I’m trying to figure out exactly what model rifle I have-
It’s a Ruger M77 with a 18 1/2 inch barrel , iron sights and a ebony tip walnut stock with a red recoil pad. It’s 308. Is this a RL or RLS? Or RS? Thanks

RLS 18.5" Barrel
RL 20" barrel

Ok then. Thank you.

What about the same Gun description but long action-30/06. Sights. Ebony tip. 20 inch barrel.

Sorry. This should be in the hunting rifles section

THNX 10G

If I've seen that list I don't remember it -> that's not uncommon these days.

Try the Ruger SN look up. You might get the model number, then search from there.

You have the rare RLS. serial number prefix should be in the 770 to 771 range, the late 1980's IIRC.

Why is it rare? I’ll check on the serial #
Posted By: Biebs Re: Ruger RL/RLS what is it - 09/17/21
The RL and RLS Ruger carbines have become quite the collector item in the past few years. I've had several of them...sweet little rifles. I still have an RL in 243 I'll probably sell now that I've sold off most of the rest of them.
Posted By: GeoW Re: Ruger RL/RLS what is it - 09/17/21
I had one in 270, bought at Parris Island Exchange, but sold it to buy a 243 that I never found.

The short action RLS carbines in .243 & .308 were made for only two years in 1987 & 1988. The long action versions in .270 & .30-06 were made thru the end of tang safety production in 1992. Even rarer are the MKII RLS carbines, very few made. These SA RLS rifles as Biebs stated are now collectable.

RLS 771 serial 30/06 18 inch barrel with ebony tip stock. Are these as rare as the 308’s?

That's a handy link. My RL .250 Sav was made in 1988 which is probably why it shoots so good having a Ruger barrel. I thought it was made a bit earlier round 1980. My M77 Roberts was made in 1981 and didn't shoot so good, probably having the Wilson Barrel.

The long action RLS Carbine was produced for two more years than the short action. The SA carbines are in the 770-771 prefix range (1987-1988) while the LA are into the 772 prefix (1990). More .270 &.30-06 carbines were produced over a longer production run, making them scarce versus the rarity of the SA carbine. Interestingly, the .270 & .30-06 RLS Carbines are still listed in the 1991 Ruger catalog. Mind you, this is two years after the introduction of the M77 MKII rifle.

I have a 77RL in 243. The prefix is 78-XXXXX but checking the Ruger SN Look-up site the 78 prefix does not show. Am I missing something?
Posted By: 3dtestify Re: Ruger RL/RLS what is it - 09/19/21
A 78 prefix is 1984. According to the RENE Ruger reference, The SN range that year ran 77-68636 to 79-78670.

i have a tang safety 358 with 18" barrel and sights that i heard was pretty rare, i.e. 1000 or so made in the late 80's.

Its the rare RS/RLS carbine in .358 Win with a 19-1/4” barrel. There were only 758 made in 1989 and they now command a premium price.

758 is even better. i never measured the barrel but you're probably right. mine doesn't have the pencil barrel like some. its barrel is thicker and the forend of the stock is a little meatier. it makes for a really nice little rifle and its a tack driver with the hornady factory loads. it has a burris shortmag 2-7 on it now. i had to use the ruger offset rings to get the eye relief right for me and its perfect now.
Posted By: 3dtestify Re: Ruger RL/RLS what is it - 09/21/21
The 358 Win RS Carbine originally was supposed to be a RSI Mannlicher style carbine. Upon finding the barrel diameter to large for the slender forend of the RSI stock, they decided to put them into a standard sporter stock. But, a few were actually put into the Ultralight RL stock with the black forend tip, becoming the even rarer 358 RLS Carbine.

Ok. Lots and lots of great info and man ! A little confusing.

I just want to make sure of these models as I am planning on selling both or hopefully trading for a 30/06 Ruger guide gun!
Thanks

So the 18 1/2 inch 308 with walnut stock sights ebony tip walnut stock and the same gun with a 20inch barrel and sights and ebony tip stock in 30/06

RS and RLS correct?
Posted By: Biebs Re: Ruger RL/RLS what is it - 02/12/22
RL is Ruger Light rifle, no sights, 20" barrel

RLS is Ruger Light with Sights 18" barrel.
Posted By: DrDeath Re: Ruger RL/RLS what is it - 02/12/22
Sorry. Then both RLS

I had a 1988 RLS in 30-06 and a couple 257 Rbt’s RL’s. The RLS is the same as the RSI, just with a 1/2 stock and black forend cap rather than the full length Mannlicher (International) stock.

I remember my Ruger 77 RS in 358 Win had a 19” barrel, not 19.25” as stated above.

10GS: Thank you for posting that informative list on the M-77's
I tried to copy it and paste it so I could make a hard copy but the format of your post won't allow it.
I can copy and paste all other postings hereon but not yours.
Could you direct me to a source where I can make a copy of it?
Thanks again and thanks in advance for any assistance.
