Anyone has a resolution to the small gas tank in the tundra?

Is there a small slip tank out there a guy could put in the bed? Even if it's just an extra 20 gallons?

Any other options???

What year is your Tundra, Tarkio? There are companies that make larger tanks for the Tundras, but they aren’t cheap, IIRC.

Buy a 2018 with the 38 gallon tank...

I’ve a 2018 Tundra with the 38 gallon tank and it’s nice.

Before that I had a 2500 gmc z-71 with the 6.0 and I had a uws low profile tool box in the bed. The distance from the bottom of the tool box to the floor of the bed was ~7”. I had a welding shop that I’ve used over the years fabricate an aluminum gas tank that fit under the tool box with the filler neck jutting out right at the tool box bottom next to the driver’s side, inside of the bed making it convenient to fill both tanks. I had a manual switching valve in the cab and just opened the bed tank line to the fill neck of the truck’s tank and just watched the level go up. The bed tank was about 17-18 gallons.

Didn’t mean to go on so long here. This might be an option to consider. My cost was 200$ for the fabricated tank and I did the installation.

It is a buddy's tundra. He was convinced to buy one after coming out here and hunting with me last year. Liked my tundra and went home and bought a nicer newer one than I have.

I suggested getting a bed tank manufactured by an outfit that builds race cars or off-road trucks and plumbing it in. Simple solution to avoid him trading it out and taking a huge $ hit.

Think he said he can find a 38 gallon tank and get it installed. Wonder just how expensive that's going to be. Were it me, I would just add a bed tank and be done.

OEM parts ain’t cheap from Toyota. This guy did an oem swap , looks like it cost him $1400-$1500

i hear ya bud. i've got a 2010 tundra 4x4 dc with the 5.7L that has the 26 gallon tank. for some odd reason toy engineers decided it would great for the "low fuel" light to come on when you still have 6gallons in the tank. it always drives me crazy but have dealt with it and consciously figure it up in my head after the low fuel light comes on that i have min 60 more miles to go before i better find a fuel station. anywho sorry i can't answer your question but thought i'd share my saltiness for the "small" 26 gallon tank also.

Buying a 2018 doesn't guarantee a 38 gallon tank. Bench seating with capacity for 6, still gets the 26 gallon tank. The 5 seater has the 38 gallon.

I am 23000 miles into my 2018 and when I fill up the tank it gives me a range on the computer usually around 420-425 miles...However, on one highway trip, I got stuck in between towns and drove 478 miles before fuel - computer give you an extra buffer...I also read that the fuel pump accounts for 7-8 of those 38 gallons?

It doesn't work that way.

I have a 2017 SR5, and it has a 26 gallon tank. It has a bench seat for a total of 6 passengers.

If you get an SR5 with bucket seats, which seats 5, you get 38 gallons.

Not going to get a 38 gallon fuel tank unless you have a SR5

I had a 2012 Tundra Platinum with the 26g tank. In 2016 I traded in for a 1794 with the 38g tank.

What an amazing difference. It's not just the tank (which was absolutely mandatory for me) - the suspension, transmission, seats - the whole truck simply rides better across the board.

Back to gas though: I could barely get 275 miles a tank on my 2012. My 2016 I managed a 600 mile non-stop (all highway) with two motorcycles in the bed and multiple 550-575 mile non-stops. Granted, my buddy and I were sweating bullets on that 600 mile run. I think we hit 36.5g on that fill up. (*we had 10g of gas in the bikes so it wasn't like we were going to be stranded).

My low fuel light goes on with 10g remaining in the tank now...usually around 425-450 miles on the clock.

There is no question to me: get the big tank. It's a total game changer for the Tundra.

2017 SR5 TRD Double Cab (not a crew) with front bucket seating. Bench rear. 26gal tank. Easily get 425 miles between fill ups.

I would not own one without it for sure

Can one go to "Take-a-Part" or similar and procure a tank?
Ya know one has been totaled with the tank in like new condition.


Will it fit, filler line up?
Will the sender/ fuel gauge all that other interconnected electronic wizardry synchronize.
Are there any safety/other issues?

You can't get the 38 gallon gas tank without the SR5 package , did that sink in yet? Note there is a SR5 truck but they also sell the SR5 package. That's what I referred to.

True. I just bought a 2019 SR5 DC in December. Ordered it with the factory tow mirrors. Nice truck!

You need to buy an SR5, and then add the SR5 UPGRADE, to get the 38 gallon tank. The UPGRADE deletes the front bench seat, and replaces it with bucket seats.

The easiest way to explain it to people, is to simply state that the bench seat gets 26 gallons. And the bucket seats gets 38 gallons. I doubt most people have any clue what the UPGRADE is.

If you prefer, state that the SR5 UPGRADE is needed. But what does that mean to anyone, especially when you don't even reference it correctly? You just make vague references, as shown in your post below.

I don't own a toyota. But the 22 gallon tank in my 1999 chevy 3/4 ton with 6.0 leaves A LOT to be desired.

Where in your posts did you reference SR5 upgrade? Until I posted the pretty pictures you had no clue. Try to find a Tundra without the Sr5 package at the dealership that is not a work truck . Motivation Really, oh your from Oregon I see , no wonder GFY.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but what's so bad about having a 26,5 gallon tank on a Tundra? I'm on my 5th Tundra, and have loved them all, but by the time I run 26 gallons of gas out of my truck I'm ready to get out and stretch my legs. And fill up too. 38 gallons is a lot of weight to drive down the road too. Unnecessary for me. My 2 cents worth. Just sayin!

He's right, you're wrong. There are plenty of SR5 trucks out there with 26 gallon fuel tanks, if you look inside them they'll also have bench front seats and a column mounted shifter. If you add the SR5 UPGRADE PACKAGE to your SR5 then the bench seats get replaced with bucket seats, the column mounted shifter gets replaced with a floor mounted shifter, the 26 gallon tank gets replaced with a 38 gallon tank, plus a couple of other small things like better steering wheel and auto dimming mirror.

To get the big tank you must at the very least have an SR5 with the SR5 UPGRADE PACKAGE, not the SR5 without the SR5 UPGRADE PACKAGE.

It was called either the SR5 value or upgrade package when I bought my 2017. He didn't bother to read my first post. I even posted pictures for him to look at describing it in detail. He just wants to argue.

Transferflow makes a larger aftermarket replacement tank or you can get a toolbox/tank combo with a transfer pump.

I have a 2017 SR5 with TRD package. 5.7L. It has buckets, center console shift and a 26.4 gallon tank.

There are no guarantees. Look at the build sheet and be sure...
or crawl under. The 26.4 gallon has two support straps, the 38 gallon has three.

You must not tow much. I towed an 8000 lb boat 1000 miles averaging 5 mpg and on my Tundra the low fuel light would come on when I had used 19 gallons of the 26 gallon tank, filling up every 100 miles sucked balls! It was a much needed improvement in the Tundra to put that bigger tank in it, as thirsty as they are when towing the 26 gal tank was a stupid idea.

Drafting and trying to maintain 6-7 mpg when I could!

When I bought my 2017 the local dealer didn't even know they had a 38 gallon gas tank available

If your tundra is an 07-15 why not go for 46 gallons?

2015 SR5

I had a first generation Tundra with 4.7 V8 and the small tank. I really loved that truck, but if I had to point to any bad feature it would be the gas tank size.
Mine got around 16mpg, so a tank would not last a week. I got a 4runner now, and it gets 21. That is a big difference, and I can get over 400 to a tank.

You must drive slow.

When I had the same Tundra I would get 18 on the highway. With the 4 Runner, 18 combined. Tundra 26 gallon tank. 4 Runner 23. What,1 less gas station stop a month? If one tops it off every time. Most don’t.


Addition: I can get 20 out of the Runner. If I keep it 60 and under on the TPK. Which means I’m not keeping up with traffic. 2016 and 65,000. The extra 2mpg isn’t worth the time lag over 65,000 miles.

And for most, it would be hard not to go by 15 gas stations a day.

Once you drive one with a bigger tank you'll never go back. I was in the market for a used truck (2012-2014 models) about 3 years ago and was leaning toward Tundra. But they didn't offer the bigger tank until 2014 and I couldn't find a Tundra that I liked, at a price I'd pay with that option. I ended up with a Ford instead. Even without towing the advantages are huge. Probably the best thing is that I can buy gas where I WANT to buy gas, not where I NEED to buy gas. It isn't unusual for gas to be priced 30 cents/gal cheaper 50-100 miles down the road. I can just keep driving through those areas where it is priced high.

The extra 10 gallons of gas is about 60 lbs. Not a big deal on a truck with a payload around 1800 lbs.

I have a 2010 Tundra with the 38 gallon and love it, that is until it’s time to fill it up at Costco and I have 3 cars behind me mean mugging me..lol

Besides swapping the factory 26 gallon for a factory 38, the ONLY option you have, without taking bed space, is a tank made in Australia holding 46 gallons. An outfit from down under “Long Range Automotive”. Transfer Flow discontinued the tank they made for the Tundra. The LRA tank is about 1500.00 with a typical 200.00 dollar freight charge. If you can not do the install figure 3 to 4 hundred for that. “Cruiser Brothers” is, as far as I know, the only US distributors of the LRA built tank.
