the handle materal? Model number please
[img:left]http://
[/img]
I think INTHEMTNS is right, it's a Model 45. David had a special piece of splalted maple that had lots of character and lighter color changes in it, and these scales were some that were made from it.
Those jigged and fluted bone scales that he puts on some of his knives, like the skinner pictured here, are some of the best looking scales that I've seen. And I really like that thick looking shiny finish that he puts on em'. The lines on his skinners are really pleasing to my eye...!
This is very Nice. Really like the detail in the scales.
Hey antlers....if you ever put this one up for sale, i will say it now...i'll take it!!!
That is a damn fine looking knife all the way around.
Josh
Antlers, I agree. His skinners are great looking, great working knives, and the jigged bone scales are just that extra special touch. I must say though, the two you posted above are beauties also. That red handled skinner has me ready to pick up the phone to give David a call. That one is just amazing.
Model 43. Desert Ironwood. A "working" knife. Not a dresser queen.
I'd like more. That 69 is more my speed
Model 43. Desert Ironwood. A "working" knife. Not a dresser queen.
I agree. That's my kind of knife right there Jesse.
Appears to be a fairly decent Bear too.
Well done all the way around.
Thats just a all around classy knife, the #43 is a super hunter, very useful pattern in my humble opinion.
antlers...you have some fine looking knives!!!
Thank You.
Stopping buy with a Jason Winston in use Tuesday.
is Jason still making knives? haven't seen anything in a long time. got a few I like several years ago. haven't found any since. of course David's are hard to beat, period.
Those are some real lookers...very nice knives for sure.
My model 63. David makes a great knife.
That elk is just awesome on that #40 i believe? Those SS pins are just right on that to, very sharp Antler.
I thought we were posting model numbers??? Lots of nice knives but no clue what they are. I'd like to order one or two off this thread
I had ordered one from Jason and never got it so I assume he is not making any right now.
I know my picture is not good, but here are a couple of the Winston's I have and use...I think the Elk is a model 42 and the tan G-10 is a model 37...they both have black liners...the 42 is D2 and the 37 is S30V..

antlers...is that orange scaled one(above) a model 45??...thanks
Brother, I'm not sure if it's a 43 or a 45...?
I'm gettin' older...and doin' stupid stuff like puttin' hemorrhoid cream on my toothbrush...!
INTHEMTNS...THANKS!!...Trying to decide on which Model No would serve my needs....toooooo many nice ones!!
I didn't mean to bud in, but i know what you mean so many sweet Winstons and some are very similar, i just looked at that model so i knew what it was, sorry Antler!
That's OK brother, I'm glad you chimed in. I couldn't remember...
I have a couple fine Winston's on the way from one of the fire good guys. Can't wait to see them. Hopefully, the start of many more to join my collection.
Reno
I bet you're gonna like em'...!
Some outstanding looking knives in this thread IMO.......
INTHEMNTS-
What material are the scales on your 69 with mosaics plz?
The 2nd one. Not the antler, the wood scales.
While you're at it, what's the last one pictured also? I looked at Dave's site. The homepage shows 5-7 of the same knife in various scales, but I can not find a knife that matches showing a Model number.
The brown one is a maple burl I believe I purchased it a couple years ago and the next is dyed box elder burl #70 and the red G-10 one is a model #43, I know he has the #69 advertised on his page but you will have to ask him for the #70 it is a really nice pattern little smaller then the #69 handle, hopefully that answers your question.
I believe I'm gonna have to email David for another order. To darn many I like. They are all very functional and look exceptional. Thanks antlers for starting this.
Reno
I always enjoy talking to Dave on the phone and he builds a great knife.

Is that for removing feet or legs?
Yep. He calls it a bone-breaker notch. Break the bone, then go through the break instead of using the cutting edge to go through the bone.
That's a mean lookin machine
Now that's a useful idea for a notch, unlike a gut hook. Sweet knife.
That to me looks like an answer to a question that was never asked. But I guess it's Art and you guys seem to like it.
Randy
Yeah I bird hunt quite a bit (dove & quail) just don't think that would suit me. It's obviously creative. Not slamming the Man's work at all. Just don't care for that design.
Randy
Now that's a useful idea for a notch, unlike a gut hook.
That notch is actually pretty useful on squirrels.
rta48 I agree with you. Not knocking the mans work if it works for you that is awesome. For me not so much.
I hear you...
That's what makes the world go round.
Now that's a useful idea for a notch, unlike a gut hook.
That notch is actually pretty useful on squirrels.
I can see that.

I can see that.
This knife is from a different maker, but he had the same idea too...!
We'll I could see how the Winston could work. But I am lost on that one. But you know there had to be a market or these guys would not have wasted their time. I guess.
The quality of the work looks pretty dang good.

This maker actually calls it a squirrel knife. You put the squirrel's leg in the notch, break the bone, then cut through the break instead of using the cutting edge to go through the bone.
Antlers, have you ever tried using one of the knives for this purpose? Just wondering how effect it was?
Yep, and it works like a charm.
Could I get by without it...? Yep.
Is it kinda cool to have anyway...? Yep.
Might be handy for cutting fishing line;) but it's not for me.
It is well executed and a nice knife though. To each his own.
That is actually really cool. I've been skinning tree rats for over 50 years and never gave anything like that a thought. I guess I just don't have a creative mind
Just got my 1st Winston today. I can now see why you guys have so many of them, there a first rate knife, don't know how one could be much better

Be kind and get it done!

Its already in this thread. Antlers was kind enough to sell me one from his collection
Hope to get back to posting soon. Been pretty swamped for
A good while. New computer and new photo program so I
Don't expect great success for a while. Trying to figure it out.
Still poke my head in here a good bit though to see what everybody
Is up to. Thanks to everyone for making this place what it is.
David
Glad your back David, can't wait to see and hear more of you.
The last eleven of a 50 knife order. Am very glad to finally be done. Delivering these puppies tomorrow. Then I can come home and get back to work.
Bad enough to have to lean new stuff at my age but to learn it and then have to learn it again sucks
Damn David, think I'd go stir crazy if I had to make 50 of the same pattern one right after the other. They look great as always pard.
David knives look great
Glad to see you posting again
Thanks. I have been most of the day getting a couple of pictures and then figuring how to get them posted. My photo host and the Campfire keep logging me off. Don't know if it is them or my computer.
These knives are for the "Catch A Dream Foundation". A nice group of people that are doing good things for kids. If anyone is interested you can see what they are doing here:
www.catchadream.orgTheir mission is to provide hunting and fishing trips for children who have life threatening illness. A once in a lifetime for a chance to get out and enjoy something for a few days besides something connected to a hospital.
I am glad to have been given a chance to be affiliated with this group.
Not here to raise funds but they can use donations, no matter how small.
Good on ya for helpin' them out David. Damned fine thing to help the kids
nice work David. I did a make a wish for a young man with a life threatening illness. We built him a saddle of his choise and all the gear for it. Great orginization. It's a great feeling to help out especially kids. My hats of to you sir.
Not trying to bump this post. Just working on this computer trying to get where I can post with it. Having a very hard time.
Not trying to bump this post. Just working on this computer trying to get where I can post with it. Having a very hard time.
No problem! I think a reasonable amount of bumping is fine, and nobody would think you are overdoing it by a long shot!
However, some of the guys selling stuff that they bump every hour can get a bit irritating... Well, unless they are slashing the price every hour perhaps...
John
I hope to be able to "bump" this thread soon by showing off some new Winstons
Cut out but don't look like much..........sorta like scrap iron...
Can't find the monthly special section on your website.
Sorry about that. Lately just lucky to get orders made. Thanks for looking.
....and a new Model 86 Hunter. Hollow ground with D2 and camel bone
A major hurdle has been crossed........
Thanks for taking a look
Thanks David. Beautiful work as usual.
I haven't owned one yet, but going through these pics and his site has me wanting to try one bad. I am really fond of the #43 with the 62 being a close second.
I have been trying to pull this together for a while. Finally got a knife and sheath pattern put together that I like.

OH snap! the 43 wont work on bear. Dam. Probly best you ship it to me
Erwin Roach told me one time that David Winston had forgotten more about makin' knives than he (Erwin), Gene Ingram, Charles May, and Al Alexander all knew about makin' knives collectively...! David's a good dude, and a true craftsman.

I really like the black and orange knife in the top pic buster, what model is that?
Dude, you have a great bunch of Winston's. All of those that you posted are really nice. He really does jigged and beaded G-10 well...those bright colored knives you posted are good examples. I love the bird's head grips on the knives above, and that skinner has some beautiful lines. Thanks for postin' all the good pics.

I really like the black and orange knife in the top pic buster, what model is that?
Its a model 61
Buster, is that a shortened blade version of the 61?
with my eyes, doesnt look 4 1/4" long.
but I've been wrong many times
Gotta lil preview text earlier from Mr. Winston.....
You just can't beat a Winston knife with elk handles. Perfect "trifecta".
Those sure look good man...! His weathered elk scales are really attractive. Love the blade profiles on his skinners, and the bird's head grips on those bottom two look exceptionally sweet.
Buster', what model is the blue jigged G10?
Likey.
I need the middle one.

I really love that orange G10 model 45 David. You might have to send that one my way.
Reno
I pulled the trigger on the orange 45, I couldn't take it anymore!
I pulled the trigger on the orange 45, I couldn't take it anymore!

He makes some great knives.
Thanks. When it arrives I will probably decide between it and my model 43 for this years hunting knife and then sell the other.

Not only does he make great knives, his customer service is top notch. He aint arrogant or egotistical and treats you the same whether its 1 knife or 15.
Keep up the good work David.
Model 45
Very nice work on that one. I really like his jigged and beaded G-10 scales. Second to none. I hope you get lotsa use out of that one.
It just went into my hunting pack and I am hunting the next 4 days, so we'll see...
Model 45
Very nice.
Model 45
Very nice.
indeed, orange is my favorite hunting knife color, harder to lose.
I have liked my orange knives in the past just for that reason. Not sure how many times I have struggled to find a knife I set down while field dressing. All my non-orange knives get orange lanyards.
After field dressing my son's first deer
After field dressing my son's first deer
whoever said red and orange ain't complementary colors weren't a deer hunter (or skinner).
Good stuff!
GWB
After field dressing my son's first deer
Good stuff...Congrats to your son.
Is that a just a glare in the picture, or did you get something on your knife?
congrats on his first deer!
Thanks, it was a big moment for both of us!
After field dressing my son's first deer
Just curious,
How does the 45 compare to the 43?
The 43 has a slightly longer and wider blade with a little more belly. The handle is also a bit bigger on the 43 and more square at the end. It was a tough choice between the two.
Awesome man, congrats! What model?
Thanks, it was my sons bull.
It's a 49.
Love those photos of knives being used
Last night
Last night
picked a #43 from Troutfisher,
made a holstex LH sheath for it.
red to match the liners
You should never lose that one. Nice color combo!
Damn, now I want it back!
Very nice

Mr David sent this this morning.
Really nice!
I like that orange 43 too!
Dave,
Which model if the knife with the yellow handle (jigged micarta I'm guessing)?
Thanks.
Frank
Put my latest Winston to work yesterday
Love those bloody knife pictures! Congrats on your deer kill and a beautiful knife to work on it with.
Passport, congrats and nice pics!
Does anyone have a 42 and 43 they can put side by side in a pic please?
These look to be the exact same knife except the 42 is a tad smaller, right?
David just finished this model 71 for me. Jigged black g10 over orange liners.

Picked up a #45 and a #71 from a fellow fire member.

Mr David sent this this morning.
Looks like a model 69 to me but I've been wrong many times before. Let's see what Dave has to say.
Reno
69! My favorite number, thanks Reno!
Yes, #69
Yellow with black pins/ black liners
Larger size knife, 3 5/8 " blade
My latest, another #43
Nice knife!
My favorite Winston model.
I think Winston puts together just about the best useable and affordable custom knife out there. This is my latest of three, had it less than 24 hours before this picture was taken.
Did ya pistol whip that deer? Beautiful knife and handgun, nice picture!
Muleshoe,
Beautiful knife. What pattern?
It's yet another
boring 69. I do believe I have found the perfect knife for working on a whitetail.
Just purchased this from passport, for some crazy reason he didn't want it anymore.
model 22 hunter
model 40 hunter
Stabilized Maple Burl, black liners
The handles on these knives came from the same piece of maple burl. David said it was rare that he could do that. I love these knives.

I was sooo close to pulling the trigger on that knife. And I should have. I am not a snob of scales and prefer a working knife. But I am in the que with David for a #69 right now and soooo would love to have him build me that same knife.
This is my newest on its way from David. It's a 45 with a 1/4" longer blade. I liked the handle of the 45, but the longer blade length of the 43 so I had this made. It has black scales over orange liners with black pins. Really looking forward to this one.
Striking looking knife troutfisher.
That handle does look comfy.
That is a beautiful knife. I like everything about it. Nice choices that you made.
Nice one, good combination you put together there!
if you get tired of it, lemme know.
Will do, but I don't think that will happen. I had him make it exactly how I wanted.
I like that a lot! The orange lanyard and liners really look cool

I hear ya. That's why I like mr David.

Nice action shot !
Another great one from mr Winston
Thanks. Second tom it's cleaned already
Congrats on your gobblers! Those orange liners really pop, look nice to my eye.
Model 90
Ken Honeycutt Leather
That sheath really looks nice
Dang, #45 is gone already.
Great knives mr David
That sheath really looks nice
Yes it does, very trim and compact.
Nice batch of knives Mr. Winston!
I couldn't stand it, that black and orange model 90 is headed to Virginia.
Thanks Mr. David!
thank you for that I have to many knives and that one was tugging at me
I really like the looks of the model 90, I just wish the blade was about 5/8" longer
on the way from mr David
#45 /w a tad longer blade. Asked him to soften / round the scales to fit the hand easier.
I like the blue man. Cool stuff
Asked him to soften / round the scales to fit the hand easier.
Great idea Dave! I just stole it and asked him to do the same on a model 48 he's gonna be building me
Anybody got a pic of a #42?
Pondering on the next one.
Anybody got a pic of a #42?
Pondering on the next one.
I am thinking on a #42 build as well.
Picture is from Davids website (hope he doesn't mind), there are several pictures of #42's shown. This one comes pretty close to what I am looking for.
I like your idea of "softening" the handles.
Saw that pic and a stag one I think on his page.
Was hoping someone had a #42 and #43 for a comparison
Really looks good with shorter handle.
Any of you guys have pictures of the model #60?
My favorite Winston to date. He did a great job on this one.
He softened the scale edges. And even the spine on the blade. Fots great in the hand.
Soon to be another on order.
Dehorning the edges on the spine like that is just another touch of class. And that glass bead-blasted blue G-10 looks really great. It certainly provides a sure grip. That is a very nice custom and I'd be proud of it too...!
Yessir, David Winston is too notch. I'm not knocking other makers. I've got some from most of em here. But for the money. A Winston is the best you can get. Plus he's relatively quick at turning them out.
Really like how that turned out.
